Ginger Beer and Ginger Ale Cocktail Recipes

Ginger ale and ginger beer add a refreshing spice to mixed drinks

Ginger ale, and its spicier, fermented cousin ginger beer, are ideal cocktail mixers. The effervescence lightens up a summery highball, while the ginger's bite tames spirits. We've rounded up our favorite ginger ale and ginger beer cocktail recipes.

Ginger ale and ginger beer can both be purchased, but it's fun and easy to make them on your own. For ginger ale, simply make a syrup out of water, ginger, sugar, and a dash of black peppercorns, then mix it with soda water. To make ginger beer, brew up a similar ginger mixture and add in spices and champagne yeast. Strain the mixture, bottle it, and after a day of fermentation you have your very own ginger beer!

Whether you make or buy, you've got delicious recipes to try. The Moscow Mule is a classic mix of ginger beer and vodka. If you steep the vodka with lemongrass and grapefruit to make aquavit then you have a variation called a Swedish Mule, while swapping the vodka out for gin and adding a little mint makes a Gin-Gin Mule.

The Dark 'N Stormy is another classic ginger beer cocktail, with black rum and ginger beer swirling together like storm clouds. The Black and Stormy is a variation that kicks up the spice with ginger liqueur.

For a summertime drink for your next cookout, mix together a pitcher of our Strawberry Pimm's Cup with ginger ale and kaffir lime leaves.

Check out all of our favorite ginger ale and ginger beer cocktail recipes, plus recipes for homemade ginger beer and ginger syrup!

Any of these cocktails can be made with store-bought ginger beer. But if you want to go the extra mile, you can brew your own from scratch.

Not quite up to brewing your own ginger beer? An easier option is to make your own ginger ale by cooking up a batch of this ginger syrup and mixing it with soda water.

Inspired by our list of Friday cocktails, bartender Michael Neff noticed that bitter flavors were prominent, as were fizzy drinks made with fresh fruit and herbs. To that end, he created a modified Pimm's Cup, using Cynar to add a bit more bitter tang and ginger beer for spice. Fresh fruit and herbs round out the (almost) traditional summer refresher.

By trademark, this Bermudan combination of rum and ginger beer requires Gosling's Black Seal Rum; similar drinks with names like dark 'n foggy or light 'n stormy use other rums.

A refreshing marriage between a Tom Collins and a Dark n' Stormy, this lime and ginger beer-spiked gin cocktail has an intriguing herbal undertone thanks to Amaro Abano, a zesty Italian digestif with notes of bitter orange, cardamom, and white pepper.

This vodka-and–ginger beer libation is traditionally served in a copper mug.

In this Moscow Mule variation, vodka is infused with lemongrass and grapefruit to make aquavit.

This Moscow Mule variation is made with gin and mint.

Black-currant-flavored crème de cassis adds fruity dimension and a lovely pink hue to this ginger beer and tequila cocktail from the 1940s.

This variation on the El Diablo swaps crème de cassis for black currant jam and earthy honey.

Martin Cate of Smuggler's Cove in San Francisco combines Chartreuse and ginger ale in this refreshing tropical drink.

Spiced rum and fiery ginger beer combine with tart cranberry juice in this flavorful cool-weather cocktail.

This sweet-tart wine punch was invented by members of the Junior League of Houston book club in the 1970s.

This chilled cider punch combines the fall flavors of a mulled cider with the celebratory feel of a sparkling punch.

Vodka, ginger beer, and muddled pear make for a tart and refreshing cocktail perfect for sipping on a cool fall evening.

This version of a classic tiki drink mixes two kinds of rum with a variety of fruit juices and syrups.

A twist on the British classic, this summer cooler takes on spicy, herbal notes from Kaffir lime leaves, while strawberries lend sweet balance to the pleasingly bitter liqueur. Get the recipe for Strawberry Pimm's Cup »

A mix of Campari, Pimm's No. 1, and ginger beer, this drink makes an excellent warm weather apéritif.

This recipe for a modified Dark and Stormy uses fresh ginger juice for a kick of refreshing heat.

This twist on a mojito combines pineapple- and coconut-infused rum with fresh pineapple and mint for a fruity, vacation-inspired drink.

This bubbly cocktail features champagne, ginger beer, rhubarb, cardamom, and just a hint of vanilla.

Ginger Beer & Gin Cocktail

At the risk of sounding like a complete skinflint I’d like to moan and groan about cocktail prices in restaurants, bars and night clubs. Am I the only one who thinks they are hideously overpriced?!

The cheapest cocktail I’ve come across was £4, which was served in a teeny-weeny glass, to a ludicrous £15 at an upmarket restaurant.

Just as an example I will tally up this drink.

