Cocktail Menu
It’s Happy Hour! Peruse our menu of all (or at least most) readily available Cocktail Drum Kits on the market. Whether you wish to sit or stand, our guide is the best place to start your search for the ideal Cocktail Drum Kit for your specific needs. May we recommend enjoying a dry Martini, Marguerita, or maybe a Vodka Tonic while checking out or menu? Listed in no particular order to comply with generally accepted Happy Hour de-regulations.
Tama Silverstar Cocktail-Jam Kit
Available in Indigo Sparkle (pictured), Vintage Burgundy Sparkle or Chameleon Sparkle, The Cocktail-Jam Kit from Tama blends a high-tech flair with vintage styling. Separating the low tom from the bass is a nifty touch providing added adjust-ability. We suspect the “pat-pending” statement is in regards to this feature, but is as of yet not confirmed. The rods connecting the two certainly provide ample opportunities for clamping on just about anything you wish to add, eliminating the need for clutter-some stands. The US$833 List price includes 6″x16″ bass drum, 5.5″x14″ floor tom, 5″x10″ tom tom , 5″x12″ snare drum, drum pedal, drum bag, and hardware bag. Commonly advertised for around $500 A cymbal mounting attachment kit is available as an extra option (pictured).

As availability in specialized music stores is limited, it may not be a pro’s first choice. List price is US$460.
We have not been able to find a website for GP percussion.
DW Collector’s Series Cocktail Kit
Likely the most customizable Cocktail Kit on the market, with all of DW’s Finishes, Shell Materials, Hardware Colours and Shell Sizes available. Combining many of DW’s patented innovations into one unique, travel-friendly set and utilizing multiple DogBone® clamps, the kit can be easily transformed into almost any configuration imaginable. DW’s outstanding reputation is certainly reflected in the list price of roughly US$4,500 which includes a bigger than usual 18″ x 16″ bass drum, the unusual 18″ x 8″ “woofer tom” hovering over the bass, two toms, 12″ x 6″ and 12″ x 5″ and snare, as well as a “sidekick” version of the DW5000 bass pedal.
Peace Manhattan Kit
One of the more well known Cocktail Kits, the Peace Manhattan is available in eight finishes and a couple of configurations. The 14X18 bass drum is separated from the snare with a “sound-off” pad. The 10″ tom and two cymbal arms are included in the US$1,400 list price for the lacquered finish version. The kit also comes with the reverse cam bass pedal which attaches to the legs. Additional toms are available.
Trixon Cocktail Kits
Trixon Drums USA offers three lines of Cocktail Kits, made with birch shells, in a huge range of beautiful lacquer and wrap finishes. The “Cocktail” Series, features an 8″ by 5.5″ “Popcorn” Snare, 10″ by 5.5″ Tom and a traditional 15″ by 25″ Bass / Floor Tom. The “Cocktail Elite” Series seems to have the same specifications, while the “Vertikalen” Series mounts a separate snare above the bass drum. List prices for the Cocktail and Cocktail Elite versions hover around US$1,000 depending on configuration and Street prices begin in the modest US$300 range. The “Vertikalen” Series lists just a tad over the US$1,000 mark and retails for in the US$500-700 range.
Trixon Cocktail Elite
Gretsch Brooklyn Cocktail
Gretsch offers a variety of configurations of Cocktail Drum Kits. Our sample shown here is from the Brooklyn series, with six-ply Maple/Poplar shells. Sizes are 14 X 24 Bass and Tom in one shell coupled with an 8 X 6 Tom and a 10 X 6 Snare. The use of 30 degree bearing edges and silver coloured sealer is a neat touch that was once present on all Gretsch Kits. The Cocktail kit as pictured is sold as a shell pack with a suggested list price of around US$ 3,500, and street prices hovering just under US$ 2,800. Available in four stunning finishes including the pictured “Satin Natural”.
Billy Blast Happy Hour Cocktail Kits
Featuring a 16″x24″ Bass/Tom, 12″x6″ Snare Drum, 10″x6″ Rack Tom and a 12″x6″ Rack Tom. All Happy Hour Kits come with a patented Rail System for installing the kick pedal (Not included but available as an extra). The Tom and Snare mounts are totally adjustable. The tom and bass are latched together allowing for quick detachment to pack the entire kit inside. The Happy Hour comes in a plethora of finishes ranging from traditional wraps to some highly unusual designs. Pricing is around US$1,000 for the kit pictured. It seems they are only available directly from Billy Blast Drums.
