Vodka Sunrise

THIS PAGE MAY CONTAIN AFFILIATE LINKS. PLEASE READ MY DISCLOSURE.

The Vodka Sunrise is a lot like the Tequila Sunrise, only with vodka instead of tequila. Or you could think of it as a Screwdriver with a healthy amount of grenadine added in.

This is a very tasty drink that’s actually quite light on the alcohol, making it a good choice for breakfast or any occasion where you prefer lighter drinking. If it’s not strong enough for you, you can always up the vodka by a half-ounce or an ounce and reduce the orange juice accordingly.

The Vodka Sunrise cocktail is just like the Tequila Sunrise, but with vodka in place of the tequila. That makes it a nice alternative for Tequila Sunrise lovers, and a great replacement for those who don't like tequila.

2 min Prep Time

2 min Total Time

  1. Pour the vodka and orange juice into a highball glass.
  2. Stir them thoroughly.
  3. Pour in the grenadine syrup.
  4. Garnish with an orange wheel.

Tequila Sunrise cocktail

THIS PAGE MAY CONTAIN AFFILIATE LINKS. PLEASE READ MY DISCLOSURE.

The Tequila Sunrise is another orange juice based cocktail, like the Screwdriver, the Orange Blossom and the Harvey Wallbanger. The long-standing appeal of these drinks is actually the orange juice – it hydrates your body and provides Vitamin C to prevent or reduce hangover effects, but you still get your alcohol kick, too.

They’re a great choice to serve guests who are just social drinkers, but they’re equally popular with more dedicated drinkers. The flavor is orange and berry, which is a generally likable combination, even for people who don’t like tequila. (If you have a guest who really doesn’t like tequila, serve them the Vodka Sunrise, which is virtually the same drink, only with the less flavorful vodka in place of the tequila.)

The Tequila Sunrise gets its name from the visual effect of the grenadine dropping to the bottom, then slowly rising. That gives it a red layer at the bottom that slowly blends into an orange layer. This method of dropping the grenadine in slowly is actually the easiest way to get the effect of a layered cocktail.

Tequila Sunrise Recipe

  • 4 ounces orange juice (fresh squeezed is preferred)
  • 2 ounces white tequila
  • 1/2 ounce grenadine

Put ice cubes into a highball glass. Pour in the tequila followed by the orange juice. Now slowly pour the grenadine straight down the middle, so it sinks to the bottom. Optionally garnish with a citrus wedge or sliver of orange peel. If you find it difficult to pour slowly, here are some suggestions:

  • Use a pour spout over the bottle.
  • Pour as thin a stream as you can get out of the bottle over the back of a spoon, a technique we covered here with video, photos and instructions.
  • Pour your grenadine into a paper cup, crease the brim of the cup, and pour slowly at the crease.

Sweet Sunrise: The Ideal Mocktail for a Casual Brunch

  • 3 mins

Take the tequila out of the Tequila Sunrise and you have a Virgin (or Sweet) Sunrise. It is a fantastic mixed drink for any time of the day and the recipe is unbelievably easy to make.

Essentially, the Virgin Sunrise is a simple way to enhance a tall glass of orange juice. It adds the sweetness of grenadine to offset the tart citrus and because it's served on the rocks, it's quite refreshing. Once you learn the beauty of this easy mocktail, it may even replace your morning orange juice.

About The Teal-quila Sunrise Cocktail

This fun, summer take on the Tequila Sunrise knocks out the grenadine for homemade raspberry syrup (don’t worry, it’s easy!) and a dash of blue curaçao for a drink that’s as tasty as it is colorful.

Ingredients in The Teal-quila Sunrise Cocktail

How to make The Teal-quila Sunrise Cocktail

Pour the syrup into a Highball glass and fill with crushed ice.

Add the rest of the ingredients to a shaker with ice, and shake until chilled.

Strain over the crushed ice.

Garnish with a lemon twist and raspberry.

*Raspberry syrup: In a small glass, muddle 6 raspberries. Add 6 oz simple syrup and stir. Fine-strain into a separate glass to remove the seeds.

