Cocktail Friday: Long Island Iced Coffee

Among the amazing food and drink on offer at Food Blogger Connect this year was goodbeans cold brew coffee. I had never tried cold brew coffee before and I LOVED it. This coffee is made by soaking coarse-ground beans in water for a long time (12 hours or longer) and then filtered. It tastes absolutely sensational – especially in this weather, over ice. I hope goodbeans grow their business enough for their products to become widely available. In the meantime I might experiment with making my own cold brew at home.

The first thought I had when I tasted cold brew was ‘this would be great in a cocktail’ – and it absolutely does. Which brings me to the latest twisted Cocktail Friday – the Long Island Iced Coffee. This is the kind of cocktail that should probably come with a health warning. It is extremely refreshing and very, very potent. Unlike the Long Island Iced Tea, which contains no actual tea in it, this contains coffee so remember that if consuming this late at night. If you can’t find (or make) any cold brew coffee by all means substitute with cola but leave out the ginger beer.

But before I leave you I am going to share this quote from the Gilmore Girls:

“Someday, when you’re a little older, you will be introduced to something that is extremely seductive but fickle. A fair-weather friend who seems benign but packs a wallop like a donkey kick, and that is the Long Island Iced Tea. It makes you do things that you normally wouldn’t do, like lifting your skirt in public or calling someone you normally wouldn’t call at really weird times.”

Heed Lorelai’s words, drink responsibly and please don’t lift your skirt in public.

  • 1 tbsp dark rum
  • 1 tbsp vodka
  • 1 tbsp gin
  • 1 tbsp Patrón XO Cafe Tequila (can substitute with gold tequila)
  • 1 tbsp Tia Maria
  • 2 tbsp ginger beer
  • 1-2 tbsp lime juice
  • Cold brew coffee, to top up
  • Lime wedges to serve
  1. Half fill a tall glass with ice.
  2. Fill a cocktail shaker with plenty of ice and add all the spirits and the lime juice. Shake briefly.
  3. Strain over the ice in the glass. Add the ginger beer and cold brew to top up and stir.
  4. Garnish with lime wedges and serve.

That sounds delish x

mmm, I could drink that right now!

The main reason I don't like Long Island iced tea is because it contains cola. I think I could quite happily drink one of these though, not sure I'd manage a second as it does sounds very potent!

i could definitely kick back with one of these right about now.. looks seriously delicious.

Wow! That sounds brilliant! May even loosen the wife up a bit also! lol

Ooh just love a good long island iced tea 🙂 xx

Fantastic! I can start on them tonight – Thursday is the new Friday, right?

Long Island Iced Tea

Long Island Iced Teas are a favorite go-to drink at bars & restaurants across Long Island, and the globe - they're delicious, and pack quite the punch!

There's some dispute to the origins of the Long Island Iced Tea, however, many sources credit the drink's invention to Robert Butt, who first concocted this creative cocktail in 1972 during a bar tending contest. Butt was bar tending at Oak Beach Inn, located right here on Long Island in Oak Beach, when he participated in the now infamous cocktail creation contest where the Long Island Iced Tea was born. Butt's high alcohol concoction became an immediate hit, and by the mid-1970s, nearly every bar on Long Island began serving up this Summer treat.

The Long Island Iced Tea has a much higher alcohol concentration than most mixed drinks (approximately 22%). It is created by combining five different alcohols and a splash of Coke, and a splash of sour mix, and it's so popular is because it sure packs a punch!

Planning a Bridesmaid Cocktail Party!

By Lauren Pozmanter Published: November 09 2013

Before you even start planning the big day, you need to make sure all of your bridesmaids are on board!

Every bride needs to start planning their wedding at some point. Some are excited and some dread the prospect of getting their bridesmaids together for the first time to start working out all of the details for the big day. So what is the best way to start off this whirlwind process? The best thing to do is take charge immediately and set an evening aside for the start date. A simple cocktail party will keep tensions low and give you a relaxed atmosphere.

