Ginger Beer and Ginger Ale Cocktail Recipes

Ginger ale and ginger beer add a refreshing spice to mixed drinks

Ginger ale, and its spicier, fermented cousin ginger beer, are ideal cocktail mixers. The effervescence lightens up a summery highball, while the ginger's bite tames spirits. We've rounded up our favorite ginger ale and ginger beer cocktail recipes.

Ginger ale and ginger beer can both be purchased, but it's fun and easy to make them on your own. For ginger ale, simply make a syrup out of water, ginger, sugar, and a dash of black peppercorns, then mix it with soda water. To make ginger beer, brew up a similar ginger mixture and add in spices and champagne yeast. Strain the mixture, bottle it, and after a day of fermentation you have your very own ginger beer!

Whether you make or buy, you've got delicious recipes to try. The Moscow Mule is a classic mix of ginger beer and vodka. If you steep the vodka with lemongrass and grapefruit to make aquavit then you have a variation called a Swedish Mule, while swapping the vodka out for gin and adding a little mint makes a Gin-Gin Mule.

The Dark 'N Stormy is another classic ginger beer cocktail, with black rum and ginger beer swirling together like storm clouds. The Black and Stormy is a variation that kicks up the spice with ginger liqueur.

For a summertime drink for your next cookout, mix together a pitcher of our Strawberry Pimm's Cup with ginger ale and kaffir lime leaves.

Check out all of our favorite ginger ale and ginger beer cocktail recipes, plus recipes for homemade ginger beer and ginger syrup!

Any of these cocktails can be made with store-bought ginger beer. But if you want to go the extra mile, you can brew your own from scratch.

Not quite up to brewing your own ginger beer? An easier option is to make your own ginger ale by cooking up a batch of this ginger syrup and mixing it with soda water.

Inspired by our list of Friday cocktails, bartender Michael Neff noticed that bitter flavors were prominent, as were fizzy drinks made with fresh fruit and herbs. To that end, he created a modified Pimm's Cup, using Cynar to add a bit more bitter tang and ginger beer for spice. Fresh fruit and herbs round out the (almost) traditional summer refresher.

By trademark, this Bermudan combination of rum and ginger beer requires Gosling's Black Seal Rum; similar drinks with names like dark 'n foggy or light 'n stormy use other rums.

A refreshing marriage between a Tom Collins and a Dark n' Stormy, this lime and ginger beer-spiked gin cocktail has an intriguing herbal undertone thanks to Amaro Abano, a zesty Italian digestif with notes of bitter orange, cardamom, and white pepper.

This vodka-and–ginger beer libation is traditionally served in a copper mug.

In this Moscow Mule variation, vodka is infused with lemongrass and grapefruit to make aquavit.

This Moscow Mule variation is made with gin and mint.

Black-currant-flavored crème de cassis adds fruity dimension and a lovely pink hue to this ginger beer and tequila cocktail from the 1940s.

This variation on the El Diablo swaps crème de cassis for black currant jam and earthy honey.

Martin Cate of Smuggler's Cove in San Francisco combines Chartreuse and ginger ale in this refreshing tropical drink.

Spiced rum and fiery ginger beer combine with tart cranberry juice in this flavorful cool-weather cocktail.

This sweet-tart wine punch was invented by members of the Junior League of Houston book club in the 1970s.

Vodka, ginger beer, and muddled pear make for a tart and refreshing cocktail perfect for sipping on a cool fall evening.

This version of a classic tiki drink mixes two kinds of rum with a variety of fruit juices and syrups.

A twist on the British classic, this summer cooler takes on spicy, herbal notes from Kaffir lime leaves, while strawberries lend sweet balance to the pleasingly bitter liqueur. Get the recipe for Strawberry Pimm's Cup »

This take on the Gin Fizz is peppery and dry with a terrific zing.

Thinly sliced ginger – 3 to 4 slices

    50ml Gordon's® gin

    Dash of Angostura Bitters

    2 teaspoons of caster sugar

    2 squeezes of lemon

    1.9 units of alcohol

Slightly bruise the sliced ginger in the bottom of a highball glass (you can use the end of a rolling pin), add your Gordon's gin and sugar, mix with the ginger, and then add lots of cubed ice. Add a dash of Angostura Bitters, 2 squeezes of lemon and top up with ginger ale. Garnish the cocktail with a slice of ginger or lime.

