Is it time to get your lad out with a Margarita ?

'I would like to point out that Triple sec simply means- triple distilled. 'Triple Sec is a specific liqueur, one of the de Kuypers range. Orange curacao for cocktail mixing. A margarita made with Cointreau or Grand Marnier isn't really a margarita. Nice, but not a margarita.

Triple Sec is an orange flavoured spirit similar to Cointreau. Depsite hating Tequilla due to a night of too many slammers this isn't half bad.

Its better frozen and strawberry falvoured

by Cocktail lover

Fantastic but I used cointreau instead of triple sec!!

by Gorgeous Gran

Havnt tried it yet cuz i av no idea wat triple sec is! Can anyone help?

Tried the 321 mix - VERY nice, best one so far. Enjoy.

I like it 5:3 shots Tequila/Triple Sec and the juice of 5-6 fresh limes plus four ice cubes serves two. If you don't like it sour add Jose Cuervo Margarita Mix. NEVER use Roses cordial

This is one of the most sophisticated classic cocktails. It is refreshing yet has bite-delicious!!

Well' I tasted this Cocktail and kind of liked it and it's nice to taste the classic cocktails. . it ain't that great though. . .

How should I mix the ingredients in right proportion to make it more sour? Besides Margarita, which cocktail is sour in taste?

1 Part Triple-Sec 2 Parts TequillaAdd Roses Lime Cordial and then Lemon Juice or Lime Juice to taiste. Makes a great Margarita

This's the cocktail I like best. But I have always used 1oz Tequila, 1/2 cointreau, 1oz lime juice, 1/2oz sugar syrup. Let's try it.

really nice set up to joint me in summer light pool sunshine.

The female version that i know of was to use 2 part tequila, 1 part vodka, 2 part cointreau (more oragey), and 1 part lemon and lime juice. its less sharp and juss that little bit more colourful for the ladies. i still perfer the 3,2,1 combo though.

I agree with Ford Prefect-- the Margarita is the queen of cocktails. However, I have always used the ratio of 3,2,1. That is 3 parts Tequila, 2 parts Triple sec and 1 part Lime juice. I would like to point out that Triple sec simply means- triple distilled. Cointreau and Grand Marnier are good examples. I always use Cointreau.

If the Martini is the king of cocktails, then the Margarita is defently the queen. it is a great drink to strong and yet not to weak, it is great with a cigarette after lunch. or sitting on the beach. its taste is sour yet sweet. as the saying goes'drinking margaritas bangin sinoritas

by Forf Prefect

This version is very sharp and macho (but that's a good thing), up the tequila a bit and add sugar for a fem version or Cointrea in plase of TS with double the Tequila to fall over. Best to try all versions just to be sure :-) But rememember that Margarita mix is for people that eat white sliced bread.

a true classic. . . . . the bite and the punch says it all

The Margarita Cocktail: Tequila Shines in This Fresh Recipe

Everyone knows the Margarita, that refreshing drink and must-have summer cocktail that can be made in so many ways and take on so many personalities. The great thing about the original Margarita is that it's one of the easiest recipes to make from scratch.

Notice that there are only three ingredients required for the Margarita. There is no mystery and it's not complicated. When the tequila, triple sec, and lime are balanced, it is a very refreshing cocktail. This drink is far too easy and delicious to justify buying a bottled margarita mix.

There are three basic ways you can serve this cocktail: straight up (as in this recipe), on the rocks, or frozen. The next question is whether to rim your glass with salt, sugar or to leave it bare.

The possibilities are endless and, no, a margarita glass is not required.

What You'll Need

  • 1 1/2 ounces tequila
  • 1/2 ounce triple sec (Cointreau is recommended)
  • 1 ounce fresh lime juice
  • Lime wedge for garnish
  • Salt or sugar to rim the glass (optional)

How to Make It

  1. If desired, salt the rim of a chilled margarita glass.
  2. Pour the ingredients into a cocktail shaker with ice cubes.
  3. Shake well.
  4. Strain into the prepared glass with or without fresh ice.
  5. Garnish with the lime wedge.

More Tips for Making the Perfect Margarita

Choosing a good tequila is an essential key to creating a superior Margarita. It is the main ingredient and a cheap, low-quality tequila will only bring the drink down.

This recipe uses a bit more lime than triple sec though some people prefer to keep the two even. If you would like to make it a little sweeter, add a dash of simple syrup or agave nectar.

How Strong Is the Margarita?

Using the recipe above and assuming that the tequila is 80 proof, the Margarita is not what we would consider a low-proof cocktail. It would be around 27% ABV (54 proof). If you serve it on the rocks, it will dilute a bit with time.

