Top 10 Most Popular Cocktails in the World
Many of today’s most popular cocktails are either variations of iconic drinks or based on old-fashioned remedies for sicknesses that we now cure with injections or pills. The recipes might have changed, the liquors have become more refined and yet the enjoyment of a tasty cocktail remains the same.
From the sophisticated Apple Martini to the powerful punch of a Zombie, there are plenty of well-known cocktails available for patrons of any restaurant or bar. The presentation and experience of a fine cocktail defines the moment and even character of the person enjoying the drink. Much like a brand of beer or a label on a fine bottle of wine, ordering a cocktail can say so much more than just a preference in taste.
There will always be the Martini, Screwdriver, Bloody Mary and even the Tom Collins are ordered with a fair amount of consistency at just about any bar. Even the Mimosa and Bellini have become standard additions to any bartender’s list. The following 10 cocktails, however, have become trendy and popular or have managed to maintain their popularity despite great pressure from fine wine and even craft beer.
10 . Apple Martini
An Apple Martini, or “Appletini,” is a trendy cocktail that has gained popularity by adding a big twist to the typical dry martini. Vodka, instead of gin, is the basis of the cocktail and apple schnapps is most often used to add the sweet but slightly sour taste of apple to the trendier version of the cocktail. The Appletini is usually finished with a little lemon juice and garnished with a slice of apple to differentiate it from a normal martini served in the same glass.
The Appletini is a favorite drink of late night host Conan O’Brien and has been featured in several movies and sitcoms. In 2007, an Appletini was a focal point in a Disney movie, Enchanted, where a version of the cocktail made with poisoned apples was presented to the character Giselle in an attempt to harm her.
9 . Long Island Iced Tea
Packing quite a punch, the Long Island Iced Tea is one cocktail that never seems to go out of style, especially with men. The potent concoction of rum, vodka, tequila, gin and triple sec is often finished with a mixture of sweet and sour, lemon juice and cola. Traditionally, there is no tea added to the mixture but the ingredients, especially the taste from the cola, provide the flavor profile of a tea with much more flavor and attitude.
The origin of the drink is debatable, but one thing that is known is that it appears to come from the community of Long Island. In 1920, a version was said to be created in the Long Island community of Kingsport, Tennessee, while the modern version was said to be invented in a contest in a bar on Long Island, New York in 1972. Much of the confusion surrounding its origin probably stems from the fact that many variations of the drink exist, including substitutions for tequila, cola and even sweet and sour mix.
8 . Californication
A California twist on the Long Island Iced Tea, the Californication is a golden state version of the popular Long Island concoction. The Californication is mixture of run, vodka, tequila and gin finished with orange liqueur, lemon juice and orange juice to taste. Strong and yet sweet. The cocktail is finished with either a slice of orange or a twisted peel of orange rind.
The Californication is not a subtle cocktail, but the citrus flavor imparted by the orange liqueur and orange juice attempt to disguise the punch it packs from the mixture of spirits. The name of the cocktail, Californication, is based on a term that is prominent in the lyrics of a song by the rock group, the Red Hot Chili Peppers. There has also been a television series that has run since August 2007 with the same name.
7 . Pina Colada
The classic tropical cocktail with a distinctive look and taste would have to be the Pina Colada. The simple yet exquisite mixture of rum, coconut milk and pineapple juice has been a favorite in the tropics and with the less experienced cocktail drinkers looking for a sweet cocktail that drinks more like a smoothie than an alcoholic beverage. The drink has become a popular drink to enjoy poolside or anywhere offering a glimpse of the ocean or the feel of sand between the toes.
The Pina Colada has roots that can be traced to Puerto Rico and has long been considered the island Country’s national drink. The cocktail was said to be invented by a bartender at the luxurious Caribe Hilton Hotel’s Beachcomber Bar in 1952 shortly after a key ingredient, Coco Lopez cream of coconut, was developed. Puerto Rico honors the cocktail with a National Pina Colada Day that is celebrated each year on July 10th.
6 . Margarita
The margarita is easily the most popular cocktail in the United States made with tequila. The simple mixture of tequila, triple sec and lime juice is often blended with ice but is traditionally served on the rocks. In either instance, the beverage is commonly presented in a salt rimmed glass. Since the basic lime margarita was invented, many other fruity variations of the cocktail have been created that are mostly found in its blended form.
