50 Red and Pink Cocktail Recipes for Valentine's Day

What's more romantic than mixing your sweetheart a cocktail on Valentine's Day?

What's more romantic than mixing your sweetheart an elegant cocktail on Valentine's Day? To turn up the saccharine sentimentality to 11, try a holiday-colored drink. We've collected 50 great red and pink cocktails to woo your partner on Valentine's Day.

Nothing says romance like champagne. Our Sicilian 75 is a riff on the French 75 made with blood orange juice, gin, and campari. Or try the Volstead, with vodka, St. Germain, and fresh berries. For something sweet-tart, the Rhubarb Fizz pairs champagne with a ginger-rhubarb syrup.

Hopefully your relationship isn't bitter, but your drink can be. The negroni is a classic, with equal parts gin, campari, and sweet vermouth creating a bitter, refreshing sipper. Replacing the vermouth with light, citrusy Lillet Blanc gives you our floral pink negroni.

Tart cranberries make a great Valentine's Day drink. Our Cranberry Crush combines spiced rum, cranberry juice, and ginger beer into a complex cocktail. For something a little sweeter, agave syrup makes for a perfectly balanced cranberry gimlet.

Moving to other fruit, our Plum-Basil Gin Fizz is sweet and refreshing. Back to berries, you can make a rich shrub with blackberries, dark rum, and balsamic vinegar or an effervescent Tom Collins variation with raspberries, gin, and soda water.

Check out these recipes and more in our collection of 50 red and pink Valentine's Day cocktail recipes.

A jalapeño-infused, blood-colored tequila and beet cocktail, the Moradita (“Little Death”), is a fresh, nearly healthy-tasting drink with some real body and a balancing hint of elegant richness.

The prickly pear cactus thrives in the deserts of the American Southwest; its bulbous red fruit is prized for many Mexican and Tex-Mex preparations. This legendary margarita, which takes its distinctive flavor from the fruit, comes from bartender Ruben Bernal at Las Canarias restaurant in San Antonio, Texas.

Campari ice cubes morph this drink from a Manhattan into a Boulevardier as they slowly melt.

This version of a Spanish sangria is ripe with summer fruit; its light, crisp flavors complement seafood and poultry.

This fruity beer-based cocktail is an ideal outdoor sipper—mix the pomegranate lemonade ahead of time and bring a six-pack to top each glass individually.

This sweet-tart wine punch was invented by members of the Junior League of Houston book club in the 1970s.

A mix of Campari, Pimm's No. 1, and ginger beer, this drink makes an excellent warm weather apéritif.

This bubbly cocktail makes the most of rhubarb season. Get the recipe for Rhubarb Fizz »

This pucker-inducing cranberry twist on a Cosmopolitan delivers striking color and the perfect balance of sweet and tart.

The floral flavor of gin is a natural match for bright grapefruit and elderflower liqueur in a refreshing cocktail. Fresh tarragon adds an aromatic, peppery anise note.

Lillet Rouge, a vibrant fortified wine, gives a warming boost to the classic Tom Collins.

Tequila and cardamom is an unexpected combination, but it works beautifully with the help of lime and grapefruit juice.

Surviving recipes for this once-forgotten cocktail call for a curious ingredient called "red Hembarig." We have it on good authority that a raspberry shrub works well to replace this mystery ingredient.

This classic cocktail couldn't be simpler—it's simply even parts gin, Campari, and sweet vermouth.

Muddled strawberries and mint star in this refreshing, lightly sweet cocktail that packs a punch. Get the recipe for Strawberry-Lillet Crush »

This refreshing frozen drink from Williamsburg, Brooklyn's Baby's All Right gets its baby pink color and pleasant bitterness from a combination of Campari and fresh grapefruit juice, while a pinch of finely ground yerba maté adds subtle herbal flavor and a gentle caffeine kick—the perfect fuel for a night of revelry.

