Leave some comments about the Screwdriver

Amazing drink, tastes of summer. Simple and classic. Add a drop of white rum to make it extra tropical.

Try freshly squeezed satsuma juice, gives it a more sweet taste

My son asked for one of these in a bar in Fuerteventura. The barman asked if he wanted a large or small glass. My son asked for large and got. . . . . . . . . . A pint glass - half vodka half OJ. To say he was happy and walking about two inches of the ground afterwards is putting it mildly!

Ways to Improve the Screwdriver Vodka Drink Recipe

Few mixed drinks are as easy as the popular Screwdriver. It is not only an essential drink that everyone should know and one of the best brunch drinks, but it lends itself to experimentation and improvement.

The Screwdriver is, quite simply, vodka and orange juice. There is no mystery or secret ingredients and all you need to do is pour a shot of vodka and fill your glass with OJ. However, there are some little things that you can do that will improve your Screwdriver or add a spark to an otherwise ordinary drink.

What You'll Need

  • 2 ounces vodka
  • 5 ounces
  • orange juice
  • Orange slice for garnish

How to Make It

  1. Build the ingredients in a collins glass with ice.
  2. Stir well.

How to Make a Better Screwdriver

The Vodka. This is not the place for your best vodka (though use it if you like), but it's also important not to be a complete cheapskate when it comes to the single liquor used in any drink. There are many great tasting vodkas that are also budget-friendly on the market today. Explore these options and find the best 'well' vodka for your bar and use it in drinks like this.

The Orange Juice. If you want the best Screwdriver possible, you should use fresh-squeezed orange juice. It is very easy and takes just a few minutes to get enough fresh juice for the drink. If you are going to use a store-bought juice, look for the cleanest, most natural juice available.

How to Improve on the Simple Screwdriver

While there are only two elements in the Screwdriver, there are a number of other options available that can ramp up your average Screwdriver. Essentially, we're just using the vodka-orange juice base and adding a little to it because sometimes we need to break out of a routine.

Here are a few ideas for improving your Screwdriver game.

  • Flavored Vodka - It is the easiest way to add a little spark and flavor contrast. Citrus vodkas would be an obvious option, though something with a little more contrast and will add depth. Try one of the berry vodkas for starters. Either cucumber or vanilla vodkas are amazing here as well. Experiment with your own infusions; rosemary-strawberry vodka is a very fun base for a Screwdriver.
  • Add a Sweetener - Orange juice has a natural acidity that can be combated with a little sweetener. To keep the flavor profile untouched, add a little simple syrup to your drink. If you want to add another flavor along with sweetness, take a hint from the Tequila Sunrise and add grenadine or a similar syrup like strawberry or raspberry-lavender. Just a small dollop of syrup will make a world of difference.
  • Add Sparkle - Lighten up your Screwdriver by topping it off with soda. Ginger ale and club soda are two perfect options, though you may also want to consider something a bit more fun like DRY Cucumber or Q Ginger. Also, you can take inspiration from drinks like the Mimosa and add a little sparkling wine.

  • Muddled Fruit - Before pouring your Screwdriver, muddle a few pieces of fresh fruit in your glass. Berries add a nice contrast and kiwi are an easy and fun addition. Lemon, lime, peach and almost any fruit you can find will add just a little bit of dimension to this simple drink.

More Tall Vodka and Orange Juice Cocktails to Enjoy

Vodka and orange juice is a favorite combination for many drinkers. If you're looking to step beyond the Screwdriver, give one of these recipes a try.

  • Bocce Ball - Toss a little amaretto into the mix.
  • Creamsicle - How about some creamy vanilla?
  • Hairy Navel - Things get a little peachy in this drink.
  • Harvey Wallbanger - Top it with a Galliano float.
  • Madras - Cranberry juice dominates this fruity drink.

Classic Cocktail Recipe: The Screwdriver

For Cocktail Week at The Kitchn, I decided to share, well, not much of a cocktail recipe at all. The thing is, I rotate between three alcoholic beverages year round: vodka + lemonade, vodka + ginger beer, and vodka + orange juice. Yes, I am very adventurous when it comes to my booze.

Here's the thing about those three drinks—I only like them when the mixers are fresh, meaning straight from squeezed lemons, grated ginger, or juiced oranges. If it's from a bottle (or even worse, a bar fountain), just give me a splash of water and a lime and call it a day.

I've already shared my Peach Vodka Lemonade on the internet, and until I get a SodaStream I can't post the recipe for a perfect Moscow Mule. So I give you my usual, instead. It's the drink most often waiting for me when I come home from a late night at work. It's bubbly, sweet, tart, and refreshing, and somehow I feel the vitamins from the orange juice balance out the negative hit from the vodka. Maybe. Or maybe not.

Considering how much I dislike the actual cocktail labeled a "screwdriver"—or at least the subpar versions made with canned orange juice, often found at overpriced brunches and bars—I really didn't want to include that name in the title. Except for the fact that, technically it's what a drink containing vodka and orange juice is. But for the record, I think this "recipe" (or lack there-of) should be considered a gold standard of the classic.