The origin of the margarita dates back to the late 1930’s or early 1940’s and while the exact location of the origin of the drink has been a subject of great debate, the region of Baja California, Mexico somewhere between Tijuana and Ensenada is more than likely the birthplace of the drink. The refreshing cocktail continues to be popular in the sunny and somewhat arid regions of Mexico and San Diego, California as well.
5 . Caipirinha
The World Cup is about to introduce the world to the fun-loving country of Brazil and one drink that Brazilians are always delighted to share with others is the slightly intimidating Caipirinha. The national drink of Brazil is made with cachaca (spirit from sugar cane) or white rum, brown sugar and lime juice. Some formulations of cachaca can be over 100 proof and like magic, Caipirinha manages to hide almost all of the alcohol taste.
Caipirinha, has its origin that goes back to 1918 and is based on a remedy that was commonly used to treat Spanish flu. The word “Caipira” refers to a person from the countryside of Brazil who is far from modern or sophisticated in his or her ways. The drink is served from households to restaurants and bars in Brazil and has only recently started to gain popularity outside of Brazil. The inability to find good brands of cachaca in North America and Europe has been the only limiting factor to its growth in popularity.
4 . Mint Julep
The official drink of the Kentucky Derby, the Mint Julep, is a symbolic cocktail of the American South. The concoction of Bourbon, a little bit of water, powdered and granulated sugar and plenty of mint has long been a very popular way to drink a cocktail made with Bourbon in the region that produces most of the Bourbon in the United States. Simple and yet refined, the cocktail has gained acclaim elsewhere thanks in large part to its association with the crown jewel of horse racing, the Kentucky Derby.
The origins of the Mint Julep go back as far as the late 18th century. Evidence suggests that it was an established drink by the early 1800’s with gin, brandy and whiskey all used to create different variations of the drink. The current version with Bourbon has been promoted by Churchill Downs to Kentucky Derby fans since 1938. Currently, about 120,000 mint juleps are consumed each year at Churchill Downs during the two days of horse racing over the weekend that includes the Kentucky Derby and Kentucky Oaks.
3 . Mai Tai
The Mai Tai is a Polynesian-style cocktail that has a fruity tropical taste indigenous to the Western Region of the United States. The mixture of light and dark rum, orange curacao, orgeat syrup and lime juice has been a symbol of Tiki or Tahitian culture ever since it was first created. The cocktail was very popular in the 50’s and 60’s and was even featured in Blue Hawaii, a film staring Elvis Presley.
The cocktail has over 10 documented recipes and was said to have been invented by the proprietor of Trader Vic’s of Oakland, California in 1944. He created the drink for some friends who were visiting from Tahiti and after one of them exclaimed that the drink was “Maita’i”, or very good in Tahitian, the name stuck. A rival restaurant, Don the Beachcomber, also claims to have invented the cocktail in 1933 with a more complex version of the drink. The truth probably lies somewhere in between, but California was more than likely the birthplace of the popular cocktail.
The Mojito has become very popular as its fresh minty taste complements warm summer weather much like a cool glass of non-alcoholic lemonade. The mixture of white rum, mint, lime juice, sugar and soda water is crisp and clean with a relatively low alcohol content. Sprite or 7-up can often be used in place of the soda water and a good portion of the sugar. One of the keys to preparing a proper Mojito is to crush, not cut or dice, the mint leaves in order to unlock more of the oils of the mint, thus enhancing the minty flavor.
The origins of the minty mixture with rum go back as far as 1586 when the men aboard Sir Francis Drake’s armada reached out to local Indians in search of a cure for scurvy and dysentery. Drake’s small boarding party returned from the shores of Cuba with the primary ingredients for the modern day Mojito. Several other stories exist regarding the cocktail’s true origins, but most stories simply provide evidence to how long the general recipe has been in existence. The great author, Ernest Hemingway, was known to have developed quite a taste for the refreshing drink.
1 . Cosmopolitan
The Cosmopolitan is an ultra modern drink that has surged in popularity during the last 20-30 years. The tangy concoction of vodka, triple sec, lime juice and cranberry juice has managed to leapfrog the venerable screwdriver as many vodka drinkers prefer the Cosmopolitan’s cleaner and slightly tart taste. The keys to the preparation of a Cosmopolitan are a good brand of cranberry juice and Cointreau Triple Sec, two essential elements to the drink.
