The mojito was born in Havana, Cuba and is a classic highball. Many variations of the drink abound, but this recipe calls for the five customary ingredients of mint, rum, powdered sugar, lime, and club soda. If you are throwing a Havana or Cuban theme party, plan on serving these fashionable yet traditional mojitos.
What You'll Need
- 4 mint leaves
- 1 lime (for juicing)
- 1 teaspoon powdered sugar
- 2 ounces white rum
- 2 ounces club soda
- 1 sprig of mint (for garnishing)
- crushed ice
How to Make It
Put the mint leaves into a Collins glass and squeeze the lime juice over them.
Add the powdered sugar and then muddle the mint, lime juice and sugar together. Add crushed ice.
Stir in the rum and top off with the club soda.
Garnish with a mint sprig.
Note: Yerba buena is the best variety of mint to use in this drink.
The Mojito: A Refreshing Rum Cocktail You Have to Try

- Yield: 1 Cocktail
The Mojito has risen in the ranks to become one of the most popular cocktails. It is a simple and delightful drink that should be on every drinker's list of cocktails that must be tasted.
As with many of the best cocktails, the Mojito is easy to make. It requires just a handful of ingredients, most of which are fresh and may even be right there in your kitchen. The Mojito is the perfect beginner's drink, even for those without a fully stocked bar.
Rum, mint, and lime are the essential elements for a great Mojito. The lime and mint should be fresh and the rum should be your favorite top-shelf light rum.
A muddler and a stirring spoon are the only tools required and in a matter of minutes, you will have one of the freshest cocktails imaginable.
What You'll Need
- 2 ounces light rum
- 2 teaspoons sugar
- 6-8 fresh mint leaves
- Splash club soda
- 1 lime cut in two halves
- Garnish: mint sprig
How to Make It
- Place the sugar, mint leaves, and a splash of club soda into a highball glass.
- Muddle well to dissolve the sugar and to release the flavor of the mint.
- Squeeze the juice from both halves of a lime into the glass, dropping one-half into the glass.
- Add the rum.
- Stir well.
- Fill the glass with ice cubes.
- Top with club soda.
- Garnish with the mint sprig.
More Tips for Making the Perfect Mojito
Rum is the only liquor used in the Mojito, so it is a critical element that will determine the final taste of the cocktail.
This is not the drink where you do not want to be a cheapskate. Choose a premium rum like Appleton Estate, Ron Matusalem, or Mount Gay.
While white rums are typically mixed into a Mojito, you may also consider a high-end aged rum. Stay away from spiced rums, though. The spices in the likes of Captain Morgan and Sailor Jerry contradict and detract from the freshness of the mint and lime.
If you like, feel free to use a splash of simple syrup instead of cane sugar. You may also want to use a raw sugar like demerara or turbinado to add a darker sweetness of the drink.
Club soda is the final element that requires a bit of advice. Sure, it is easy to stop by the market and choose just any old bottle of club soda, but once you try a boutique soda in your Mojito you will find that a quality soda makes a world of difference.
Fever-Tree and Q Drinks both make a fantastic club soda that was designed specifically for use in cocktails. If you want to get a little wild, you may also try one of the unique flavors from DRY Soda, either cucumber or lavender are great options for adding a little more flavor to a Mojito.
How Strong is the Mojito?
The Mojito is a surprisingly light cocktail. If made with an 80 proof rum and the finished drink is about 6 ounces, it weighs in at just around 13% ABV (26 proof).
The History of the Mojito
The Mojito originated in Cuba at a time when the quality of the rum was not what it is today. By adding a few simple ingredients to mask the undesirable aspects of the country's rum and make a more palatable drink.
During Prohibition, it became fashionable for Americans to escape to the island country to have a few drinks while soaking up the sun. It was during this time that the Mojito began to grab international attention. For regular visitors to Cuba, it became a popular drink and was second to the Daiquiri on Ernest Hemmingway's list of favorite cocktails.
Over the years the rum improved and the Mojito's fame spread immensely. Today it is one of the more fashionable tropical cocktails.

Mojito rezept cocktail
The name Mojito comes from the African word mojo which means ‘to place a little spell’, although the Mojito’s origins are Cuban not African.
The story of Cuba’s oldest cocktail dates back surprisingly to the mid 1580’s on board Francis Drake’s pirate ship where the crew doctor administered aguardiente, the fore runner of today’s rum, mixed with sugar, lime and mint as a medicinal cocktail. But it was not until the 1800’s with the growing popularity of rum which eventually replaced the aguardiente that the Mojito was born.
Despite its popularity among pirates, the Mojito was made famous in modern times due to American writer Ernest Hemingway who is known to have been a big fan and drank them at La Bodeguita del Medio in Havana as well as in Key West, Florida. In more modern time James Bond (aka Pierce Brosnan) drank one in ‘To Die Another Day’ which too was set in Cuba.

Our Tips for Making the Best Mojito
Make this for one or many, but whatever you do, don’t skip the fresh mint and freshly squeezed lime, they’re essential on this one.
You see, just before adding the rum, a cocktail muddler (or in our case, the end of a wooden spoon) is used to bash the mint and lime together. This helps to release oils from the fresh mint, making sure that your cocktail is full of flavor. Enjoy!

Classic Rum Mojito Cocktail Recipe
- PREP 10mins
- TOTAL 10mins
Make this for one or many, but whatever you do, don’t skip the fresh mint and freshly squeezed lime, they’re essential on this one.
You Will Need
1 ounce (2 tablespoons) freshly squeezed lime juice
2 teaspoons sugar
8 fresh mint leaves, plus more for garnish
2 ounces (1/4 cup) white rum
1 ounce (2 tablespoons) club soda
Lime slice for garnish
Directions
Add lime juice, sugar and eight mint leaves to a cocktail shaker. Use the end of a wooden spoon or cocktail muddler to bash (or muddle) the mint into the lime juice and sugar. This releases oils from the mint and helps the sugar dissolve into the lime juice.
Add rum, stir well then pour into a glass filled with ice, leaving about an inch of room then top with club soda. Garnish with extra mint leaves and a lime slice.
Adam and Joanne's Tips
- To make enough for four people follow these amounts: 1/2 cup freshly squeezed lime juice, 3 tablespoons sugar, 32 fresh mint leaves, 1 cup white rum, 4 cups ice, 1/2 cup club soda, and 4 lime slices for garnish.

Great recipe, by using lime juice as opposed to muddling lime, mint & sugar you avoid the bitter oils in the lime skin. Best mojito I’ve made from this recipe.