Stauffer Percussion Cocktail Kits
Offering three different varieties of cocktail kits ranging from US$1300 for the “Deluxe” to US$1,750 for the “convertible” which as the name implies also converts to a Bop kit. They all feature 8-ply maple shells with 22 finish options! The deluxe kit comes complete with the 16″x24″ Cocktail Drum, 10″x6″ Snare Drum,10″x8″ Tom, Gibraltar Cymbal Boom Arm, Gibraltar Boom Hi-Hat Mount, Gibraltar 9611DC Reversed Pedal, Mini-Gig Rug and Completely interchangeable mounts for unlimited set-up options. Also offered is the “Nester” version at US$1,400, which of course offers the greatest portability in the range.
Drums & Percussion
If you choose to venture beyond the traditional acoustic drum set, the variety here will reward you for it. One great way to expand your percussion options is with an electronic drum kit, which gives you the opportunity to program any samples you want into the sound module. That means you get not only a huge range of natural drum sounds, but also the ability to queue up virtually any other effect you want. As well as electronic drums, there are plenty of world percussion options here for you to peruse. Those range from hand drums like the cajon and djembe to all kinds of distinctive instruments such as tambourines, chimes and, of course, the iconic cowbell.

Comments about Silverstar Cocktail-Jam 4-Piece Kit with Pedal :
I bought this kit for its portability and the sturdiness of the hardware.
I was willing to compromise a lot of things for that reason.
I was a little dubious about a 12x5 snare.
I was pleasantly surprised by it. Once I got it tuned and damped just right.
I used a remo ambassador coated on it with just a small damping pad on the underside of batter head. I found this drum is easy to over damp.
Very sturdy/solid, this kit goes from bag to ready in about 8 minutes could do in 4 if I rushed.
This drum really has a neat sound and is quite versatile. I used a remo coated pinstripe on it.
Bass drum pedal:
This pedal is really easy and due to gravity helping you quite quick on the bounce.
Bass Drum: bass drum has a surprising amount of bump for its size and depth.
also sound is omni directional due to its configuration which is nice when playing in resturants without regular stages.
It really shines in lower volume venues.
I was surprised how comfortable this kit was to play it doesn't look that way but it is.
The kit a hihat stand, a throne and your in business.
A little more expensive than the ?uestlove or other jungle kits but factor in cases and hardware and no snare stand needed it's about the same money.
I almost always use 16"-18" bass drums now anyway so I was used to sound.
that said it took me quite a while to get the tuning and damping right and you really have to have the floor tom mounted above it to make it sound full. In a big room it loses steam quickly.
Bass drum Pedal bracket:
A stupid little thing but the bracket does not lock to bass drum legs which makes moving after assembly a 2 person job. 2 bolts would have cured this.
I replaced all the heads except the bass drum head right away.
To small to fit hihat and throne. I usually use it as a sub bag to go into bigger hardware bag.
This is a superb kit for the working musician, student or the space limited drummer.
It sounds really good it's just not got the rolling thunder of that vista lite ludwig kit with the 26" bass drum. But I can barely remember the last time I got to play a gig like that and get paid to. In the new reality of smaller clubs and lower volume venues this kit works well. I've done a few gigs with it and no complaints from anyone. And quite a few compliments and weird ?.'s about it.
Also I got the green which almost looks black which suited me since I was looking for something lower key.
Nothing in the bad colum warrants making this guy less than 5 stars.
And I can actually pack it on the back of my motorcycle for cheap transport !

Comments about Silverstar Cocktail-Jam 4-Piece Kit with Pedal :
I play in a 3 piece band that does small venues/bars/clubs and this kit is perfect in size and volume without sacrificing sound and Tama quality. I did replace all the heads as that was one of the recommendations on several online reviews. The Tama heads are okay but I used Evans 360s. Be careful if you replace the bass drum head, a bass drum head will not fit properly so use a 16" tom head instead if you're replacing it. Hardware is awesome. My advice, avoid the Tama add-on hardware for this kit and shop around for the hardware that will suit your needs. I play it standing up right now and I'm tall and gangly so I used a closed hi-hat arm, a cymbal arm and a percussion clamp for a jam block.

Comments about Silverstar Cocktail-Jam 4-Piece Kit with Pedal :
Great quality and value. It will take a little experimentation with the sound of the heads. I will change the heads but you can get good sound by using remo dampening rings. an inexpensive method. I like the adjustments and variations that are possible I will have to get used to the pedal placement. I am used to stretching my leg out and with this set up I am closer to the set. This is a minor thing. Overall, its a great set up for the money and portability is fantastic! I think you will be pleased.

Cocktail drumset
Drum! Magazine, Vol.6, Issue 2, March/April 1997
World War II had only been over for a couple of years. Yet, once again the streets of the world became an unsafe hang for anybody's daughter. Thousands of drummers who had previously been in the armed forces were once again turned loose to practice their profession. The popularity of American Big Band swing jazz had spread throughout the planet by allied troops listening to armed forces radio.
