The Shirley Temple: That Irresistible Drink Everyone Loves

    • 3 mins
    • Prep: 3 mins,
    • Cook: 0 mins
    • Yield: 1 drink (1 serving)

The Shirley Temple is one of the best non-alcoholic mixed drinks. It's so popular that you can order it for yourself or the kids at almost any restaurant, but there's no reason to wait for a dinner out because it's incredibly easy to make at home.

This homemade soda recipe was one of the original "mocktails" and it was named after the famous child star. Shirley Temple left a legacy beyond the movies and this fantastic mixed drink is just one of them.

The drink is a nice way to dress up your average soda. It adds a little fruity sweetness via grenadine to two lightly flavored sodas. The result is a delicious drink that is great for dinner, as a refreshing afternoon drink for the family, or anytime you simply want a quick taste of an old-fashioned soda fountain.

    What You'll Need

    • 3 ounces lemon-lime soda
    • 3 ounces ginger ale
    • 1/4 ounce grenadine
    • Garnish: maraschino cherry for garnish

    How to Make It

    1. Pour grenadine into a collins glass with ice cubes.
    2. Top it with equal amounts of lemon-lime soda and ginger ale.
    3. Stir well.
    4. Garnish with a cherry.

    Two Sodas or One?

Why are there two sodas in the Shirley Temple recipe? It's a good question and a common one. While it is unusual, it is not unheard of in the world of drinks. For instance, the Presbyterian is a retro whiskey highball that combines club soda and ginger ale.

The reason is that each soda brings its own flavor to these drinks and by splitting the two you get a pleasant balance with neither dominating. In the case of the Shirley Temple, the lemon-lime soda (7-Up, Sprite, or a similar brand) adds a refreshing citrus flavor. The ginger ale brings in a sweetened spice.

Some people have taken to mixing only one of the sodas into a Shirley Temple. Quite often, they choose the ginger ale, though some prefer the lemon-lime soda alone. While either is nice when sweetened with grenadine, the combination of the two does make a difference in the finished drink.

Give it a try for yourself. Mix grenadine with both sodas separately and compare those drinks with the Shirley Temple. You might be amazed at the results. No matter if you choose two sodas or prefer one over the other, keep in mind that a true Shirley Temple uses both.

    Grenadine Is Not Cherry-Flavored

It's a common misconception that grenadine is a cherry-flavored syrup. This is understandable because of the red color and the Shirley Temple's cherry garnish. However, a true grenadine is actually flavored with the sweet flavor of the pomegranate fruit.

The myth may also be due, in part, to the fact that many of the grenadine syrups you can buy are artificially flavored. They can be made with a great variety of mysterious ingredients and you will find a few that do actually use cherry flavorings. The good news is that more quality grenadines are being produced as people realize that a drink mixer as valuable as this really should not be discounted as a novelty.

If your family loves Shirley Temples, consider making your own grenadine. It's incredibly easy, requires just a few ingredients, and can be stored in the refrigerator for a week at a time. You can choose a recipe that uses pomegranate juice or, during pomegranate season, opt for a grenadine recipe that uses the fresh fruit.

Grenadine is a fun family kitchen project and you'll find that it can save you money while improving your drinks. You can also use it for the occasional cocktail like the tempting tequila sunrise.

    Shirley Temple Cocktail-Inspired Cupcakes

The non-alcoholic Shirley Temple cocktail has a reputation for being super sweet, so it's no surprise that it translates well into cupcake form. I also really like the grown-up Shirley Temple Black cocktail, which has all the ingredients of the original version, but with a shot of Kahlua (or Campari. Or dark rum, some would argue). So, I decided to make these cupcakes both ways.

One thing is for sure, nothing beats biting into one of these and finding that there's more to offer than just cake inside. The injected syrups keep the cake so moist and flavorful.

These are really easy to make, and if you don't have a flavor-injecting syringe, you can cut a little divot in the tops of each cupcake and drizzle syrup in with a spoon.