    MAY WE SUGGEST.

A cocktail with a festive feel, that's equally welcome on a warm summer's afternoon.

Long hot afternoons in the garden are often better shared, just like Gordon's Elderflower Cooler.

Simply sensational. A cocktail that's sure to wow guests.

    Gin and Ginger Cocktail

This recipe came about yesterday as I was prepping to watch Game 7 of the World Series. Game sevens make me really nervous. Be it baseball, hockey, or basketball, when everything is hanging on one game, I can’t help but feel stressed out. That’s where my gin and tonic was supposed help. I should have saw it as a sign when I couldn’t find any tonic water in the pantry.

Ginger beer is one fizzy beverage I never run out of. Whenever I see a new or different ginger beer product in stores, you know I’m buying it. Ginger beer tastes great with vodka (Moscow Mule), perfect with rum (Dark and Stormy), and fantastic with bourbon (Kentucky Mule). It’s only natural that I should try it with gin.

I had no idea that gin and ginger would make such an amazing couple. This resulting cocktail is fresh, bright and refreshing. It’s like a gin and tonic with a little extra kick.

This gin and ginger was the just the drink I needed to soothe the heartache of the game. Mind you, it was a great game until the Giants won it all. Oh well. No biggie. Nothing a little Taylor Swift can’t fix. After the game ended I played T.Swift’s new album for the umpteenth time this week and danced it out…with a gin and ginger cocktail in hand, of course.

Tequila and Ginger Ale: A Cocktail Dice Special

Tequila and ginger ale is a surprisingly delicious combination. Especially with lime and salt. Think of this as the ginger-lover’s margarita.

Tequila and ginger ale is a surprisingly delicious combination. Especially with lime and salt. Think of this as the ginger-lover’s margarita.Even with my deep, deep love for all things ginger, I’m pretty sure that I would never have added it to tequila and called it a day. But these Cocktail Dice demanded it!

My friend Jeanee Ledoux is a crafty renaissance woman. She wrote a craft book in 2005, sold her vintage-style handmade jewelry for years, and she now creates beautiful collaborative pieces with other superstars from the crafty community. If you love Mid Century Modern, I can’t recommend her site enough.

In between all of those things, Jeanee had a sweet little store here in Atlanta – and online – where she sold a curated collection of other crafter’s work. That last venture is where I discovered Cocktail Dice by Leafcutter Designs.

When I had my first book signing at ICE Weekly here in Atlanta, Jeanee had a table next to mine, and we got to gabbing about sales, cooking, and of course about cocktails. She sent me home that evening with my very own set of cocktail dice, and today’s tequila and ginger ale is thanks to my first roll.

    Here’s how these babies work.

There are six ingredient dice, and you roll those first. Of the six, you can eliminate two. Thank goodness, because all six of these would have been pretty disgusting:

I actually think that grapefruit instead of lime would have been lovely, but I had limes in the fridge and no grapefruits. Plus, I totally already have a grapefruit margarita in my archives. Those dice really know me!

Once you’ve got your four ingredients, you roll the prep dice. They tell you how to prepare your cocktail and what glass to serve it in. Mine was stirred in a collins glass.

I will tell you a secret: I don’t own a collins glass. They’re tall, so I used a tall glass from my pantry. We keep it fancy around here.

    Tequila and Ginger Ale

Tequila and ginger ale is a surprisingly delicious combination. Especially with lime and salt. Think of this as the ginger-lover's margarita.

    Ingredients

    • salt
    • 1 ounce of gold tequila
    • 1/2 of a fresh lime cut in half, so you have two quarters
    • ice
    • ginger ale
    • extra small slice of lime for garnish

    Reader Interactions

    Ya’ll ain’t right…but I like your direction. I go that way sometimes myself…

Please confess to how many times you rolled before getting ginger ale, you ginger maniac! Just kidding, hee hee. Thanks for writing about my shop, sweet lady!

    Becky Striepe says

Those dice just knew me! Haha
