Prince Harry Cocktail Recipe

This delicious and intense cocktail—a distant cousin of the Dark and Stormy—is tangy and much less sweet than you'd expect, with a brooding background of ginger root lurking just behind the richness of rum. You can thin it out more with ginger beer if you like, but we enjoy this drink nearly straight up, with just a little fizz to lighten.

Fresh lime juice is essential here; don't buy the bottled stuff. We used Coruba rum, but Brugal and Goslings would work as well.

Recipe from Michael Neff of Ward III in NYC.

  • Yield: makes 1 cocktail
  • Active time: 4 minutes
  • Total time: 4 minutes

Ingredients

  • Ice
  • 3/4 ounce dark rum
  • 3/4 ounce King's Ginger
  • 1/2 ounce freshly squeezed lime juice
  • Dash Angostura bitters
  • 1 ounce ginger beer, or more to taste
  • Garnish: lime twist

Directions

Fill a cocktail shaker with ice. Add rum, King's Ginger, lime juice, and Angostura. Shake well and strain into an ice-filled old fashioned glass. Top with ginger beer and garnish with lime twist.

Five Cocktails Inspired by the Music Icon Prince

William Grant & Sons whipped up tribute drinks at this year's Tales of the Cocktail

by Emily Arden Wells

This year we lost legends. David Bowie and Prince both passed in the early months of 2016, two musicians who changed the music industry intrinsically and influenced generations of people with their work. In the days and even months following their deaths, tributes flooded in: performances on award shows, speeches, dedicated television specials, and the outpouring of personal stories shared online and on social media. Strangely, a new tribute trend popped up on the internet this year: tribute cocktails. Bartenders took to Instagram to share photos and recipes of their liquid dedications, aptly named for their favorite songs. And while naming cocktails after song titles and lyrics has been happening for years, suddenly these drinks began to embody the fallen artist they were meant to honor—an ingestible memorial.

For a culture that worships our food by taking copious photos, waiting in line for hours at the newest hot-spot, and paying large sums for meals at Michelin-starred restaurants, somehow this all makes sense. We now choose to honor our legends by sipping them. And without missing a beat, William Grant & Sons hosted a tribute "Spirited Dinner" to Bowie and Prince during Tales of the Cocktail, the New Orleans cocktail festival held every year in July. The dinner featured Bowie inspired dishes and Prince inspired cocktails created by Gina Chersevani of Buffalo & Bergen in Washington D.C. Here are all five of the drinks in their Purple Glory.

Dearly Beloved

The first cocktail of the night, Dearly Beloved, was light and refreshing—a Hendrick’s Gin cocktail with sesame, cucumber, lemon, and wasabi-rice wine vinegar. The side of the glass was covered in toasted sesame seeds, a nice crunchy element that complemented the flavors of sesame and wasabi in the cocktail itself. This is a perfect summer drink to make every weekend and enjoy surrounded by friends and family. You don’t have to tell them that your "Dearly Beloved" is this cocktail (we won’t).

2 parts Hendrick’s Gin washed with toasted white sesame

2 parts cucumber water

1 part wasabi-rice wine vinegar

In a shaker tin combine the ingredients, strain into a sesame rimmed Collins glass and top with a touch of sparkling water.

Diamonds and Pearls

The next cocktail was a wildly creative one, inspired by the song "Diamonds and Pearls" and made with Milagro Tequila, anise and almond-simple milk, fresh lime juice, and rimmed with almond salt. Normally, cocktails with nut flavors are prepared with heavily sweet orgeat syrups, but the almond-simple milk was light and delicate, the "pearl" to accompany the bright and vegetal flavors of the "diamond"—the tequila.

2 parts Milagro Tequila

1 part anise and almond-simple milk

1 part lime juice

Combine ingredients in a shaker tin, then double strain over fresh ice in almond salt rimmed double rocks glass.

Let's Go Crazy

The third course was a favorite of the evening: a corn water cocktail made with Reyka Vodka, cilantro-ginger simple, and a few drops of chili oil. This cocktail was essentially a liquid tamale—sweet, spicy and savory—and the drops of chili oil allowed you to control the heat, and the craziness.

2 parts Reyka Vodka

1 part Corn water

.5 part cilantro-ginger simple syrup

Garnish with 3 drops chili oil

In a shaker tin combine the ingredients, double strained Chilled coupe glass, then dot the chili oil.

Purple Rain

It wouldn’t be a Prince tribute without Purple Rain—and this cocktail was the most theatrical of them all. Wine glasses were filled with a cocktail of toasted sunflower-washed Hendrick’s Gin, Crème de Violet, and lemon juice, and were then topped with an edible purple potato leaf and a few drops of the purple hued cocktail. Guests then topped off the cocktail with champagne, letting it rain.

2 parts Hendrick’s Gin washed with toasted sunflowers

1 part Creme de Violet

In a shaker tin, combine Hendrick's Gin, Creme de Violet and lemon, shake and strain into chilled wine glass. Take a purple potato leaf and lay across top of the glass, and with an eye dropper place a few drops of cocktail on the leaf so that the drops rain into the glass as it being served.

