The Best Cocktail Sauce Ever.
I’m pretty picky about my Cocktail Sauce. The bottled stuff just doesn’t cut it for me. Thankfully, I can have my Cocktail Sauce mixed up really quickly and even make more than I know we’ll need so that I have a little bit leftover.
It’s really good stuff, y’all.
Hence the name, “The Best Cocktail Sauce Ever.”
The other night we celebrated my my husband’s birthday. I pulled out all the stops making my husband’s favorite beef tenderloin with horsey sauce, company potatoes, and a huge salad. I even topped the meal off with my Southern Caramel Cake. I’d planned the meal of his dreams!
My family was all coming to supper and got to my house a little bit before everything was ready. I knew I needed something to tide us all over until supper was ready so I pulled out a bag of pre-cooked shrimp from the freezer and broiled them in the oven with garlic salt and butter. By the time they were finished, I had the cocktail sauce ready to go. My neice was just as excited about it as I was.
I love that girl.
We sat down, snacked on shrimp and cocktail sauce, and caught up with everything going on with her this year in high school. Boy, even though times change, some things stay the same – don’t they?
Anyway, back to the cocktail sauce.
You really should give it a try the next time you have shrimp, oysters, or the like.
Here’s how I make it.
- 2 cups ketchup
- 2 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce
- 1 tablespoon lemon juice
- 2 teaspoons horseradish (adjust to taste)
- Mix all ingredients together until well-combined.
- Keep refrigerated.
Now, grab a plate of shrimp and dig in.

Fantastic. Thank you
Enjoy it! Thanks!
I have made this many times and it is good. You can change it up a little by using Hintz chili sauce instead of ketchup.
Just like my Nanny used to make! I can never eat the bottled stuff. I actually take my own when we eat out!
How long will this last in the frig?
I made this the other night an it is divine! Best I have EVER tasted. Thank you!!
Great base recipe. I’m trying to standardize with recipes stuff that I typically do free hand. Found this and will haelp with that goal! This is how I make mine. Never buy the jar stuff (same with barbecue sauce). Would add that adding some hot sauce, cayenne or garlic chili sauce (to suit one’s taste) is a great way to add a bit of kick for palates that would enjoy such.
Thanks for providing this simple, wholesome and delicious recipe.

I you shrimp cocktail sauce, do you use fresh horseradish, jarred pickled or what? Then the brand. Also, ketchups taste different. Which do you use? Thanking you in advance.
Can’t wait to try this for our oyster roast this weekend! Do you buy fresh horseradish & grate it. I have the horseradish that comes in a small jar.
I found that this was not at all spicy enough. I used 2 tablespoons of horseradish and added some minced capers, about 1 tablespoon. I always make from scratch, but never used Worcestershire before. That was a nice twist, which I will do from now on.
Robin Hyde says
I agree, the basic recipe was fine but not even a bit hot, I like cocktail sauce that makes my nostrils flare. I added, and added, and added horseradish until it got a little kick.
I tweeted the recipe by adding a little mor lemon juice and twice as much horseradish

This classic cocktail sauce is a tangy, slightly spicy mixture of ketchup, prepared horseradish, lemon juice, and Tabasco sauce. Serve it with poached shrimp for a traditional shrimp cocktail or on briny oysters on the half shell.
Game plan: This recipe can be made up to 1 day ahead, covered, and refrigerated.
Basic Cocktail Sauce
Cocktail sauce is a common condiment served with chilled seafood. It's so easy to make it yourself that there is no reason to buy it at the store. Feel free to adjust the ingredients as needed (we like lots of Tabasco!)

I was pleasantly surprised at how good this is.

Sometimes the simplest recipes are the best. This recipe for basic cocktail sauce is the perfect accompaniment to seafood favorites like shrimp, calamari, crab, and so much more. The tabasco sauce is totally optional for those who prefer sauce with a kick to it. If preparing this for kids, or anyone who simply does not care for too much spice, feel free to leave it out and you will still have a flavorful sauce from the other ingredients.

this was a great basic recipe for me. i had no Tabasco sauce but use some chili powder and vinegar instead. also added some garlic and steak sauce. i like my cocktail sauce spicy. worked great. was very impressed.
I have been making my own sauce for years. Nothing store bought any more. I do add more horseradish for extra zip. Family expects this everytime we entertain.

Very easy and yummy
Just more proof that keeping it simple is the best way to go. This is a great sauce on its own, but can accommodate variations, too. This recipe tastes like the best quality sauces you would find in markets, but has better depth and finish, and compliments the food. Nicely.
loved it with tempura calamari!

This was so easy and good, I'll never buy cocktail sauce again! I added a dash of A-1 to give it a little richer flavor, and it turned out very fresh and tangy.
This is the best tasting cocktail sauce! I forgot to buy someone for a dinner party and in a panic I searched the net. I had all the ingredients for this on hand and OMG! The taste is just delicious!
So easy, and we had everything we needed on hand already. We had to add a little extra ketchup to thicken it. the lemon juice made it a little runny.
This is the perfect cocktail sauce recipe! Easy to make and tastes great!

Excellent and inexpensive to make!
This was a great sauce, especially in pinch! I had to make this for my mom because there wasn't any casoctail sauce at the store. However, I on;y used 2 tablespoons of of Lemon Juice and added 1 teaspoon of Lea and Perrins instead of tabasco sauce. It tasted great! :P
I found it a little to sweet for my taste. I added some extra Tabasco and some Lea & Perrins and a itty bitty dash of garlich powder and I liked it much more. but it was super fast.
Perfect recipe. Quick and easy. Very few ingredients which are widely available. And delicious. Far better than commercial products I've tasted.
I made this last night to serve with fried mussels, it was a fabulous choice! You don't get faster or tastier than this recipe.

Recipe: Classic Shrimp Cocktail Sauce
Never underestimate the power of a simple shrimp cocktail sauce to get a party going. Not only is this appetizer absolutely perfect with a dry martini, but guests will flock to the platter and sing your praises — all for a five-ingredient sauce made in 30 seconds from the contents of your condiment shelf.
The beauty of the cocktail sauce lies in its balance of ingredients: sweet ketchup, spicy horseradish and hot sauce, salty and umami-rich Worcestershire sauce, and a squeeze of sour lemon. Think of the recipe below as a jumping-off point — taste it and keep tweaking until you're happy with the flavors. Everyone's cocktail sauce is a little different.
One last note: Poaching the shrimp is traditional, certainly, but not by any means obligatory. Personally, I prefer to pan-fry the shrimp to give them a little color and roasted flavor — this is what I did for the gorgeous shrimp in these photos. If you're making a lot of shrimp for a crowd, I like the convenience of roasting them on a sheet pan.
Classic Shrimp Cocktail Sauce
2 tablespoons horseradish, plus more to taste
1 teaspoon lemon juice
1/2 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
1/2 teaspoon hot sauce
Whisk together all the ingredients in a bowl. Taste and add more horseradish or any of the other ingredients to suite your taste. When you're happy with the sauce, transfer it to a small serving bowl.
Cook the shrimp by poaching them in boiling water, pan-frying them on the stovetop, or roasting them in the oven until opaque. Arrange the shrimp around the cocktail sauce and serve hot or cold.
Recipe Notes
- Make-Ahead: The cocktail sauce can be made up to a week ahead and kept refrigerated. The shrimp can be cooked a day ahead and served cold.
