O. M. G This drink is Amazing, nice to drink, and deadly!

Haad this drink on holiday in south africa, best cocktail ever but really really strong so beware

Great drink, looks better if you add the cola to the glass first and layer the shaken & strained ingredients on top

i had this drink on holiday!and i was completely smashed after having this drink!its nice too! just a lil strong

This is the mutts nuts. Nothing better than doing a BBQ and drinking these till the sun goes down. Awesome drink, not for the faint hearted

this drink is nice and the perfect cocktail to make you drunk without spendin too much

this is the perfect cocktail. I would have to dissagree with the comment about the coke on the bottom though, its great to have the right amount of coke ( like a glass coke bottle ) to give to the client to pour themselves, it is such a beautiful sight and smell as the dark encompasses the brilliant mixture below. this is the cocktail for me

Its best to fill a high-ball glass with ice, then add 2/3 cola (Not DIET) then slowly pour the mixture over the top ice cube you get an awesome black and white effect!

why wait till your on holiday or at a party? this drink is also perfect for quiet nights in, picnics, lunchbrakes, tuesdays. . . having done some failry extensive research into the subject, (which involved sampling cocktails from thousands of bars around the world) i can confirm that when made properly this is by far the greatest cocktail ever created. No word of a lie. Some people say its too strong, these people are idiots who are probably not worth talking to.

i once drank 7 of these in about a 2-3 hour span, and gosh if you want to get drunk fast, this is the drink .

its amazing that you can mix that many spirits in a drink and have such a balanced neutral and not overimposing flavour theres not many bars that dont serve this and its easy to understand whyfor me only a black russian or white cloud come close in the cocktail world !

by redstar alexander

i will like your cocktail ANd my self never drink but i love make cocktail,

by lalanjee sharma

I lurve this drink, i have drank it since my first bar at 17, now 25 and its the only one i ever order!

in my opinion yu must fill mosty with lemon juice (fresh is best) and then top up with coke!

very nice. . . when mape properly DO NOT put malabu in it! which most places seem to do! an ace drink and if made properly its a nice strong drink

Very lovely cocktail indeed. . . to give it an eye catching look try adding the coke to a glass filled wit ice about half way. . . then float the white spirits over the ice to layer. garnish with a slice of lemon and a sprig of mint :) . . . perfect cocktail, from the perfect barman!

by Jits (Bar Red Square - Croydon)

first ever alcoholic drink i tasted, sheer genius

My fave cocktail, I love it I love it I love it. It has all the right ingreadents to make any hoiliday fantasic

by Lynsey Aberdeen

A hidden punch. Just the way I like it.

This is an excellent drink, goes down very easily and makes you feel very mellow. Don't feel as if I have started my holidays until I sample my first Iced Tea

by Carole from Belfast

totaly love this drink. You should try this on a holiday in the sun. **** you will feel soooooooo fabulouse

This is an excellent drink but one for at home as having one made on a night out is a very expensive act (althought they do a very resonable one in the Hard Rock) avoid places that for some reason put Baileys in. Get some exact pours get a speed rack and get blasted!

this fucken drinkis the absolute ****,it will get you so messed up you wont be able to say long island. all hail the get ****** quick routine

The person whoever made this drink basically got bored and put together a few popular drinks and mixed em to create a boring cocktail, a waste of ingredients, use them on something better.

by Daniel Veasey

Most suited for summer but works at any kind of weather!

Got me drunk. . tastes good. . mmmmm

Hicupp. . . . i jus wanna sayy i luvv dish hicup drink man hicup i wers rery tastly mmm

This is a great drink. One of those easy down, 'I feel just fine' summer quenchers. I like adding a little bourbon for a slightly smokier kick.

by William McLaughlan, Glasgow

Awesome and refreshing - but tastes fresher without the tequila, especially if you leave the fresh lime until last and squeeze it into the top of the completed drink!

Great sundowner which can be topped up with Cola. Takes you on a ride, but the constant top up with cola sobers you up eventually. Not good for those on a calorie restricted diet - this is fatal! Diet Cola spoilts it.

Long Island Iced Tea

An unusual blend of vodka, gin, tequila, rum and orange liqueur with cola, the Long Island Iced Tea flavours of vanilla and lightly tannic wood make it taste a little like tea, but in fact they come from a mix of quality aged spirits.

The Long Island Iced Tea Recipe and Its Many Variations

  • 3 mins
  • Prep: 3 mins,
  • Cook: 0 mins
  • Yield: 1 serving

The Long Island Iced Tea is a popular mixed drink that, despite its name, contains no tea. It is one of those mixed drinks that tastes good going down but can quickly sneak up on you. It's best to take it easy with this one.

