10 Great Cocktail Shakers

Give the Gift That Keeps on Shaking

When you are shopping for a new cocktail shaker the choices can be overwhelming as there are many styles and designs available.

The first decision is to choose between a 3-piece cocktail shaker and a Boston shaker. The main difference between the two styles is that the cocktail shaker has a built-in strainer and the Boston shaker requires a Hawthorne strainer.

There are also designer and novelty cocktail shakers with all of the function and extra style.

Zack Contas Boston Shaker

The Zack Contas Boston Shaker has one great feature that makes it stand out against other shakers, and that is the measuring scale on the glass. This isn't going to eliminate the need for a jigger for proper measurement.

However, if you want to make three 4-ounce drinks at once you can use the scale, knowing that you should have approximately 12 ounces of liquid in the glass before you add ice. Of course, when you shake or stir, some of that ice will melt and add to the volume, but you will . MORE be assured that your final pour will not be short.

This feature is especially handy when the recipe you are following gives measurements in parts .

Quick Strain Tin

Quick Strain Tins were designed by a seasoned bartender for professionals. The Boston shaker-style mixing tins have straining holes around the rim and eliminate the need for an external strainer.

The tins are available with either a full circumference of strainer holes or sectioned strainers. They're very convenient, easy to use, and are inexpensive.

These are one of my favorite sets and it is nice to have a few sets on hand for mixing multiple drinks quickly.

WMF Boston Shaker

The sleek design of the WMF Boston Shaker makes this a stylish addition to any bar. The company is known for displaying high-quality materials in nice, sleek designs, making this shaker one that will stand the test of time.

The stainless steel tin has a delicate, handsome curve that is a perfect fit for the thick mixing glass that also has a scale for measuring. The WMF Boston Shaker is perfect for both the professional and home bar.

Alessi Boston Shaker

For the experienced bartender who enjoys a little style in their shaker, this one from Alessi is a great choice.

There is nothing truly spectacular about it, but the subtle bevel on both the glass and tin bases are just enough to give this shaker a great, sleek, modern design. It holds up to 17 ounces, so it is also great for shaking a few drinks at once.

Released in the summer of 2015, Shaker 33 is an interesting new take on the classic 3-piece shaker design.

Made from a high-quality, durable plastic called Tritan, Shaker 33 does not get frosty cold like stainless steel shakers. The lid has a tight seal and the removable strainer is designed to be very efficient.

Mixologist World Cocktail Shaker

This 3-piece shaker from Mixologist World is a very basic design that is perfect for the beginner.

As an introductory cocktail shaker, this is a new favorite. The stainless steel construction is very rugged and seems durable enough to last for years. It holds up to 24-ounces and will also fit the average pint glass so you can quickly convert it into a Boston shaker.

Trudeau Cosmo Cocktail Shaker

One of the traditional cocktail shakers, this 3-piece shaker adds a touch style to the original design.

The cap is the best feature of this stainless steel shaker. It is a 3-step jigger that measures either 1/2, 1, and 2 ounces, eliminating the need for a separate jigger.

Metrokane Bullet Cocktail Shaker

Step back to the 1930's with the bullet shaker design.

Available in a small 16-ounce and larger 28-ounce sizes, this polished stainless steel cocktail shaker is a perfect gift for the art deco lover. The integral strainer and drip-free spout filters ingredients and minimizes spilling.

Oggi Cocktail Shaker

Oggi makes a great line of 3-piece shakers that each has a different design element.

Pictured is the Marilyn Tall & Slim design, but they also have shakers with faux diamonds, mosaics, beads, and painted glass. There is a style for everyone and they are all a good quality at a very reasonable price.

OXO 360 Cocktail Shaker

Here's a 2-piece shaker with a built-in strainer -- for years the Metrokane Flip-Top fit the bill, which has a nice and convenient design. However, this OXO 360 shaker is just a little bit better.

