THE UPSIDE DOWN COCKTAIL CAVERN: The Twit’s Pop-Up in The Vaults

Every evening after 6pm until October 30th, Mr & Mrs Twit are inviting the public into their glorious and gruesome pop up bar at The Vaults in Waterloo.

Launched last week, The Upside Cocktail Cavern gives the public a taste of the truly terrible, Roald Dahl style! With a reception hosted by the wonderful Sam Bompas and Emma Brunjes, our tastebuds started tingling before we’d even sat down. On entry, we were given Prosecco, or, “Big Dead Tree & Sticky Glue Bellini” with cherry and peach fruit glue and a stirring stick, which was convincingly stick-like to look at, but was really a liquorice root. Sitting in a bar, decked out with all manner of different chairs and tables, we really felt part of the set.

We were then treated to a introduction from Sam and Emma into the event itself, and given a whiff “something special if you dare” from Sam Bompas, which smelt like nothing to some, and vomit to others. You soon learn that not all foodie surprises are good surprises when you visit the Twits…

After a descent into the basement, we got a behind-the-scenes peek into the Ghastly Garden with it’s very gruesome guests. A short introduction from Mr & Mrs Twit was enough to get us feeling welcome (and also very unwelcome in true Twits style). We were encouraged to adventure around the garden, with nasty nibbles hidden in every nook and cranny. Grimacing clowns and waiters also floated around, offering us weird and wonderful treats such as the Sting & Tonic, a nettle cordial and tonic, garnished with thistle.

Appetisers included Burnt Bangers, “left in the oven by Mrs Twit for slightly too long” and Sky Rodent Goujons, which may or may not feature freshly shot pigeon with dipping paste. Our favourites were the Moulding Delights blue veined cheese, Aural Scratchings pigs ears and No Squawkings roasted nuts (not a sentence I ever expected to write!)

Finally, into the Cocktail Cavern itself, where the creators have made a drinking hole so wonderfully Twits-ian that Roald Dahl himself would be proud. The upside down bar filled with raggedy rugs and spindly chairs will play all types of games with your senses.

The bar has a great range of disgusting drinks and corking cocktails, and as we were waned, everything on the menu is actually in the drink. Delicacies include Mr Twit’s Beard Old Fashioned made of “all of Mr Twit’s favourite food – pulled straight from his beard”. And, stilton, cornflakes and sardines did indeed swim around the glass we ordered. Thankfully, a spoon was provided so that we could fish out any little extra bites we might have (accidentally, on purpose) missed. Being Bompas & Parr and their magical minds, it was strangely tasty though… And, luckily, less terrifying cocktails such as The Upside-Down Muggle Circus are there to soothe the drinker if any surprise is one too far.

All in all, Dinner at the Twits is a fantastically mad evening. Not to be missed by any Roald Dahl, Bompas & Parr, Creature of London, or Les Enfants Terribles theatre fan. It’s a great reminder for all to be a smidgeon more playful and mischievous in all that we do.

An evening filled with surprise, and a great treat for after work drinks for the public. Mr and Mrs Twit’s Upside Down Cocktail Cavern will be open to the general public from 6pm every day until October 30th.

A cocktail that tastes just like a Pineapple Upside Down Cake will sweeten up your weekend. It’s such a girly drink- insanely sweet and gorgeous in color.

Pineapple Upside Down Cocktail is dessert in a glass, so make sure you skip dessert or I can’t be responsible for your sugar overload. It’s a simple and easy mixture of pineapple juice, cake-flavored vodka (one of the best tasting things ever), amaretto (another one of the best tasting things ever), a little lime juice, and grenadine. Vanilla-flavored vodka can be used in place of the cake-flavored vodka and you could try some coconut-flavored rum in place of the amaretto.

Pretty much any way you make it, it’s going to be delicious.

You pour the grenadine in last and it is supposed to sink to the bottom and form two distinct layers, with the red on the bottom representing the cherries on the bottom of a pineapple upside down cake.

But my layers really blended together, especially by the time I whipped my camera out. It’s still a gorgeous drink though and I’m thinking it is better to have that wonderful sweet flavor of the grenadine all through the drink.

