10 Skinny Cocktails

Watermelon Mojito: 100 Calories

A whole day of eating right can go down in the swirl of cocktail -- with crazy-high calories and weakened willpower. So we've put a few drinks on a diet, starting with the Cuban mojito. Instead of using sugar, use a wooden pestle or a big spoon to gently crush cubes of watermelon with fresh mint leaves. Add rum and sparkling water for a sweet mojito with half the usual calories.

Simple Margarita: 170 Calories

Skip the syrupy mixes in crazy colors and you'll trim hundreds of calories from this Mexican cocktail. Measure out the basics: one shot of tequila, lime juice to taste, and a splash of triple sec. Shake with ice and serve. Staying within the limits of moderate drinking -- one for women and up to two drinks per day for men -- is another way to watch your calories and your waistline.

Skinny Piña Colada: 229 Calories

Rum that's infused with a coconut flavor can cut about 300 calories from a piña colada. What's out? The sugary, coconut milk mix. Measure one shot of coconut rum. Then add fresh strawberries, a splash of agave syrup, and blend with ice. You get a tall, 12-ounce tropical cocktail for about the same calories as in a handful of pretzel twists.

Shochu Cosmo: 70 Calories

Make a super-slim cosmopolitan by replacing the vodka with shochu, a Japanese spirit with a smooth flavor. A 2-ounce serving has only about 35 calories. Add splashes of diet cranberry juice, fresh lime juice, and orange juice, and then toss in a martini shaker. This cosmo shakes out at half the calories of a traditional cosmopolitan.

Slim Berry Daiquiri: 145 Calories

Simple, unadorned berries can help slim down a strawberry daiquiri. Start with 1 cup of no-sugar-added berries, either fresh or frozen. You get intense berry flavor for just 50 calories, compared with 255 calories in berries frozen with syrup. Add rum, ice, and sweeten the deal with 1 teaspoon of stevia, a sugar substitute. Blend into a slim and delicious frozen concoction.

Slim the Gin and Tonic: 75 Calories

Did you know that tonic water has nearly as many calories as soda? Switch to diet tonic water for a skinny version of this favorite cocktail. Bubbly seltzer water is another option that can shave calories -- although it's really a different drink without the bitter nip of quinine in the tonic water. In that case, punch up the flavor with a squeeze of lime juice or a flavored seltzer.

Better Bellini: 120 Calories

Slim down Italy's festive Bellini by using just 2 ounces of peach nectar, about half the usual amount. Swirl the syrupy nectar together with 4 ounces of champagne and serve in a pretty, fluted glass. Mimosa lovers can try the same trick to cut the calories: use just half of the usual orange juice.

Asian Flavor Fusion: 90 Calories

Flavor-infused alcohols are a tasty way to limit juice mixes, which can be high calorie. Try ginger vodka and lime sparkling water for a fusion of Asian flavors at just 90 calories. Look for flavored seltzer or mineral waters that have no added calories.

Skinny Vodka Iced Tea: 80 Calories

The mix of lemonade and sweet iced tea, favored by golfer Arnold Palmer, becomes a popular cocktail when you add a shot of vodka. You can slice off half the calories in this tall, cool drink by using low-calorie lemonade and sweet-tea-flavored vodka. This specialty vodka is lower in calories than traditional types.

Lemongrass Collins: 90 Calories

Enjoy the tart flavor of a Tom Collins without the syrupy mix, sugar, and other sweeteners that bartenders often swirl into your glass. Our skinny version starts with vanilla vodka, instead of gin. Vanilla carries a sweet flavor with very few calories. Add a splash of lime juice and a zero-calorie sparkling water flavored with lemongrass, mint, and vanilla.

Skinny Cocktail Dos

  • Choose fresh 100% juice rather than mixes.
  • Use zero-calorie bubblers instead of soft drinks. Try flavored seltzer, sparkling water, or club soda.
  • Fewer ingredients mean fewer calories.
  • Pay attention. Moderation is key for your waistline and health.