Use an aged cachaça like Avuà Amburana to add warm depth to this fruity drink. Get the recipe for Strawberry Cachaça Shake »

Sparkling rose adds berry notes to this take on a French 75. Replacing the gin traditionally used, Calvados imbues a richer, woodsy, and slightly sweeter flavor.

Light, orangey Lillet Blanc and fresh lemon juice brighten a springlike twist on the Negroni. Tarragon and tart, hibiscus-based Burlesque Bitters from Bittermens add floral, herbaceous notes.

Campari and blood orange juice give this twist on the French 75 a beautiful color.

Jalapeño and chile-infused bitters add a spicy kick to a fruity cocktail made with muddled strawberries and blueberries.

This gorgeously floral and spicy drink is built like a classic New York sour, with a float of red wine on top and aquavit in place of whiskey.

This jelly shot is a mix of fresh raspberries and mint with just a touch of bourbon.

Fresh berries shaken with ice, vodka, lemon, and St. Germain, strained into a champagne flute and topped with Champagne, created a drink that fizzes dramatically. Get the recipe for The Volstead »

This refreshing aperitif is a mixture of Aperol, dry vermouth, and triple sec.

The best and most surprising part of this tall, refreshing drink is the taste of rose on the finish. It comes not from any floral ingredient but from the gin—Nolet's Silver, a brand with a pronounced rosy finish.

Deep and sweet, this cocktail is an ideal vehicle for summer's juicy red plums.

Fresh-brewed iced tea gets a boost from gin and fresh fruit in this not-too-sweet cocktail.

This fresh, bright cocktail marries beet juice with bourbon and Esprit de June, a floral liqueur distilled from grape blossoms that's available at most high-end liquor stores.

This riff on a cherry cola uses cola ice cubes to keep the flavor robust.

This anise-perfumed cocktail is a New Orleans classic.

The rich, velvety color of this cocktail is reminiscent of fall foliage, while its warming base of brandy and maple wards off autumn's chill.

Spiced rum and fiery ginger beer combine with tart cranberry juice in this flavorful cool-weather cocktail.

Made with bold, American Cabernet in lieu of the traditional South American brandy, this complex and tantalizing cocktail is Napa Valley's take on the Pisco Sour.

This richly flavored pomegranate margarita is just as good sipped on a cold day in front of a roaring fire as it is on a balmy afternoon spent on a tropical beach.

Just a few ingredients add up to a complex whole in this Gilded Age cocktail, an ideal vehicle for a rich VSOP cognac.

This richly-hued beer-based cocktail, built on Sam Adams's yeasty, fruity, fizzy Infinium brew, has a slow burn thanks to a rich black pepper syrup.

A classic version of a Mexican cerveza preparada (prepared beer), the chavela couldn't be simpler: tomato juice, hot sauce, beer, lemon, and ice, with a salted rim.

Found all over Italy, the spritz is a classically Venetian cocktail of prosecco mixed with a bitter aperitif and soda water.

This cocktail brightens up smoky scotch with vanilla cognac liqueur and hibiscus and strawberry syrups.

This Spanish drink is a simple mixture of cola and red wine.

Shrub, the sweet-tart syrup favored by colonial Americans, is simply made by macerating fruit in sugar until the fruit exudes its juice, straining, then adding vinegar. Mixed with rum and soda it makes a bracing drink ideal for summer afternoons.

This potent Prohibition-era cocktail boasts an especially strong yet beachy combination of rum, whiskey, brandy, grenadine, and lemon juice.

A popular cocktail in 1920s Paris, this delicate concoction gets its soft pink color from the addition of raspberry syrup and its floral notes from vermouth and kirsch, a dry cherry brandy.

A luscious take on the bellini, the Rossini swaps strawberries in for white peaches and prosecco in for champagne.

Developed by Dushan Zaric of NYC watering hole Employees Only and featuring absinthe, high-proof bourbon, and house-made pomegranate grenadine, the Billionaire is as rich as its name suggests.

This throat-warming punch is a sophisticated take on the old-timey cold-season cure of tea dosed with Rock and Rye cordial.