    Yield: 15 cupcakes

Prep: 40 minutes, total time about 1 hour 30 minutes

    Source: Sprinkle Bakes original recipe

    1/2 cup/113g butter softened

    1 cup/200g granulated sugar

    1 3/4 cups/ 223g all-purpose flour

    1/2 tsp baking soda

    1/4 tsp baking powder

    1/2 cup/122g sour cream

    1/2 cup/ 4 oz. Sprite soft drink or ginger-ale

    1/4 cup grenadine

    1/4 cup Kahlua liqueur

    Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

    1. Line one cupcake pan with 12 paper liners and another cupcake pan with three liners. I used 8 pink liners for the regular Shirley Temple cupcakes and 7 black liners for the Shirley Temple Black cupcakes. Set aside.
    2. In the bowl of a stand mixer fitted with the paddle attachment, cream together butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Add eggs one at a time beating well after each addition. Whisk together flour, baking soda, baking powder and salt, set aside. In a medium bowl, whisk together 1/2 cup Sprite soda and 1/2 cup sour cream (mixture will fizz and bubble a little). Add flour and Sprite mixture alternately, beginning and ending with flour.
    3. Fill cupcake papers with 1/4 cup level measures of batter. Bake for 17-22 minutes. Let the cupcakes cool completely. When cupcakes are cool, fill a flavor injecting syringe with roughly 1 teaspoon of grenadine. Place the needle in the center of a cupcake and push the plunger as you gently pull the needle up and out of the cupcake. Repeat with 7 more cupcakes. Wash the syringe and repeat process with Kahlua and remaining cupcakes. Set cupcakes aside while you make the frosting.

1 lb/452g of unsalted butter, softened

    2 lbs (one 32 oz. bags/ 453g) confectioners’ sugar

3-4 tablespoons grenadine, or more to taste

Milk or heavy cream, if needed

    15 maraschino cherries

    White nonpareils for sprinkling

    1. Mix together the butter and confectioners’ sugar in a stand mixer fitted with the whisk attachment. Begin mixing on low speed until crumbly and then increase to high and beat for 5 minutes. Reduce mixer speed to low and add the grenadine 1 tablespoon at a time; add more grenadine to taste if desired. Beat frosting again for another 5 minutes until light and fluffy. Scrape down the bowl and mix again on the highest setting for 3 minutes.
    2. If you find the buttercream is too stiff, you may add milk or heavy cream 1 tablespoon at a time until the mixture is piping consistency. Transfer the frosting to a piping bag fitted with a large closed star tip, such as Ateco #856. Pipe frosting onto each cupcake in two large swirles and top each with a maraschino cherry. Sprinkle over the white nonpareils.
    3. Store cupcakes loosely covered in plastic wrap or in a plastic cupcake-keeper.

    1. Pour the lemon-lime soda into a Collins glass filled with ice.
    2. Add grenadine. Garnish with a cherry and a fancy straw. Stir drink just before sipping.

Heather, these are SO CUTE! I loved Shirley Temple movies and the beverage when I was a kid. Love those bow-ring toppers, too.

    These are so adorable!

Oh my gosh these are so cute! Grenadine buttercream sounds heavenly. Like the idea of injecting the syrup, too :)

So pretty! I'd love to taste these cupcakes.

    These are so, so cute!

Oh wow, "injecting" that syrup into the cupcake is such a good idea! I reckon you could do that with lots of flavored syrups (I'm thinking rum syrup for example).

Ingenious! I just love this idea, and I love the idea of Sprite in the batter! Your photos are to die for. I just want to lick my computer screen! :-)

Adorable. Great idea for mothers day pressie.x

These are so sweet! I love the hidden centre,I recently made some cupcakes with a hidden heart centre; http://myownbakeoff.blogspot.co.uk/2013/10/hidden-heart-centred-cupcakes.html

These are so adorable! I like the squirt of grenadine!

OMG I'm dying over the cuteness! I need an excuse to make these for my pink-loving-princess nieces. I have never heard of a Shirley Temple Black! I have only ever added vodka to a Shirley Temple, I think I was led astray.

What a cute idea! I remember drinking about ten Shirley Temples at a wedding when I was a kid and then running around like a maniac before crashing. Must. Exercise. Restraint.

These cupcakes are SO cute! You did an amazing job injecting a little bit of color into each cupcake too!

Oh gosh, these are like painfully cute! And a grenadine buttercream?! BRILLIANT!

    Wonderful:) colors fabulous.