Whether you enjoy one relaxing by the pool or on the back porch with your girlfriends, Pineapple Upside Down Cocktail is an easy, delicious drink to enjoy.

We are heading to the beach tomorrow for a week and I’m thinking I may be packing the cake-flavored vodka to make a few more of these. 🙂

Dress Codes :: defined! From White Tie to Smart Casual.

"Help! The invitation says 'Business Casual', what on earth does that mean?" asked my daughter, who at the tender age of 19 is discovering the complications of dress codes for formal events.

She asked if I could put together a guide for her, to unravel the mysteries of what to wear when a code is requested.

Because, one would never want to be under-dressed, would one?

I always figure it's better to be over-glamorous than under-glamorous.

..it's far easier to get away with it.

So, Glamour Drops presents, for all those panic-stricken occasions when you glance at an invitation & think "What should I wear? Does it mean what it used to?", the ultimate guide to dress codes. in decreasing order of formality. (starting with the very gorgeous, although not often called-for White Tie, followed by Black Tie, Lounge, Cocktail & Business or Smart Casual).

And while it is Ultra Glamorous, a White Tie event doesn't happen that often, except for balls and very formal weddings.

But much more common is a Black Tie event.

Oh so glamorous and a marvellous excuse to go to town on the Glamour Dressing.

Next step down in formality is the Lounge category, which seems a rather odd name to me, but there you go, the English language is there to intrigue us.

Lounge dressing is easy. something a little formal, but not too much so, where elegance is the number one rule.

Cocktail is a little less formal than Lounge, the main difference being the tie is optional for men.

For women there is not so much difference between Lounge & Cocktail, except that Cocktail can be a little more flirty.

And finally, Smart Casual. the category which causes all the angst and confusion.

The very term "smart casual" sounds like a paradox, but if you think of tailored daytime clothing it helps, even though it may be an evening event.

Of course, this doesn't solve the ephemeral claim of "but I have nothing to wear!".

But it's always nice to have a bunch of rules, otherwise, we wouldn't be able to break them, would we?

    Wildfire Cocktail

A recipe on how to make a Wildfire Cocktail. This flaming Game of Thrones inspired cocktail for is caught fire with Bacardi 151 rum and sweetened by using a mix of Midori and Watermelon Vodka to make a melon martini so good you might explode. Perfect for your next Game of Thrones viewing party.

This recipe is for those of the ages of 21+. This cocktail uses flammable Bacardi 151 to create a floating flame, while Elle Talk provides the instruction on how to produce this cocktail safely, please use caution when making it. Elle Talk is not held accountable for anything that could and can happen while creating this drink. By choosing to make this cocktail you have freely chosen to hold yourself liable for any outcomes.

There is only one thing that could turn around my bright white and colorful summer posts and that's the tiniest sign that winter is coming. That's right today's post is in honor of the Game of Thrones' season premiere this weekend! Game of Thrones is one of B & mine's favorite shows. This weekend we'll be skipping our typical Sunday pizza night and pulling out all the stops for a Game of Thrones viewing party. Which will include this show stopping melon martini called Wildfire!

If you're familiar with the show (and if not, look away because spoilers) Wildfire is an explosive green liquid that is used in two seriously major events in the TV story. One when Tyrion wins the Battle of the Blackwater and it shows up again, where we left off last season, with Cersei using it to burn the Great Sept of Baelor. So I knew if I was going to make an electric green cocktail for Game of Thrones, I had to set it on fire. So grab your best heat proof glassware, we're getting you're Game of Thrones party lit.

This cocktail is simple to make but potent to boot. All it is is Midori (any other green colored melon liqueur), watermelon vodka, and regular vodka. You give that a good hard shake in a shaker full of ice and pour into a heat resistant coupe or martini glass if you plan to light it on fire. If not any coupe or martini glass will work.

HOW TO LIGHT WILDFIRE ON FIRE

Warning Bacardi 151 is highly flammable. Please use caution while making this cocktail and make it in a safe environment. Elle Talk is not held liable for fires, burns, or other actions.

