Modern Summer Cocktails

What better way to cool off during the warm summer months than with a cool and refreshing summer cocktail? Whether you are grilling in the back yard, throwing a summer party or just chilling out, these delightful cocktail recipes are sure to refresh as well as impress. Try a few of our favorites like strawberry-lemon mojitos and slushy frozen cucumber-honeydew drinks and many more.

Watermelon-Tequila Cocktails

When watermelon is in abundance, this is a great way to use it. Bobby Flay purees seedless watermelon chunks, then strains the juice through a sieve and mixes it with silver tequila, sugar syrup, blueberries, mint and fresh lime juice.

Tabernacle Crush

This light and refreshing cocktail is as reminiscent of the American South as it is of the South of France.

Limoncello Collins

The Collins was most likely named after 19th-century bartender John Collins of London’s Limmer’s Hotel. The Tom Collins was originally made with Old Tom, a sweet style of gin that’s extremely hard to find today.

Colorado Cooler

Stranahan’s Colorado Whiskey is a distinctive small-batch whiskey made in Denver from 100 percent malted barley. The flavor is malty and slightly vanilla-y.

Strawberry-Lemon Mojitos

Strawberries sweeten these mojitos from mixologist Joaquin Simo.

Sunset Punch

Cucumber-Honeydew Freeze

Fruit flavors generally mix well if they’re from the same botanical family. This cool and light summer cocktail works because cucumber and melon both belong to the Cucurbitaceae family.

Chasing Summer

"I love this drink so much that it seems like my glass is always empty," says Lacy Hawkins, bartender at The NoMad in New York City. Her favorite part is the balsamic vinegar. "It adds wonderful acidity to the drink and creates a caramelized finish."

California Caipirinha

Duggan McDonnell of San Francisco's Cantina riffs on the caipirinha by embellishing the classic combination of Cachaça, sugar and lime with Essensia Orange Muscat from Quady Winery in Madera, California.

More Great Summer Drinks

Mango-Peach Sangria

John Besh serves this lightly sweet, fruity white-wine sangria over plenty of ice cubes. “Use Viognier—it has a nice balance of fruit and acidity,” he says.

Silver Monk

Big grains of salt rim many a margarita glass. But as this cocktail proves, a pinch of salt can add complexity to sophisticated bittersweet drinks.

Porch Crawler

Chef-partners Frank Falcinelli and Frank Castronovo and their friend Travis Kauffman concocted this terrifically refreshing cooler one hot summer night with ingredients from Falcinelli’s rooftop garden.

Redhead in Bed

One of chef Chris Yeo’s first jobs was bartending. “But that was many, many, many years ago,” he says. So he left it to his bar team to create this vibrant strawberry-and-vodka cocktail topped with a splash of white wine.

Manhattan Ice Cream Float

Gabriel Frasca makes his own bourbon ice cream and cherry syrup for this clever riff on a Manhattan. For his superquick version, he blends vanilla ice cream with bourbon and uses a high-quality black cherry soda like Stewart’s or IBC.

“This is the drink I would choose instead of dessert after a big meal,” says John Coltharp. Fruity, spicy Redbreast Irish whiskey is excellent with the blackberries.

Rhuby Daiquiri

A slice of rhubarb pie gave bartender Katie Loeb the idea for this Floridita Daiquiri variation. “Tweaking a daiquiri with rhubarb seemed like a good starting point,” she says. “Ginger and Chinese five-spice powder take the drink to the next level.”

Cucumber-Lime Pops with Gin

Tim Love freezes all kinds of cocktails on sticks for backyard parties, but his cucumber-mint version is especially good on a blazing-hot day. To prevent the pops from melting too quickly, he adds gelatin to the mixture.

Blanca Julep

Jennifer Zerboni likes to tinker with the classic mint julep during horse-racing season. She used to flavor this julep with a mint granité, but that proved “too sticky and messy.” Now she makes the drink with mint simple syrup.