Not only are these cupcakes gorgeous, I imagine the flavor is amazing as well! The injection technique is amazing, my mind is running with all the possibilities!

    OMG are these cupcakes adorable.

i loved shirley temples as a kid. these look delightful!

Love grenadine, bowties and these cupcakes!

Oh my God! Amazing cupcakes, looks so yummy!

I love this idea! Shirley Temples were my favorite as a kid! Delicious!

I am loving these beautiful cupcakes:X Soo tasy

Flavor injector for cup cakes = genius!! These are so pretty!

Amazing! I have had Shirley Temple Cupcakes on my "make list" for ages, but there is no way I could have done them as perfect as you did!

I love your blog. I use to take a look when I can because I think you are creative. I have a pug too and a bulldog, and my blog has the name because of them.

    Kisses from Spain.

Super cute and nostalgic for me. PS Did you make the bow tie? If so, inquiring minds want to know.:) Thankyou for sharing your artistry with us !

I'd use it in my sugar cookies!

Your cakes look to die for! I am drooling! :)

Cutest cupcakes ever! Love the concept!

Beautiful! (and delicious) looking cupcakes! May I ask what the beverage next to them is called and if there's a recipe? : )

These are precious! Beautiful as always! Kahlua doesn't sound to me like it would taste very good with grenadine, but I'm willing to give it a try. Probably because I'm a bit of a lush. ;)

Oh gosh, these look too beautiful to eat! You've got some amazing decorating skills! I just discovered you blog and I love it :3

Ok, this is GENIUS! Dirty Shirleys are my go-to drink! How have I not make them in a cupcake form?? Definitely trying these :)

Made a spin off of your recipe for my sisters 21st birthday, the sprite cake was a huge hit. Very moist and delicious. Thanks for the great recipe!

Thank you so much! I'm making a cake and wanted a raspberry butter cream but could find no raspberry extract so I decided in a bottle of grenadine instead! Hopefully it works out well!

can i use cake mix for this

i was wondering if it's possible to use yellow or white cake mix?

Hi Cherry, you can use yellow cake mix in place of the scratch recipe. Thanks for asking!

Wow these cupcakes look beautiful! What a creative recipe. I haven’t had a Shirley Temple probably since I was before 21.

It looks so yummy. I can't eat it. beacause it is beautifull.

    Yours Truly

    Shirley Temple Recipe

This Shirley Temple recipe is great for holiday parties with family, expectant mothers, or designated drivers! It’s the ultimate Kiddie Cocktail!

I don’t know about you, but I’m IN LOVE with Shirley Temples and will drink one any day of the week.

Long after turning 21, I still find myself ordering Shirley Temples at restaurants. If you like sweet drinks, there is just nothing better!

Shirley Temples are perfect for the holidays! Kids get to feel like grown-ups sipping on these pretty, bubbly treats and popping the maraschino cherries in their mouths. Adults can tap into the discrete bottle of vodka stashed away in the kitchen.

They are so easy, too: Just two ingredients!

Pour grenadine over ice and top with 7Up (or your preferred lemon-lime soda), and that’s it! Garnish with maraschino cherries if desired.

Depending on the ages of the kids in your group, you may want to have an adult on hand to supervise the making of the Shirley Temples. Otherwise, bring out a tray of prepared drinks and distribute amongst the kids yourself. I like to serve these in fun clear plastic cups ; glassware and children just don’t mix.

Depending on the size of your cups and the age of your kids, adjust the amount of grenadine as you prepare the drinks. I think a ratio of 1 ounce grenadine-to-8 ounces of soda is a good ratio, but use more if you want to. It’s the holidays!

Speaking of over-indulgence, I show the drinks garnished with one maraschino cherry each but… let’s be honest. I am dumping 8 cherries in my drink, at least! I’ll have some Shirley Temple with my maraschino cherries, thank you very much!

Omg! This was my absolute favorite drink when I was a kid! Any time we went out to eat, I always ordered one! To this day, I still enjoy Shirley Temples!

So I’m not the only one then? :) I always thought it was the best drink ever when I was a kid. It has been fun having the Grenadine on hand and making one of these with dinner every night for the past week!

I actually have never had one but I’d love a boozy one. You’ve made these look so pretty and festive.

