Critic Reviews for Teenage Cocktail
It's a beautifully made and intoxicating experience that explores the dangerous scenarios that can arise when sex with strangers goes too far.
Teenage Cocktail is a quality film that goes well beyond an entertaining high school romance and makes a lasting impression by highlighting the overwhelming power of blinding passion.
Teenage Cocktail isn't a perfect film, but it's a great ride.
Teenage Cocktail is a sexy, dangerous, and delightfully devious warning about unchecked hormones and the crazy things we do for love.
John Carchietta nails the more subtle, painful aspects of teenhood. That's a harder thing to pull off than a grindhouse flick, which makes Teenage Cocktail an impressive, if slightly uneven, debut.
Audience Reviews for Teenage Cocktail
Pretty average honestly. Half a star extra for playing Cherry Glazerr at the end.

Teenage Cocktail Review [SXSW 2016]
Teenage Cocktail is a sexy, dangerous, and delightfully devious warning about unchecked hormones and the crazy things we do for love.
Young love is never, and will never, be easily navigated, which is a reality that writer/director John Carchietta bottles for a bubbly, provocative drink dubbed Teenage Cocktail.
There’s a beauty in the way that Carchietta (and co-writers Sage Bannick/Chris Sivertson/Amelia Yokel) balance pretty-in-pink teenage crushing with warm, comforting relationship notes, with the added bonus of being a twisted obsession thriller. Because that’s what teenage wilds are all about, right? Hormones, brash decisions, devoted love, thoughts of independence, and the truly dangerous cocktail those emotional factors form – something a bartender might call “Your Chaotic Childhood.” Carchietta understands this insanity, and leads viewers on a sensual journey with a wicked sense of danger. This is a story about love, and the crazy fucking shit we do in its name.
Nichole Bloom stars as Annie, a typical teen who develops a not-so typical crush on her dance-loving classmate, Jules ( Fabianne Therese). The two develop a friendship based on girlish bonding and equal adoration, but still traverse their high school with caution concerning their secret romance. This changes when Jules introduces Annie to an online service called JamCam, where woman can get paid to act sexy on camera from the safety of home. But when Annie’s secret is exposed, the teens exploit a lonely pool cleaner named Frank (Pat Healy) in hopes of a worthwhile payday – which proves to be a poor, and dangerous choice.
The chemistry between Bloom and her co-star Fabianne Therese is the connective glue holding Teenage Cocktail together, as they traverse murky sexual waters too taboo to be discussed openly. The struggles of a young lesbian are addressed healthily, and with an unbiasedly sweet exposure, as their same-sex relationship never poses a true problem, just more an innocent, playful exploration of love.
Michelle Borth, as Annie’s mother, has a wonderful reactionary scene where she walks into Annie’s room, interrupting the girl’s first heavy makeout session. There’s a pause, puzzled processing, and that wonderful “OHHHH!” moment so sweet and sincere in its protective mothering (as she leaves, then comes all the way back to leave the door wide open).
Of course, the reason Annie and Jules exude so much chemistry is because of Bloom and Therese themselves. Scripts can’t force emotion, but these two are primed for this gossipy, heavy-petting romance straight from the get-go. Annie shyly embraces her attraction to Jules, and Bloom does a wonderful job remaining coy, yet impressionable enough to grab an entire candy dish while dashing out of a diner. Therese is the more confident one of the two, and does an even better job manipulating lusty desires for her own, boredom-killing benefit. The two work tremendously well together, though, and create a relationship reminiscent of young, stupid love that bursts with invigorating, life-completing passion.
Teenage Cocktail isn’t just about finding love and escaping your boring suburban prison, and that’s where master creep Pat Healy comes in. Typically cast as the glasses-wearing, harmless type, Healy gets another chance to flex his genre muscles as a sleazy, kiddie-baiting cheater. Here’s where Carchietta and company really explore their story’s fiendish side, as two immature, radically acting girls ruin a man’s established life, that, while disfunction, is all he has. Frank risks divorce by meeting them, and after Jules snaps some pictures, everyone involved realizes there are consequences for their actions. The stark contrast between adulthood and fleeting childishness makes for a thrilling twist, albeit a bit expected, and somewhat fantasized.
Carchietta’s direction and vision brings a lot of color and sparkle to Teenage Cocktail, which is highly appreciated. Love scenes between Jules and Annie are typically tinged with a reddish or pink lighting filter, kissing their bodies with a sensual neon glow. This works to highlight the cheery vibrancy of their age-driven connection, fueled by goofy pick-up attempts and more teenage cheesiness. When first seeking attention, Annie sits next to Jules, typing on a computer to start conversation, and when the camera pans to her screen, we, AND Jules, see she’s just been typing random letters in jumbled succession. These are the charming little intricacies that add a whimsical juvenility to their “undying” companionship, and Carchietta does his duty to make their poppy interactions just a tad-more flowery (e.g. a signifying chime whenever Annie gets excited about Jules).
It’s weird to boast so much about the fantastic collaboration between Bloom and Therese, because Teenage Cocktail is a much darker film than my review lets on. Frank is a despicable bastard, but he’s beaten down both emotionally, and physically, by two tweenie lovebirds who act recklessly in the name of schoolyard love. But, we’re drawn in by the genuine nature of both leads, and left elated by their anarchistic romance and dreams of something more. Carchietta’s vision is dangerous, dark, and daringly dreamy, and while some might find minor qualms with the more genre aspects of Teenage Cocktail, it’s still a poignant warning about unchecked, free-wielding emotions.
Teenage Cocktail is a sexy, dangerous, and delightfully devious warning about unchecked hormones and the crazy things we do for love.