Juice from one orange

2 ounces good-quality vodka (or gin)

Thin orange slices, for garnish

Combine the fresh orange juice and vodka in a double rocks glass. Fill with ice and finish off with a splash of soda. Garnish with orange slice.

Screwdriver Cocktail

Screwdriver Cocktail

Screwdriver Cocktail – the easiest boozy cocktail that you can make at home with only two ingredients: orange, vodka and takes 10 mins!

This past weekend, we went to Newport Beach for brunch with a friend from Malaysia, sitting out on the deck, soaking in the sun, taking in the views at the marina, and sipping drinks (click to view my drinks recipes). I ordered screwdriver, and Mr. Rasa Malaysia chuckled as I placed an order for a “screwdriver.”

Screwdriver is actually one of the most popular and amazing cocktails, and it’s absolutely delightful for brunch. At home, you can practically make it every day, as long as you have fresh orange and a bottle of vodka. It really doesn’t get any easier than that.

The name “screwdriver” came about because the original tool used to stir the cocktail was indeed a screwdriver. I am not sure if it’s myth or a fact, but it’s simple, refreshing, cooling and you won’t feel guilty drinking a lot of it because there is plenty of vitamin-C loaded orange juice in there! Make a big batch of it the next time you host a summer brunch party and enjoy!

Here's the origin of the screwdriver cocktail

One out of three cocktails ordered in the US contain vodka, a spirit that pours in $20 billion annually in sales, according to Victorino Matus, author of " Vodka: How a colorless, odorless, flavorless spirit conquered America ."

One of the first vodka-based cocktails, the screwdriver, is made from two ingredients: vodka and orange juice.

In his book, Matus explains how the screwdriver got its name.

Decades ago, American oil workers in the Persian Gulf discreetly added vodka to their orange juice while on the job.

Lacking a spoon, the workers decided to stir the drink with a screwdriver.

Three Tips for Making the Best Screwdriver

I absolutely love this simple, two-ingredient cocktail. It’s fresh, works perfectly for brunch and works well at night. You will need vodka, orange juice and ice.

Here are three tips for making it best:

  1. Use Good Vodka. There are only two ingredients so choose something mid- to high-shelf. We usually have Ketel One or Stoli in our kitchen, but use what you love.
  2. Try Fresh Orange Juice. If you have the time, fresh squeezed orange juice is best. It’s less sweet and tastes better than store-bought. If you need to use store-bought, choose a bottle that is 100% orange juice.
  3. Keep everything really cold. We keep the orange juice and vodka chilled then to make it, we stir well after pouring it over ice.

How to Make the Best Screwdriver Cocktail

  • PREP 5mins
  • TOTAL 5mins

Choose high quality vodka (something like Stoli, Ketel One or Grey Goose) as well as a good quality orange juice — freshly squeezed is even better.

You Will Need

1 1/2 cups orange juice

Directions

Divide ice between 4 glasses. Add vodka and orange juice to a pitcher and stir. Pour over ice. Alternatively, instead of using a pitcher, divide the vodka and orange juice between 4 glasses — Each glass should have 2 ounces of vodka and about 3 ounces of orange juice.

Stir well then place a few orange wedges into the middle of the glass.

Screwdriver

THIS PAGE MAY CONTAIN AFFILIATE LINKS. PLEASE READ MY DISCLOSURE.

The Screwdriver, or Vodka and Orange, is one of the simplest cocktails you could possibly mix, which may be part of its enduring popularity. It actually has a third ingredient many people don’t realize it calls for. It’s a perfect pre-mixer for parties and a great quick drink at home when you’re too tired for anything complicated. Also, it has vitamin C! How can you beat that?

Since the recipe is so darn simple and familiar, I’m going to cover some specifics on making the best screwdriver you can.

  • 2 ounces vodka
  • 5 ounces orange juice
  • A pinch of salt

Most recipes online don’t call for the pinch of salt. But it smooths the rough edges of the orange juice’s acidity and the “burning” flavor of the vodka. Fill a glass (traditionally highball) with ice, pour in your ingredients, and stir. Garnish it with a slice of orange or a maraschino cherry, optionally. That’s it!

Tips for Making the Best Screwdriver

With a drink this simple, quality of ingredients is everything. There’s no magic shortcut. The smoother your vodka, the easier a Screwdriver will go down. Avoid pulpy orange juice, and go with either a premium brand of orange juice or fresh squeezed.

A Screwdriver goes with any food orange juice goes with. The first meal that comes to mind is, of course, breakfast. But you don’t have to start drinking at 6 am to enjoy a screwdriver with breakfast: just have breakfast foods for dinner or lunch! Omelet, bacon, sausage, ham, pancakes, French toast – good, heavy, stick-to-your-ribs food.

Ever versatile Screwdrivers are also tasty with smoky foods, like a pulled pork sandwich or steaks from the smoker. Smoked almonds and cheeses make a nice munchie to snack along on with a screwdriver. Salty snacks work well, too, especially if they have a strong flavor. Try pretzels or flavorful crackers.