Thai-Basil Sangria

The Spanish drink sangria draws its name from the blood-red color of its traditional red wine base. This stripped-down version gets its rich golden hue—and zingy flavors—from white wine, fresh-squeezed orange juice and a kick of brandy.

Cajun Lemonade

Cucumber Margarita

The only thing more refreshing than a margarita is one made with cucumbers. The cucumber-infused tequila also makes a great punch.

Minted Blueberry Lemonade

Make this refreshing and summer-inspired lemonade when fresh blueberries are in season or plentiful at the farmers markets.

Basil Limeade Slushies

A splash of soda water makes these tart slushies pleasingly bubbly. With a little rum, they'd also make great cocktails.

Hibiscus Swizzle

Swizzles are drinks that are typically served over crushed ice and churned with a swizzle stick until supercold. Small ice cubes are a fine substitute for crushed ice.

Tequila-Watermelon Aguas Frescas with Prosecco

In this refreshing cocktail, Prosecco adds a lively spritz to a light, watermelon-forward margarita. If you happen to have a juicer on hand, you can certainly use it here.

Homemade Liqueurs

Take advantage of summer fruit to make homemade liqueurs. Many require weeks or months of infusing fruit to get the best flavors.

Mixer Magic

Nothing's easier to make than simple syrup. If you like, infuse the syrup with other flavors, like mint (for mojitos) or lemon (for iced teas, Collins, and other summer drinks).

Don't Forget the Ice!

It's often overlooked. But the best tasting cocktails use fresh ice made from pure, filtered water. "Fresh" means the cubes haven't been sitting around for weeks in the freezer soaking up the stale flavor essences of long-lingering foods. Bring the water to a quick boil for best results. Make it the morning of the day you plan to mix your cocktails, and you’ll enjoy the freshest, most delicious cocktails. And, yes, we do have a recipe for Cocktail Ice.

Muddled Lemonberryade

Green Tea and Orange Cooler

This simple drink will cool you down all summer long and has only three ingredients: green tea, orange and agave nectar. You could also turn this into a cocktail with a splash of vodka or tequila.

Watermelon Martinis

Kelsey's lemonade gains fizz from sparkling water and depth from vanilla bean paste. Simple syrup balances out this favorite sip while scattered basil or mint adds summery freshness.

Frothy, rice-based horchata instantly cuts through the heat of a hot summer day. Served with festive straws and topped with a sprinkle of cinnamon, Kelsey's version is perfect for a Latin-inspired brunch.

Endless Summer Cocktail (Five Ingredient Friday)

    The Saucy Southerner

    Endless Summer Cocktail

Ocean breezes, lounging by the pool, bright sunshine, blue skies, puffy white clouds and long, lazy days of summer are coming to a close. “Nobody on the road; Nobody on the beach; I feel it in the air; The summer’s out of reach.” But summer will never be out of reach with this Endless Summer Cocktail recipe on hand to help you call up summer, anytime.

Whether you’re a harried parent who is celebrating the end of summer and restless children finally headed back to school, or someone who’s desperately clinging to the last vestiges of the carefree summer life, this cocktail is for you. And let’s face it, even if, for whatever reason, we’re yearning for cooler weather, or a change of foods, or shorter days and cozy times lounging by the fireplace instead of the pool, everyone gets to the point that they need an infusion of summer.

I had something else entirely planned for today’s Five Ingredient Friday post, but yesterday I stepped out on our upstairs porch before sunrise. The air held that crisp, cool feeling that is the portent of Fall. Later, I was contemplating the front porch winterization…packing away the porch swing cushions and pillows, removing the flowerpots and citronella burners…and I was a little bit sad. You see, I’m not quite ready to see my pretty pink Impatiens be replaced with mums. I’m not quite ready for my Wee Kitchen Garden to be dormant. I’m not quite ready for summer to end. I’m not quite ready.

So rather than wallow in an end-of-summer funk, I decided to come up with a cocktail that would celebrate the flavours of summer in such a way that it would call it back to me. A cocktail that was sunny, vibrant, fruity, citrus-y; a cocktail that would put the summer sunshine back into my mind…an Endless Summer Cocktail…that’s just what I needed!

