Paradise Recipe

The Paradise is one of the lesser known classic cocktails that has long been a favorite aperitif. Where the Martini is dry, the Paradise is sweet and fruity and a nice precursor to summer dinners.

If you can, use fresh squeezed orange juice to complement the gin and for the gin, a London dry like Martin Miller's is perfect.

This is the up version of the drink, but a Paradise shooter is also pretty popular. To make that one, simply shake up equal parts of these three ingredients and strain it into a shot glass.

The Long Island Iced Tea’s azure cousin is the other.

The Blue Hawaii wasn’t named after the Elvis movie, like y.

Invented around 1911 by bartender Hugo R. Ensslus at the Hot.

This fruity and refreshing variation on a classic Martini is.

Made with equal parts gin, apricot brandy and orange juice, the Paradise Cocktail is almost vulgar to drink in its original form. It’s an unbalanced, saccharine mess. In an effort to save the classic cocktail, we decided to tweak the recipe to make it as delicious as the name implies. Somewhere in between the version in the Savoy Cocktail Book and author David Wondrich’s variation, this modernized take is a refreshing beach-tail that’s perfect for summer imbibing. Just remember to use fresh squeezed orange juice instead of the concentrated stuff from the bottle—it makes a world of difference.

The Essentials

Ingredients

  • Add all ingredients, sans the garnish, to a shaker tin with ice. Shake.
  • Using a Hawthorne strainer, strain the cocktail into a chilled coupe glass.
  • Garnish with an orchid.

The Long Island Iced Tea’s azure cousin is the other most efficient way to order everything but the kitchen sink at the bar. A mixture of vodka, tequila, rum and gin, the AMF drink replaces the LIIT’s triple sec for blue curaçao, and Coca-Cola for lemon-lime soda. The name, which stands for "Adios Mother F***er," was inspired by the cockt.

    Strawberry Paradise Recipe

It’s Friday and in order to get you ready for a proper happy hour this evening I got together with some girlfriends to bring you 8 Summer Cocktail Recipes! We’re calling this one “drinks with the girls” because when you are done here, you will want to call a friend and get a cocktail hour on the calendar STAT!

Getting together with my girl friends is something that I make time for. I have a group of friends and on the first Friday of each month we do a dinner out, no kids. It is something I look forward to because one thing I miss about being younger is all the time I got to spend goofing off with my girl friends. This summer I plan to have them over for a girls night and these cocktail ideas are going to come in handy for sure!

And even though it is drinks with the “girls” I consulted the hubs, cause he is always mixing up fun drinks for us.

So we went to “work” and came up with this Strawberry Paradise Cocktail and sat back and enjoyed one (or two) on a warm evening on our almost complete outdoor living room.

We tried this mix with a few different juices and this one was our favorite. But really any juice with Strawberry in it was a close match.

    Strawberry Paradise Recipe

2 parts White Cran Strawberry Juice or Strawberry Lemonade (The White Cran was our favorite)

    1/4 part sweetened lime juice

One of the hubs’ obsessions when he makes cocktails is having these fancy square ice cubes. So for Christmas I put this fun square ice cube tray in his stocking. I have to admit, it is fun to have special ice cubes and they last so long. No watery cocktails here!

    Doesn’t it look delicious!

Ok so you are off to a good start, but there are 7 more cocktail recipes for you to check out. So hop on over and see what my friends have mixed up with the links below!

Oh my goodness… This sounds and looks delicious. We are finally getting patio weather here, and I’ve been looking for a good, refreshing, as I call it, fizzy! 🙂 Wonder if it would be good as a frozen, blended beverage. Do you think blending the beverage into a frozen type daiquiri would alter the flavor to much?

I think that is a fantastic idea!

I love that you mentioned the ice cubes because as soon as I saw your drink picture I thought “whoa, those are awesome ice cubes”. Then I moved on to wishing I had the drink in my hand. It looks so light & refreshing for a hot summer evening.

You girls are doing a great job with these drinks they all looks so delish!! I need to run out and grab some of these ingredients! I can’t wait to try making some of these.

Sounds so simple and includes all my fave flavors. The square ice cubes are too cool!

    Paradise

    Ingredients

    • 2 ounces gin -- London dry gin
    • 1 1/2 teaspoons brandy -- apricot brandy
    • 1 ounce orange juice
    • 1/2 ounce lemon juice

    Instructions:

Shake well with cracked ice, then strain into a chilled cocktail glass.

    The Wondrich Take:

Times change, and, of course, people with them. In droves. Schools. Herds. Flocks. Large, milling clumps. One day, there's a bull market. The next, it's suddenly grown shaggy and taken to rearing up on its hind legs. One day everybody's drinking cocktails with, say, peach schnapps in them, the next it's in the back of the liquor cabinet with that bottle of oily brown stuff somebody brought you from Bulgaria.

Take the case of apricot brandy. It was trendy, once. Back around 1950, Manhattan's Stork Club -- the hottest night club in America, in an era when night clubs were hot -- used it in its Cub Room Special, the Cub Room being the area where it warehoused its VIPs. But to find the real apricot brandy fiends, you would've had to frequent the chic Zebra Room, out in L.A., where the movie folk met the debutantes. Now, movie folk have driven more trends in drink than just about anyone, some of which -- tequila, vodka -- are still with us. This one ain't, even with all the best efforts of Joan Crawford and Hedda Hopper (who, along with the Zebra Room and some other movie types, contributed apricot brandy cocktails to Bottoms Up, a rather racy 1951 drink compendium). In fact, things have gotten so cold on the apricot brandy front that we're not even quite sure what the stuff is.

Consider the name. Does it mean, like "apple brandy," a brandy distilled from a fermented mash of the fruit? These tend to be lightly perfumed and high in proof. Or does it mean, like "peach brandy," a sweetened grape brandy merely flavored with the fruit (low-proof, heavy, and very fruity -- a liqueur, in other words)? And, more important, what did it mean way back when? (There's a pleasing element of archaeology to what we do here at the Esquire Institute for Advanced Study in Mixology.) This isn't a trivial distinction -- if we're talking about the former, the Paradise (the grandmère of apricot brandy drinks) will be light, dry, and potent. But days of digging through the professional literature tell us that we're not, and it's not. Apricot brandy, as used in cocktails, is a liqueur.

Which means that the Paradise, if you follow the standard recipes -- equal parts gin, apricot brandy, and orange juice -- is, basically, disgusting: it tastes like it should have codeine in it. Even if you double the gin and pitch in a splash of lemon juice, as the 1930 Savoy Cocktail Book suggests, it's not much better. Yet, we believe, the Paradise can be saved. It even should be saved, for the same reason that we try to save a rare species of orchid. There's a delicately perfumed, exotic -- even romantic -- flower in this drink, just waiting for the magic formula to coax it out. Here's our best effort.