The origin of the drink is unclear, but the modern version presented in a sophisticated martini glass is said to be invented in 1985 by a bartender of the Strand restaurant in South Beach, Florida. Other stories place its origin coming from a bar in Minneapolis around 1975. In either case, the cocktail has created quite a following with females and seems to have the perfect name to match its sophisticated taste and traditional martini-like presentation. The shortened name of “Cosmo” and the drink itself exploded in popularity during the 1990’s with frequent mentions on the hit television series, Sex and the City.
14 Cocktail Experts Predict the Next "It" Drink
AKA your weekend to-do list.
Cocktails, like fashion, tend to run on a cycle. What's popular one decade becomes outdated the next—only to reemerge years later with a new twist. (That very trendy gimlet you've been ordering used to be seen as an old lady's drink.) So we wanted to know: What's going to be the It cocktail next?
We talked to the crème de la crème of bartenders, mixologists, and beverage experts to get the scoop. The consensus? Old-fashioned cocktails are still having their heydey, with low-alcohol spritzes and tiki drinks making a big comeback. And when in doubt? Order a good daquiri.
Here, a guide to the emerging cocktail scene—you can consider this your boozy version of runway trends. (But honestly, much more useful, right?)
1. Low-Alcohol Cocktails and Spritzes
"Low-alcohol cocktails are gaining popularity as they focus on flavor over potency," says Pamela Wiznitzer, USBG NY President and Creative Director at Seamstress, NYC. "The 50/50 Manhattan is delicious, and definitely a version of the classic you can expect to see more of. I use Maker's Mark Bourbon, which is sweet and balanced from the use of red winter wheat. Pair it with sweet vermouth in a 50/50 proportion."
Wiznitzer recommends: The 50/50 Manhattan
1 ½ parts Marker's Mark
1 ½ parts sweet vermouth
2-3 dashes bitters
Natural Maraschino cherry for garnish
To make: In a mixing glass, combine all ingredients over ice and stir. Strain into a chilled coupe glass and garnish with a cherry.
"I loving the farm to glass movement and low-alcohol cocktails that coming onto the scene," says Stephen Warner, Head Bartender at Lo Spiedo. "Fresh and refreshing, you can enjoy a few without worrying about a hang-over the next day. Something I enjoy is a garden spritz of fresh cucumber juice, cantaloupe juice, Art in the Age Sage Liquor and a splash of sparkling white wine."
Warner recommends: Stephen's Spritz
1.5 oz each cucumber and cantaloupe juice
1 oz Art in the Age Sage Liquor
Splash of sparkling white wine
To make: Pour liquor and juices on ice and top with a splash of sparkling white wine.
"I'm noticing more and more people ordering Bitter ingredients," says Natasha David, Bartender at Nitecap. "I think people are growing tired of overly sweet cocktails, and crave something savory. A lot of it comes from the changes in our food culture. Look at what kind of lettuces are now just common place—arugula, radicchio—all bitter. I also think drinking culture in general is taking a little shift—you have much more people starting the night off with something light, like an Aperol Spritz or Campari Soda and then on the opposite end of that, people are coming in after dinner ordering Negronis or Amaros neat."
David recommends: Aperol Spritz
3 parts Prosecco
1 part soda water
Slice of orange
To make: Pour all three over ice, garnish with orange.
"I believe the next big drink people will be ordering is the Americano," says Brahm Callahan, Beverage Director for Himmel Hospitality Group: Grill 23 & Bar, Post 390, & Harvest. "It is essentially the Negroni, without the gin. It is a nice appertivo drink, to start any meal. Additionally, it has alow alcohol contentallowing for the diner to have multiple Americanos before feeling the effect. This drink is also a favorite of mine because it is a stimulant for the digestive system. I see people ordering this drink frequently in the future!"
Callahan recommends: The Americano
1 oz Sweet Vermouth
Splash of Soda Water
To make: Pour the Campari and vermouth over ice, add a splash of soda.
2. Tiki Drinks and Daquiris
"I would have to say a Jungle Bird cocktail would be my 'it' cocktail right now," says Bill Brooks, beverage director at Resto and the Cannibal. "It definitely hits that tiki theme that everyone is riding. With the Campari, you also get the cross over from everyone doing frozen negronis all summer long."