This sweet and tangy cranberry–beer–bourbon punch, delicately spiced with cinnamon-infused simple syrup, is perfect for a festive gathering.

This drink is one of our favorites to make with Rittenhouse rye whiskey.

Sweet and tangy, with the mild smokiness of pink peppercorns and the salty edge of black cured olives, this elaboration of a vodka martini is as grand and glamorous as the wide avenues of Paris.

I have put together many breast cancer fundraising events and we always have the Pink Martini as our specialty drink and it sells like hot cakes.

Our recipe is super simple. NutriSoda and Shakers Vodka were our sponsors so we mixed several pink NutriSodas with Vodka and it made a very lovely pink drink!

I love the pink drinks and will most likely be using at least one of these receipes for our “think pink themed” wedding next year.

I made the pink russian last night and my mom said it can be called the blushing bride b/c after drinking half she was flushed. It is absolutely delicious (and deceptively strong).

They all look good to me! First pour will have to be the CHAMBORD PINK-TINI – I love Chambord. I like to add a splash to champagne for a bit of color and taste.

Ladies, Any ideas on pink appetizers besides crab dip and shrimp? Game ideas? Girls night in for Breast Awareness Pink Party.

Yum. Looks refrshing.. thanks for the recipes.

My Breast Cancer Awareness Pink Party was a success. For drinks I made a punch and purchased blushed color wines. For decorations I purchased .99 cent impatience and cover the plastic pots with solid pink and polk a dot tissue paper. Cut the paper on the top to make it look like ribbons and it looked super. I also purchased 4 huge tissue paper flowers for $2 that looked amazing. I will post a pic soon. Thanks ladies for all your ideas. Purchased everything at Walmart and dollar stores.

P.S. Used pink pipe cleaner idea to decorated the botton of wine glasses. Used flowers in my yard inside cylinder vases as centerpieces. No one had a clue they were from my garden. They looked beautiful and were free. I purchased pink glow lights for $1 per pack at Wal-mart and made a pink bracelet and a necklace per guest. It was cool how they shined in the night. We played Who am I? and it was great fun.

Pink Gin: A Classic Cocktail For Gin Lovers

    • 3 mins
    • Prep: 3 mins,
    • Cook: 0 mins
    • Yield: 1 serving

Pink Gin is also known as Gin & Bitters and it is, quite simply, those two ingredients: gin and bitters. This classic cocktail was originally created by the Royal Navy to make Angostura bitters - which they used as a medicinal treatment for their sailors - more palatable (the lure of gin may have added to its appeal).

The 'pink' in the Pink Gin comes from the slight pink hue the bitters give the gin.

You may also hear the term "Gin Pahit" in many 19th-century sailing stories like those by W. Somerset Maugham. This is the virtually the same drink, only the name has been lost in time. The word "pahit" is Malay for "bitters."

Whatever you want to call it, it is a fabulous aperitif and a great way to experience your favorite gins.

    What You'll Need

    • 1 1/2 ounce gin
    • 3-4 dashes Angostura bitters

    How to Make It

    1. Pour the ingredients into a cocktail shaker with ice cubes.
    2. Stir well.
    3. Strain into a chilled cocktail glass.

A Traditional Way to Mix the Pink Gin

Plymouth Gin claims that there is a more traditional way to mix up a Pink Gin and it is a bit more involved than simply stirring gin with bitters. Of course, they recommend their own gin, specifically Plymouth Navy Strength Gin, and it is a very fine choice indeed.

"Navy Strength" gins are higher proof than the average gin and Plymouth's version weighs in at 57% ABV (114 proof). The point of this Pink Gin is to get the alcohol to feel "pleasant not aggressive" and Plymouth recommends tasting it prior to straining it into the glass.

It's a great strategy and proof that dilution is key to making our cocktails spectacular. We need water to cut the alcohol and make the drink pleasant, particularly with those full-flavored, overproof gins. I encourage you to try the Pink Gin made both ways so you can see the difference.