Because it just happened to be five ingredients…well, that made it the perfect thing for today’s post! The five ingredients are:

So, celebrate summer…an Endless Summer…anytime with this delightfully refreshing cocktail. But remember…please drink responsibly!

    • 2 ounces Peach Schnapps
    • 2 ounces Pineapple juice
    • 2 ounces Orange juice (I used fresh squeezed, but any kind would work.)
    • 1 ounce orange liqueur (such as Cointreau, Grand Marnier, Triple Sec)
    • Healthy squeeze of fresh lime juice
    1. Place all the ingredients into a cocktail shaker with some ice.
    2. Shake vigorously and pour into a glass of your choice.

    The Saucy Southerner

I started cooking when I was ten years old. For me, the process of cooking, from inception of a dish, to the execution, to the washing of the pots is sheer delight.

I am now retired from a business I still own, in partnership with my husband. I used to work six days a week and still cook every night. Now, I’m gardening, still cooking, always having fun and hoping to share my joy with you. Thank you for reading…and commenting! P

We love this recipe because it's got strong tea flavor without being bitter, and it's sweet but not cloying.

    Cool Lavender Lemonade

Lavender and mint add a fresh herb flair to classic lemonade. This recipe is perfect for lemonade stands and backyard parties alike.

Sangria, Summer Punch, and Cooler Recipes

A pitcher of cool, refreshing sangria or punch makes any barbecue, cookout or summer party a little more special. Browse our collection of red, white, and pink sangrias, as well as fresh, fruity coolers, and punch recipes, both alcoholic and alcohol-free, made with watermelon, pineapple, cucumber, raspberries, and other luscious summer fruit.

    Summer Fruit Sangria

Choose a crisp white wine, such as Sauvignon Blanc or Pinot Grigio, and mix in orange liqueur, fresh ginger, lemon juice, basil, or mint leaves. Then, add your choice of summer fruits such as pineapple, cantaloupe, and apricots. This refreshing white sangria can be prepared up to a day in advance.

    Summer Spritzes

Add some variety to your lemonade-and-iced-tea routine with one of these cool, fruit-filled sparklers. They're deft as midday thirst-quenchers -- and delightful spiked to make fun cocktails for an evening get-together. Start with the refreshing pineapple-cucumber combo, then try the Hibiscus-Ginger Spritz and Spicy Grapefruit Spritz. Sip and repeat!

A mix of white wine and fruits, this lively South American version of sangria is destined to be your new summer sip.

    Pimm's Cup with Ginger Ale

The Pimm's Cup, which dates back to 1840s London, may well be the definitive summer cocktail! This recipe combines Pimm's No. 1 (a fruity, spicy, gin-based liqueur) with lemonade, ginger ale, and a splash more gin.

    Rose Sangria

This blushing pink sangria is made with rose wine and white cranberry juice. Begin by macerating blueberries, blackberries, strawberries, and raspberries in sugar and raspberry liqueur for an hour, then add the wine and juice.

    Watermelon Punch and Bowl

A ripe watemelon becomes both punchbowl and drink with this fun, kid-friendly recipe. Scoop out the watermelon and puree the flesh in a food processor. Just before serving, mix the pureed fruit with chilled seltzer and pour into the hollowed-out melon shell.

    Prosecco Sangria

Use Prosecco or any other sparkling white wine to make this light, fruity party punch. Macerate sliced peaches, nectarines, and apricots in peach brandy before stirring in the bubbly.

    Kiwifruit Caipiroska

The caipiroska is a vodka-based version of the classic Brazilian caipirinha cocktail of muddled limes, sugar, and cachaca (a spirit made from sugar cane). To make this vivid punch, kiwis are blended and strained, and the resulting juice is combined with tonic water, limeade, and vodka.

    Bing Cherry Mojitos

Soak halved bing cherries in lime juice and simple syrup to give them a sweet zing. Deepen the cherry flavor of this punch by using black cherry vodka (plain vodka is fine, too) and top off with sparkling water.