Brooks recommends: The Jungle Bird
1.5 oz black strap rum
.5 oz simple syrup
1.5 oz pineapple juice
To make: Combine all the ingredients and shake, serve over crushed ice in an Old Fashioned glass. Garnish with a thick slice of pineapple.
"I believe the next big cocktail people will be ordering is an authentic tiki cocktail," says Kim Haasarud, brand mixologist for Omni Hotels & Resorts. "The tiki drink trend is exploding, as we see more homemade syrups being used in these cocktails as opposed to artificial syrups. An example of a popular Tiki cocktail is the Eastern Sour."
Haasarud recommends: Eastern Sour
1 ½ ounce Bourbon
1 ½ ounce Orange Juice
½ ounce Simple Syrup
1 ounce Lime Juice
To make: Shaken all ingredients and strain into glass, and top with bitters. Garnish with orange slice.
"One of my fellow bartenders calls this summer The Summer of the Daquiri and I think he's right," says Michael Longshore, head bartender at Vaucluse and Altamarea Group. "Daiquiris are riding the coat tails of the tiki movement, but their appeal is (possibly) further ranging because of their simplicity. They're the plain cheese slice of drinks—it's really hard to have a bad one, and a great one is sublime. They're easy to make, easy to drink, and most bars have the top shelf (dark rums, aged rums, maraschino for a Hemingway) to make things interesting for the connoisseur."
Longshore recommends: The Daquiri
1/2 oz sugar syrup
1 oz fresh lime juice
Can be made tall or short, double-strained, blended, or served over crushed ice.
"The industry darling right now is the daiquiri," says Anne-Louise Marquis, brand ambassador for Grand Marnier. "Not the frozen kind you get on Bourbon street in a grenade—but the proper one- balanced just right. There are lots of variations."
1.5 oz white rum
.5 oz Grand Marnier Raspberry Peach
1 oz lime juice
.5 oz simple syrup
Shake and strain. Serve up.
3. Old-School Cocktails
"A big trend right now is a drink called a Boulevardier," says Keith Nelson, Beverage Director for Tao Downtown, Tao Uptown, Arlington Club, Lavo Italian Restaurant. "This is a modern twist on what is usually a stuffy bitter drink for older people. Brown spirits are huge right now, and the variations are endless for this cocktail. There are also more high quality vermouths in the market right now than ever. A great one that I use frequently is Carpano Antica."
Nelson recommends: The Boulevardier
1 part Vermouth
To make: Stir together.
"Classic cocktails reinvented have become increasingly popular," says Sarah Landry, Beverage Manager at The Florentine. "I see the Tom Collins making a much deserved come back. Right now at the Florentine for fall, we are doing our take on the Tom Collins–the Trip Home, using Hendricks Gin and a house made rosemary and clove simple syrup."
Landry recommends: The Trip Home
2 oz. Hendricks Gin
1 oz. Rosemary & Clove Simple Syrup
Soda to top it off
To make: Combine gin, rosemary & clove simple syrup, and lemon; shake and strain over ice in Collins glass; top with soda. Garnish with a lemon peel with cloves, if desired.
"I think reinvented classic cocktails with long forgotten spirits are going to be big–my favorite being the Vieux Carré," says Cody Goldstein, Head Bartender at Upholstery Store: Food and Wine. "The cocktail typically uses a mix of rye and cognac but I love the use of an extra añejo tequila here. Specifically, I'm using QUI Tequila, which is the first platinum extra añejo, which results in a brighter cocktail – both in color and flavor. While it's hard to predict the future, I'm definitely seeing the use of 'old-school' spirits in cocktails already and they're only becoming more popular. Reaching into your liquor cabinet and using things like Jägermeister, Benedictine, and Limoncello is a good place to start…or try the classic or reinvented version of the Vieux Carré."
Goldstein recommends: The Vieux Carré
¾ part QUI Tequila
¾ part sweet vermouth
1 dash Peychaud Bitters
1 dash angostura bitters
Lemon twist, to garnish
To make: Chill a coup glass in the fridge. Combine all ingredients into a mixing glass and fill with ice. Stir for 10 seconds and strain into the coup glass. Zest lemon over the glass, rinse the rim with peel and drop in cocktail.
