Our Tips for Making the Best Mojito

Make this for one or many, but whatever you do, don’t skip the fresh mint and freshly squeezed lime, they’re essential on this one.

You see, just before adding the rum, a cocktail muddler (or in our case, the end of a wooden spoon) is used to bash the mint and lime together. This helps to release oils from the fresh mint, making sure that your cocktail is full of flavor. Enjoy!

Classic Rum Mojito Cocktail Recipe

  • PREP 10mins
  • TOTAL 10mins

Make this for one or many, but whatever you do, don’t skip the fresh mint and freshly squeezed lime, they’re essential on this one.

You Will Need

1 ounce (2 tablespoons) freshly squeezed lime juice

2 teaspoons sugar

8 fresh mint leaves, plus more for garnish

2 ounces (1/4 cup) white rum

1 ounce (2 tablespoons) club soda

Lime slice for garnish

Directions

Add lime juice, sugar and eight mint leaves to a cocktail shaker. Use the end of a wooden spoon or cocktail muddler to bash (or muddle) the mint into the lime juice and sugar. This releases oils from the mint and helps the sugar dissolve into the lime juice.

Add rum, stir well then pour into a glass filled with ice, leaving about an inch of room then top with club soda. Garnish with extra mint leaves and a lime slice.

Adam and Joanne's Tips

  • To make enough for four people follow these amounts: 1/2 cup freshly squeezed lime juice, 3 tablespoons sugar, 32 fresh mint leaves, 1 cup white rum, 4 cups ice, 1/2 cup club soda, and 4 lime slices for garnish.

Great recipe, by using lime juice as opposed to muddling lime, mint & sugar you avoid the bitter oils in the lime skin. Best mojito I’ve made from this recipe.

The Mojito: A Refreshing Rum Cocktail You Have to Try

  • 5 mins
  • Prep: 5 mins,
  • Cook: 0 mins
  • Yield: 1 Cocktail

The Mojito has risen in the ranks to become one of the most popular cocktails. It is a simple and delightful drink that should be on every drinker's list of cocktails that must be tasted.

As with many of the best cocktails, the Mojito is easy to make. It requires just a handful of ingredients, most of which are fresh and may even be right there in your kitchen. The Mojito is the perfect beginner's drink, even for those without a fully stocked bar.

Rum, mint, and lime are the essential elements for a great Mojito. The lime and mint should be fresh and the rum should be your favorite top-shelf light rum.

A muddler and a stirring spoon are the only tools required and in a matter of minutes, you will have one of the freshest cocktails imaginable.

What You'll Need

  • 2 ounces light rum
  • 2 teaspoons sugar
  • 6-8 fresh mint leaves
  • Splash club soda
  • 1 lime cut in two halves
  • Garnish: mint sprig

How to Make It

  1. Place the sugar, mint leaves, and a splash of club soda into a highball glass.
  2. Muddle well to dissolve the sugar and to release the flavor of the mint.
  3. Squeeze the juice from both halves of a lime into the glass, dropping one-half into the glass.
  4. Add the rum.
  5. Stir well.
  6. Fill the glass with ice cubes.
  7. Top with club soda.
  8. Garnish with the mint sprig.

More Tips for Making the Perfect Mojito

Rum is the only liquor used in the Mojito, so it is a critical element that will determine the final taste of the cocktail.

This is not the drink where you do not want to be a cheapskate. Choose a premium rum like Appleton Estate, Ron Matusalem, or Mount Gay.

While white rums are typically mixed into a Mojito, you may also consider a high-end aged rum. Stay away from spiced rums, though. The spices in the likes of Captain Morgan and Sailor Jerry contradict and detract from the freshness of the mint and lime.

If you like, feel free to use a splash of simple syrup instead of cane sugar. You may also want to use a raw sugar like demerara or turbinado to add a darker sweetness of the drink.

Club soda is the final element that requires a bit of advice. Sure, it is easy to stop by the market and choose just any old bottle of club soda, but once you try a boutique soda in your Mojito you will find that a quality soda makes a world of difference.

Fever-Tree and Q Drinks both make a fantastic club soda that was designed specifically for use in cocktails. If you want to get a little wild, you may also try one of the unique flavors from DRY Soda, either cucumber or lavender are great options for adding a little more flavor to a Mojito.

How Strong is the Mojito?

The Mojito is a surprisingly light cocktail. If made with an 80 proof rum and the finished drink is about 6 ounces, it weighs in at just around 13% ABV (26 proof).

The History of the Mojito

The Mojito originated in Cuba at a time when the quality of the rum was not what it is today. By adding a few simple ingredients to mask the undesirable aspects of the country's rum and make a more palatable drink.

