Amaretto Joy Milkshake Recipe

A lightly-spiked take on the classic Almond Joy candy bar in milkshake form. Toasted coconut flakes and rich coconut cream add tropical flavor, while amaretto liqueur adds sweetness and a little bit of booze.

  • Toasted coconut flakes blended right into the shake mean plenty of real coconut flavor.
  • An ample base of chocolate ice cream makes for a thick, creamy shake.
  • Chilling the amaretto in advance keeps this milkshake extra chilly.

Note: Allow the ice cream to soften on the counter for 5 minutes before scooping.

  • Yield: makes 2 milkshakes
  • Active time: 5 minutes
  • Total time: 5 minutes

Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 ounces amaretto liqueur, such as Disaronno
  • 3/4 cup unsweetened coconut flakes
  • 3 tablespoons unsweetened coconut cream, such as Native Forest Brand
  • 3 cups chocolate ice cream, such as Häagen-Dazs
  • Finely chopped toasted almonds, for garnish
  • Whipped cream, for garnish
  • Chocolate syrup

Directions

Several hours before making the drink, place bottle of amaretto in the freezer to chill.

Preheat oven or toaster oven to 325°F. Add coconut flakes to a sheet pan. Toast, watching carefully, until fragrant and just slightly beginning to brown, about 5 minutes. Set aside.

Reserve 3 tablespoons of coconut flakes for garnish and add the rest to a blender with the amaretto and coconut cream. Blend on high speed until smooth, scraping the sides as needed. There may still be tiny pieces of coconut visible, but they will be very small.

Add ice cream and pulse a few times, then blend until completely smooth, about 30 seconds.

Drizzle the inside of two glasses with chocolate syrup. Divide the milkshake between glasses. Top with whipped cream, the reserved toasted coconut, and toasted almonds.

Amaretto

Amaretto is a popular almond-flavoured liqueur, originating from Italy. It is traditionally made from a base of apricots or almond pits. The two most prominent brands of Amaretto are Disaronno Originale and Lazzaroni Amaretto.

Apart from its use as a drink, Amaretto is often used in cooking and is particularly famous for its role in the classic Italian dessert Tiramisu.

Amaretto is the main ingredient in a wide range of cocktails, including: the Godfather, Flaming Dr.Pepper and the ever-popular Alabama Slammer.

Amaretto Liqueur History

Understanding Amaretto: An Italian Treasure

You may find it hard to believe that importation of amaretto liqueur to the United States did not occur until the 1960's. The almond-flavored cordial quickly became a hit in cocktails and food preparation. By the 1980's, it was second in sales only to Kahlua. It's popular on its own, especially as a dessert drink but it also works as a great mixer. Many people have been known to add it to their coffee.

While it's known that the drink was made in Italy pinning down its exact origin story can be tricky. Two different families claim responsibility for the cordial with both having equally interesting stories to back up their claim. Before trying one of the many, learn a little bit more about it and how to use it.

What is Amaretto?

Amaretto is a liqueur with an almond flavor, but surprisingly, it may or may not contain almonds. The standard base of the liqueur is primarily made from either apricot pits or almonds or both. The drink like many other alcohols may contain any number of added spices and flavorings. The original version was made in Saronno, Italy. Amaretto is Italian for "a little bitter."

Amaretto History

The Lazzaroni family of Saronno, Italy, claims the title as the inventors of amaretto. They invented the Lazzaroni amaretto cookies around 1786 for the King of the region. Then in 1851, they created the Amaretto Liqueur, which consisted of an infusion of their cookies with a little caramel for color.

Uncommon Cooking Uses for Amaretto

While amaretto cookies are probably the most famous dish made with this cordial it's actually got many uses in the kitchen. If you enjoy it's bitter slightly nutty flavor amaretto can actually make a great addition to many dishes that you wouldn't necessarily expect. You can add it to pancake batter to make the flavors richer. While many people like to pair amaretto with dessert you can also use it in many desserts as well! It makes a wonderful addition to ice cream and is a common ingredient found in tiramisu cakes. Pouring just a little in your whip cream will give any side a nice rich nutty flavor. Some chefs will use it to add a touch of an almond kick to savory meals like poultry and fish. For those who love the flavor but can't have the alcohol, amaretto aroma makes for a wonderful booze free substitution.

    The Best Cocktails with Kahlua

If you want an easy way to add a boozy mocha flavor to cocktails, ice cream, cakes or cheesecakes, look no further than Kahlua. This coffee-flavored, rum-based liqueur from Mexico is actually made from coffee beans, giving you a boost of energy while sweetening a drink.

Here are five delicious cocktails with Kahlua:

    • Mudslide: This one may be more dessert than cocktail. The Mudslide is a frozen cocktail combination of vodka, Kahlua and Baileys, blended until smooth. To make it even sweeter, add some vanilla ice cream. See recipe
    • Kahlua Espresso Martini: For the true coffee lover, this cocktail includes freshly brewed espresso. The Kahlua adds some sweetness to the coffee and the vodka packs a punch. See recipe
    • The Revolver: If you like bourbon, this cocktail is for you. The Revolver showcases the bold flavor of whiskey up front, then rounds out the bite with the coffee flavor from Kahlua. See recipe
    • B-52: Ok, this isn’t really a cocktail, but it was too good to leave out. This layered shot includes Kahlua, Baileys, and Grand Marnier. Because each liqueur is a different density, each layer remains separate. Start the shot with the fruity Grand Marnier and end with a chocolatey, coffee flavor. See recipe
    • White Russian: And, we can’t forget the classic Kahlua cocktail, The White Russian. It seriously tastes like a grownup chocolate milk, but with a kick thanks to the Kahlua and vodka. If you haven’t tried the signature cocktail of “The Dude,” it’s time. See recipe.

The perfect pairing for any of these cocktails? Milk chocolates filled with Kahlua.