The first thing to do for this kick off of starts is think about the theme that you want your wedding to take on. By subtly inserting this theme into your cocktail party you are telling your bridesmaids that this is going to be theme of the big day and that decision is already made. For example if you are having a fall themed wedding you are going to want to send invitations out to the party with a fall theme and keep the décor of the evening to a fall color palette (i.e reds, oranges, browns).

In the invitation you can really set the tone for the wedding. In this invitation you should formally ask your friend to be a bridesmaid and to please join you for some drinks and light wedding planning. Step up your game with sewn or knit invitations to show that you aren't messing around and that you expect a very creative level brought to the wedding planning table.

The next thing to do is start planning the party itself. You will want to stick to your basic fall palette and make it crafty. Decorate with flowers that can be used as a sample of what you want in your bouquet, this can be done in various different flower combinations.

The same goes with the cocktails. Since this is a cocktail party you will want to sample just a few signature cocktails ideas that you might have in mind. From there you can narrow it down to one or two drinks or build ideas off of there. Start with maybe a few basic cocktails and one that is super unique. You can also use really creative tumblers, hand decorated, if you are really going the DIY route. Tag each glass with a bridesmaid's, maybe on a piece of fringed ribbon, and you also have a great bridesmaid's gift! Or you can even have a little glass decorating part of the evening to stay the planning off on a fun foot! With those two things out of the way you have already planned two crucial parts of your wedding day!

Before you turn over the planning to the bridesmaids, make sure you have a little diary of things that are not to be set aside that you want for your wedding day. Having these non negotiables will keep opinionated bridesmaids in place. This party will not only serve as a planning event but also an ice breaker for your bridesmaids so don't forget to have fun! At the end of the evening you will be that much closer to your dream wedding with a supportive group of friends working to make it a reality.

Long Island Iced Tea

An unusual blend of vodka, gin, tequila, rum and orange liqueur with cola, the Long Island Iced Tea flavours of vanilla and lightly tannic wood make it taste a little like tea, but in fact they come from a mix of quality aged spirits.

About this recipe

Ingredients

Captain Morgan® Original Spiced Gold

Captain Morgan® Original Spiced Gold

Captain Morgan Original Spiced Gold is inspired by the Caribbean's beauty and abundant nature, with a delicious smooth-bodied and subtly spicy flavour.

How to make

Using a jigger, measure 17.5ml Captain Morgan Spiced, 17.5ml Smirnoff No.21 Vodka, 17.5ml Gordon's London Dry Gin, 17.5ml orange liqueur, 17.5ml Don Julio Blanco Tequila, 17.5ml sugar syrup, 15ml lemon juice and 17.5ml lime juice into a shaker.

Shake the mixture vigorously until the surface of the cocktail shaker feels chilled.

Use a cocktail strainer to strain the liquid into a Highball glass filled with cubes of ice.

Pour cola into the drink to fill to the top of the glass.

Cut a slice of lemon with a sharp knife on a chopping board and place in the drink to garnish.

Could you make this in advance and add the cola when I get to the picnic?

You certainly could! Enjoy!

It needs a shot of triple sec and a dash of sweet and sour.

That sounds like a great addition!

Always makes me chuckle a bit when this is called a Long Island Ice Tea. Being from Long Island we just call it an Ice tea 🙂

Leave some comments about the Long Island Iced Tea

O. M. G This drink is Amazing, nice to drink, and deadly!

Haad this drink on holiday in south africa, best cocktail ever but really really strong so beware

Great drink, looks better if you add the cola to the glass first and layer the shaken & strained ingredients on top

i had this drink on holiday!and i was completely smashed after having this drink!its nice too! just a lil strong

This is the mutts nuts. Nothing better than doing a BBQ and drinking these till the sun goes down. Awesome drink, not for the faint hearted

this drink is nice and the perfect cocktail to make you drunk without spendin too much

this is the perfect cocktail. I would have to dissagree with the comment about the coke on the bottom though, its great to have the right amount of coke ( like a glass coke bottle ) to give to the client to pour themselves, it is such a beautiful sight and smell as the dark encompasses the brilliant mixture below. this is the cocktail for me