£1 for 1.5 litres of ginger beer. 250ml = 17p

So what exactly are we paying for? The experience, the dishwasher, music and let’s not forget the all-important bartender. He’d better be Robert Pattinson-cute plus show off his biceps in a tight shirt if we are to pay the restaurant 300% in profits. These establishments are notorious for committing daylight robbery in the alcohol/drinks department. It’s a wonder why the public hasn’t spoken up yet!

If I still haven’t convinced you to prepare your own cocktail, at least order it without ice to get the most bang for your buck. For the converts, get creative with your cocktails and enjoy yourself at home, it’s dangerous to drink and drive anyway.

Ginger Beer & Gin Cocktail

Total 5 minutes

Ingredients

  • 2 parts gin, e.g. Gordon’s
  • juice of half a lemon
  • 5ml (1 tsp) caster sugar
  • ginger beer
  • ice cubes
  • orange slice to garnish
  • mint leaves to garnish

Instructions

  1. Place the gin, lemon juice and sugar in a glass and stir. Add the ice cubes and top off with ginger beer. Stir gently and serve immediately.

Recipe Notes

  • If you are lucky enough to own a cocktail shaker then shake the gin, sugar and lemon juice with some of the ice, strain into the glass and top off with ginger beer. Stir gently and serve.
  • Just multiply the ingredients according to how many people you serve.
  • Old Jamaica Ginger Beer is my favourite!

I arrived at this site because I googled ‘Ginger Beer and Gin Cocktail’ thinking I had discovered a new and refreashing drink. Not so it seems. Pity cos I had even thought of a good name for it. Oh well back to the drawing board… or should it be ‘The Cocktail Shaker’

That is a gorgeous photo! Very artistic.

I agree about alcoholic beverages out. They are way overpriced!

Gin and Ginger Cocktail

This recipe came about yesterday as I was prepping to watch Game 7 of the World Series. Game sevens make me really nervous. Be it baseball, hockey, or basketball, when everything is hanging on one game, I can’t help but feel stressed out. That’s where my gin and tonic was supposed help. I should have saw it as a sign when I couldn’t find any tonic water in the pantry.

Ginger beer is one fizzy beverage I never run out of. Whenever I see a new or different ginger beer product in stores, you know I’m buying it. Ginger beer tastes great with vodka (Moscow Mule), perfect with rum (Dark and Stormy), and fantastic with bourbon (Kentucky Mule). It’s only natural that I should try it with gin.

I had no idea that gin and ginger would make such an amazing couple. This resulting cocktail is fresh, bright and refreshing. It’s like a gin and tonic with a little extra kick.

This gin and ginger was the just the drink I needed to soothe the heartache of the game. Mind you, it was a great game until the Giants won it all. Oh well. No biggie. Nothing a little Taylor Swift can’t fix. After the game ended I played T.Swift’s new album for the umpteenth time this week and danced it out…with a gin and ginger cocktail in hand, of course.

Gin-Gin Mule Recipe

As I wrote on Wednesday, the broad family of tall, fizzy drinks that includes the Collins, the buck, the fizz and the rickey is essential to have in the summer arsenal because of the drinks' superb cooling powers. Most of these drinks are incredibly simple to make, but there are also the complex cousins, the drinks that may throw in an extra ingredient or two to rev up the flavor and character. Here's one of the best recent formulations that fits into this fizzy family: the Gin Gin Mule.

Developed around a decade ago by Pegu Club owner Audrey Saunders, the Gin Gin Mule now appears on the cocktail menus at dozens of bars around the world, for one basic reason: it's absolutely freakin' delicious. This drink takes the basic "mule"—pretty much the same thing as a buck, which is a drink with liquor, ginger ale or ginger beer and lemon or lime juice—and adds a couple of tweaks: first, fresh mint is added to the drink, which seems to magnify its cooling properties; and second, Saunders developed the drink using house-made ginger beer, which has a spicy bite difficult to find in commercial brands.

Not that you can't go at this using a bottled ginger beer (not ginger ale, which is a much milder kinda thing). If you take this approach, you may want to adjust the amount of simple syrup to account for the sweetness in your ginger beer (you're just going to have to go by taste, here, depending on the brand you're using—bottled ginger beers are all over the map when it comes to sugar). You'll also want to go as spicy as you can with the ginger beer: Blenheim is the spiciest I've found, and there are some ginger beers from Jamaica I've come across in specialty shops that convey the desired bite. If you can't find a suitably spicy ginger beer, one way to amp up the ginger flavor is to muddle a slice or two of fresh ginger in the shaker before adding the mint, then proceed as before.