Quite appropriately, the dessert course was Cream—a bittersweet cocktail made with Sailor Jerry rum, cold brewed coffee, and sweetened with fig paste and condensed milk. This cocktail was decadent and defiant, just the way Prince would have liked it.

2 parts Sailor Jerry

1 tsp fig paste

1 tsp condensed milk

4 parts cold brewed coffee

In a shaker tin, combine all ingredient, hard shake and double strain over fresh ice, serve immediately.

Try a Prince William & Kate Middleton-Inspired Cocktail

Here on this side of the pond, royal watchers will celebrate the big wedding of Kate Middleton and Prince William early – taking in the festivities in the wee morning hours.

But after all the tea has been sipped and scones nibbled, revelers may want to toast the happy couple with a cocktail – and one English spirit company has got just the recipe.

Mixologist Dan Warner of Beefeater, the iconic British liquor brand that adorns their bottles with exact replicas of the Beefeaters who guard the Tower of London, tells PEOPLE he created his special Royal Punch with the bride and groom-to-be in mind.

“Of course I thought first and foremost of the happy couple when creating it,” he says of the recipe. “Drinking punch represents a tradition that is long associated with celebrating royal events.”

“As of late, punch has also resurfaced as a modern and trendy drink du jour, and it caters very well to large groups,” he adds. “It’s perfect for a viewing party for loyal royal followers in the U.K. and those in the U.S. who want to celebrate with a decidedly English bent.”

Want to make the drink yourself? Here’s the recipe:

Beefeater Royal Punch

• 2 parts Beefeater London Dry Gin

• 1 part Dubonnet (This is a nod to the Queen Mum, who “was known to enjoy gin and Dubonnet as an apertif,” notes Warner)

• 1 part pomegranate juice (“It represents marriage.”)

• 2 parts fresh lemonade (American style)

• Angostura bitters to taste

Serve in a large punch bowl (or a large, deep casserole dish) and garnish with wheels of lemon and lime, mint sprigs and pomegranate seeds.

Chill the punch with lots of regular ice cubes or make your own fruit ice cubes by freezing orange and lemon slices with water in a plastic container (ice cream tub or similar).

    Purple Rain, Purple Rain Cocktail

    Purple Rain, Purple Rain Cocktail

Last Thursday we lost a legend, a musical genius – a true icon. In honor of Prince, Twist Cocktails is keeping his memory alive with our version of a specialty boozy beverage called the Purple Rain Cocktail. This cocktail is great for an afternoon pool party or a late night cocktail & appetizer reception. If you’re a Prince fan like we are, turn up the Revolution and get to mixing!

Purple Rain Cocktail: (makes two drinks)

3 ounces of Viniq Purple Shimmery Liqueur OR 3 ounces of regular Vodka, a 1/2 ounce of Blue Curacao & a splash of Grenadine

3 ounces of Lemonade, Sprite or Club Soda

Pour 1/4 cup of sugar on a flat plate. Rim your glasses with a lemon wedge and dip into sugar, set aside. In an ice filled shaker, pour your liquids in and shake well. Put fresh ice into glasses, pour cocktails and garnish with cherries, a la Under the Cherry Moon – starring and directed by Prince in 1986.

Prince’s favorite cocktail was called The Kid, named after his character in Purple Rain. It has Gin, cranberry juice, Blue Curacao, sweet & sour mix & soda water.

    Prince Memorial Cocktails

You know, I’ve always found cocktails that memorialize an occasion, or person, to be a bit cheesy and so I rarely partake in “theme” drinking. I found myself in a situation last week when Prince died, that folks who were coming to our already-planned cocktail party that night began asking if I was going to be making any Prince-themed drinks to remember him by.

Drinking and partying in memory of someone who’s passed away is a thing, and people have done it for thousands of years (at least), so I softened to the idea of some themed cocktails, both for the sake of our party guests and because of fun in creating new cocktails! After 3 recipe revisions for each, we got them just right. The first drink we made is the Purple Rain (pictured above).

    • in a shaker, add:
    • 2 oz coconut water
    • 1 1/2 oz vodka
    • 1 oz açaí juice
    • shake and strain into a chilled cocktail glass

Next up, we made a riff on a Gin Sour by including some muddled raspberries:

    Raspberry Beret (by Greg Mays)

    • in a shaker, add:
    • 5 raspberries
    • 1/2 oz simple syrup
    • muddle the raspberries well, then add:
    • 2 oz gin
    • 1 oz lemon juice
    • 1 egg white
    • dry shake (no ice), then add ice and shake again to chill
    • double strain into an old fashioned glass filled with ice and add 3 raspberries for garnish
    • add 2 drops of Whiskey Barrel Aged Bitters on the foam

So there you are: 2 simple cocktails you can drink in memory of The Purple One. Cheers!