Skinny Cocktail Don'ts

  • Don't add creamed spirits or liqueurs. They double the calories in a cocktail.
  • Don't use several shots in one drink. A Long Island iced tea has seven ingredients and 700 calories!
  • Don't order an after-dinner drink, which is often sweet.
  • Don't sip a sweet dessert wine, which has about 40 calories more than table wine.

Get the Calories Out of Grenadine

Do you love rosy red cocktails? If they call for grenadine, it's a red alert that your diet is about to explode. Grenadine is pomegranate juice and simple syrup. To get the same look and a sweet taste with fewer calories, make your own grenadine. Boil down pomegranate juice and sweeten it with stevia.

Sorry vodka soda lime, meet our new detox-retox drink: Rum, coconut water and mint

We’re so over the skinny bitch.

Aka vodka soda lime, it’s the epitome of dull drinks.

It’s the drink you order if you’ve just said: ‘Oh I’m only staying for one! Got a spin class in the morning!’

And it often doesn’t even taste that good.

At least it doesn’t when it’s made with flat soda and a rock-hard lime quarter, or worse, cordial.

All skinny bitch drinkers dread the words: ‘We don’t have fresh lime, is cordial okay?’

No. No it isn’t. Because my tastebuds don’t believe they are interchangeable.

It’s worth pointing out here that we get it. We really do.

Not only can a well-made skinny bitch be refreshing, it also hydrates you – and with dehydration the cause of some of the worst hangover symptoms, that’s the bit we’re feeling good about the next day.

And if watching your calories from booze is a thing for you, it’s certainly lower in calories than most other (alcoholic) options at the bar.

A double shot of vodka with muddled lime and soda water has around 110 calories – zero in the soda and negligible amounts in the lime.

For comparison, a double shot vodka and Coke comes in at just under 200 calories. Fruit juice mixers contain a similar amount to Coke, but at least come with some nutrition, if a lot of sugar.

A 250ml glass of chardonnay has 220 calories, a pint of beer 180 calories, while with creamy cocktails, the sky’s the limit.

But if you, like us, have had enough of the skinny bitch over the summer, we have a new cocktail for you – especially as the weather calls for something to give the tastebuds more bang for their buck.

It’s called the Coco No Loco, and it will make your detox-retox vibe a whole lot more interesting.

It’s *loads* more fun, but still quite skinny.

And it is a rich source of electrolytes, which are very effective at rehydration (thank you, pre-emptive hangover cure).

Coconut water, the juice inside a young coconut before it matures and turns into the white meat, is also rich in amino acids, potassium, minerals and fatty acids and has less sugar than some fizzy drinks and fruit juices.

The cocktail comes in at 141 calories – more than a vodka soda lime, but less than a large wine or vodka Coke.

And it tastes a whole heap better. We tried it. A lot.

So you can, y’know, feel like you’re being healthy when we all know that deep down, you’re totally not.

Here’s how to make it yourself:

Coco No Loco by Diplomatico Blanco

50ml Diplomatico Blanco (a six-year aged rum that is then filtered clear with charcoal)

    Cocoface coconut water – 150ml/200ml

Add all ingredients into a highball glass over ice

Garnish with a fresh mint sprig and lime wedge

(PS: We have been known to drink a bit of the coconut water out of the coconut then pour our rum in there, Caribbean style. Just saying, you might want to try that).

    Time for some rum-py pumpy

Here’s a couple more rum cocktail recipes – just because…

Nate Brown at Merchant House – The Old Timer’s Club

    Diplomatico Blanco – 60ml

Chamomile & coco butter infused Cocchi Americano – 15ml

Add all ingredients into a mixing glass filled with ice

Stir down and serve straight up in a compete

    Garnish with a cherry

Nathan Merrimen at Ace Hotel – Adventureland

    Diplomatico Reserva – 50ml

Poire Eau De Vie – 5ml

    Peychaud Bitters – 1 dash

Coteaux du Layon Saint-Aubin, Domaine des Forges 2014 dessert wine – 10ml

Add all ingredients into a mixing glass filled with ice, stir down and serve straight up in a coupette

    The Skinny Bitch drink

We live in a society that likes to imbibe alchohol, more so than ever before. After work drinks, business drinks, birthday party drinks, date drinks – it is definitely hard to avoid that alcoholic beverage. You can’t go to a lounge and order a Coca-Cola with lemon (I’ve done that before and was laughed at). So to succumb to our current societal pressures, you are going to have to order at least one alcoholic drink. The trick is to just nurse it. If you can’t just nurse it, at least you are in control of one thing – the calories.