After pouring your cocktail into your coupe you'll want to gently turn over a bar spoon placing it up against the inside of the glass above the liquid line. Carefully pour 1/4 ounce of Bacardi 151 on top of the spoon. Let it slowly layer over the top of the cocktail. Seal up your 151 and put it back in your liquor cabinet and wipe away any Bacardi 151 spills/drips from your working area. Then with a long stick lighter (a grill lighter) you'll catch a flame. Let the flame from the lighter just hover over the cocktail until the Bacardi 151 catches fire. Let the fire burn out or blow out when ready to consume. Let the glass cool before drinking from it or use a straw to sip on the cocktail after the fire has been blown out!

    • 1 oz Midori (Melon Liqueur)
    • 0.5 oz Watermelon Vodka
    • 1 oz Vodka
    • 0.25 oz Bacardi 151 (optional)

Warning Bacardi 151 is highly flammable. Please use caution while making this cocktail and make it in a safe environment. Elle Talk is not held liable for fires, burns, or other actions.

BE CAREFUL the glassware will be to hot to touch. Let it cool down to the touch or consume using a straw once the fire is blow out.

How cool is this? It's perfect for Game of Thrones and it's even giving me some Harry Potter Slytherin vibes. I can't wait for Sunday to get here and get all of our Game of Thrones partying started. If you're looking to host a viewing party I've got a Pinterest board chalked full of delicious Game of Thrones recipes and party ideas like this one. I'll leave it below!

Are you excited about the next season of Game of Thrones? Let's swap theories down below in the comments!

    Down Easter Cocktail

The Down Easter cocktail is defined by Merriam-Webster as "one born or living down east." We define it as this lovely apple cider-y cocktail.

Down Easter Cocktail. Just apple cider, bourbon, and citrus. Think of it as a whiskey sour’s older and richer uncle. [Editor’s Note: A word of advice: You may want to go ahead and make a double batch of the apple cider syrup, or an even higher multiple, right away just to have on hand. Because as our testers can attest, after just one sip, you’re going to fancy more than than this cocktail recipe makes. Trust us.] Originally published October 10, 2014.Renee Schettler Rossi

    How The Name

Curious about how the name Down Easter Cocktail name came to be? So were we. So we did a little research. “Down Easter” is defined by Merriam-Webster as “one born or living down east.” Historically, it refers to a late 19th-century ship that ran between Boston and points north, including Maine. More colloquially, it means anyone from Maine. And apparently, it also means this lovely cool weather cocktail concocted from apple cider, bourbon, and citrus. [Editor’s Note: Actually, it makes for quite lovely sipping during any season. And not just in New England.]

    Elie Nassar

What can I say? I absolutely loved this Down Easter cocktail. It's just perfect with notes of candied apple, a good dose of bourbon, and a hit of sharp lemon that prevents it from being too cloying. I highly suggest making double the quantity of the cider syrup because the amount called for is only enough for 2 drinks and you will want more of this baby.

    Julie Houser

The only problem with this Down Easter recipe (excuse me while I take a sip) is that the reduced apple cider only allows for 2 cocktails (another sip). The apple cider reduced easily and quickly, a single lemon gave me exactly the needed measurement, and a lovely old bourbon rounded the cocktail out perfectly. I served it in martini glasses with a large whiskey ice cube. The lemon does make the drink a bit tart. I think 2/3 lemon juice to 1/3 orange juice would make it just a touch smoother. however (sip…sip…), no one in this house is complaining. Except that there's not enough for us to have another. and that makes us sad.

This Down Easter cocktail was fantastic. If you like a whiskey sour, you'll like this. Think of it as a whiskey sour's older and richer uncle. It took me about 25 minutes to boil the cider down, although next time I'll do a larger amount. This makes a great martini but is also equally good on the rocks in a double old-fashioned glass.

“Down East” refers to not just Maine, but that part of Maine, which when traveling to, from the South requires one to go East and then South(down)- the most easterly northern part of the State, and of the United States. I use Boiled Cider that is made in Springfield VT, woodscidermill.com. Good drink! Thanks.

Aha, good to know, Michael. Thanks for taking the time to share that…

Born and raised in Central Maine and I’ve never heard of this wonderful cocktail. Now that I live (from away) in Australia, it’s tough to find fresh cider, especially in Spring. It’s on my Autumn try list. ayuh.

Wishing you luck tracking down the cider, Maureen, and looking forward to hearing what you think of the drink…