Gene Krupa was the man, and his influence probably doubled the number of people who wanted to drum and play with a band by the end of the war. With so many new and old drummers (and other musicians) looking for work - coupled with a different economic situation (more workers than jobs) - many of the big bands began to fragment into smaller dance bands, quintets, quartets and trios.
Out of this uncertain time of experimentation emerged a new form of jazz music, centered around a smaller group of players utilizing a more open, improvisational style. This type of music became what we now call bebop. The stars who made it great were people like trumpeter Dizzy Gillespie and drummer Max Roach.
But not everybody could play like Max Roach. There were lots of new drummers out there, all competing for the same small combo gigs. In response to this, the drum companies, as a marketing strategy, pushed an advertising gimmick that is still used to this day - "The person with the most innovative drum gear gets the gig". Portability coupled with a unique appearance (which made you stand out from other drummers) was the key in marketing the cocktail or jobbing kit.
The example in the picture shown above is an early variation, and a rather extreme one at that. The Carlton King Combination was actually a British invention that was in production from 1948 to 1952. It featured a 20" floor tom supported by a massive hollow cast aluminum base. A cable connected through the base and out to a pedal that operated a timpani-like tuning mechanism inside the tom, allowing its pitch to be raised and lowered. A second pedal swung a beater vertically up against the bottom head of the tom, which approximated a bass drum. An arm folded out from a brace on the side of the big tom that held a snare basket for a 61/2" X 14" snare drum. Also included were several clips and mounts to hold arm attachments for cymbals, cowbells and woodblocks.
This unit, according to the advertising literature, was designed for use in cramped orchestra pits in London's West End theaters. The brochure went on to say that it served its purpose admirably by enabling "an incredible simulation of tribal beats and intonations for the 'Indian Love Call Dance'" for one particular British theatrical show.
Although the Carlton Combination was more compact than a standard drum set, it was only marginally more portable. It was heavy, required several cases and wasn't quick and easy to hook up, thanks to the cable-link pedal. It's probably for this reason that out of "hundreds of kits ordered by eager music stores," only three Carlton Combination outfits exist in the world today, to my knowledge (send me your photos!).
Major American drum companies such as Slingerland, Gretsch, Rogers and WFL (soon to be reunited as the Ludwig Drum Co.) didn't begin to offer what is generically termed a cocktail kit until the mid 1950s. When the American kits first started to appear, they were different enough to perhaps land you a gig, but were very similar in appearance to the Carlton kit of "Indian Love Call" fame. Wisely, the American development took a different tack by leaving out the timpani pedal apparatus.
The initial American versions, which were referred to as Combo, Jobber or Be-Bop kits, were based on the idea that many American drummers had decided to downsize their kit for small group work. It was around this time (late '40s to early '50s) that the major drum companies moved from the large-size drums needed to propel a big band (including a 26" bass drum) to something that would comfortably push a quartet, such as a 20" or even 18" bass drum and 12" and 14" toms. Early cocktail kits took this concept a step further by enhancing more utilitarian aspects. A typical kit consisted of an 18" x 20" tom that could be mounted upright with a vertical pedal and snare drum on a swing-out or separate stand. This large central drum was equipped with a metal top 20" tom hoop as well as a wooden bass drum hoop on the bottom side, which allowed the drum to be placed on its side as a bass drum (the pedal and cymbal arms could also be adjusted to accommodate the drum in this manner). Usually, a 4" x 14", a 4" x 13" or even a 3" x 13" snare drum was offered with the kit. With this set, theoretically, you could do your happy- hour gig, pack everything into two cases, load it into a cab or a bus, and make your polka/bingo- night gig across town with minimum hassle.
The second version of the cocktail kit debuted a bit later on in the '50s. Initially these were basically confined to a single stand-up 14" x 28" drum with snares under the top head and a vertical pedal (and couldn't be reversed). As time went on, companies began to shorten the shaft of the drum from 28" to 26", and finally, in some cases, even down to 23". Expensive versions of these kits would have outrigger toms, snare drums and cymbal/doodad holders, and cheaper models came without the vertical pedals, snare wires or even bottom heads. This version of the kit reached heightened popularity during the late '50s and early '60s when America rediscovered Latin rhythms, especially the bossa nova from Brazil. The "Girl from Ipanema" was not so much a sultry dream composed by Joao Gilberto and Antonio Carlos Jobim, but was instead a bosomy retread with beehive hair and a "come-hither" look singing slightly off-key and side-sticking a tall red sparkle drum in Danny's Dew Drop Inn.
The final version of the portable kit appeared before the notion of rock and roll drums and big amplification made the small kit obsolete (until recently). A 12' or 14" x 18" bass drum was mounted with a single stand coming up from the middle containing a small snare drum. I doubt that many people bought these units, because they disappeared in the space of about five years. By the mid '60s, cocktail kits were history as the trend was to go to larger kits and bigger sizes once the rock thing had taken off.