    1. Add 1 dash of Angostura bitters to a mixing glass filled with ice.
    2. Stir for 10-15 seconds.
    3. Swirl this bittered ice and water around in a cocktail glass.
    4. Dump out the water, leaving the glass with a bitters rinse.
    5. Back in your mixing glass, pour a "large measure" of gin (2 ounces is good) and fill it with ice.
    6. Stir well and strain into a cocktail glass.
    7. Express the oils of a lemon peel over the drink and drop the peel in if you like.

    Choosing the Right Gin

Of course, you can choose any gin you like for a Pink Gin though you may enjoy this cocktail more with one of the sweeter or lighter profiled gins. Remember that there is nothing besides bitters and water added to this drink, so whichever gin you choose, it should definitely be your best.

Here are a few gins that you might want to try out:

    • Plymouth Gin - A fruitier profile with a full body, Plymouth Gin is a perfect candidate for the Pink Gin.
    • Hayman's Old Tom Gin - Old Tom gins bridge the gap between sweet genever and those London dry gins we love so much. Hayman's is one of the best of this small class of old-school gin.

    • Tanqueray Malacca - It makes a rare appearance on the market, but this sweetened version of the famous London dry is perfect for a Pink Gin. When you see it, mix it!
    • Nolet's Silver Dry Gin - Soft florals and fruits are the hallmarks of this gin and it deserves the gentle treatment of a Pink Gin.
    • Right Gin - A Swedish gin that also has a sweeter flavor, you'll love the rosiness of this one in such a simple cocktail.
    • Aviation Gin - One of the first 'New Western Dry Gins' to get us thinking about a softer side of gin, Aviation is readily available and ideal for drinks like this.

You can also use the Pink Gin as a sort of litmus test for trying out new gin brands. It's a little better than even the Classic Martini for exploration because it is so clean and allows the gin to shine virtually unadulterated. Use it to familiarize yourself with craft gin brands like William Elegant 48 or Bloom Gin, or to compare the contrast of Leopold's two spectacular offerings.

How Strong is the Pink Gin?

The Pink Gin will be slightly weaker than the bottling strength of the gin you pour. This is because it is diluted with water alone and your approach to mixing will play a greater role. Instead of estimating the strength of the drink, let's look at how the dilution will affect your Pink Gin.

    • If you stir your Pink Gin with an 80-proof gin using our typical 1/2 ounce allowance for dilution, the drink will be about 32% ABV (64 proof).
    • If you use Plymouth's suggested dilution method you might get an entire ounce of water added to the drink. In this case, an 80-proof gin would weigh in around 27% ABV (54 proof).

    • If we stir according to Plymouth using their Navy Strength, we top them all at about 38% ABV (76 proof).

The strength of the Pink Gin and similar cocktails is precisely why they are served in such small proportions. Notice that neither method tops a 3-ounce drink, even with water. These are meant to be small, casual drinks to be enjoyed slowly and the intention is not to get drunk (save that train of thought for those party shots).

Drink Pink with these Do-Good Cocktails

Finally, pink cocktails with purpose. In honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month this October, bars around the nation are mixing up pink-hued drinks with proceeds benefiting local breast cancer charities. These seven cocktails will help you sip for a good cause.

Recipe courtesy David Delaplaine, beer manager, Roofers Union, Washington, D.C.

Half of the proceeds from this easy-to-make grapefruit beer “hoptail” will benefit Men Against Breast Cancer, a Maryland-based organization that provides support services to educate and empower men to be effective caregivers to those diagnosed with cancer.

Combine Campari and grapefruit beer in chilled highball glass. Stir and serve immediately.

Recipe courtesy Dale LoSasso, director of food and beverage at La Concha Key West, Key West, Florida.

This historic resort’s sleek hotel bar, 430 Duval, will donate $.50 from the sales of each Smell the Roses spritzer to the Zonta Club of Key West’s Awareness Breast Cancer Walk, which works to provide free mammograms to the Key West community.