Oh, and for gin: reach for something with a little juniper backbone, such as Tanqueray or Beefeater; these drier, old-school London drys stand up nicely in tall, citrusy drinks like this.

  • Yield: makes 1 cocktail
  • Active time: 2 minutes
  • Total time: 2 minutes

Ingredients

  • 10 mint leaves
  • 1/2 ounce simple syrup (or to taste)
  • 1/2 ounce lime juice
  • 1 1/2 ounces gin
  • 2 ounces chilled ginger beer
  • garnish: lime wedge and mint sprig

Directions

In a cocktail shaker, lightly muddle mint leaves with simple syrup and lime juice.

Add gin and fill with ice; shake gently until chilled (you don't want to smash the mint to smithereens), about 10 seconds. Strain into a highball glass filled with ice, add ginger beer and stir. Garnish with lime wedge or mint sprig, or both.

Mixology

Welcome to the Bundaberg Brewed Drinks cocktail bar where we like to mix things up. Our delicious range of cocktails and mocktails have been handcrafted by Matt Fearnley from The Laneway, Brisbane.

Dark and Stormy

Great stories have invariably started with a Dark and Stormy night, but this classic cocktail is so refreshingly delicious it’s perfect for a mild and sunny afternoon too! It’s the national drink of Bermuda and just quietly we think it’s the cocktail of choice for Australians too.

Probably because of the dark rum – long associated with sailors, Dark and Stormy is also the official drink of the yachting fraternity. Another reason might be because it’s so easy to make..

Like most cocktails, the composition of Dark and Stormy depends on the temperament, taste and resources of the Mixologist. What’s 100% essential though is the quality of the ginger beer used. Bring your ‘A’ game and insist on Bundaberg Ginger Beer. It offers depth and complexity, so do your Dark and Stormy a favour and go for ginger beer with flavour!

Have we missed one of your favourite cocktails? Be sure to let us know.

And if you think you can improve any of our cocktails, we’d love to hear from you too.

Cocktail Friday: Pimms + Ginger Beer

My grandmother has always been a believer in prayer. Any time anyone in the family lost something, she would say a prayer to St. Anthony.

St. Anthony, St. Anthony, please come around. Something's been lost and cannot be found.

Somehow, each and every time, whatever is missing turns up not long after saying this prayer. Personally, I think my grandma must have a special relationship with St. Anthony; some kind of deal, maybe. Because as no-fail as it is for her, I still seem to legitimately lose things that are never, ever found. Somewhere out there is a collection of cards, dollar bills, glasses, and ear buds never to be found again.

One thing that seemed to be lost until recently was a season called spring. But finally it seems that spring has arrived complete with thunderstorms, birds chirping, and fresh, green grass. I was reminded the other day of the spring festival that took place around this time at the school where we worked in Tokyo. Many countries were represented and served food and drinks like lamb from New Zealand to Caipirinhas from Brazil. We would stand outside and eat and drink and laugh, our shoulders and cheeks turning pink with the first sunburn of the season. It was always such fun and felt like a celebration of everything that had happened in the months leading up to that day.

The first time I attended the festival, I was introduced to Pimm's No. 1, a liqueur from England. It was served in clear plastic cups with loads of diced apples, cucumbers, and mint. The pleasant, refreshing flavor was something I didn't realize existed in the world of cocktails. When Pimm's wandered into my mind a few days ago, I new I needed to have a bottle in my at-home bar collection.

While I love the flavor and appearance of all the diced fruit that goes into a Pimm's Cup, I decided to simplify a bit. When you're making a cocktail for one, it seems like a lot of work to chop a bunch of stuff, doesn't it? Especially if it's been one of those weeks where the dog had to get the "cone of shame" because of a paw injury and the toddler has been practicing his climbing skills by dancing on the coffee table. And the cone-head dog always joins in. At the end of a week like that, you want something that requires little effort but has a big payback.

Yes, ginger beer is quite strong but in the proper proportions, it works well with Pimm's. The spicy ginger kick is actually really wonderful with the light fruit and herb flavor of the iced-tea colored liqueur. A little fresh mint and lime juice and you've got a daper drink indeed.

What are your go-to methods for retrieving something that is lost? I think St. Anthony came through when it came to the case of the Lost Spring, but I'm always looking for backup ideas for when I lose my keys. Or my glasses. Or whatever it may be.

2 oz. ginger beer

2 oz. Pimm's No. 1

1/2 oz. lime juice

4-5 large mint leaves, plus extra for garnish

Muddle the mint leaves and lime juice in the bottom of a cocktail shaker. Add the Pimm's and stir to combine. Strain into a short glass filled with ice. Top with the ginger beer and stir lightly to combine. Garnish with mint leaves and/or a lime wedge. Serve and enjoy!