"The old fashioned has made a huge come back in recent years and like the Negroni, a lot of bartenders are starting to play with variations. barrel aged, smoked, etc.," says Vincent Mauriello, Gerber Group's Managing Partner and Beverage Program Coordinator for NYC's The Roof, Whiskey Blue, Whiskey Park, Irvington, and Mr. Purple. "Since añejo tequila has very similar characteristics to bourbon, a tequila-based variation works very well. There also happens to be some great anejo tequilas coming out these days. We will be featuring this cocktail at our bars this fall."
Mauriello recommends: The Tequila Old Fashioned, AKA the New Fashioned
2 oz Casamigos Anejo Tequila
1 teaspoon Demerara syrup
2 dashes of angostura bitters
2 dashes of regans Orange bitters
To make: Stir and strain over 1 large cube of ice. Garnish with a lemon and orange peel.
"Out with the sweet, in with the spicy. Adult beverages should not taste like candy, which is why this new twist on the Moscow Mule will have all the grown-ups talking," says Jason Kupuski, Head Mixologist for Queen of the Night. "The unique mix of Fernet and Ginger Beer will enhance any meal and stimulate your taste buds, making each sip better than the last."
Kupuski recommends: The Queen's Cure
1 oz Fernet Branca
¼ oz Cinnamon infused Simple Syrup
2 oz of Ginger Beer
To make: Rinse your highball glass with absinthe and leave the remainder of the liquor in the glass. Fill your shaker half way with ice. Add the Fernet Branca, Lime Juice and Cinnamon infused Simple Syrup to the shaker and shake till you have a even consistency. Add two ounces of ginger beer and lightly stir cocktail. Garnish with a lime.
Note: Fernet is an Amaro — Italian for "bitter"— and resides in the same family as Averna and Campari. The molasses-hued liquid's secret blend of approximately 40 herbs, spices and fungi like saffron.
"Cachaca helped bring attention to Latin American spirits other than Tequila, specifically Pisco. Pisco isn't new, but with everyone loving to revive old school cocktails, the Pisco Sourcould make a big comeback," says Kyle Kensrue, Certified Cicerone and General Manager at Randolph Beer.
Kensrue recommends: Pisco Sour
3/4 oz Simple syrup
3/4 oz Lemon Juice
To make: Vigorously shake and strain contents in a cocktail shaker with ice cubes, then pour into glass and garnish with angostura bitters and cinnamon.

The 10 Most Popular Drinks to Order at a Bar
So you can at least sound like you know what you're doing
Unless you're still in college, you should probably have moved on by now from ordering rum and cokes or vodka sodas in a bar (unless you just really really like them). After all, you're a grown-up, and you should be drinking grown-up drinks. Especially if you want that busy bartender to take you seriously. Here are 10 popular bar drinks that are as tasty as they are sophisticated. And aren't so complicated that the bartender will never pay attention to you agin.
A classic martini technically should be made with gin, although if your prefer vodka that's no sin either. Order it up and stirred, not shaken (sorry 007). And just as with sex, baseball uniforms, and old Jeeps, dirty is always a solid choice.
3 oz. gin or vodka
1/2 oz. dry vermouth
Garnish with an olive
The workhorse of summer, there's nothing better than a classic margarita when the temperature skyrockets. The best are made with just lime juice, tequila, and a splash of Cointreau or Grand Marnier, but if you like them a little sweeter, ask your bartender to add agave syrup.
2 oz. silver tequila
1 oz. lime juice
Course salt for the rim
In terms of all time classic whiskey cocktails, there are none better than the Manhattan. Just three simple ingredients— bourbon (or rye), sweet vermouth, and bitters—and you're good to go. And while a quality whiskey is always a good choice, the key to a great Manhattan is the sweet vermouth. So always ask for Carpano Antica. Trust us, it will make all the difference.
2 oz. bourbon or rye
1 oz. Carpano Antica sweet vermouth
2 dashes Angostura bitters
They've become quite popular over the last few years, and for good reason. It's a cocktail that is crisp and refreshing, and good for any season. Plus it (usually) comes in a cool copper mug.
2 oz. vodka (or bourbon for a Kentucky mule)
4 to 6 oz. ginger beer
1/2 oz. lime juice
If you're going to order a scotch, especially a good scotch, you should order it neat. Although, sometimes it is good to ask the bartender to add just a couple of drops of water so that it can breathe.
The best scotch you can afford
Like good tailoring, punk rock music, and vintage motorcycles, the gin and tonic is one of those things would should definitely thank the British for.