The Tequila Sunrise Cocktail

The Tequila Sunrise Cocktail is a very popular long drink perfect for hot summer days thanks to its refreshing qualities and fruity flavors. The cocktail can be prepared in two ways, but there are many other variations as well, which change the alcohol composition, or even that of its liquid companions. This mixed drink was invented by Gene Sulit at the bar of the Arizona Biltmore Hotel, some time during the 1930s-1940s.

Tequila Sunrise Cocktail picture

The name of the cocktail was suggested to its inventor by the drink’s final colors, which reminded him of a sunrise. As the denser ingredients of the drink settle on the bottom of the glass, the lighter ones stay at the surface and form a layered composition in the orange and yellow colors of the sunrise. The original version of the Tequila Sunrise cocktail, the one invented by Gene Sulit, contains the following ingredients: tequila, creme de cassis, soda water and lime juice. The other version, which is much more popular, contains ingredients like tequila, grenadine syrup and orange juice. It was invented by Billy Rice and Bobby Lazoff in the 1970s at the Trident restaurant, located in Sausalito, California.

Because it is considered a long drink in the official International Bartenders’ Association list, the Tequila Sunrise cocktail is usually served in a highball glass. However, you may find it in various types of glasses depending on the location. Here is how this mixed drink is usually prepared, and the ingredient quantities:

  • 45 ml tequila
  • 90 ml orange juice
  • 15 ml grenadine juice

You take the highball glass and fill it with ice, and then you pour the tequila and the orange juice over it. The next step is to pour the grenadine juice gently, and wait for it to settle on the bottom of the glass. Under any circumstances you mustn’t stir the mixture, otherwise the whole gradual effect of the drink is lost, and you can no longer call it a Tequila Sunrise. The glass can be garnished with a slice of orange, a maraschino cherry, or even a slice of lime. Finally, here are some of the variations of Tequila Sunrise cocktail which you can have:

  • Tequila Sunset – the grenadine is replaced by dark rum or blackberry brandy;
  • Vodka Sunrise – The tequila is replaced by vodka;
  • Southern Sunrise – Southern Comfort instead of tequila;
  • Astronaut Sunrise – the orange juice is replaced by Tang;
  • Florida Sunrise – the same amounts of orange juice and pineapple juice are used;
  • Red Sea Sunrise – tequila is replaced by Sprite or lemonade in this non-alcoholic version;
  • Enamorada Sunrise – the grenadine syrup is replaced by Campari.

Tequila Sunrise Cocktail Recipe

Like the changing colors of a sunrise, the beauty of this cocktail is it’s ability to change flavors as you progressively sip it to it’s conclusion hence the name Tequila Sunrise.

The look of the drink itself can remind you of the first time you sat awake staring off into the distance watching the ball of fire creep over the horizon. Each color does in fact represent a different ingredient holding it’s set of unique sweet tastes but also masking the harsh impact of straight tequila.

It’s believed to have originated in the paradise cities of Cancun and Acapulco and gained popularity in the 70’s. Try one the next time you’re visiting a Caribbean city or spend a day relaxing by the beach.

When making a Tequila Sunrise follow the directions carefully as it calls for a quick pour of Grenadine to allow it create the presentation you’re looking for.

  • ½ Ounce Grenadine
  • 1 Ounce Tequila
  • Orange Juice
  • Cherry for Garnish
  1. Add ice to a highball glass first.
  2. Add the Tequila and fill with Orange Juice leaving enough room for ½ Ounce Grenadine.
  3. Pour the ½ Ounce Grenadine by quickly turning the bottle up to pour in a swift motion and pouring onto the side of the glass and quickly returning the bottle back to a non-pouring position to create the "sunrise" effect.

Coconut Sunrise Moonshine Recipe Cocktail

It's summertime, and I'm swooning over delicious fruity cocktails. So, when Stillhouse Moonshine offered to send over a bottle of their Coconut Moonshine…….I jumped at the opportunity to create a fun drink. This Coconut Sunrise Moonshine Recipes Cocktail is a perfect combination of coconut, orange, and the classic moonshine you love!