In a shaking tin filled with ice, combine vodka and St. Germain liqueur. Pour into martini glass and top with the rosé. Garnish with an edible flower.

Recipe courtesy Lucinda Weed, bartender, Tujagues, New Orleans.

The legendary Big Easy bar and restaurant—purportedly the second oldest in the city—will donate $1 from the sales of each Sherry-based Glinda of the North drink to the American Cancer Society in October.

Stir together caçhaca, Sherry, Campari, Strega and bitters in a mixing tin filled with ice. Strain into a cocktail glass and garnish with a lemon twist.

Recipe courtesy Jan Russell, craftologist, Lucy Restaurant & Bar at Bardessono Yountville, California.

Homemade strawberry-thyme syrup from the bar’s own garden gives the CBC cocktail its pink hue, and 100 percent of the proceeds will benefit the Sisters 5/K Run/Walk to Crush Breast Cancer.

Combine vodka, Chartreuse, syrup, pineapple gum and lemon juice in a shaker tin filled with ice. Shake all ingredients and double strain into a coupe glass. Garnish with the strawberry.

    Strawberry and Lemon Thyme Syrup:

    Pink Champagne Cocktail

Just 3 easy ingredients and you are on your way to a delicious celebration beverage! Pink Champagne Cocktail is a little bit sweet, a lot bubbly, and perfect for parties.

I love to read. And in my time off this last week I have knocked down two novels and started another. I basically feel like I am winning at life.

In one of the books I just finished there is a trivia night fundraiser for the school. All the parents have to dress up as either Elvis Presley or Audrey Hepburn and the PTA is serving these pink champagne cocktails that everyone keeps raving over. So after reading the chapter devoted almost entirely to this drink I decided two things:

    1. My kids are going to the wrong schools and 2. I HAVE TO make Pink Champagne Cocktails.

A few of the characters try to identify the ingredients — mint? Vodka? Definitely vodka. And certainly some champagne. They never really specify the pinkness though — was it pink champagne? Some kind of juice? I was kind of left to my own devices on that.

So I went and bought a bunch of things and put them together in different combinations until I had something I liked. Something I really liked. It’s bubbly X 2, very pink, and goes down easy. It’s totally tasty, but is also a little strong which makes it perfect for parties.

I will be making these on New Year’s Eve.

But they would also be terrific for a girls night get-together. Or you know, if maybe your school does trivia night fundraisers with awesome costumes.

The first thing you’ll need is some kind of pink champagne. This has gotten really easy to find — my local stores had varieties in all price points, but I actually ended up with a bubbly pink moscato for what I photographed here.

    Next you’ll need vodka.

And then!! You’ll need gingerale. That’s the bubbly to the second power. I used a cranberry gingerale because I wanted these EXTRA pink but they will still be delicious with regular old ginger-colored gingerale. I know. I tried it. You’re welcome. The cranberry stuff is usually only available around the holidays so I didn’t want you guys to be wandering around the beverage centers stressing about pink soda.

    • ½ ounce vodka
    • 3 ounces pink champagne, chilled
    • cranberry gingerale, chilled (see note)
    • strawberry or sugared cranberry garnish (optional)
    1. Pour the vodka in the bottom of a champagne flute.
    2. Top it with the chilled pink champagne.
    3. Fill the glass the rest of the way with the cranberry gingerale. Garnish with a strawberry or sugared cranberry (optional).

    Champagne AND vodka?! I’m sold

I was totally thinking of you when I put this together. Happy New Year.

They’re sooooo pretty!! I love the addition of vodka, that makes everything better. 🙂 Happy New Year Heather.

A really fun twist on this cocktail is:

    PINK CHAMPAGNE CLOUD

    Pink Moscato or Champagne

    Strawberry/Vanilla Cotton Candy

    Long skewer or pick

•• All items must be ice cold to start. Pour in wet ingredients to taste. Take a puff of cotton candy and place in middle of skewer. Place skewer on top of glass to keep candy from getting wet. It is a decadent looking and tasting cocktail!