As we know now, the current retro trend in drum making has revived the cocktail set. Ayotte and Yamaha have produced current versions that allow us to see what our predecessors were up against. Have you ever tried to stand up, balance your body weight, work a bass drum pedal (and maybe hi-hats), maintain a comfortable back position, and groove for an hour or two? Do we understand why we don't hear much about Slim Jim Phantom anymore?

I love this thing!
While I'm not particularly a Yamaha drum fan, this thing kicks! I picked one up on a whim a few years ago and absolutely love it! NICE quality drum, beautiful inside and out. It wasn't long before I added the optional 8" snare and 10" tom. My complaints:1) I have the silver sparkle model. The wrap, while nice, is already fading - and it does NOT see sunlight.2) The YESS mounts on the snare and tom stink.3) The chrome plating on the legs is already worn off where the pedal clamps on.(while I'm making a point of these things, they are not major at all)4) Yamaha stuff is too pricey, regardless. My praises:1) I love Yamaha beavertail lugs. sleek and functional.2) The inverted pedal that comes with is QUITE nice. Not complicated, but smooth, fast and comfortable.3) This thing really makes a big noise!

modern cocktail drum
A quality cocktail drum. Good finish, nice features. I noticed it was easy to tune and get both sounds bass and snare to be clean, bracket holds pedal very stable as well. I have three problems with it though. First, it is very expensive for being just a cocktail drum, the price drove me away. You can get one just as good for a lot less. Next, the heads can be hard to find, unless you go to a drumshop (15" heads). Lastly, there is only one cymbal holder. I would have at least two, maybe three. All in all, the drum does sound great, but you will pay for it.

Best Death Metal Kit EVER.
By Ernest Rutheford
I never expected such a small set up to sound so HUGE! This little kit is dynamite, after hooking up my double-bass pedal(which is slightly jerry-rigged, but it works) I found it could do everything I needed. Fantastic kit.

Step-by-Step, Illustrated Instructions to make a Low-Cost, Height-Adjustable, Super-Portable and Ultra-Compact DIY Cocktail Drum Kit.
Introduction
Contrary to what many people may think, making your own DIY Cocktail Drum Kit is neither difficult nor costly. With modest handyman skills, some basic tools, a couple of orphan toms and some additional hardware I’ll show you how to get a kick-ass result. Cocktail style kits are by default compact as the the bass drum and floor tom are both combined on a footprint no larger than the diameter of the floor tom shell used. This project also takes portability to a new level by making the bass / floor tom double as a carry-case for the entire kit.
Materials Required: 1 Complete floor tom (We use a standard 16″ in this example, but a 14″, or 15″ is suitable as well.), 1 Rack tom (This will become both the tom-tom and the snare. Our example uses A 12″ tom), 3 additional tom leg brackets, 1 snare wire “cluster”, 1 internal damper like those found in older drums (Not entirely necessary), A handful of miscellaneous mounting hardware, and a pedal suitable for vertical stroke conversion (See our DIY Cocktail Pedal Conversion)
Tools needed: Drill, Screwdriver(s), Power-saw (preferably a table saw), miscellaneous hand tools
Preparation
The first order of business is to cut both shells into two pieces. The 12″ tom needs to be cut roughly in half while the floor tom will get separated about a third from the bottom. We do this in order to obtain height-adjustment and internal storage in regards to the floor tom. If we’re lucky there will be enough height adjustment that the finished kit can serve as either stand-up or sit-down. One half of the rack tom will serve as a concert tom, while the other half magically morphs into a single-headed snare. In our example we are attempting to leave the wrap on. This may or may not prove to be a good idea. Do remove all lugs and other hardware though. In either case, we start with taping along the cut-line, both inside and out, to avoid cracking, splintering and other unpleasant side-effects. It is also a good idea to equip your saw with the finest toothed blade available.
Use the table saw fence as a guide, slide the shell into the blade and then rotate it all the way around. After removing the tape, some fraying of the wrap edge was present. This would probably not occur had the wrap been adhered in it’s entirety, rather than just at the leading edge. I cut a quick round-over in the router to rectify this. After removing the duct-tape-residue I also applied some glue/water mix along the freshly cut edge, allowing it to wick in between the wrap and the shell. Hopefully this prevents any further cracking of the wrap. Once the glue/water is completely dry, sand the edge smooth.
Configuration
With the shells prepared we can start configuring our DIY Cocktail Drum Kit. The smaller half of the former floor tom will be our bass drum. Since it doesn’t require any additional holes, we can go ahead and assemble it. Install the lugs, leg brackets, head, rim and legs. (Since this is a low budget operating, we do employ free labour from time to time.) The floor tom will require holes for the 3 extra tom leg brackets. Mark the hole positions ensuring that they line up with the leg brackets on the bass drum. The floor tom will be attached to the same legs with the ability to slide vertically for height adjustment.