I've been experimenting with different flavors……and have been in love with coconut lately (doesn't it seem like the perfect summer flavor?). What is moonshine (besides awesome?)……it's a fancy word for a distilled spirit…..and Stillhouse's is pretty delish. This corn-based liquor is pure, smooth and makes AMAZING cocktails.

Coconut Sunrise Moonshine Recipes Cocktail

If you aren't familiar with a sunrise cocktail, it is typically a combination of orange juice and another fruit flavored liquor. Using this with grenadine to create what is now one of my favorite moonshine recipes was an easy idea!

If you are new to mixing up cocktails, grab this Mixologist World Cocktail Shaker Set. It's a perfectly affordable and functional option to make sure your cocktail turns out fabulous!

3 jiggers of Stillhouse Coconut Moonshine

5 cups of orange juice

Combine all liquids in a cocktail shaker.

Shake, then pour over ice.

Garnish with shredded coconut and maraschino cherries.

I loved serving up this Coconut Sunrise Moonshine Recipes Cocktail in a simple mason jar with a colorful paper straw. It definitely made the drink color pop! Any nice large glass would work for this drink, but there is something about a mason jar that goes perfectly with moonshine. Don't you think?

For extra flavor, you can even toast some of the coconut shreds to add to the top of your drink! I prefer mine without toasting, but the possibilities are endless. With more and more fruit inspired moonshine recipes out there these days, I am sure I'll be sharing more cocktails like this in the future!

Interested in other moonshine cocktails? Check out this grown up peace iced tea! It's a great twist on a classic summer beverage you'll love!

Thank you to Stillhouse Original Moonshine for providing samples of their DELISH Coconut Moonshine.

    Sunrise Mocktail

    It does look like sunrise in a glass, doesn’t it? I am super excited to share this amazing mocktail with all of you, but first, I must tell you how it came to be.

    I mentioned in this post that a bunch of us have decided to do a monthly blog post based on a common theme. When the majority voted for cold beverages and started talking about cocktails this month, I secretly shuddered. We are teetotalers, you see. I use wine in cooking and that’s about it.

    Then I realized this is a golden opportunity for me to expand my horizons. This blog could do with a cocktail/mocktail recipe and I was now a girl on a mission. Though we do not consume alcohol, my husband is a fruit juice junkie. He loves trying new combinations and flavors. But I really wanted to try my hand at a classic mocktail.

    That is when I heard about the sunrise cocktail. Generally made with a shot of tequila, orange juice and grenadine, it is called so because the gradation of colors in the drink resemble a sunrise. The tequila was obviously out and so was grenadine, because I hate cherry-flavored anything.

    What’s red and sweet, other than cherries? Why, strawberries, of course! I made a quick homemade syrup using juicy red strawberries.

    Would you look at that? Don’t you just want to dip your spoon in it and forget all your worries for a while?

    For the yellow-orange colors, I thought of using a combination of fresh orange juice and club soda. That’s when I came across these golden bottles on my weekend grocery run. What you see below are bottles of Izze sparkling clementine juice, which are the perfect golden-yellow color for my mocktail. (I have no connection whatsoever with this particular brand, I just happen to love their sparkling fruit juice line.) You can use OJ and sparkling water/club soda instead.

    What sets a good mocktail apart from an excellent one are the little details, the perfect garnishes. Herbs and lime wedges are simple additions which will make a pretty drink. Which herb goes well with strawberries and oranges? Rosemary or maybe, sage. I first thought of mint, but it might be a tad overpowering in this drink. But feel free to use what you prefer or leave it out entirely.

    Once you have all the ingredients on hand, it is time to assemble the drink. Since there is carbonated juice involved, you obviously cannot make this ahead. But the strawberry syrup keeps well for a few days, so that can be made ahead and stored in the refrigerator.