If you are trying to watch those calories and stay the skinny, sexy bitch that you are – your go-to drink is the Skinny Bitch drink.

It’s a colloquial term for a popular drink. What’s in the Skinny Bitch drink? Vodka and club soda. Period. Club soda has zero calories but has the fizz to mimic soda and give your taste buds the notion that you are drinking soda with calories. And it’s not so bad when you add a splash of lime. As a former bartender, it’s quite a popular drink among the models. To keep up with our current society, obsessed with being skinny as can be, companies have come up with low calorie mixers and low calorie beers. Stay away from the 800 calorie margarita because not only are you going to get a beer gut but you will have to run over 6 miles to get rid of that one margarita. Not pleasant, huh?

A vodka soda will only set you back about 70 calories. My favorite drink many, many years ago was Jack Daniels and Coke. That is close to 200 calories! And if you like beer, a Heineken and a Stella each have close to 400 calories!

So if you like to drink alcohol or HAVE to drink alcohol to close that deal, but want the best bang for your calories, go with the Skinny Bitch drink. It didn’t get that name from the modeling industry without good reason. Cheers and happy (low calorie) drinking!

Mix a lighter, 218-calorie, fab Cosmo by trading just a little liquor for club soda. Combine in a cocktail shaker (or ask the bartender for) 1 shot (about 2 ounces) citrus-flavored vodka, 1 splash club soda, 1 splash cranberry juice, and juice of 1 lime wedge; shake well and strain into a chilled martini glass. Yum—and you’ve slashed 100 calories!

    American Virgin

If you’re looking to walk the straight and narrow, try Frankel's American Virgin. Combine 1 shot (about 2 ounces) each peach juice and club soda and 1 splash each orange juice and lemonade in a cocktail shaker full of ice. Stir and strain into a rocks glass filled with ice, then garnish with a lemon wedge for a healthy 34-calorie "mocktail." Yep, you read that right—34 measly calories!

Love this Cuban cocktail, but hate the calories? Some mojitos pack up to 250 empty calories, but Frankel's version contains only 150.

Fill a martini shaker with 1 cup ice. Add 6 lime wedges, 1 1/2 tbsp lime juice, and 2 tbsp torn fresh mint leaves. Muddle lime and mint with a pestle or a long spoon until well-bruised and fragrant.

Next combine 1/2 tsp warmed honey, 2 ounces rum, and 4 ounces club soda; stir gently to dissolve honey. Add to muddled mixture; stir until mixture is well-chilled. Strain into a rocks glass filled with ice; garnish with mint and lime, if desired.

Make yourself a lighter red sangria by ditching the sugar and replacing some of the wine and high-calorie liqueur with sugar-free soda.

Just slice up 4 apples and 3 oranges. Combine fruit with 1 pound red grapes, halved; 3 bottles light- to medium-bodied red wine; 1 can Fresca (or any diet lemon soda); and 1 can club soda. Chill mixture, and serve over ice for 16 servings of scrumptiousness.

Here’s the best part: Each serving has only 173 calories—that’s 125 calories saved.

Frankel's eggnog recipe is only 148 calories, because it’s made with low-fat milk and less liquor.

Beat 2 egg yolks until lightened in color. Add 1/3 cup sugar, beating until dissolved; set aside. Combine 2 cups 1% low-fat milk, 1 tsp vanilla, and 1 dash each cinnamon and nutmeg in a saucepan over high heat; bring to a boil, stirring occasionally.

Remove from heat, and gradually whisk into egg mixture. Return to pot, and cook to 160. Remove from heat, stir in 1/4 cup white rum, and pour into a bowl; set in the refrigerator. Beat 4 pasteurized egg whites in a separate bowl until soft peaks form; with mixer running, gradually add 1 tablespoon sugar, and beat until stiff peaks form. Whisk egg whites into chilled mixture; sprinkle with cinnamon.