Look up a recipe for homemade grenadine. It makes all the difference in the world and it’s easy to make.

Karen, thank you for that!! I love making things like that from scratch and never even thought about grenadine. :) I’ll definitely check that out! Thank you so much.

Crazy question! Where did you find your cups? Super cute!!

Hi Misty. These are just plastic Solo cups that I bought at Walmart a few years ago. :) Keeping it classy, ha ha! Thank you so much. :)

How many drinks can you get out of this recipe? Thank you :) Excited to try these at our NYE Wedding this year! Thought this might be a fun drink for those who can’t or don’t drink alcohol!

Hi Kennady! I have down 8 servings for the recipe. That is because you’ll have about 80 ounces of liquid between the 2L of soda and the grenadine. So, that means 10 ounces per drink (roughly) which, if you put some ice in the glass, should be pretty good for a serving. I hope that helps! If you have more questions just let me know. Thanks so much for your nice comment and I hope you give it a try. This is still my favorite drink ever. So good. :)

We also make these for the young men in our family. But we do not call and Shirley temples we called him Roy Rogers. We have done this for years with our kids party functions. Now with 14 grandchildren we do it for them at family functions. And toaster being made we use the sparkling grape juice. Let’s the children to fill a special as the adults.

Roy Rogers – ha! I love that! This was always my favorite drink as a child and, if I’m being honest, I love it as an adult too. :) And that sparkling grape juice, THAT is good stuff. I could drink a whole bottle. Thanks so much for finding my post and sharing your story. I’m so grateful! Take care Debbie!

I grew up in having Shirley Temples and Roy Rogers because I was an only child and often out with adults… Suppose it made me feel grown up to get a drink that looked the part! From what I can recall, however, a Shirley Temple was with 7up and. Roy Rogers was basically the same drink, but made with Coke. We always have grenadine in the liquor cabinet, but I don’t think I’ve made any of my four little ones a Roy Rogers to date, had forgotten all about it!

Mom was head barmaid and always served us Shirley Temples when we had an outing to the place she worked in Manhattan. They were always made with ginger ale as the base beverage and the maraschino cherry with the stem was mandatory :)

Add thanks Lynn, that Shirley Temple, it always had a touch of grenadine :)

    I’m 72 and I still love Shirley temples—-plain and simple they’re yummy!

    Shirley Temple Mocktail Recipe

Shirley Temple Mocktail Recipe: Sweet, fizzy and oh so refreshing! This gorgeous non alcoholic drink only requires 5 ingredients!

I spent nearly every Friday night of my childhood at the bar.

Now before you run off to call social services, let me explain. Our whole family always went to the local dive bar/restaurant combo on Fridays for beer battered cod, waffle fries, and coleslaw. As a kid I turned my nose up at fish. So I enjoyed mac and cheese and a shirley temple.

These days that dive bar is long gone. It’s been replaced by a fancy craft brewery. Growing up I had no idea what went into the fizzy syrupy sweet shirley temple drink recipe.

However, my shirley temple recipe could not be easier with just 5 ingredients (plus ice!)

    Easy Shirley Temple Mocktail

    • 2½ Tablspoons Grenadine
    • 1 Tablespoon Lemon Juice, Freshly Squeezed
    • 1 Tablespoon Lime Juice, Freshly Squeezed
    • 6 Tablespoons Club Soda
    • Ice
    • Maraschino Cherries
    1. Pour grenadine into a large glass. Stir in lemon and lime juices.
    2. Fill glass with ice and top with club soda.
    3. Garnish with maraschino cherries if desired.

    Shirley Temple Recipe Shopping Tips:

    1. If you are in a rush feel free to swap out the lemon juice, lime juice, and club soda for a soft drink.
    2. Grenadine is available in most grocery stores near the cocktail mixers sections (i.e. Bloody Mary or Margarita Mix)

The shirley temple was invented at Chasen’s restaurant in Beverly Hills.

So fun. This brings back so many great childhood memories! I loved Shirley Temples and ordered them just about any chance I got…and then I was introduced to alcohol and promptly forgot about them! 🙂 I need to remember to serve these for the kids (and myself) on a special occasion. Love it!

