Watermelon Man Cocktail Recipe

  1. Fill 2/3 of cocktail shaker with ice cubes.

  3. Strain and pour prepared watermelon man vodka mix into ice filled collins glass and top up with lemon lime soda.

  • Use pre-chilled ingredients for best result.
  • Add 2-3 dashes of grenadine syrup for nice and presentable red color of cocktail. It will also add nice hint of pomegranate.

Watermelon Drinks

Watermelon is a sweet and refreshing way to cool off in the summer. These drinks and cocktail recipes take summer refreshment to the next level and feature fresh watermelon and other summer fruits such as strawberry and blueberries. Included in this gallery is a watermelon sangria recipe and refreshing watermelon aqua fresca. Try these recipes for your next summer party or barbecue.

Coco Cooler

"This cocktail is a riff on one of my favorite cold-pressed juices: a light-pink, super-hydrating concoction called Aloe Vera Wang," says San Diego bartender Lindsay Nader.

Sandia Smash

Fresh watermelon is one of the most appealing cocktail ingredients. In this refreshing variation of the caipirinha, it is both muddled and used for garnish.

Watermelon Coolers

Bronson Van Wyck borrowed this recipe from his friend Susan Mason, a caterer in Savannah, Georgia. It's potent and refreshing.

Watermelon-Honey-Citrus Refresher

One great thing about blender drinks: The machine does all the work. Adam Seger prefers Vita-Mix blenders, which create especially smooth purees.

Watermelon Sangria

Sangria, a Spanish variation on traditional punch composed of wine, fruit and brandy, was formally introduced to America at the 1964 World’s Fair in New York City.

Watermelon-Tequila Cocktails

When watermelon is in abundance, this is a great way to use it. Bobby Flay purees seedless watermelon chunks, then strains the juice through a sieve and mixes it with silver tequila, sugar syrup, blueberries, mint and fresh lime juice.

In-Sandíary

This cocktail’s name is a play on both the Spanish word for watermelon, sandía, and "incendiary," referring to the peppery tequila and the spicy ancho chile rim.

Watermelon-Strawberry Agua Fresca

Watermelon and Ginger Limeade

Watermelon-Lime Frozen Agua Fresca

Fanny Singer has always had an infatuation with frozen fruit. (The pastry cooks at Chez Panisse used to freeze raspberries for her; she stuck one on each finger and then ate them.) So it's only natural that she makes an icy drink with one of her favorite fruits, watermelon. This agua fresca has the consistency of a frozen margarita.

Blueberry and Watermelon Slushie

Celebrate summer parties with this delicious blueberry and watermelon slushie. It's the perfect cooling drink on hot days.

Watermelon Man

About ten years ago, I decided to learn German. And the best way to do that, according to my brilliant scheme, was spending time in cities where it is spoken. I had heard a lot about Berlin and decided to start there. Of course, as soon as I arrived, I realized the futility of my plan. Seeing as I was only going to be spending a week there before going back home, I gave up on the project as soon as I landed and decided to check out the night life instead. This is how I first tried a cocktail called Watermelon Man and met a living legend.

The Watermelon Man was first concocted at a weekly party held in different bars in Berlin in the mid 90s called: Cookie’s parties. These parties were organized by one of Berlin’s top characters: Cookie himself. I went to one of his parties during my stay and actually got to meet him. He is by far one of the most passionate night owls I have ever met. Always up for a drink, always up for a party and eternally in good spirits. When I asked him how he had come up with the cocktail, he replied: “Because when it’s late, people who drink beer become boring. They need something stronger and sweeter, like love itself”! After a spike in popularity, Cookie and his partners were able to rent their own space, and obviously named it… Cookie’s Bar. Now it’s become a trendy central nightlife attraction in Berlin.

The key beverage in the cocktail is watermelon schnapps, which is a type of distilled alcoholic beverage. The word schnapps is derived from the German Schnaps, which can refer to any strong alcoholic drink, but particularly those containing at least 32% alcohol by volume. The rest of the ingredients include: vodka, cointreau and lime juice. It is a sweet, refreshing cocktail, ideal for a night club (much like this vodka and cranberry tipple).

When I asked Cookie where the name of his cocktail came from, he replied that there was only one thing in life which he loved more than night life, and that was Herbie Hancock, the legendary jazz musician. He named the drink after the song from his debut album “Takin Off”. After that week in Berlin, I could not speak a word of German but had made some great friends and have been back to Cookie’s Bar regularly over the years.

  • 6cl vodka
  • 3cl Watermelon schnapps
  • 3cl Cointreau
  • 1.5cl lime juice
  • 1 bottle lemon lime soda

1. Fill 2/3 of cocktail shaker with ice cubes.

2. Add vodka, watermelon schnapps, cointreau and lime juice in cocktail shaker and shake well.

3. Strain and pour into ice-filled Collins glass.

4. Top it off with lemon lime soda.

5. Garnish with lime wedge and serve with a straw.

Sweet and far from sophisticated, but better than the fodder peddled at most clubs.

Watermelon Basil Gin Cocktail

This is the first of many posts we’ll categorize as “Cocktails with Lieutenant Dan” and we’re starting with a real doozy, a Watermelon Basil Gin Cocktail.

Lieutenant Dan is my husband.

No, he’s not in the military, but his name is Dan. He got the nickname Lt. Dan somewhere around July 1994, but I can’t exactly remember why.

Fortunately, he’s a keeper. We go together like peas and carrots.

There’s nothing hotter than a man who washes dishes, makes linguini from scratch, and shakes a mean martini.