Like the Manhattan, another classic whiskey cocktail. This one, however, is for the guy who likes his drinks on the sweeter side.
2 oz. bourbon or rye whisky
2 dashes Angostura bitters
Garnish with an orange twist
Popular since the Sumerians invented it 3,900 years ago. You just can't go wrong when ordering a cold one.
Maybe an orange wedge (if you order a wheat of course)
Maybe not the best choice in your dive-ier bars, but if you aren't in the mood for a cocktail and you want to keep things sophisticated, wine is your move.
Good conversation (vino veritas after all)
If scotch is a bit too malty or peaty for you, bourbon might be your move. This one you can confidently order neat or on the rocks.
World's top 100 cocktails
Words by: Simon Difford
As in previous years, the following ‘Top 100 Cocktails from 2016’ are based on a combination of the number of visits to individual cocktail pages on this website, frequency of appearance on cocktail menus in bars in Europe, North America and Asia, and search engine stats.
From nearly 4,000 cocktails on Difford's Guide, the Porn Star Martini continues to reign while the previously dominant Mojito has declined for a second year. All manner of ginger beer-charged Mules continue to do well, as do gin based cocktails. It is also good to see so many Scotch whisky cocktails in the top 100.
We've not included any in the top 100 but non-alcoholic cocktails are also on trend.
1. Porn Star Martini - the most visited cocktail on Difford's Guide for a second year. Proof that either sex sells or folk like vanilla flavoured vodka and passion fruit.
2. Amaretto Sour - the 2nd most visited cocktail on Difford's Guide during 2016 and one of the best-selling cocktails of 2016. We recommend Morgenthaler Formula
3. Margaritas and Tommy's Margaritas - continue to drive tequila sales. Tommy's Margarita receives more hits than the classic Margaritas (straight-up, on-the-rocks and frozen) on Difford's Guide.
4. Bramble - gin's popularity across Europe helps push this contemporary classic by the legendary Dick Bradsell.
5. Espresso Martini - the second drink from Dick Bradsell in the top 10. Not actually a 'Martini' at all but this stimulating cocktail is fabulous all the same (yes I know it should be called a 'Vodka Espresso' but consumers love the word 'Martini').
6. Moscow Mule - we noticed a huge resurgence for this drink during 2015 and it has continued to climb, as has every flavoursome derivation of Mule. The Mexican Mule (see below) was actually the 5th most visited cocktail on Difford's Guide during 2016 while the classic Moscow Mule only made it to 47th place.
7. Old-Fashioned - we've also taken the Maple Old-Fashioned and Benton's Old-Fashioned serves into account to bring the Old-Fashioned into the top ten for another year.
8. Negroni - It is now more than just bartenders who enjoy this easy to make bitter-sweet drink - we think now more than the Aperol Spritz below which seems to be declining.
9. White Lady - this vintage classic continues to rise up this chart, perhaps helped by the popularity of gin.
10. Manhattan - We've combined Dry, Perfect and Sweet serves to bring the Manhattan in at No. 10, but the Sweet Manhattan is by far the most popular on Difford's Guide (the 17th most visited cocktail during 2016).
11. Dry Martini - the various styles of Martini such as Vodkatini and Vesper combine to push the Dry Martini near the top of our chart. The Vesper leads the Martini pack on Difford's Guide at 29th of all cocktails during 2016.
12. Daiquiri - the Hemingway Special helps drive the combined Daiquiri category and this is presently the most popular style of Daiquiri on Difford's Guide at 14th most viewed cocktail during 2016.
13. Mai Tai - commonplace on bar menus around the world, helped by the Tiki revival. (Trader Vic's recipe is by far the most popular on Difford's Guide and the 16th most viewed cocktail during 2016.)
14. Aviation - this gin classic was the 22nd most viewed cocktail on Difford's Guide during 2016, up two places from 2015 but it was 15th in 2014.
15 . Penicillin - this whisky-based cocktail was the eighth most viewed on Difford's Guide during 2016 and we saw it in many more bars. This is a cocktail to watch.
16. Spritz - we've grouped Aperol Spritz and Spritz al Bitter together but while Aperol previously led, the drier Campari 'Spritz Al Bitter' now receives more than twice as much traffic on Difford's Guide.