Get Ready to Pour.

The LIIT's ingredient list is long, but the recipe is very easy to remember: five white distilled spirits (including orange liqueur), a shot of sour mix, topped with cola and served over ice

Essentially, the majority of the bar's well goes into the drink and some drinkers love it while others despise it. Whatever your view of the Long Island Iced Tea is, it is a popular drink and one that every bartender should know.

What You'll Need

  • 1/2 ounce triple sec
  • 1/2 ounce light rum
  • 1/2 ounce gin
  • 1/2 ounce vodka
  • 1/2 ounce tequila
  • 1-ounce sour mix
  • 7 ounces Cola (or enough to top off a Collins glass)
  • Garnish: lemon wedge

How to Make It

  1. Pour the spirits and sour mix into a collins glass with ice.
  2. Stir well.
  3. Top the glass off with cola.
  4. Garnish with a lemon wedge.

Making a Better Long Island Iced Tea

The problem with the Long Island is that it is often made too strong. Many bartenders (professional and amateur alike) will over-pour the liquors. This not only makes the drink stronger, it also knocks the taste out of balance and reaches that point of too much booze (yes, there is such a thing).

On the other hand, if this drink is treated with respect and the person pouring keeps in mind that taste is more important than potency, the Long Island Iced Tea is a good drink.

Who Created the Long Island Iced Tea?

The story of the LIIT is as sordid as its ingredient list and the disputes in the stories may be clouded by the drink itself.

  • The 1970's credit for this concoction could go to Robert Bott, a bartender from Long Island.
  • The Prohibition-era story credits Charles Bishop, a 1930's moonshiner in (then dry) Tennessee.
  • Then there is the tale that the Long Island was an original drink of the T.G.I. Friday's franchise.

The truth is that we may never know the truth. It is entirely possible that Bishop made it and the drink was forgotten for a few decades until Bott remade it. At some point, the restaurant probably caught wind of it and claimed it as their own (it's been known to happen). Again, we just don't know.

Long Island Iced Tea Variations

Once you learn how to make the Long Island, you may want to try one of the many recipes that followed it. They are all very similar and constructed in the same manner, they simply replace an ingredient here or there.

Bartenders should know that a number of these drinks are just as popular as the Long Island. It will serve you well to at least have an understanding of what goes into each. They really are easy to remember if you do a little word association between the name and the ingredients.

  • Long Beach Tea - Everything in the Long Island, but the Cola is replaced with cranberry juice.
  • Miami Iced Tea - Peach schnapps is added to the Long Beach, the tequila is dropped, and lemon-lime soda adds a bit of sparkle.
  • Hawaiian Iced Tea - Using the Long Island recipe, top this drink with pineapple juice and skip the cola.
  • Electric Iced Tea - Blue curacao replaces the triple sec and the soda is switched out to lemon-lime soda. It's a brilliant blue drink.
  • Texas Tea - Simply add bourbon to the Long Island for an even more potent mix. Some people mistakenly refer to this as a Long Island, but whiskey is not included in the original (or accepted) recipe.
  • Raspberry Long Island Iced Tea - The original LIIT with raspberry rum and vodka and lemon-lime soda instead of cola.

Tip: The same theory can apply to any flavored spirits available. Pair like infusions (ie. vanilla vodka and rum with cola, passion fruit vodka and tequila with citrus soda) and don’t be afraid to use your own infusions. The possibilities are endless.

A few notes to help your memory:

  • Think “5 white spirits” then adapt the drinks to fit the descriptive name.
  • Sour mix is essential in most recipes.
  • Lemon-lime soda (7-Up, Sprite, etc.) is used in those with fruit.
  • The Long Beach and the Hawaiian are the only two without soda (I associate that with the “healthy" lifestyle of both locations).
  • The Miami is the only one to drop one of the 4 base liquors (in this case, tequila).

How Strong is the Long Island Iced Tea?

The Long Island is actually a deceptive cocktail. The six liquors make it seem like it would be a strong drink, but if you do the math, they add up to just 2 1/2 ounces total.

If we were to use 80-proof liquors, a 60-proof triple sec, and top it with 2 ounces of soda, then it would be a relatively mild 16% ABV (32 proof) drink. That is about the same as a strong Rum & Coke.

The Problem Is the Over Pour

That is not to say that the LIIT cannot be a strong drink. If we get a zealous bartender who pours 1 ounce of each of the spirits and tops it with 1 ounce of cola (remember that ice takes up a lot of room), the drink would be 21% ABV (42 proof).