Haha alcohol can make us forget a lot of things. 😉

A Toast To Shirley Temple with Her Signature Drink

Whether they’ve known it or not, countless amounts of children have raised a glass to Shirley Temple, the legendary actress who has passed away at the age of 85.

We challenge you to find a tot who hasn’t ordered her signature drink, the Shirley Temple, while on a night out with their parents. The red non-alcoholic concoction — a mixture of grenadine, lemon-lime soda and maraschino cherries — takes us back to our childhood, when we were small but trying to look big by ordering a mocktail that mimicked a grown up cocktail. (Extra cherries? Of course!)

As it turns out, “America’s darling” as she’s been called, revealed she wasn’t involved in the invention of the fruity beverage. “Those were created in the 1930s by the Brown Derby Restaurant in Hollywood, and I had nothing to do with it,” she once told NPR’s Scott Simon, adding that people served them to her wherever she went.

Others remember the drink’s birth differently. USA Today reports that a bartender at Chasen’s restaurant in Beverly Hills created the cocktail in the late 30’s during the pinnacle of her fame.

Whatever the origin, like the venerable screen actress, the Shirley Temple is a part of our Americana and it’s here to stay. It has evolved over the years, with lemon-lime soda (or 7Up) often replaced with ginger ale and a thin orange slice added to the rim of the glass. Try your favorite with the whole family, and raise your drink to those divine dimples. Cheers, Curly Top!

      The Original Shirley Temple

      1 tbsp. grenadine

      ½ cup lemon-lime soda

      ¼ cup orange juice

      1 maraschino cherry

In a tall glass, add ice, grenadine, lemon-lime soda and orange juice. Stir and top with a cherry.

      The Modern Shirley Temple

      1 tbsp. grenadine

1 cup lemon-lime soda or ginger ale

      1 maraschino cherry

      1 slice of orange, garnish

In a tall glass, add ice, grenadine and lemon-lime soda. Top with a cherry and garnish with an orange slice.

This is a great idea! We should all toast to her amazing life!

I had one every time I went to a restaurant with my parents growing up. Finally, my dad bought the ingredients so I could have them at home too; I felt so grown up. Think I’ll go make myself one now. RIP Shirley Temple, may you enjoy an endless supply of lollipops 🙂

This was the drink for the big kids. The little kids drank milk. This was about the only soft drink I had as a child. The boys would have Roy Rogers which was coca cola with a cherry. We thought we had arrived when we could order our own drink in the restaurant. To this day when I have children at a restaurant I still order a Shirley Temple and Roy Rogers.

Bless you Shirley Temple for all the joy you brought the nation.

My favorite drink as a kid, and then my kids’ favorite drink when they were growing up. Now that they’re old enough to have alcohol, it’s still their favorite beverage…with the extra cherries.

She was and will ALWAYS be a CLASS ACT!!

I still drink Shirley Temples. I don’t drink alcohol so a Shirley Temple is my drink of choice at wedding or event where there is a bar available.

I used to think I was such a grown-up when I ordered one. An adult version of the drink is called a “Dirty Shirley,” which is all of the ingredients of a Shirley Temple, but add vodka.

      RIP, Ms. Temple Black!

This will always be my hands-down favorite drink. People still always get a chuckle when I order it, but I don’t care. I love it and it always puts a smile on my face. Great drink for a great lady. http://www.simplytroy.com

We served them up at lunch at work today to honor such a wonderful Icon.

RIP, Mrs. Black. You brought me a lot of joy when I used to watch your movies as a child – so wholesome and sweet. Thank you to your family for allowing us to borrow you for awhile. 🙂

One of my favorite memories growing up was going out to nice, “grown-up” restaurants with my Grandparents for dinner. My Grandpa would always order a Shirley Temple for me right along with his cocktail.

It made me feel so grown-up and special. Every now and then when I am out I will order one in honor of the best Grandpa ever.

We always made it with ginger ale or sprite or 7up, cherry juice and cherries, yummy!

Yes, Jaynes, I’ll have a glass of your mix. I don’t consume alcohol so Shirley Temples still work for me. I do like anything sweet and fruity.