With the OXO 360, you get the convenience of a strainer inside the lid and it is a just a matter of pushing a button to open the shaker to strain your drink.

The operation of this shaker is very similar to a coffee thermos and it produces a clean, steady stream. As with any of these shakers, there is . MORE a tendency for ice to jam up inside the strainer, but that is nothing a little shake can't fix.

Top 7 Cocktail Shakers

Designed for dependable performance as well as showmanship, the Metrokane Bullet cocktail shaker comes in two sizes to combine ice and ingredients for single mixed drinks or a larger batch for a group to enjoy. The manufacturer drew inspiration from classic martini shakers of the 1930s to produce this bar tool with a built-in strainer and shiny stainless steel finish that keeps its luster use after use.

Known as simply the American shaker or Boston shaker, the Alessi Boston makes quick work of mixed drinks with a stainless steel mixing area and glass beaker that doubles as a serving vessel for up to 17-oz single drink preparations. This type of shaker brings professional bar glassware to the home setting, as the setup mirrors restaurant-quality cocktail shakers found in higher-end establishments around the country.

Styled with clean, contemporary lines, the Oggi Marilyn tall and slim cocktail shaker derived inspiration from Marilyn Monroe. It features a wide base, slim middle, and shiny top from which artfully crafted mixed drinks flow in 26-ounce increments. This shaker comes together with 18/8-grade stainless steel and the brushed finish camouflages fingerprints and drink spills for a impressive mixology performance whether enjoying a quiet evening at home or entertaining a group of friends.

Combining a minimalist design with functional features, the Libbey glass cocktail shaker with black lid allows the drink creator or guests to see drinks come together and swirl around with ice to form a finished creation. The built-in strainer makes this shaker extremely convenient to use, as the need for a separate straining device or stirring stick virtually disappears. With a height of 6 7/8 inches and a mixing capacity of 19 3/4 ounces, the Libbey glass strainer mixes simple and complex drinks of all types and makes enough for two or more people to share with a single pass.

Tall and slim, the Trudeau Cosmo cocktail shaker combines liquor, mixers, and ice to produce an expertly mixed drink with a few flicks of the wrist. With a capacity of 25 ounces, this shaker produces enough for multiple guests with one pass. Built-in features like the cap that doubles as a 3-ounce jigger and built-in strainer makes this shaker the only piece of bar equipment needed for an entertaining evening.

One of the most common and classic ways to mix drinks, a standard Mason jar doubles as a highly effective cocktail shaker thanks to the self-sealing lid and screw tight band. These glass jars come in several sizes, ranging from single-serve pints to quart and larger sizes to mix drinks for a larger group. In addition to the standard clear glass, Mason jars also come in blue and rose-colored tints to match a party's decor or personal preference.

Mixing Cocktails: When to Shake and When to Stir

Straight Up Cocktails and Spirits

James Bond. Nick Charles. Although you might admire the style and wit of these legendary cinematic drinkers, you won't necessarily want to copy their mixing techniques. To get the very best results from your bar ingredients, here's a quick guide to when to shake, when to stir, and when to "build" your drinks:

If preparing a mixed drink containing fruit juice, cream, or eggs (but no soda or other carbonated mixers).

Shaking introduces tiny air bubbles into the mixture. This gives drinks containing fruit juice a slightly frothy appearance, and those containing egg whites a foamy, meringue-like head.

Margarita, Cosmopolitan, Daiquiri, Whiskey Sour, Ramos Gin Fizz (here, club soda is added after shaking is complete)

Place ingredients in cocktail shaker. Add ice to fill halfway (I generally use about half a tray of ice). Shake thoroughly - I'll do it for about 30 seconds for a Margarita or a Daiquiri (a Ramos Gin Fizz, on the other hand, is at the extreme end of the spectrum and calls for up to 5 minutes). Strain into a cocktail glass and add garnish. (Next week, we'll be taking a closer look at the two kinds of cocktail shakers: the Boston (pictured above, right) and the cobbler (pictured above, left), with step by step instructions for using each.)

