Low Calorie Cocktails

Who doesn’t like an occasional cocktail on a night out? Unfortunately, cocktails are deliciously morish and it’s often difficult to stop after just one. Given that most of us drink an inordinate amount of our total daily calories (more than 20%) and that a cocktail can easily clock more than 600 calories, it’s worth learning which cocktails are high in calories, which ones are low calorie and how to make your favorite cocktail a little less calorific. A few tweaks here and there to a cocktail can drastically lower their calorie content.

Carbohydrates: 14 g

Ingredients: 2 oz. gin / vodka, 5 oz. tonic water, one lime wedge

A lowish calorie drink you can make lower. Gin/ Vodka with SODA is seriously low-calorie. Gin/ Vodka Tonic contains sugar from the tonic water. It isn’t the most fattening drink, but it is deceptive.

Lower calorie option: Gin/ Vodka with club soda.

Calories: 100 calories

Carbohydrates: 12 g

Ingredients: 2 – 3 oz. rum, 1 tsp. lime juice, 2 tsp. sugar, fresh mint leaves, club soda.

Calories do not include the sugar water often used to sweeten the cocktail even further. This cocktail can be low-calorie and on the upside contains vitamin C (boosting your immune system) and fresh mint for the digestion. However, calorie content will vary markedly on how much sugar is used to sweeten the cocktail. There is a lot of variation.

Lower calorie option: Speak to the bartender, ask him to go easy on the sugar or use a sweetener instead.

Carbohydrates: 10 g

Ingredients: 1 oz. vodka, 1/2 oz. triple sec, 1/2 oz. lime juice, 1/2 oz. cranberry juice.

Calorie content does not include the syrup often used in place of lime juice, which is of course much higher in sugar. Low in calories and contains health-boosting cranberry juice. While not the most calorific cocktail, but easier to drink than the others. Can end-up drinking a few of these easily.

Lower calorie option: vodka with (diet) cranberry juice.

Ingredients: 1 oz. Vodka, 1 ½ oz. Watermelon juice, 1 Watermelon slice

Fruity, rejuvenating pink cocktail. Plus, watermelon is a high in lycopene, an antioxidant believed to help reduce your risk for heart disease. Also, this cocktail is one of those you can easily modify to make it healthier.

  • Rum (1 oz.) and Diet Coke
  • Gin and diet tonic
  • 7 and 7 – Seagram’s Seven Crown Blended Whiskey and diet 7-Up (similar to whiskey sour)
  • Jack Daniels and diet ginger ale

10 Best Low-Calorie Cocktails

Office parties, family gatherings, dinner with friends, New Year's Eve bashes—the holidays are filled with boozey temptations. To imbibe without feeling guilty, sip in moderation (watch portion size! A couple refills or an oversize serving glass and you're back in calorie city) and stick to these fewer-than-200-calorie drink options.

Low-Calorie Cocktail: Mojito

Although a drink made with sugar screams "back away!" for the waistline-conscious, you can request half the simple syrup—or ditch it altogether. Mint, lime, and soda water are all naturally low-cal, a shot of rum is about 100 calories, and 2 tbsp. of sugar (half the normal serving) in the form of syrup is about 40 calories.

Low-Calorie Cocktail: Rum and Diet Coke

Ah, the classic rum and Coke—minus the, well, Coke . Enid Cortes, bartender at New York City's Royalton Hotel, says a white rum and diet cola is a good choice to cut the calories. Or try a spiced rum to give the drink a kick.

Low-Calorie Cocktail: Sea Breeze

If you usually order a vodka-cranberry, try a sea breeze. The 4 oz. of grapefruit juice, 1½ oz. of cranberry juice, and 1 oz. of vodka will set you back about 180 calories.

Low-Calorie Cocktail: Vanilla Vodka and Diet Ginger Ale

For a drink that tastes like a slice of cake, order a diet ginger ale and vanilla vodka. If you use a single shot of liquor, it's less than 100 calories—and sugar-free.

Low-Calorie Cocktail: Tequila and Soda

Cortes says to ditch the sugar-laden margarita and say *viva la tequila *on the rocks with club soda for a 100-calorie drink. Add a squeeze of lime to up the refreshment factor.