During Prohibition, it became fashionable for Americans to escape to the island country to have a few drinks while soaking up the sun. It was during this time that the Mojito began to grab international attention. For regular visitors to Cuba, it became a popular drink and was second to the Daiquiri on Ernest Hemmingway's list of favorite cocktails.

Over the years the rum improved and the Mojito's fame spread immensely. Today it is one of the more fashionable tropical cocktails.

For a very detailed history of the Mojito and other great rum drinks, read Wayne Curtis' And a Bottle of Rum.

mojitos are amazing !! i suggest squeezing half a lime with a squeezer then put in the glass then using 2 tea spoons of CASTER sugar ! forget the lime wedges in the glass !! just not needed :D

by West ends 2nd best barman ;)

I love this drink!

i use 1/2 of a lime cut in 6 pieces 1or2or3 teaspoon brown!! sugar(it depends on how swit we want to be) and many spearmint!! sprigs not mint i think its much beter ,i squeeze them alltogether in a long fat glass then i fill the glass with broken ice allmost till top i use yellow rum( rum like havana 3 anjo that's what we have here in greece) or white rum allmost till it covers the ice and finally i fill the glash with soda till top. Try it i think this recipe rules;)

Had the urge to create 'mojitos' this afternoon so checked the ingredients and popped out to source them!! running short on limes now. . . . . would you suggest lemon as a replacement?? a fantastic drink we both agree!

I just simply love this drink.

Just returned from a holiday in Mauritius. They serve it there as a long cocktail drink with tonic water. That is awfull!!

my fav drink. . but many style of making mojito exsist

first tried this drink the apartment bar in belfast, gorgeous. tried it in greece and they made it with lemons, awful.

by liam from derry

Having just come back from Havana try adding one drop of angustura bitters. . . utterly superb.

The best mojitos are made with lots of mint in a sling glass with Santa Teresa or Bacardi oro dark rum. Also start off with muscovado sugar in the bottom of the glass and mix with gomme and the lime juice to make the perfect paste to start.

Please don't use Sprite or 7-up. Nasty. Sugar syrup is easy to come by in the mixer section of a good liquor store. Also, make sure you use spearmint leaves, not regular mint.

I love this drink. Try the Mojaita version of it.

I took cover at the very wet Vfestival last year in the barcardi tent and spent the after drinking mojito's - the barman was tasty but the drink was tastier.

Love it: stylish, refreshing and more-ish; good if you're not so keen on the sweet and sickly cocktails.

Had this drink at the El Floridita bar in Havana Cuba (Hemmingways bar). What a superb drink. Never had one as good since but quite a few close seconds.

Discovered this cocktail in Ibiza. The best white rum based drink ever!

Tried this at The Barut Lara Hotel in Turkey. Absolutely hooked and are having 8 friends round Sat night to give them a try.

go to Prince alfred pub on queensway and ask for miguel, an spanish bartender, he will make you a wonderful mojito. just tell him i recomended you and he'll make it a little bit more tasty. . .

Went to Cuba on holiday this year and had my first Mojito - what a fabulous drink, it lived up to every expectation. I have yet to make one at home but will follow the recipe that they used in all bars all over Cuba

We tried this drink in spain and loved it!We have also tried a variation of this

spiced rum, fresh mint, lime, crushed ice and ginger ale. So fresh and delightful

as a bartender in Edinburgh i find it hard to find good Mojito's, i strongly reccomend the Hard rock cafe though, something different.

I drink mojitos in Edinburgh (Scotland) and find them darn nice. . . however, last night in Glasgow I had a raspberry mojito. . . and i can strongly recommend trying this if you havent already.

Tried this drink for the first time in Miami at Bayside MarketPlace. Loved it. Had a couple before boarding our cruise ship. The Mojitos aboard the ship did not compare to the ones we had at Bayside. Glad we tried them first in Miami so we really know how good they are.

Must say for a perfect Mojito use sugar syrup. This brings out the oil in the mint leaves which gives you that sharper edge

2 sugar cubes, 1 white 1 brown(crush ed),50ml bacardi 8yr old,3/4 lime cut into 6 pieces,5 FRESH mint leaves finely chopped, muddle in boston add 4 big ice cubes then roll servein rocks glass with crushed ice. garnish mint sprig and lime circles. <--- Great Mojito

Adding soda water and serving it long transforms the best cocktail into one of the worst. For the perfect Mojito - serve short, over crushed ice, with white rum, not too much sugar and add a couple of drops of angostura bitters to the crushed ice at the top

Mojito - white rum, sprite, lime and mint. . . . . . . better than soda water and sugar!!Personal preference anyway - I make this drink for every BBQ i have and then some lolx

Great drink! Most demanded in bars nowadays. Wanna say sugar could be for better replaced with sugar sirop

Learnt about mojito in Blau Colonial Hotel Cyo Coco Cuba, where we got VERY good at drinking them! Your recipe seems to miss out one vital ingredient - ANGOSTURA bitters, Liber (the barman) always added 2 drops at the end of mixing, it changes the colour and the taste! Try it please. Floriditas bar in Havana (where the Daiquiri was 'invented' by Earnest Hemmingway) did the same, so it must be right!. Enjoy. PS where can you buy a mojito stick?