Alternative Margarita Recipe:

This margarita recipe uses sour mix and is another good, fresh recipe that you may want to try. Sour mix is very easy to make from scratch and have at the ready so you can mix up as many margaritas as you need.

  • 1 1/2 ounces tequila
  • 1/2 ounce triple sec
  • Splash of lemon or lime juice
  • 3 ounces sour mix
  • Lime wedge for garnish
  • Salt or sugar to rim the glass (optional)

This is a great Magarita, it's NOT meant to be sweet. If you want sweet try a daquari. No body puts syrup in a Matini. Get over yourself if you don't like it.

  • I wouldn't change a thing, except I serve it in a traditional champagne coupe not the bathtub used in the picture.

  • This recipe brings Strong alcohol on the buds. This can be fine at times but I tempered with a generous pinch of brown sugar a tbsp of maple syrup and an ounce of water. Over ice the buds rallied happy for more

  • Just the way I like it! If you are looking for a sickly sweet, punchy margarita, this is not your recipe. This is the recipe my friend, a bartender in nice New Orleans bars, uses. He says no triple sec in margaritas and no pre made syrups. I find the citrus flavors bright and sophisticated like this and find no need for extra sweetness, but I think if you do, this is a good base recipe to sweeten to your taste. My friend swears you'll never get a hangover from this! ;)

  • This is a 'classic margarita'. Just like they make it from scratch down I'm Mex. I alter the recipe to 1-1.5 part Tequila, 1 part triple sec/cointreau , 1 part freshly squeezed lime juice. Seems to have a better balance of flavors and tastes more authentic to me. Cheers!

  • I think this recipe was horrible. Never will make it again. To much tequilla and not enough sweet. No one at party liked it. Was a huge waste of money and good tequila.

  • I like a little sweetness, too, such as 1 tablespoon of agave syrup. Can substitute Grand Marnier for the Cointreau, but DON'T use triple sec!

  • Tessaarlen's recipe is perfect. Strong, but perfect :). This recipe, as written, does not work. It needs some sweetness.

  • This is the real deal. The alcohol isn't hidden behind a bunch of frou-frou flavors and sweetness. That said, I do like it just a wee bit sweeter than this, so I add a little sugar. With that, it's my go-to recipe. The 2-1-1 proportions make it easy to remember and scale up as needed, too.

  • The perfect classic margarita that tastes like the real thing. I cant stand the nasty margarita mix with tons of gross ingredients. I made no substitutions and this is now the recipe that we use all the time. Quality tequila is a must.

  • This is the definitive margarita recipe. If you are an aficionado of this drink, this is the only recipe you will ever need. If you want to buy a $12 bottle of tequila, a $6 bottle of triple sec and think this recipe is for frozen margaritas, then you need to keep searching for a different recipe.

  • I've tried this and it's too astringent. Try this: juice 6 limes & 6 lemons & add to pitcher; make 1 cup simple syrup (1 cup sugar & 1 cup water, bring to boil then cool) add to pitcher; add 1/2 cup triple sec, add 1/4 cup orange juice. This is enough mix for 1 bottle of Sauza Gold Tequila (mix equal parts).

  • Why ruin a margarita with limeade?and Triple Sec is just a hangover waiting to happen. Try this: 1/8 cup of gave nectar diluted with 1/8 cup water. Why agave nectar? because it is a pure sugar - no hangover. 3/4 cup of 100% agave tequila (agave tequila is pure so nohangovers. 1/4 cup of cointreau (never use triple sec) 1/2 cup of freshly squeezed limes - not botled juice no limeade - just fresh limes. Mix together pour over ice, salt the rim of your favorite tequila glass and there you go. Enough for two.

  • Yikes, being a native Texas, I've had a few good margaritas. This is not one of them. Too much "doctoring" to make this worth drinking.

  • Can't make one Margarita. Must make pitcher and freeze over night. doesn't really freeze. One bottle tequila, (your choice brand) One can frozen Limeade plus one can of water or more. 2 cups Triple Sec or 2 cups Cointreau. Stir, of course, and freeze over night. Buy some Tequilla salt or course salt for rim. Serve in Margarita-salt rimmed glass moistened with fresh sliced limes.None better.

  • Perfect. This is a classic margarita. Delicious.

  • An excellent balance of sweet and tart. This is the perfect margarita recipe.

  • I liked this as a substitue for disgusting margarita mix! It was just the right amount of sweet. I used slightly less tequila though because the first two I made were too strong. I used triple sec because that was all I had on hand.

