French Connection is a Smooth Cognac Cocktail Recipe

    • 3 mins
    • Prep: 3 mins,
    • Cook: 0 mins
    • Yield: 1 serving

The French Connection is a relatively simple and common mixed drink that makes a stunning after-dinner drink or nightcap. It is, quite simply, a slow-sipping drink made from a combination of cognac and amaretto and the two could not be better suited for one another.

The cognac adds warmth to the chilled drink and the flavor mixes nicely with a quality amaretto liqueur. Drinks as simple as this rely more on high-end spirits than those with more mixers. Do yourself a favor and choose a nice cognac and amaretto (e.g. Disaronno, Gozio).

    What You'll Need

    • 1 1/2 ounces cognac
    • 3/4 ounce amaretto liqueur

    How to Make It

    1. Build the ingredients in an old-fashioned glass filled with ice.
    2. Stir and serve.

3 Very Nice Cognacs for a French Connection

You do not need to spend a fortune or anywhere near $100 on a bottle of cognac for the French Connection. When we're talking about 'nice' cognac, that's a distinction that needs to be made because what seems reasonable to one person may not be reasonable to others.

Cognac is naturally a bit more expensive than other brandies, the provenance and terroir of the region add to the liquor's value.

However, there are some fantastic cognacs available that will not break the bank.

These three bottles are some of the best you will find for around $50 or less. You can also upgrade or downgrade within the brand as you see fit. All three companies produce a full range of cognac and they use the typical brandy ratings: VS, VSOP, and XO.

The abbreviations are listed in order of age and, therefore, price, so your VS is both younger and less expensive than the VSOP. Use this little bit of knowledge when choosing your sipping and cocktail cognacs and you will have no problems finding the right one for you.

    • Courvoisier VSOP - A very fine cognac at a reasonable price, this bottle of Courvoisier is a fantastic find and its peachy spice is nice against the amaretto. If using it, consider skipping the ice and simply enjoy a straight pour of the two spirits.
    • Camus VSOP - Cognac fans know this name, but many others don't and that is why it needs to be mentioned. This bottling has wonderful character and a fruity oak that is perfect for the French Connection.
    • Hennessy VS - This is the bargain of the lot and it is a perfect choice for any cognac cocktail. It is worth every penny and it is, hands down, the best budget-friendly cognac around.

How Strong Is the French Connection?

There is very little dilution in the French Connection and some drinkers prefer not to include the ice. That means that this brandy drink is just slightly below bottling strength, averaging about 30% ABV (60 proof) and that's okay.

Drinks like this and the famous B&B were not designed to get you drunk (though they will do the job if you have too many). They are meant to show off some of the best brandies in the world and the higher proof means that there is more flavor to enjoy. Sip this one straight as it was meant to be and enjoy every lingering minute of it.

    Paris-Inspired Cocktails

From the exuberant libations that came out of Paris in the roaring twenties (or les annees folles as they are known in France) to refined modern drinks such as a raspberry-cognac sparkler, we're in love with cocktails inspired by the City of Light.

The classic combination of champagne and orange juice—now a beloved brunch indulgence—was first popularized in Paris and London in the 1920s.

    Penny De Los Santos

This rosy-hued cocktail was a popular drink in 1920s Paris.

This cocktail of gin, brandy, and champagne was dubbed "French 75" after a World War I artillery piece.

This rousing brandy and vodka cocktail is named for Pepa Bonafe, a 1920s French silent film star.

St. Germain elderflower liqueur, gin, and White Lillet are mixed with grapefruit juice in an ethereal citrus drink giving a touch of class to any evening.

Inspired by Woody Allen's Midnight in Paris, this cocktail combines cognac with fresh raspberries and sparkling white wine.

Herbal liqueurs St. Germain and green Chartreuse add a touch of otherworldly magic to this cocktail inspired by the film Hugo, set in 1930s Paris.

Sweet and tangy, with the mild smokiness of pink peppercorns and the salty edge of black cured olives, this elaboration of a vodka martini is as grand and glamorous as the wide avenues of Paris.

Oscar-winning silent film The Artist lends understated sophistication to this original cocktail.

This intense potion is adapted from one served at parties by the French artist Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec.

Two French Connection Cocktails Brandy About

The French Connection cocktail pairs amaretto with brandy and drink recipes call for Cognac rather than Armagnac. Even though both of these brandies are connected to regions in France, Armagnac is rarely specified in cocktails (the D'Artagnan is an example of one that does).

Does Cocktail’s History Have Connections To The Book And Movie

The Godfather has strong ties to the French Connection as a book / movie and as a cocktail. In literature and film, both books were published in 1969 and became movies shortly afterwards, The French Connection* in 1971 and the first of the Godfather trilogy in 1972. Their storylines involving the criminal activities of gangsters in mob syndicates as a central theme is something they have in common with each other as well.

As cocktails, both are two part amaretto drink recipes and each is officially listed in the sweet after-dinner category by the IBA. Others include the Golden Dream and the Grasshopper.

So what’s the final tie that binds their histories together. The Godfather cocktail (Scotch instead of Cognac) was “created during the 1970s in the USA” according to the Disaronno website, makers of the Originale brand of Amaretto. Since both of these drink creations needed a name around that same time and shared so many other similarities, you make the connection.

Behind The Bar - How To Make The French Connection Cocktail At Home

    French Connection Cocktail:

Mix over cubes in an old fashioned glass. Or, just use one big ball of ice as pictured to delay drink dilution. Note: the International Bartender Association’s official formula is equal parts Cognac and amaretto.

    French Connection #2 Drink Recipe:

    • 1 ½ oz Cognac
    • ¾ oz Grand Marnier orange flavored brandy liqueur

Same preparation as the classic cocktail above. Just replace Italy in the original recipe with another shot of France.

This is one themed party your home bar could host with you as the hipster barback wearing your pork pie hat.

    References

    * - The French Connection movie starred Gene Hackman as detective Jimmy “Popeye” Doyle who never went anywhere without his hipster styled pork pie hat (like a Fedora with a narrower brim and flat top that’s dished in a circle). The film had one of the greatest car chases in movie history and was the first R-rated Academy Award winner for best picture after the rating system was introduced. The French Connection definitely deserves to have a hip drink named after it. Maybe even two.