To avoid splintering the wood on the inside, use a brad-point bit. Start with drilling from the outside of the shell. Stop immediately as soon as the point pokes through the inside. Insert the point in the tiny hole inside the shell and drill the rest of the hole from the inside outward. Proceed with installing the leg brackets and lugs.
Before we can decide on a method for mounting the snare drum to the floor tom, we need to determine it’s position relative to said tom. Place your pedal between two of the tom legs, so the beater is centred under the head. Position your throne so the pedal is at a comfortable position for you. Check that you can comfortably operate the pedal. While sitting on the throne, foot on the pedal, the other foot where the Hi hat pedal would be, place the snare drum shell on the floor at the position most natural to you.

Since the snare drum in our example is very shallow, we have limited options in regards to a mounting bracket. After pondering the options I settled on mounting a spur sleeve to the snare and a leg bracket to the floor tom. The two connect with an L-rod. The spade bit and drill for drilling the spur sleeve hole don’t fit inside the shell. Thus the entire hole had to be drilled from the outside. To avoid breaking through the last ply, I drilled the last portion at highest speed and with very little force. This heated things up to the point that there was smoke, but the hole ended up clean all around.
Mark the holes for the tom leg bracket while holding the whole assembly in position. The snare’s top edge should be level with the tom’s top edge with the connecting L-rod centred in the bracket. With the leg bracket installed we can try out the position from the driver’s seat. There is some adjustment available since the L-rod can swivel in the bracket. Vertical adjustment shouldn’t be necessary since the snare is usually at the same height as the floor tom. However in our case we have about two inches to play with, depending on the L-rod used.
With the snare drum mounted it’s time to play some air drums to identify the position and angle of the tom tom. Then dig through the various boxes of hardware around here to find some suitable bits and pieces to attach the tom tom to the floor tom.
With an angle grinder I ended up cutting off the bent portion of the hex rod pictured, leaving about two inches of straight with the bent portion. As it turns out, the bend was the perfect angle for the tom tom. Before continuing I smoothed over the fresh cut in the bench grinder. We will be using just the bent piece of rod. The ball jointed rod goes back in the treasure box to be part of some future project.
Next we mark the holes on the tom tom shell, drill and mount the bracket. With the bracket and hex rod attached to the tom tom, we can mark the ideal position for the bracket on the floor tom. Mark the holes, drill and mount the floor tom bracket as well.
Bracket Installed Test Fit
Note that I mounted the brackets with the fastener screw facing downward. Even though it looks odd, there is more room for the hands there.
Time for another test fit of all the components. Looks like i got lucky and managed to get everything in the right spot.
Next we’re going to make a single headed snare out of that shallow tom shell.
Single-Headed Snare Drum
Those internal built in dampers often found in older drum kits can come in handy. The damping pad and backing washer are usually riveted to the “arm”. First we need to drill or grind this off depending on the type of rivet. Once ground down the pad and washer can be snapped off. Next mark for drilling the shell so the damper arm ends up parallel to the head about 1/4″ – 1/2″ below the head in it’s “relaxed” position. Drill the holes and install the arm and knob.
It is a good idea to install the lugs before continuing on to the snare wires. Cut a set of snare strands roughly at the centre. Screw one of the portions through the hole on the damper arm. It may be necessary to bend the arm a bit so the snares can make ample contact with the head, without the screw touching the head.
This design of snare may have been around longer than the regular dual-headed snare more commonly used. Yamaha’s Club Jordan Cocktail kit used exactly this design as do many DIY cocktail kits on the web. I first came across this type of snare drum on a cool website called: The Cocktail Drum Lounge
Snare Drum Finished Almost complete Getting there
Next we install the lugs on the tom tom and continue with the heads on the toms. Now all that remains is a mount to attach the pedal to and extensions for the floor tom legs. The extensions are required in order to raise the entire tom-tom-snare assembly for stand-up play.
I’ll likely replace the head on the snare drum with a coated one. The clear head on there now is mostly so the snare fan assembly would be visible for the pictures.
Bass Drum Pedal Attachment
Let’s see if we can’t come up with a nifty way to attach the pedal without complicating it too much. I found a metal bar and cut it down to length so it was just a couple of inches longer than the distance between the two tom legs. With the pedal clamped to the bar and the bar pushed up against the legs it was kinda’ wobbly. Wearing out three cheap drill bits in the process, I drilled holes in the mild steel bar a bit larger than the leg diameter. I still need to put a little bit more bend in the bar so the pedal touches the floor again, but it functions flawlessly.
Before I can make the leg extensions I have to get some materials. In the meantime we got started on a badge. It’s made from cut vinyl graphics adhered to an old piece of wrap. We put a few coats of polyurethane over the graphics before cutting out the outline. I’m not sure yet whether it will be applied with adhesive, small screws or both.