My aunt was the one who introduced me to Shirley Temple’s when I was a little kid. We used to go out to eat and I’d get one or we’d go to the dog track and I’d get one, to feel all grown up. The one memory that I remember the most was when my aunt, who used to be a hair stylist (she has since passed away), would go to a hair convention in Chicago during March (my birthday month). So my mom and I would go with my aunt and uncle to have a birthday/hair convention weekend. We’d always go out to eat at some nice restaurant for my birthday and I always got a Shirley Temple. I felt so grown-up knowing I was having a drink that sort of looked like an adult drink.

I don’t know how the restaurant made the drinks, but when I got older, we’d make them at family gatherings or just for the hell of it and it was usually made with 7-Up and the juice from the Maraschino cherry juice jar. Then you add a cherry (or two or three ).

The Bar Cart: The Dirty Shirley

Though the drink isn’t named after Anne Shirley , she who lived at Green Gables and accidentally got her bosom friend Diana Barry drunk on forbidden currant wine after mistaking it for the sanctioned raspberry cordial, I love to think of a Shirley Temple as a modern version of Anne’s favorite treat. Just say the name “Shirley Temple” to a full-grown woman and chances are she won’t think of the ringlet-haired child star of the early 20th century, but instead will wax rhapsodic over the sickly sweet scarlet concoction that every bartender worth his suspenders could whip up in a pinch for the underage set.

Typically a mix of Rose’s grenadine and 7-Up or ginger ale, a Shirley Temple isn’t a complex drink. Its taste and color makes it a slam-dunk with younger palates, but, like Matchbox cars and Care Bears, it’s something we grow out of as we move on to real cocktails with more sophisticated layers of flavor. Even starter drinks like whiskey sours and amaretto sours add a hint of bitter and tart to a sugary base.

When adding booze to a Shirley Temple, the Dirty Shirley, as it’s commonly called, keeps things equally straightforward. No citrus, bitters, brown liquors, or other flourishes of flavor are added to the sugary drink. Vodka, that high-octane tabula rasa, typically does the trick. But if we’re going to the trouble of mixing up a drink like a proper adult, I can think of a few ways to make it even better.

Cherry Heering, the sweet but refined liqueur last seen playing against the taste of coffee-infused porter in the winter beer cocktail The Good Cheer, adds depth to the drink. (Luxardo, the Italian liqueur used for maraschino cherries, can be used too, but I find it’s got less complexity than the dark, rich Heering.)

In the same vein, homemade grenadine syrup brings more complexity to what would otherwise be straightforward sweetness. A quick reduction of real pomegranate juice and sugar, a small batch can be ready in 15 minutes and takes the cocktail firmly from the land of childhood into the realm of more adult tipples.

Candied maraschino cherries are the traditional garnish, but if you’re averse to the unnatural hue—and if you’re willing to buck tradition just a bit and bring in a hint of sour to go with the sweet-on-sweet flavors of the drink—here’s an grown-up substitute. Grab a handful of sour cherries from the freezer (from the cherries you picked over the summer, yes?) and soak them in 1/4-1/3 cup of the grenadine syrup overnight. They won’t lose their sour edge, but will take on a maraschino-esque flavor that mellows them slightly.

With the Heering, homemade grenadine, and ruddy sour cherries, the end result will be a less shockingly neon cocktail and more of a delicate rose hue—just the sort of color that Anne Shirley would swoon over in the blossoms of her beloved apple and cherry trees. Don’t drink too many before dinner.

      The Dirty Shirley

      Prep time: 10 minutes

      Total time: 10 minutes

      Ingredients:

      • 1 1/2 fl. oz. (3 tablespoons) vodka
      • 3/4 fl. oz. (1 1/2 tablespoons) homemade grenadine
      • 1/2 fl. oz. (1 tablespoon) cherry Heering liqueur
      • 1 can 7-Up
      • 4-6 maraschino cherries or soaked sour cherries (as above)

Fill two old-fashioned glasses or small (6 oz. or less) juice glasses with ice.

Pour the vodka, grenadine, and cherry Heering into a large glass or shaker. Stir well to combine, then divide between the two small glasses.

Top each small glass with 7-Up and stir to mix, although it’s always a little fun to leave it un-stirred so you see the two layers of pale pink and deep red.

Garnish with at least two cherries. Remember the mean bartenders and servers who would never let you have extra cherries as a kid? Don’t be those guys.