  • Too stiff - I had to add a 1/2 can of club soda to get this down. Then it was okay, but not worth the juicing all those limes. (I used triple sec instead of Cointrea).

  • Yum! Everything I am looking for in a Margarita: smooth & tasty.

  • Very easy to prepare. Tangy flavor; reminds me of Cabo San Lucas. Strong alcohol content.

  • YUMMY. This ratio is really good

  • I prefer Triple Sec to Cointreau in my Margaritas, it isn't as sweet.

  • Understanding that orange liqueur is part of the legendary margie, I have to concur with the guy at Tres Agaves that using simple sugar (no different than agave nectar, actually) is far superior in combo with 100% agave like Don Julio and fresh lime juice. By the way, Patron is awful tequila actually. Made from inferior agave and way too much neutral alcohol burn, compared to high end blancos and reposados like Don Julio and Cuervo Tradicional (the 100% blue agave imported from Mexico)!

    Perfect Margarita

    Ingredients (5)

    • Salt, for rimming the glass (optional)
    • Ice
    • 1 1/2 ounces tequila (blanco, 100 percent agave)
    • 1 ounce freshly squeezed lime juice
    • 1/2 ounce Cointreau (not Triple Sec)

Our former senior editor has a side job of advocating proper margarita-making. Following is the only way she thinks a margarita should be prepared. Serve it with either our Cumin Salt or our Cayenne Salt and your next party will be a big hit.

Special equipment: This citrus juicer won us over because of its efficiency and practical design.

What to buy: All self-respecting margaritas are made with only 100 percent agave tequila (we like to use the high-quality Cuervo 1800, Patrón Silver, Herradura, or Don Julio) and Cointreau.

This recipe was featured as part of our Build Your Own Burrito Bar story.

    What to buy

    Zulay Metal Citrus Press/Juicer

A manual citrus press is all you need for small amounts of juice. This one is sturdy metal that doesn't take up much space or require much force to get every last drop from your fruit.

    Instructions

    1. 1 If using salt, place in a shallow dish. Moisten the rim of a rocks glass with a dampened paper towel, then dip in salt.
    2. 2 Fill the glass with ice; add tequila, lime juice, and Cointreau; and stir a few times until chilled. Serve immediately.

    Classic Margarita Recipe

Our favorite version of the classic tequila cocktail. [Photograph: Vicky Wasik]

The perfect margarita is all about fresh, crisp flavors barely tempered by triple sec and sugar. After testing all the ratios, this is the one we reach for.

    • A good quality tequila needs no sugar to balance the acidity of lime juice beyond triple sec.
    • Cointreau makes for a balanced, smooth margarita without taking away from the tequila.

Note: This recipe works best with a high quality tequila. If you're using a budget brand that's a little harsh, swap the proportions for the Cointreau and lime juice and add 1/4 ounce simple syrup to each drink.

    • Yield: Makes 2 drinks
    • Active time: 5 minutes
    • Total time: 5 minutes

    Ingredients

    • Lime wedge, plus 2 lime wheels for garnish
    • 1 tablespoon coarse salt, for glass rims
    • 4 ounces high quality blanco tequila (see note above)
    • 2 ounces Cointreau
    • 1 1/2 ounces fresh juice from 2 limes

    Directions

Run lime wedge around the outer rims of two rocks glasses and dip rims in salt. Set aside.

In cocktail shaker, combine tequila, Cointreau, and lime juice. Fill with ice and shake until thoroughly chilled, about 15 seconds (the bottom of a metal shaker should frost over).

Fill glasses with fresh ice and strain margarita into both glasses. Garnish with lime wheels and serve.

The Best Way to Make a Margarita

Five ingredients. One damn fine drink.

Although its roots are deep—world traveler and drink god Charles H. Baker reported a concoction containing tequila, lime, and orange bitters as early as 1939, and the drink itself was around in the '40s—the margarita is really a child of the '70s. But since that time, it's been one of the ultimate go-to cocktails for summertime and, well, pretty much any other time, too.

The key to a great one is making sure to use good, 100 percent agave tequila (silver is most common, but añejo can add a dash of smokier flavor). Anything less and you'll have a subpar margarita that will give way to a world-class hangover.

    1. Chill a cocktail glass, and then rub its rim with lime juice and dip it in coarse salt.
    2. Add tequila, Cointreau, lime juice, and ice together in a cocktail shaker.
    3. Shake and then strain into the glass over ice.

For a slighter sweeter version, add agave syrup before shaking. And of course, if you prefer them frozen (though that's not the traditional way to make a margarita), simply add the ingredients to a blender and then blend until smooth.