If preparing a drink that contains all-alcoholic ingredients (a true "cocktail" in the historical sense of the term).

No air bubbles or little shards of ice to cloud the clarity of the drink.

Place all ingredients in bottom part of cocktail shaker (or cocktail pitcher or mixing glass), fill shaker with ice cubes, about 3/4 full (I'll often use close to a full tray of ice for the job). Stir with a bar spoon (a long-handled spoon which traditionally has a twisted handle (see pic above), although any long spoon will do in a pinch). Let the mixture "rest" 30 seconds or so in order to allow the alcohol to chill and the ice to melt slightly, creating dilution, then stir again. Strain into a cocktail glass and add garnish.

If the drink contains a carbonated ingredient such as soda (i.e., a highball).

Just a quick stir is all that's needed to blend the ingredients. Because the drink is to be served "on the rocks," there's no need to strain out the ice. This simple, one-step approach of combining alcoholic and carbonated ingredients directly in the drinking glass ensures the drink's fizziness isn't compromised by over-handling.

Add all ingredients to the glass and gently stir with ice.

15 Crushed Ice Cocktails

There's nothing quite as simultaneously relaxing and reviving as a well-made cocktail chilled to perfection over finely crushed ice. From mint juleps to a frosty gin-based watermelon drink, these 15 drinks are some of our favorites to enjoy on a hot summer day. See how to make perfect ice for cocktails »

This vodka-and–ginger beer libation is traditionally served in a copper mug.

Antebellum Mint Julep

Before the Civil War made foreign products hard to come by in the South, French cognac was the preferred liquor in a mint julep.

Punch Romaine, a rum-spiked shaved-ice palate cleanser served to first class passengers during the fateful last dinner aboard the Titanic on April 14th, 1912, was based on a recipe from famed French chef Georges Auguste Escoffier, who championed alcoholic shaved ices during the early twentieth century. The original recipe, essentially a granita, is updated here as a drinkable, citrusy cocktail poured over an iceberg of crushed ice.

This version of the classic three-ingredient cocktail—which combines three parts bourbon to one part of a simple syrup bracingly infused with fresh spearmint—is sanctioned by the Kentucky Derby itself as their official mint julep recipe.

A bright mix of watermelon, gin, Aperol, lemon juice, and a splash of club soda, this drink from Stella Rosa Pizza Bar in Santa Monica is well-balanced, effervescent, and not too sweet.

This Moscow Mule variation is made with gin and mint.

Inspired by a recipe developed by mixologist Lynn House of the Chicago restaurant Blackbird, this is an ideal cocktail to show off the fruity side of Cognac. Peach preserves meld beautifully with the spirit's soft sweetness, while mint adds a bright finish.

Cynar's vegetal bitterness, derived primarily from artichokes, pairs nicely with mint and grapefruit soda in this refreshing julep variation.

Pomegranate juice gives this rum-laced prosecco drink a sweetness that belies its potency.

In addition to using caraway and dill—the most traditional flavors for aquavit—in Sweden, home cooks make the spirit with an infinite variety of spices, herbs, and other flavorful botanicals.

Shiso leaves muddled with spicy Thai red chile and slices of cooling cucumber make for a refreshing and festive cocktail.

The clean, summery aroma of basil completely transforms the classic julep, traditionally made with mint. The drink is also traditionally made with bourbon—here, we replaced that with Jameson Irish whiskey, whose subtle citrus notes intermingle beautifully with the sweet herbs.

This true tin-cup mint julep, from Toronto gastropub The Black Hoof, has a serious spice-bazaar kick.

This richly flavored pomegranate margarita is just as good sipped on a cold day in front of a roaring fire as it is on a balmy afternoon spent on a tropical beach. To deepen the pomegranate flavor, add a little pomegranate concentrate; for a lighter drink, leave it out.

Most Kentuckians insist on serving this drink in sterling silver julep cups, and always with well-crushed ice.