Height Extension
I found some aluminum tubing that fits snugly over the legs. With an angle grinder I cut three pieces and smoothed the edge in the bench grinder. One of the treasure boxes had some old spurs that happened to also fit snugly in the aluminum tube. After removing the rubber feet I stuffed a glob of construction adhesive in each piece of tube and inserted the pointy end of the spurs a few inches. Leave to dry overnight. I just realized that one of the extensions can double as a cowbell holder when in sit-down mode. Maybe I can also come up with a way to add a cymbal holder to one of them.
I also added some air filter foam to get the right sound from the bass drum. This stuff works really well to transform the tom sound to a bass drum sound. I will probably cut it donut shaped though so it doesn’t attenuate the drum quite as much.
As it turns out the tubes are just a smidge on the snug side. They are quite close to impossible to get off once put on. A few profanities and a bit of violence eventually got them off again, but I will have to come up with a better way to extend the legs. Other than that it all functions flawlessly and the tom, snare and pedal all fit nicely inside the bass/floor tom for transportation. Obviously the items should be wrapped in a towel or something for actual transportation.
Portable Cool: The DRUM! Guide To Cocktail Kits
BY BRAD SCHLUETER
STAND UP FOR YOUR BEATS
Cocktail drum sets are wonderfully strange contraptions. Not only do they look unusual, but they usually require drummers to stand up while playing them, balancing on one leg to work the kick pedal. On the plus side, playing gigs like this could be a great way to lose a few pounds! Maybe that’s how Slim Jim Phantom from Stray Cats got the nickname “Slim.”
However, contrary to what you may be thinking, cocktail kits weren’t invented by a drummer who forgot his throne or wanted a better view of the girls dancing in the front row. To paraphrase DRUM!’s own Liam Mulholland’s superb 1997 article on the subject, the kits came about after WWII, when jazz music reigned supreme but the era of big band music was waning and smaller combos playing bebop were beginning to emerge.
Drum companies experimented with new types of kits and one style that caught on employed a single drum that doubled as both a kick and snare. These used a long 14″ x 28″ shell with an inverted pedal underneath that played the bottom head as a bass drum, with snare wires mounted under its top head. Many kits of this type included a cymbal, cowbell, bongo, or other accessories mounted from the shell. In the ’60s, large amps and the emergence of rock and roll drove these kits from popularity. But for those among us who still pine for the lost charm of smoky midcentury cocktail lounges and hipsters sipping martinis and snapping their fingers to the beat, the cocktail kit is back, and better than ever, thanks to a select few artists and manufacturers keeping them alive.
In fact, these kits work well for more situations than you might think: unplugged weeknight gigs, rockabilly, country, mariachi, and drum ’n’ bass, to name a few.
This roundup should get you started in your quest for the ultimate in portable kits. The offerings outlined here range in price from a few hundred dollars up to several thousand dollars. Many of the kits feature mini snares that mount like a bongo off the vertical bass drum, and one features a full-sized snare drum that mounts above the bass. The bass drum diameters vary from 14″ up to 18″. You’ll get more low end from a larger drum if you need it, but since it can also double as a floor tom, something in the middle might work better.
You can buy separate drum cases – one manufacturer even includes a set – though the drums of some kits could fit together into a larger conga case. Almost all these kits employ a reverse-action bass drum pedal that attaches to two of the legs supporting the vertical bass drum. These kits come with hardware to mount closed hi-hats or other cymbals and accessories, though, depending on the kit, quality varies widely.
BILLY BLAST
Billy Blast drums prides itself on making high-quality kits at very reasonable prices. The company offers a unique cocktail kit that allows for easy transportation since the drums all fit inside the 16″ x 24″ bass drum. To accomplish this, the drum uses two heavy-duty latches and rubber seams that allow it to separate and store the other drums, similar to the way Yamaha’s Hip Gig kits operate. That should speed up your load-in time!
The drums use Keller 100 percent maple 8-ply VSS shells with Billy’s own sound-controlled heads. The kit comprises a vertical bass drum/floor tom, two nesting single-head toms (10″ x 6″ and 12″ x 6″), and a 12″ x 6″ snare drum with heavy-duty throw-off. The kit also features the proprietary Sliding Bass Drum Rail System to mount an inverted pedal under the drum. Up top you get adjustable snare and tom clamps and L-arms for easy positioning. The kit comes in a variety of wrapped finishes (metal, carbon-fiber wraps, and lacquer finishes are optional) and includes a leather gig bag for just $1,050, or you can get your own bag and nab this kit for just $875.
C&C has been making custom cocktail kits for some time now with Keller shells, but has recently upgraded its facility with new equipment and has begun making its own shells under the name Gladstone, and at a surprisingly reasonable cost.