Its best to fill a high-ball glass with ice, then add 2/3 cola (Not DIET) then slowly pour the mixture over the top ice cube you get an awesome black and white effect!

why wait till your on holiday or at a party? this drink is also perfect for quiet nights in, picnics, lunchbrakes, tuesdays. . . having done some failry extensive research into the subject, (which involved sampling cocktails from thousands of bars around the world) i can confirm that when made properly this is by far the greatest cocktail ever created. No word of a lie. Some people say its too strong, these people are idiots who are probably not worth talking to.

i once drank 7 of these in about a 2-3 hour span, and gosh if you want to get drunk fast, this is the drink .

its amazing that you can mix that many spirits in a drink and have such a balanced neutral and not overimposing flavour theres not many bars that dont serve this and its easy to understand whyfor me only a black russian or white cloud come close in the cocktail world !

by redstar alexander

i will like your cocktail ANd my self never drink but i love make cocktail,

by lalanjee sharma

I lurve this drink, i have drank it since my first bar at 17, now 25 and its the only one i ever order!

in my opinion yu must fill mosty with lemon juice (fresh is best) and then top up with coke!

very nice. . . when mape properly DO NOT put malabu in it! which most places seem to do! an ace drink and if made properly its a nice strong drink

Very lovely cocktail indeed. . . to give it an eye catching look try adding the coke to a glass filled wit ice about half way. . . then float the white spirits over the ice to layer. garnish with a slice of lemon and a sprig of mint :) . . . perfect cocktail, from the perfect barman!

by Jits (Bar Red Square - Croydon)

first ever alcoholic drink i tasted, sheer genius

My fave cocktail, I love it I love it I love it. It has all the right ingreadents to make any hoiliday fantasic

by Lynsey Aberdeen

A hidden punch. Just the way I like it.

This is an excellent drink, goes down very easily and makes you feel very mellow. Don't feel as if I have started my holidays until I sample my first Iced Tea

by Carole from Belfast

totaly love this drink. You should try this on a holiday in the sun. **** you will feel soooooooo fabulouse

This is an excellent drink but one for at home as having one made on a night out is a very expensive act (althought they do a very resonable one in the Hard Rock) avoid places that for some reason put Baileys in. Get some exact pours get a speed rack and get blasted!

this fucken drinkis the absolute ****,it will get you so messed up you wont be able to say long island. all hail the get ****** quick routine

The person whoever made this drink basically got bored and put together a few popular drinks and mixed em to create a boring cocktail, a waste of ingredients, use them on something better.

by Daniel Veasey

Most suited for summer but works at any kind of weather!

Got me drunk. . tastes good. . mmmmm

Hicupp. . . . i jus wanna sayy i luvv dish hicup drink man hicup i wers rery tastly mmm

This is a great drink. One of those easy down, 'I feel just fine' summer quenchers. I like adding a little bourbon for a slightly smokier kick.

by William McLaughlan, Glasgow

Awesome and refreshing - but tastes fresher without the tequila, especially if you leave the fresh lime until last and squeeze it into the top of the completed drink!

Great sundowner which can be topped up with Cola. Takes you on a ride, but the constant top up with cola sobers you up eventually. Not good for those on a calorie restricted diet - this is fatal! Diet Cola spoilts it.

Blue Long Island drink recipe

THIS PAGE MAY CONTAIN AFFILIATE LINKS. PLEASE READ MY DISCLOSURE.

Once upon a time, it must have occurred to someone that the Long Island Iced Tea was nearly perfect, except for one thing: it wasn’t blue. The Blue Long Island cocktail swaps out the cola from the Long Island Iced Tea for blue Curaçao.

That makes this a delicious and very refreshing cocktail that’s all about the orange and lemon flavors. The recipe calls for sweet and sour, at which a lot of people like to turn up their noses. If you’ve never had good bottled sour mix, that attitude is understandable. But you can make your own sweet and sour with fresh-squeezed lemon juice, and it’s a whole different animal. It has a nice fresh taste, and you can make it just as sweet or tart as you want. It involves buying some fruit and doing some cooking, but it’s really quick and easy to make.