    Let’s see how we get the sunrise effect, shall we? It’s so cool, like a little chemistry experiment. You fill a tall glass with crushed ice or small ice cubes. Add the sparkling juice next. Then drizzle a few spoonfuls of the sweet strawberry syrup on top. And right before your eyes, you will see it settling down at the bottom of the glass. Gently nudge with a straw or spoon to help it along. Then you tuck in a sprig of fragrant rosemary, add a wedge of lime or lemon and serve.

    If you cannot find the sparkling clementine juice I used here, feel free to use lemon-lime soda or a combination of fresh orange juice and club soda. For a proper cocktail, replace part of the juice with a shot of tequila or vodka.

    I made my strawberry syrup extra thick, but when stirred slightly, it made a beautiful red-orange-yellow gradation in the glass, just like a sunrise. This was undoubtedly the best drink I’ve ever had. We had rains and fog the last week in Texas. But true to Texas tradition, the weather did a 180 degree turnaround and Sunday was very warm. This drink hit the sweet spot on a warm and lazy Sunday afternoon. Try it for yourself and see.

    SUNRISE MOCKTAIL DRINK

    For the strawberry syrup,

    • Strawberries – 1 lb, washed and hulled
    • Sugar – 1/2 cup (more or less, depending on the sweetness of the berries)
    • Water – 1/4 cup
    • Lime juice – a small squeeze

    For the drink (Makes three 8-oz drinks),

    • Crushed ice – enough to fill 3 tall glasses
    • Sparkling clementine or orange juice – 12 fl.oz (or use a combination of fresh juice and club soda)
    • Strawberry syrup – 4-6 tbsp
    • Rosemary – 3 sprigs
    • Lime – 1, cut into thin wedges (to garnish)

    • Strawberry Syrup: Puree and strain the strawberries. You will have roughly 2 cups of thick strawberry pulp.
    • Take this pulp, sugar, water and lime juice in a deep saucepan and bring to a gentle boil. Reduce heat and simmer for 10-15 minutes or till syrup thickens and coats a spoon dipped in it. You will have roughly 1 cup of syrup.
    • Cool this syrup and store in a clean jar in the refrigerator till needed.
    • Sunrise Mocktail: To make a drink, start by loosely filling a tall glass with crushed ice or small ice cubes. Then add the sparkling juice (or a combination of fresh juice and club soda). Drizzle 1-2 tbsp of strawberry syrup on top and wait for it to sink to the bottom. Gently nudge the ice around with a straw or spoon to guide the syrup down. Tuck a sprig of fresh rosemary in the drink and garnish with a thin wedge of lime. Serve immediately. Gently swirl or stir with the straw while drinking to distribute the syrup better.

    • If you do not get the sparkling clementine juice, try this with lemon-lime soda. Or you can use a combination of fresh orange juice and sparkling water (or club soda). I wouldn’t advise using canned orange soda like Crush or Fanta, because it has a very strong taste and a dark orange color, so you may not see the pretty gradation of colors.
    • For a true cocktail, replace part of the juice in the recipe above with a shot of tequila or vodka.

    And there you have it, a beautiful drink anyone would love to have. Drink up and cheers till the next time!

    That looks so delicious. It is making me feel thirsty! One thing – I was under the impression that grenadine was pomegranate based. Maybe there’s different types, but perhaps you would love the pom version if you got hold of one or made your own for future mocktails. I’m a big fan of the stuff!

    Thank you, Karina. Like I said, not a big cocktail person, we are teetotallers. I’ve only come across pom/cherry grenadine, never a pomegranate only version. As for pomegranate, it’s my favorite fruit to be eaten, I somehow do not ever enjoy it in liquid form…lol!

    I can relate – I’m not so in to it in juice format, but for some reason, have always loved grenadine syrup 🙂 Used to drink it years ago in non-alco drinks with pineapple juice, squeeze of lime and ginger cordial! Your post reminded me. Happy mocktailing!

    love the looks of this! especially the fresh herbs 🙂

    Utterly gorgeous Anjana! Gonna make this in the summer. Brilliant photos!!

    Thank you, Naina. I am sure you’ll love it!