Being a custom drum company, a plethora of options are available from C&C, but its “typical” cocktail kit includes the company’s new 7.6mm 8-ply 100 percent maple shells with 45 degree bearing edges in a configuration that includes a 14″ x 24″ bass drum/floor tom with either three or four legs, a 10″ x 6″ snare drum with either a high-end Trick or Nickel throw-off, and a 10″ x 6″ small tom – with both the snare and tom mounted onto the vertical bass drum. The kits come with either tube or beavertail lugs and two brackets for mounting additional cymbals and accessories, though more can be added for elaborate sets. Remo Powerstroke 3 heads are used for the bottom of the bass drum, with coated Emperors used for all batter heads (coated Ambassadors also available), and clear Ambassadors used as resonant heads. Most kits come in a variety of wraps, though lacquer finishes are also available. Note that the cymbal arms and bass drum pedal are not included. Price: $1,399.
DRUM WORKSHOP
One of the priciest and more elaborate offerings in this roundup is DW’s Collector series cocktail kit. It’s very customizable in terms of sizes and finishes and includes four 100 percent maple shells, including a larger-diameter 18″ x 16″ bass drum for extra bottom, a unique 18″ x 8″ “woofer tom” that mounts above it, and a 12″ x 6″ and 12″ x 5″ tom and snare. It also uses a novel “sidekick” bass drum pedal based on the DW5000 pedal that mounts to the side of the drum but uses a clamp and 90 degree arm to position the beater underneath. DW’s DogBone dual clamps allow for a wider variety of potential configurations than many of the kits in this overview. This may be the Rolls Royce of cocktail drum kits. List price, $4,592.
DUNNETT CLASSIC DRUMS
Ronn Dunnett IS known to many of us for his superb titanium snares and high-end throw-offs (like the new R4.0), but Dunnett also creates custom snares out of stainless steel, brass, bronze, copper, and, most recently, wood. Dunnett is the only drum manufacturer in the world who makes custom metal snares and drum sets. And yes, those include breathtakingly beautiful cocktail drums.
Since everything is custom made, you’d start with a cocktail drum constructed from titanium or stainless steel and add whatever additional drums or hardware you’d like à la carte. Dunnett mounts a 14″ snare drum via a small carrier directly above the bass drum, resulting in a very compact vertical setup. One advantage of this is that you can remove the snare to use with a more standard drum kit. Cymbals and accessories can be added via brackets on the cocktail drum. This gorgeous 14″ x 22″ titanium bass drum/floor tom with wood hoops, extra-long tube lugs, and space-age legs would cost you about $2,000, which seems reasonable considering these unique drums do double duty as works of art as well as great musical instruments.
Custom drum maker GMS offers a couple of different cocktail kits in both its SL and SE series. The SL kit features 7-ply 100 percent birch shells with 45 degree bearing edges and includes a 15″ x 20″ bass drum/floor tom with an 8″ x 4.5″ snare with throw-off and 10″ x 4.5″ tom that both attach to its sides. A reverse-action bass drum pedal and a cymbal arm are included to finish the package. The kit features a Silver Sparkle-To-Black fade high-gloss lacquer finish and several other finishes for a very appealing $899. Also, GMS offers an even more compact 8-ply 100 percent maple—shell kit from its SE line in a two-drum “snare-over-bass-drum” configuration (similar to Dunnett’s and Peace’s offerings) for $2,399 that’s available in wrap or satin finishes.
HB Retrophonic cocktail kits boast a 1967 sound and price. The company offers an attractive Natural Birch Lacquer—finish kit (also available in Sea Foam Lacquer), though its wrapped finish kits are even less expensive than these remarkably inexpensive drums. The cocktail kits feature 6.5mm, 6-ply birch shells with retro-style lugs and badges. 16″ x 24″ vertical bass drum includes a reverse-action chain-drive pedal and internally muffled Mylar heads. The 8″ x 5″ snare comes with a real throw-off so it can double as a small tom. There’s another dedicated 10″ x 5″ tom as well. This kit also includes 12″ hi-hats, a 10″ splash, a small cowbell, sticks, and even a set of cases! List price is from $349—$479, depening on if you want PVC wrap or lacquer finish. Customizable shell depth, lug option, and bearing edge angles. Made in the USA.
Next up is the Peace Manhattan kit, which might have gotten its name from the fact that you could easily transport it around the Big Apple via the subway or taxi. This stylish take on the Cocktail kit features a full-sized 14″ x 5.5″ snare drum, a 14″ x 18″ bass drum, and Peace’s Velocity reverse-cam chain-drive bass drum pedal and two cymbal arms for mounting your hi-hats or cymbals. These cleverly mount via two of the floor tom brackets, which also hold the snare drum in place. A matching 10″ x 5″ tom is mounted on the far side of the kit from the third pair of brackets. Since the snare is mounted directly over the bass drum you can’t have the drum double as a floor tom. Peace separates them with its Iso-Facto muffling disc to minimize sympathetic snare buzz. It comes in a variety of finishes (including Red Flame and Blue Sparkle) PVC finishes. The Manhattan’s full-sized snare may prove to be a more comfortable adjustment for drummers who play a lot of brushes. Price $1,409.