But another option is to spring for a better quality sour mix like Finest Call. Brands make a difference when it comes to this ingredient.

Either way you go, this is a very tasty drink. And it’s a double – it’s got four ounces of hard liquor. It’s ideal for sipping along, and in fact it can go very well with a meal. I like it with dishes that have a salty-sweet element – like this Chicken Teriyaki Recipe from Arbuz. This isn’t the heavily glaze teriyaki chicken that you might be used to. It’s lighter, but it’s still very savory, and it makes a wonderful contrast orange and lemon.

If you like this drink, check out the Blue Skies cocktail, which has similar flavors but is much lighter on the alcohol. The Blue Monday cocktail is also similar, and it falls somewhere in between the two in terms of alcohol strength.

Blue Long Island Drink Recipe

The Blue Long Island is similar to a Long Island Iced Tea, but it features Blue Curacao instead of cola. This gives it a nice orange flavor that's really enjoyable.

5 min Prep Time

5 min Total Time

  • 1 ounce vodka
  • 1 ounce gin
  • 1 ounce light rum
  • 1 ounce gold tequila
  • 1 ounce Blue Curacao liqueur
  • 5 ounces sour mix

  1. Fill a collins glass with ice.
  2. Pour in the liquors, and then the sour mix .
  3. Finally, add the blue curacao.
  4. Garnish with a slice of lemon and a straw.
  5. And feel free to tinker with the amount of sweet and sour to get it to your taste.

Pépé le Moko's Long Island Iced Tea Recipe

A bad drink made good.

How to Make the New Long Island Iced Tea

• .75 oz lemon juice

• 2 tsp simple syrup (2:1 sugar to water)

Shake, strain into Collins glass over crushed ice, top with .75 oz Mexican Coke. Lemon twist.

Nobody likes good things. Let me start over. It's not that nobody likes good things; there is a robust market for alba white truffles, first-growth burgundies, o-toro, and the like. But it takes a lot of money to eat those things, and if they're not great, they're not worth paying for. And even if they are, who can afford them? So we like bad things, things like hash browns and hamburgers and bacon and cupcakes. That's just the way it is now.

For that reason, making bad things good has become the great project of our time. And on a recent visit to—where else?— Portland, I saw two great examples of this. One was the spectacular, pancetta-wrapped meat loaf at The Woodsman Tavern. And the other, more beguiling to me because it's drawn from a worse original, was the Long Island Iced Tea at Pépé le Moko, the craft cocktail bar underneath the Ace Hotel.

Jeff Morgenthaler, the bartender/mixologist at Pépé le Moko, sees the same dynamic at work in bars as in kitchens. "I don't think this is any different from what chefs were doing ten years ago when everybody got into meatloaf and macaroni and cheese and all the comfort food stuff. Chefs had gotten to a point where they learned how to cook and could go back and make that stuff and turn it into really good food."

Morgenthaler is going in that direction at Pépé le Moko, creating better versions of post-prohibition drinks like Long Island Iced Teas and Amaretto Sours—the kind of swill typically downed by woo girls looking for good times. Those drinks were big in the 80s, when cocktails were typically made in haste with speed bar liquor and were no better than they had to be. "Why not use everything we've learned over these past few years and try to make it better?" he said. "Long Island Iced Tea is basically a Tom Collins. Some gin and a little lemon juice and some sugar and some soda. That's the basic formula."

To Morgenthaler, though, the recipe is only one of three things that matter when making drinks: the other two are ingredients and technique. So the bar uses Cointreau, "instead of cheap Triple Sec," and El Dorado Silver rum and Tanqueray gin. The usual virtuoso bar techniques of the craft cocktail world follow— the perfect, pebbled ice, the arctic temperature, the hard shake—and the result is a hell of a drink. It doesn't taste like a take on Long Island Iced Tea. It tastes like Long Island Iced Tea, but good. Will Morgenthaler make the next logical step and rehabilitate Sex on the Beach? Or the Kamikaze? I hope he does. The future is the past in cocktails as in so much else.