Low-Calorie Cocktail: Champagne

Forget choosing between wine and beer. A 4-oz. glass of bubbly is only 85 calories. That's about 15 calories less than a 12-oz. bottle of light beer or a 4-oz. glass of wine—and let's be honest: The average glass of wine is usually at least twice that size.

Low-Calorie Cocktail: Sour-Apple Martini

We bet you thought this list was going to be filled with sippers like white-wine spritzers. Guess again. While we don't recommend a Carrie Bradshaw-approved cosmo (it has more than 250 calories), that doesn't mean all martinis are off limits. Try a sour-apple one, made with 2 1/2 oz. sour mix and 3/4 oz. each vodka and sour apple liqueur, for a 160-calorie treat.

Low-Calorie Cocktail: Vodka and Diet Lime-Flavored Soda Like Sprite Zero or Diet Sierra Mist

No, it's not the most glamorous drink at the bar, but it is refreshing (and refreshingly low in calories—under 100!). Plus, it's clear, so your dry cleaner will thank you if you spill any on your new party dress.

Low-Calorie Cocktail: Mudslide

This is the kind of sweet drink that sounds like it'll set you back more calories than a hot-fudge sundae. In reality, it'll cost you 184 calories. Maybe the Dude from The Big Lebowski could have whittled his waistline if he'd drunk these instead of white Russians (338 calories).

Low-Calorie Cocktail: Gin and Tonic

It's always good to have a go-to drink, and unless you're still in school, a vodka and Red Bull doesn't count. Up your sophistication level while lowering your calorie count by ordering a G&T. There are 103 calories in 1 oz. gin and 3 oz. tonic.

10 of the Lowest Calorie Cocktails You Can Drink

The season for celebrating is upon us, which means you probably have more occasions to drink than usual. If you're trying to watch your calorie intake, every cocktail menu is full of options that can add empty calories to your daily goal. So, here are 10 tasty cocktails that are all less than 200 calories. Whether you like gin, rum, tequila, or whiskey, there's a beverage for you below—and they're all easy to mix up at home.

10. Gimlet: 178 calories

If gin is your liquor of choice, go with a classic gimlet at the bar. This drink combines a splash of Rose's Sweetened Lime Juice with your favorite liquor—and that's it. To cut even more calories, skip the pre-bought juice and add simple syrup and fresh-squeezed lime instead. Get the recipe here!

9. Martini: 176 calories

This classic martini is a mix of vermouth and gin. Asking your bartender to make it dry, means you'll get less vermouth and more liquor. Olives, optional. Check out the recipe here!

8. Mojito: 168 calories

Rum drinkers will want to avoid some of the popular cocktails like a mai tai or LIT. Instead ask for a minty mojito at the open bar. This drink is a mix of sugar, muddled mint leaves, and lime. Order this refreshing sip when you're looking for something sweet, not syrupy. Find out how to mix up a mojito!

7. Paloma: 166 calories

Tequila lovers will have to pass on the margaritas to shed calories, but a paloma is the next best thing. This drink is a blend of grapefruit juice, soda, and lime. Skip the sugar or salt around the rum for an even healthier after-five refreshment. Here's the recipe!

6. Old Fashioned: 154 calories

If you don't like to drink your bourbon straight, request an old fashioned at the bar. This cocktail has a splash of bitters to add flavor (without tacking on too many calories) and a bit of sugar. Mix one up with these ingredients!

5. Gin and Tonic: 148 calories

With tonic counting for only 10 calories an ounce, it's the perfect accompaniment to a top-shelf gin (or vodka). Find out the perfect ratios here!

4. Sazerac: 136 calories

Whiskey drinkers who know best order a sazerac at the bar. This addition of bitters, absinth, sugar, and water smoothes out the bite of the liquor, without skyrocketing the calorie number. Here's the recipe!

3. Vodka Soda: 96 calories

Ordering a vodka soda at the bar will cut down on your calories sipped for the night. Since soda water has zero calories, all you have to account for is the alcohol. Go ahead, and order another round. Here's the recipe!

2. Rum and Diet: 96 calories

Satisfy your taste for soda with a rum and Diet Coke at happy hour. Calorie-wise all you have to count is the 1.5 ounces of rum. However beware the high levels of caffeine, which might keep you up well past your bedtime.

1. Champagne: 90 calories

Champagne and champagne-related cocktails are some of the most forgiving in the calorie department. One standard flute (about 4 oz.) rings in far less than a glass of wine or any mixed drink.