To put this into perspective, that is close to the average Corpse Reviver, a cocktail known for "waking the dead." Consider, too, that those cocktails average about 4 ounces and we've estimated our Long Island to be double that. You're drinking the equivalent of two Corpse Revivers in an hour (or less)!

The math proves that the Long Island can be a strong drink. This is also not taking into account the effect that so many types of liquor can have on your body. And people wonder why this drink is notorious for creating the worst hangovers!

Long Island Iced Tea

Long Island Iced Teas are a favorite go-to drink at bars & restaurants across Long Island, and the globe - they're delicious, and pack quite the punch!

There's some dispute to the origins of the Long Island Iced Tea, however, many sources credit the drink's invention to Robert Butt, who first concocted this creative cocktail in 1972 during a bar tending contest. Butt was bar tending at Oak Beach Inn, located right here on Long Island in Oak Beach, when he participated in the now infamous cocktail creation contest where the Long Island Iced Tea was born. Butt's high alcohol concoction became an immediate hit, and by the mid-1970s, nearly every bar on Long Island began serving up this Summer treat.

The Long Island Iced Tea has a much higher alcohol concentration than most mixed drinks (approximately 22%). It is created by combining five different alcohols and a splash of Coke, and a splash of sour mix, and it's so popular is because it sure packs a punch!

The Classic Long Island Iced Tea

The Long Island Iced Tea is one of the top 5 requested cocktails in the world! An easy recipe, this drink is made with 5 spirits and actually tastes like sweet iced tea. Perfect way to celebrate summer!

Tennessee Orange Sweet Tea tastes like southern sweet tea with a hint of orange.

Serves 1 (or 2 small drinks)

1/2 ounce tequila

1/2 ounce white rum

1/2 ounce triple sec

1/2 ounce simple syrup

1 ounce lemon juice

That it is; that it is!

If you use lime juice instead of lemon you get a better color and a nicer bite also i prefer dark rum to white to give it a bit more sweet and then you don't need the simple syrup ; )

Love a good Long Island! This looks like a fantastic recipe; I'll have to try it the next time I'm craving a cocktail.

If there is no tea in the drink, why does it taste like iced tea?

I've had Long Island Iced tea, and it really does taste like iced tea! How can it, when it doesn't even contain tea?

Wow, I haven't had one of these since my 20's. Sounds fabulous!

With the inclusion of tequila, this is technically a Texas Tea. No less delicious, mind you.

Too much Coke, you only need a splash for color.

Years ago, my Mom heard me order this drink, and thinking it was really ice tea, ordered it too. It had been a long, hot, tiring day, she was thirsty, ordered another, and wasn't much of a drinker. 'nuf said. The only time I saw my Mom drunk and she was so funny! Going to make one for the memory!

I only use 1/3 of an ounce of the Liquors, The dark rum and only a splash of coke, no syrup and serve in an Iced Collins glass.

By the "World" I take it you mean the USA?

Never too much of anything..I would add some fruit on a small skewer. I Love Long Island Iced Tea and it does almost, taste like Sweet Tea but just a bit. mmmmmmmmm

A cooling, combination of four different white spirits, triple sec, lemon and lime, crowned with a splash of cola.

This infamous drink reached the height of its popularity in the early 1980s. Of the many stories surrounding its origin, perhaps the most credible attributes its creation to sometime in the late 1970s by Robert 'Rosebud' Butt at Oak Beach Inn in Babylon, New York. This area of New York State is known as ‘Long Island’ and the drink looks like iced tea disguising its contents – a fact that has many claiming its true origins lie with Prohibition.

Everyone's been knocked about by having a couple too many of these bad boys! The strength of the cocktail all depends on the size of the glass you are using but I would recommend the 2.5 shots as listed. Try mixing both lemon and lime juice instead with a splash of sugar syrup! The cola should have plenty of sugar already.

  1. Fill your hi-ball glass with ice
  2. Add all the ingredients with the lemon juice last
  3. Garnish with a piece of lemon

Great drink, refreshing and easy to drink !

I like it better without the Gin.

Depends on your taste.. Personally I like to use about 60mL..

What brands do you recommend fpr the tequila? I’ve never bought tequila before so I don’t know what’s good. Cheers.

Sorry I missed your comment until now, bit late I know! Look for 100% blue agave tequila, my go to ‘house’ tequila is El Jimador.. don’t spend too much if you are mixing it with coke in a Long Island Iced Tea… but if you are drinking it straight or mixing margarita’s and have more budget, get Herradura 🙂