17. French Martini - not actually a Martini and perhaps driven by sales of Chambord liqueur, this fruity drink has wide appeal. Try a Very French Martini with cognac.
18. White Russian - popular since its 1998 cameo appearance in The Big Lebowski this drink appears to be enjoying a resurgence.
19. Dirty Banana - helped by a One Direction blog referring to Harry Styles, this continues to be one of the most visited cocktails on Difford's Guide.
20. Mexican Mule - Summer 2016 saw the Moscow Mule climb in popularity and with it variations such as this tequila based mule.
21. Sazerac - Louisiana's official state cocktail is now also being enjoyed elsewhere in the world.
22. Cantaritos - the 13th most viewed cocktail on Difford's Guide during 2016 is spreading its influence from a strong Mexican base.
23. Martinez - of the many recipes with genever the Martinez is by far the most popular on Difford's Guide
24. Screaming Orgasm - the Porn Star Martini isn't the only lewd named cocktail that proved popular during 2016. Screaming Orgasm was our 15th most viewed cocktail.
25. Mojito - the Mojito has dramatically fallen out of favour and during 2016 it was the 76th most viewed cocktail on Difford's Guide. Flavoured variations remain popular and interestingly a non-alcoholic Apple Mojito was our 59th most viewed cocktail. Non- and low-alcohol cocktails are seeing dramatic rises. That said the classic Mojito remains a much requested bar drink. However perhaps opt for a Royal Mojito with champagne rather that soda - this was our 149th most visited cocktail (out of nearly 4,000 recipes).
26. Vieux Carré - another cocktail from New Orleans. Surely bartender driven.
27. Gin Fizz and Ramos Gin Fizz - shaker boys at the ready, the Ramos was the 19th most viewed cocktail on Difford's Guide during 2016, up from 29th in 2015.
28. Whisky Mac - it's great to see this old Scotch whisky based cocktail doing so well. Our 20th most viewed cocktail during 2016.
29. Pickle Back - one of the most popular shots of 2013, left the top 50 during 2015 but came back in 2016 to be our 21st most viewed drink.
38. Caipirinha - the 2016 Olympics helped drive this cocktail.
40. Breakfast Martini - this drink has inspired many other marmalade/jam cocktails.
42. Slow Comfortable Screw Against The Wall - While bars strive to write highfalutin menus with sophisticated drinks made using house-made ingredients, it would appear many consumers are looking for something a lot more basic. This was the 15th most visited cocktail on Difford's Guide during 2016.
43. Jack's Godfather - Jack Daniel's is one of the world's best-selling spirits brands, people love the almondy taste of amaretto, and they like cola. This drink has all three, a combo that helped make it the 17th most viewed cocktail on Difford's Guide during 2016.
47. Bloody Mary - An incredibly popular cocktail in North America and the UK, and even on aeroplanes making the transatlantic crossing between the two. However, it is less popular elsewhere and languished at 146th place on Difford's Guide during 2016.
48. Irish Coffee - perhaps due to the popularity of Irish whiskey we noticed a jump in this warming drink's popularity.
49. Snowball - such was the popularity of this drink over Christmas 2016 that we felt it deserved a place in the top 50. The first recipe we link to was the 23rd most viewed cocktail on Difford's Guide but predictably I much prefer my own Snowball recipe.
50. Collins - flavoured variations led by the Elderflower Collins are propelling the popularity of this tall refreshing cocktail
51. Alaska - we have two recipes for Alaska on Difford's Guide but the Savoy Recipe is the most popular
54. Cosmopolitan - Still lingering on but now out the top 50.
59. French 75 - we've also noticed the elderflower based French 77 doing well (it's our 175th most viewed cocktail).
60. Mint Julep - a great drink served in a fancy tin. Given the rise of American whiskies this will surely continue to grow in popularity.
61. The Alexander - leads numerous creamy variations with the Brandy Alexander - and the vodka-based Alexander the Great also heavily hit on Difford's Guide.
62. Russian Spring Punch - yet another Dick Bradsell cocktail in the top 100.
64. Bellini - given the present popularity of Prosecco we'd have expected better of the Bellini
70. Singapore Sling - we've included stats for the Gin Sling in our placing of the Singapore Sling.
79. Ace - who'd have guessed this pink gin drink was so popular?
100. Corpse Reviver - of the various recipes it is the No.2 (Savoy Recipe) that is by far most popular on Difford's Guide