So with that in mind, I give you Lt. Dan…

This is a good thing considering I have a recipe developer, chef and blogger queen as my wife. In many ways our lives revolve around food –food for sustenance, entertainment, community and family. Many of our family vacations revolve around what restaurants to try or what regional cuisine is in season. Food is a major part of our life. But if I am being completely honest, as much as I love to eat… I really, really love to drink.

In that way the wife and I are different. We often say she likes to eat her calories and I like to drink them (which is why we both have to work out all the time).

Do I have the exquisite appetizer or martini? My answer – gin or vodka. Do I go with the chocolate cake or a single malt? Survey says – 18 year Dalwhinnie. How about a thick cut ribeye or robust California Cab? You know the answer… Actually I would rather not have to choose in that situation and have both instead! Anyways, you get the point.

So with that in mind, I have agreed to embark on a once a month post entitled “Cocktails with Lieutenant Dan.” (I know, I know – super cheesy name, but doesn’t hearing Forrest say Lieutenant Dayyan make you smile). I will share classics which I learned from my Great Grandmother and grandmother (where I learned to appreciate cocktails – more on that later) as well as some custom concoctions.

Which brings us to our first cocktail with Lieutenant Dan – the Watermelon Basil Bramble, a watermelon basil gin cocktail. It’s summer, there are tons of fresh fruits and herbs, so why not muddle a few of them together with a bit of grandpas cough medicine!

I definitely need a glass of this tonight!

That sounds wonderful! But if it is too sweet, why not use Selzer instead of 7UP?

Lt. Dan knows how to make a mean cocktail, that is for sure. and he does the dishes? and he uses my favorite gin? wth? :) Love this.

I have yet to make my own watermelon cocktail – this looks perfect, as I’ve recently become a fan of gin. I’m loving this drink series – thank you Sommer and Lt. Dan!!

Cute post!! So nice to meet you, Lt. Dan :)

I have a watermelon in the garage fridge right now. Part of it will be reserved for making these xoxo

I absolutely love that your husband is guest posting! Mine did for a while and got so into it, it was so fun. These cocktails sound delicious and would totally guzzle it down [minus the gin] right now!

Looks so refreshing! Today would have been perfect weather for this, but there’s always tomorrow ;)

I am dying over these pictures – so good! And I love a good cocktail… can’t wait to see what Lt Dan continues to bring to the table, so to speak!

Wonderful post and how sweet of you to let your hubby post. Drink look very refreshing, thank you for sharing and also for linking my frap too!

Have a wonderful weekend!

This looks so delicious. I’ve been making cocktails featuring rum all afternoon, but seeing this makes me want to go out and buy some gin. Here in Spain the watermelons are so sweet and delicious I know this would come out great!

Nice to meet you mr. Lt. Dan. I love the idea of the monthly cocktail and you’ve started it out on a great note. Now I need a reason to give this one a try. Or do I.

Reading this made me think you were creating a bio of my husband and myself. Our friends and family think it’s odd that we take vacations to seek out a particilar cuisine or chef we’ve read about! My husband is more the calories from beverages kinda guy as well.

So glad I saw this pinned! Kep on cookin and shakin!

Boozy Watermelon Mint Lemonade

I’m going to let you in on a little secret: even if you’re the manliest of manly, rugged, bearded, I-only-drink-straight-whiskey kind of man, you will smile like a giddy schoolgirl when you take a sip of this hot pink drink. That’s right, I said it. Feel no shame as the brightly colored sweet drops cling to your mustache; simply inform everyone that a hard-working man like yourself needs a nice refreshing drink in the brutal heat of summer as you’re out doing manly man things. Or whatever.

And if you’re not a whiskey-drinking, crime-fighting, axe-wielding dude, then I probably had you sold on this drink the second you read the title of the post. Boozy. Watermelon. Mint. Lemonade. This is the Ryan Gosling of drinks, ladies. It’s a game-changer. It’s what love stories are made of.

How many servings does this make? And can you guesstimate how many cups of watermelon to use? Sounds delicious! Thank you 🙂

I believe it should be somewhere around 5 cups, but the “National Watermelon Promotion Board” (thank you google) says there are approximately 3.2 cups per pound, so that would be 8 cups. I’d say start off with 5 cups and add more if necessary.

Thank you! I made it last night for a party– it was a huge hit! Thank you so much:). And I cut up my whole watermelon, which was about 8 cups, maybe a little more. I had the small size jars (set of 12 from target), and I filled them with some leftover. Fabulous! Thank you!

I’m happy to hear that you (and the party guests, of course) liked it so much!

I guess the National Watermelon Promotional Board was right about that one– I don’t know why I thought I remembered there being so much less.

This drink looks delicious! I am planning on making it for a BBQ this weekend with a lot of people. How many drinks do you think this recipe makes? I’m wondering if I should double it.

Caroline, I can’t remember exactly, but Lindsay, a commenter above, mentioned that she had enough to fill 12 small jars with some leftover. The recipe yields a lot of the drink (the huge jar and the two mason jars in my photos are all from the same batch, and there was a bit more leftover that I drank immediately… for taste-testing reasons of course) but if you’re having a very large party you might want to double the recipe or make one and a half batches.

When you say agave syrup, where can I buy this? or simple syrup, what would that be? I would love to try this recipe!

Agave syrup should be available in your grocery store in the baking section. Here is a recipe for simple syrup if you would prefer to use that: http://allrecipes.com/recipe/simple-syrup/