Made the drink myself after a holiday inPlaya de las Americas, Tenerife, 2 weeks ago but unfortunately did not taste the same!! Probably missed the sun and san.

by haider what does part means plz ?

Sir/Madam, Before giving my comments, I want to know that which type of Rum should we try! Because in Ingredient you have mentioned to use 2 part of WHITE RUM but in method you have mentioned to mix either DARK OR LIGHT RUM!! which Rum should I take??

by Anand Uplekar

I first tried this drink on my holiday in Prague recently,at the La Bodeguita Havana Club,I loved it. . . Fabulous. I will be trying to make some myself for my friends and family.

I hate rum. I love Mojito cocktails! I can't believe I waited until my last day in Cuba before I tried this drink. Not yet been able to find a bar in the UK that can do it quite as well as the Cubans though.

add strawberries to the mix for the perfect summer drink only use the 3 year old havana when adding strawberries

For a true 'Cuban' style mojita you have to use Havana Club rum - but this is difficult to get in the UK so it you know anyone visiting Cuba then get them to bring some back - and it's cheap - about £3 for a litre bottle. My case was full of the stuff!

by Nancy Wheeler

Try this with Bacardi 8year old if you can find it with a dash of angosturas bitters and crushed ice, the ultimate Mojito.

I first tasted this cocktail whilst siiting on a beach in cuba and it is by far now my favourate cocktail. even without the sun and the sand . . TRY IT !

Withot a doubt the most refreshing drink in the world. Had a pitcher of it in cuba libra, upper st, london. FANTASTIC

i liked this cocktail (mojito) its nice to drink this cocktail several times and from my experiance as a bartender . drink this cocktail and feel the air breezing beside you and remember me . . . .

Strong enough to peel paint off of the walls, yet *smooth* after the first one. They do catch up on you rather quickly! I got seriously effed up on these at Bongos Cuban Cafe @ Disneyworld- drank six of them in a 2. 5-hour period. Only stopped because they ran out of white rum. ---> Dark rum in these = "Yuck!"

the best cocktail in the world. So quintessentially latin. Shows why we westerners have no spirit. The best mojitos are at the bodeguita del medio in Havana. Tangy, syrupy and fizzy, wow!

by Nick Warring

I first drank this cocktail in a bar in Queenstown NZ in the company of 3 very good looking men. The perfect cocktail for the perfect night.

if you want a real mojito you have to go to the hotel nacional in cuba the best in the world estilo cubano

by james sheffield

Sun, Sea, Sitges and Mojito. I now have a garden full of mint !

Went out for mine and my girlfriends 2 year anniversary at Saltwater (Nottingham, UK). Tried the Mojito and loved it so much I had three. Came on today to find out how to make it.

I dreamt about the name Mojito the other night and the following day researched the ingredients and bought them in. . . What a fabulous, quenching experience. I used a famous white rum and it was perfect. It's now my favourite cocktail!

I would like to thank to staff of 'La Perla', an outstanding Teguilla bar in Maiden Lane, Covent Garden, London, for introducing me to this fantastic cocktail. Absolutely one of the best!

by Nicholas Finlay

C' mon. This is the best drink ever! This is such a refreshing drink. . . on a hot day, you can't go wrong with a cold mojito. TRUST ME. The mint cools your mouth down. . . it's great. I think I'm going to have one now.

Blueberry Mojito

North Carolina is the sixth largest producer of blueberries in the United States. Buy some fresh and make this refreshing drink that’s good and good for you.

Drink more blueberries! Packed with antioxidants, blueberries are considered a “super food.” Today, I’m going to show you how to make a “super cocktail” with these little sweet berries grown locally right here in North Carolina.

I get excited with the arrival of blueberry season and warmer weather. Blueberries are one of my favorite berries and the options are endless when it comes to preparing food and drinks with them: blueberry pies, blueberry cakes and blueberry lemonade are a few that come to mind.

Because of this little berry’s powerful antioxidants, I’m always finding myself trying to use blueberries in anything and everything I can. Since I have an abundance of mint growing in my herb garden during the summer months, mojitos are frequently on my spirits menu.