RCI STARLIGHT
RCI Starlight offers the New Wave Retro Coffee House Kit, which, other than having the longest name, features RCI’s acrylic shells in a wide variety of solid and transparent colors certain to appeal to any taste. This cool kit has a 16″ x 24″ bass drum/floor tom, 10″ x 6.5″ snare drum, 10″ x 6.5″ tom, an adjustable cymbal arm, a closed hi-hat arm, reverse bass drum pedal, four tom legs, all mounting hardware, and RCI’s Super Duty hoops. The kit boasts a very quick set-up and tear-down time for drummers on the go as well as a completely unique appearance. Price varies by shell type: Transparent kits start at $2,899; pattern finish kits are $3,799; and the spectacularly patriotic Spirit Of America kits are $4,799.

STAUFFER PERCUSSION
For those wanting a little more from their cocktail kits, Stauffer Percussion has you covered. The company has been handcrafting kits under the Stauffer and Phattie labels since 2001. But our money’s on the Deluxe cocktail kits, which feature 100 percent maple Keller VSS shells with hand-crafted bearing edges. This kit features a 16″ x 24″ bass drum, 10″ x 6″ mini-snare drum, 10″ x 5″ tom, and a staggering selection of 19 different Glass-glitter and Pearl or Onyx wrapped finishes. Evans heads are used throughout along with Gibraltar’s excellent cymbal and hi-hat hardware, which is sturdy enough for full-sized hi-hats and ride cymbals.
A Gibraltar 9611DC reverse-action pedal is included but unlike the other kits here, this one doesn’t attach to the bass drum’s four legs but instead adheres to the small gig rug included with the kit. This should save a bit of time during setup and teardown. The six interchangeable mounting brackets allow for a wider variety of setups than most of the kits in this roundup. Radio King—style lugs, vintage-style snare strainer, and an antiqued die-cast badge round out the niceties included with this professional kit. This kit retails for $1,249 plus shipping. Incidentally, Stauffer offers two other types of cocktail kits: $899 Standard and $1,399 Nester (nesting) kit, as well as the option to customize in any number of ways.
WHITNEY DRUMS
Whitney Drums makes what are arguably the most unique cocktail kits in this article. Featuring “fat-in-the-middle” Penguin shells (2″ larger than the head diameter), these drums boast a completely unique lug-less design. The drums are very lightweight (just 18 lbs. for the three drums), and have 3-ply all-birch shells with 9-ply birch collars and 6-ply birch bearing edges with a rounded cut.
Whitney’s Sidekick Penguin set can be played while sitting down and includes three drums that function as four since the 15″ x 14″ “kicktom” bass drum doubles as the floor tom. There’s also a separate 12″ x 5″ snare drum with real throw-off and a 10″ x 7″ tom. All three drums mount on a single cymbal stand and cleverly don’t require legs for the vertical bass drum so this kit will take up less floor space than most.
More incredibly, the drums actually nest inside one another for ease in transport – simply remove four thumbscrews on the kicktom and pack the snare and mounted tom inside it. The complete set of hardware includes a DW5000S Sidekick pedal (which Whitney designed for DW), a cymbal stand with hardware for mounting the drums and two cymbals, blankets for the nested drums, and a padded bag for drums and another for the hardware. The drums come in a variety of lacquer finishes and wood hoops for a factory-direct price of $1,899 with wood hoops, or $1,749 for chrome hoops.
You may have deduced that Yamaha’s Club Jordan kit was developed following a collaboration with Yamaha endorser and drumming great Steve Jordan. If so, take a bow, Sherlock! This kit features an eight-lug 15″ x 24″ bass drum with muffled Remo Pinstripe bottom head, six-lug 10″ x 5″ tom and a five-lug 8″ x 5″ mini snare, the latter two mounting on the bass drum like bongos via Yamaha’s YESS mounts. A cymbal arm is included that can mount a crash/ride below a pair of hi-hats, and even accommodates woodblock or tambourine.
The shells of this kit are constructed of birch and Philippine mahogany. The small snare has a traditional strainer that you can drop for an additional tom or bongo effect. The floor tom has a knob that raises a fan of wires that press up against the bottom of the batter head to give a snare effect similar to the sound of a Civil War snare. This is a nice bonus, though using the bass pedal will also vibrate the wires. This kit includes a reverse-action bass drum pedal and even a unique Side Shell Percussion Board for jamming out cascara patterns. These kits are available in either Silver or Pink Sparkle with a retail price of $1,378.
