Kitschy Drink Recipes

Alabama Slammer

The Alabama Slammer has been around since the 70s, and there are a few minor variations on it. The most common version blends Southern Comfort with amaretto, sloe gin and orange juice.

Royal Scandal

The Royal Scandal is equal parts Crown Royal, Southern Comfort and amaretto with splashes of sour mix (or lemon juice, if you prefer) and pineapple juice.

Angel Highball

The Angel Highball is one of those drinks that proves a cocktail doesn’t need to be complicated. It’s just Southern Comfort with orange soda – simple as anything, and all about the taste.

Purple Helmeted Warrior

The Purple Helmeted Warrior cocktail features the flavors of orange, peach, lime, lemon and berry. It’s purple and bubbly, hence the name, but probably should not be worn as a helmet. This is a tasty little fruity drink with a nice visual effect from dropping the grenadine down the middle at the very end –

Absolute HB

The Absolute HB blends two white liquors with dry vermouth, a touch of Southern Comfort and a little bit of 7-up. The flavor is a full round citrus with some herbal notes and the peach finish. This is a pretty stiff drink, which makes it interesting as an alternative to any sort of martini. It’s

Hawaiian Redneck

The Hawaiian Redneck is one of those cocktails that’s stronger than it tastes. The flavor is pretty fruity, due to six ounces of pineapple juice. But with two ounces of rum and two more of Southern Comfort, there’s plenty of kick to this drink. The dominant flavor is a sweet but very agreeable blend of

Comfortable Sour

The Comfortable Sour turns Southern Comfort peach liqueur into a sour by adding lemon juice, orange juice and a touch of gomme syrup to keep the tartness just right. This drink is great to relax with. It’s mellow – not too sweet, nor too tart. It’s light and easy to take – not bursting with

The Red Death is a sweet cocktail that blends a number of fruity flavors together: berry, orange, pineapple, peach and blackberry. The result is pretty delicious. This is a great drink to savor and enjoy. Try one the next time you’ve got time to sit a while and sip along. It’s great for unwinding. Recipe

Southern Chase

The Southern Chase is a shot that blends equal parts Galliano, Southern Comfort and Jim Beam to create a taste that’s rather unique. The mellow peach undertones of the Southern Comfort and the sharper licorice-like taste of the Galliano smooth out the Jim… or is it the other way around? This drink may be an

Southern Pink Flamingo

The Southern Pink Flamingo is a tiny little shot that somehow manages to have five ingredients. If you like things that are small and complicated, this one is right up your alley. All kidding aside, this is a delicious little drink. The main flavor is fruit – sweet and tart – but with a background

White Lyan | London, UK

This force-carbonated cocktail takes inspiration from both the Mint Julep and the combination of bourbon and iced tea. The subtle, smoky heat from the chipotle-infused tea syrup adds a layer of richness to an otherwise vibrant summer drink.

Drink Science with Team Lyan: The Best Way to Carbonate Your Cocktail

The White Lyan team offers advice and recipes for a step-by-step guide to carbonating cocktails at home.

Mixed Drinks With Southern Comfort

In 1885, New Orleans bartender Martin W. Heron created Southern Comfort after his patrons asked for something "smoother" than plain whiskey. His recipe, a blend of bourbon, fruits and spices, is still in use today. Southern Comfort -- "SoCo" -- has become a popular liqueur commonly mixed with fruit juice and colas, as well as other liqueurs.

The most famous Southern Comfort cocktail is the St. Louis, a mix of brandy, Southern Comfort and peach puree or syrup. To make it, combine the ingredients in a cocktail shaker with ice. Shake well and serve straight up in a martini glass. The Scarlett O'Hara cocktail made its debut after the success of the film Gone With the Wind in the United States. To make a Scarlett O'Hara, combine Southern Comfort, cranberry juice, club soda and a dash of lime juice. Serve on the rocks in a mason jar. The Alabama Slammer is a newer drink but still a classic, especially in the southern United States. One half ounce each of vodka, Southern Comfort and amaretto, plus 5 ounces of orange juice, equals 1 Alabama Slammer.

Adding fruit juice to Southern Comfort can help bring out its natural, if subtle, fruit flavors. The Southern Comfort Hurricane includes three different fruit juices -- pineapple, lime and orange -- grenadine and simple syrup. Combine the ingredients in a shaker over ice, then serve in a hurricane glass with a cherry or orange garnish. SoCo Party Punch is useful for serving crowds and requires orange juice, lemon-lime soda and lemon juice, in addition to orange and lemon slices for extra fruitiness. Serve over ice in short glasses. The Slam Dunk, another favorite, combines cranberry and orange juices with Southern Comfort.

The Southern Ireland is a nod to SoCo creator Heron's homeland and requires just 2 ingredients: Bailey's Irish Cream and Southern Comfort. Served over ice, its taste is reminiscent of peaches and cream. A similar drink, the Irish Flag, consists of Bailey's, Southern Comfort and creme de menthe. For an extra-creamy, milky cocktail, try a White Threesome. It's a mix of 1 ounce each of Bailey's, Southern Comfort and Kahlua coffee liqueur, plus 6 ounces of milk.

If you're short on ingredients, combining Southern Comfort with what's readily available can still produce a tasty cocktail. To make a Candy Apple, mix Southern Comfort, or Caramel Comfort, the caramel-flavored version of Southern Comfort, with apple juice and Sprite or 7UP. The Comfortable Screw is another popular and easy-to-make cocktail; just combine 1 1/2 ounces of Southern Comfort with 3 1/2 ounces of orange juice and serve over ice. If you've got a bottle of bourbon on hand, you can also make either a Southern Comfort Tea, with SoCo, bourbon and sweet tea; or an American Dream, which combines SoCo, bourbon and cola.