Adding blueberries to this classic Cuban cocktail gives it a sweet, fruity twist (with added health benefits!). Fresh or frozen blueberries can be used, but I prefer to use fresh blueberries straight from the patch or the farmers market if at all possible.

You’ll need to muddle fresh mint in a cocktail shaker with sugar to release the flavor of the mint. If you don’t have a muddler, the back of a wooden spoon will work just fine. It is important not to over-muddle the mint leaves as your mojito will taste bitter… just a few gentle twists will do.

What you’ll need for 2 blueberry mojitos:

  • 1 cup blueberries (extra blueberries for garnish, if desired)
  • 1 tablespoon granulated sugar
  • 8-10 fresh mint leaves
  • 2 tablespoons lime juice
  • 3 ounces white rum
  • Club Soda

Directions:

  • Puree blueberries in a blender or food processor until smooth, set aside.
  • Muddle sugar and mint in a cocktail shaker.
  • Add lime juice, rum and blueberry puree. Cover cocktail shaker and shake vigorously for at least 15 seconds.
  • In 2 tall cocktail glasses filled with ice, pour about 1/3 full with club soda.
  • Top with blueberry mixture and stir to combine. Garnish with additional mint and blueberries, if desired.

Excellent. I boiled the shrimp shells and drained for the 2 cups of water. I also will add a tsp of salt. I served over Fettuccini and warm crusty french bread. Yum!

  • Nice and simple, great for summer, but way too sweet. Next time: reduce the sugar by 25%, increase the rum, adjust club soda to taste.

  • Use FRESH lime juice, and HEAPING teaspoons of sugar to cut the acidity, or else it will be too acidic. Also, use a good quality light rum.

  • Great Drink, if you don't have superfine sugar just put regular sugar in the food processor and pulse for a minute.

  • This mojito recipe is fantastic! I have made this on multiple occasions for different crowds, and all have asked me for the recipe, that's not the say the recipe couldn't be improved. I have used unrefined cane sugar, although it takes longer to dissolve and the drink appears more amber-colored, and I've also used regular, granulated sugar when I couldn't get my hands on the superfine. I've also varied the amount of rum used. My conclusion: The drink is a bit sweet as is, so I prefer not to use "heaping" teaspoons, also the 1/4 cup rum is a good starting point to add more to taste if one wishes to do so.

  • This mojito recipe was good--but not the stellar recipe I was looking for. As other reviewers said, it was a bit too sweet. And this sweetness was the case even though I used regular granulated sugar and not all of it dissolved. I'll still have to search for the perfect mojito recipe.

  • Made this with coconut rum and extra Club Soda. Delish!

  • I am a huge fan of mojitos but have never made them at home. I tried this recipe last night but substituted agave nectar for the sugar and doubled the amount of club soda because after tasting it with only 1 oz. decided i like a little more pop and fizz in mine. Definitely a keeper that I will be making again and again.

  • Try a heavy splash of POM juice. Trust me. it's divine!

  • Instead of club soda, I used lime Perrier. nice touch!

  • I can never remember the correct proportions (a result of the mojitos? hee hee!), so this is my go-to recipe. I've started - and the Mr & I prefer - agave nectar to sugar or simple syrup, tho. Slightly less, or to taste. Adds a subtle lil somethin somethin and it mixes instantly into the lime juice & booze.

  • Nice! I had only regular granulated sugar, which didn't dissolve entirely, but it's plenty sweet (which tells me you could get away using less overall). I also added more club soda (probably another ounce). My first homemade cocktail (as part of a new year's resolution to drink more!). very pleased!

  • So good. I multiplied the recipe, by a lot :), they came out great. I will definitely make these again..hmm, maybe tonight.

  • fabulous recipe. be sure to stir the sugar until it is dissolved! This makes a world of difference. We found that we liked about 2 oz. of club soda per glass, instead of just 1. more bubbles!

  • Great mojito recipe! Instead of club soda I used proseco. amazing. Definitely recommend.

  • Nice, basic recipe- still prefer simple syrup over sugar, though.

  • I intend to live on these for the rest of the summer. LMAO Scagsville - and no one is going to ruin my fun either.

  • A truly excellent recipe. This was my first try at a Mojito and it was flawless. I served them in deep bowled, crystal water goblets. Looked like an underwater seascape! Lovely.

  • Such a fabulous recipe. I've shared it with family and friends..so easy and delicious.

  • Out of all the Mojito recipes out there, this is the top!

  • You get plenty of mint flavor by just tearing the mint leaves in half rather than crushing them as other recipes advise. You just get the flavor without drinking the leaves.

  • Great basic mojito recipe. This will be my new go-to recipe for mojitos (I've tried a few!). I like that I can control the sweetness by using club soda and sugar (as opposed to some recipes that use ginger ale or lemon-lime soda).