‘Teenage Cocktail’ Review: An Intoxicating Exploration of Young Love and Passion | SXSW 2016
The power of young love can be intoxicating, especially when it’s brought to screen with such nuance and respect for raw emotion. Teenage Cocktail taps into the innate appeal of high school love stories but also has a unique edge that makes it a riveting romantic rollercoaster and successful thriller at the same time.
The movie stars Nichole Bloom as Annie, the new girl at school. She has a tough time making friends until she happens upon Jules (Fabianne Therese) and an immediate connection ignites between the two. They become fast friends and more, to the point that Annie’s mother (Michelle Borth) worries that they’re spending too much time together. Their friendship is pure, but it turns out, Lynn has a right to be concerned because Jules earns her spending money by flaunting herself in front of paying costumers online and Annie can’t resist the temptation to give it a try.
Teenage Cocktail kicks off as a highly captivating high school coming of age story. Annie’s very self-conscious and awkward, but her loving relationship with her family quickly establishes her as a likable lead that you hope grows comfortable enough to come out of her shell. Those qualities perfectly pave the way towards her budding friendship with Jules. You’ll find yourself rooting for the two to hit it off and when they do, you get just as much satisfaction out of it as they do.
If you’re sick of movies featuring a popular girl manipulating the school outcast, Therese’s character and her effect on Annie will be quite refreshing. Jules doesn’t have an agenda. She isn’t trying to recruit Annie for a web modeling scheme. She simply values having someone who’s always there for her, just like Annie. Teenage Cocktail never neglects the fact that Jules has a hold over her, but it’s woven into the narrative in a more subtle way than we’re used to seeing. Annie is obsessed with Jules and that obsession gives Jules a good deal of control, but it develops in an organic way that justifies the dynamics of their relationship.
As Annie and Jules grow closer and explore their romance more, we meet one of the men who’s fallen for Jules’ online persona. Frank (Pat Healy) has a family that he’s working hard to support, but he’s powerless against the urge to ogle Jules despite the fact that it could topple his fragile marriage. I’ve said this before, but it feels necessary to say it again – Healy needs to be in the spotlight more often. Teenage Cocktail makes a pretty drastic tonal shift towards the end and it works well because of Bloom and Therese’s chemistry, but also largely because Healy has the versatility to support it.
Other performances worth noting are Borth and Joshua Leonard as Annie’s parents. At first they’re your typical loving, well-meaning mother and father, just trying to be supportive while gently coaxing their daughter away from bad behavior. When it becomes apparent that there’s a serious problem that needs to be addressed, it’s especially interesting to see how they both react and in those moments, Borth and Leonard excel by delivering two drastically different performances. Borth boasts one lengthy dialogue-driven scene that’s captured in a single shot yet hits an extremely wide range of beats and emotions. That moment segues into a powerful one-two punch because right after that, we get a scene featuring Leonard that could make you well up due to his facial expressions and body language alone.
The only element of the film that feels a bit artificial is director John Carchietta’s choice to put a red or pink hue over select visuals. He’s pretty consistent with the technique, which tends to pop up during the more romantic, music video-like scenes, but in one particular moment, the switch from natural frames to ones with this filter is so abrupt that it catches you completely off guard and takes you out of the film. [Note: We’ve just been informed that this was the result of a screening glitch so you will not see this in the final film.]
There’s that and two questionable minor plot points, but otherwise Teenage Cocktail is a quality film that goes well beyond entertaining high school romance and makes a lasting impression by highlighting the overwhelming power of blinding passion. Whether it’s Annie’s love for Jules or Jules’ dream to move to New York, Teenage Cocktail manages to inspire you to root for them to achieve their dreams while skillfully weaving in warning signs that there will be consequences to their risky decisions.

You know a movie has been directed by a dude when a father imagines his teenage daughter in lingerie instead of asking her why there is sexy pictures of her and her best friend on her laptop.
was the movie good or did it just have lesbians wearing crop tops in california? i don't care
suddenly im homophobic
An increasingly tedious. cautionary tale? Love story? I don't really know. It doesn't really matter. I went in with an open mind – I need more LGBTQ cinema in my life – but this came off more as male fantasy than anything else. The camera leers on the two central women, failing to treat them with much depth or understanding. It's an airy, paper-thin film, lacking in realistic motivations, a polished form of storytelling or characters worth investing in. It abruptly shifts gear in its final ten minutes, too, becoming an entirely different (and even hastier) film that's devoid of the tension it requires to work. We do get some nice framing and colour work, but the visuals often get lost within a sea of other independent-film-lookalikes. Might be being a bit harsh on this, but when I struggle so much to finish a film, it's hard to be forgiving.
How to create a wannabe good indie movie.
Step 1: Search on youtube "Indie rock Mix 43" and put it as your soundtrack.
Step 2: Characters are supposed to be deep, because they like indie music and also dress diferrently (But also make them normal as fuck in all other ways, and maybe add a bit of stuff that will make them unlikeable.
Step 3: Ruin the ending, and do the buildup for nothing, by showing the ending at the start of the movie.
Step 4: Do a vague ending.
Step 5: Add some bright colors.
Step 6: Teenage Cock
Without spoiling anything, I honestly believe this has the dumbest ending of any film I've seen in my whole life. I was blown away.
