10 Great Cocktail Shakers

Give the Gift That Keeps on Shaking

When you are shopping for a new cocktail shaker the choices can be overwhelming as there are many styles and designs available.

The first decision is to choose between a 3-piece cocktail shaker and a Boston shaker. The main difference between the two styles is that the cocktail shaker has a built-in strainer and the Boston shaker requires a Hawthorne strainer.

There are also designer and novelty cocktail shakers with all of the function and extra style.

Zack Contas Boston Shaker

The Zack Contas Boston Shaker has one great feature that makes it stand out against other shakers, and that is the measuring scale on the glass. This isn't going to eliminate the need for a jigger for proper measurement.

However, if you want to make three 4-ounce drinks at once you can use the scale, knowing that you should have approximately 12 ounces of liquid in the glass before you add ice. Of course, when you shake or stir, some of that ice will melt and add to the volume, but you will . MORE be assured that your final pour will not be short.

This feature is especially handy when the recipe you are following gives measurements in parts .

Quick Strain Tin

Quick Strain Tins were designed by a seasoned bartender for professionals. The Boston shaker-style mixing tins have straining holes around the rim and eliminate the need for an external strainer.

The tins are available with either a full circumference of ​strainer holes or sectioned strainers. They're very convenient, easy to use, and are inexpensive.

These are one of my favorite sets and it is nice to have a few sets on hand for mixing multiple drinks quickly.

WMF Boston Shaker

The sleek design of the WMF Boston Shaker makes this a stylish addition to any bar. The company is known for displaying high-quality materials in nice, sleek designs, making this shaker one that will stand the test of time.

The stainless steel tin has a delicate, handsome curve that is a perfect fit for the thick mixing glass that also has a scale for measuring. The WMF Boston Shaker is perfect for both the professional and home bar.

Alessi Boston Shaker

For the experienced bartender who enjoys a little style in their shaker, this one from Alessi is a great choice.

There is nothing truly spectacular about it, but the subtle bevel on both the glass and tin bases are just enough to give this shaker a great, sleek, modern design. It holds up to 17 ounces, so it is also great for shaking a few drinks at once.

Released in the summer of 2015, Shaker 33 is an interesting new take on the classic 3-piece shaker design.

Made from a high-quality, durable plastic called Tritan, ​Shaker 33 does not get frosty cold like stainless steel shakers. The lid has a tight seal and the removable strainer is designed to be very efficient.

Mixologist World Cocktail Shaker

This 3-piece shaker from Mixologist World is a very basic design that is perfect for the beginner.

As an introductory cocktail shaker, this is a new favorite. The stainless steel construction is very rugged and seems durable enough to last for years. It holds up to 24-ounces and will also fit the average pint glass so you can quickly convert it into a Boston shaker.

Trudeau Cosmo Cocktail Shaker

One of the traditional cocktail shakers, this 3-piece shaker adds a touch style to the original design.

The cap is the best feature of this stainless steel shaker. It is a 3-step jigger that measures either 1/2, 1, and 2 ounces, eliminating the need for a separate jigger.

Metrokane Bullet Cocktail Shaker

Step back to the 1930's with the bullet shaker design.

Available in a small 16-ounce and larger 28-ounce sizes, this polished stainless steel cocktail shaker is a perfect gift for the art deco lover. The integral strainer and drip-free spout filters ingredients and minimizes spilling.

Oggi Cocktail Shaker

Oggi makes a great line of 3-piece shakers that each has a different design element.

Pictured is the Marilyn Tall & Slim design, but they also have shakers with faux diamonds, mosaics, beads, and painted glass. There is a style for everyone and they are all a good quality at a very reasonable price.

OXO 360 Cocktail Shaker

Here's a 2-piece shaker with a built-in strainer -- for years the Metrokane Flip-Top fit the bill, which has a nice and convenient design. However, this OXO 360 shaker is just a little bit better.

With the OXO 360, you get the convenience of a strainer inside the lid and it is a just a matter of pushing a button to open the shaker to strain your drink.

The operation of this shaker is very similar to a coffee thermos and it produces a clean, steady stream. As with any of these shakers, there is . MORE a tendency for ice to jam up inside the strainer, but that is nothing a little shake can't fix.

If IKEA had a bar, they’ll be serving these fun lingonberries cocktails

It’s here! 2016. And I hope you’re having a wonderful time ushering in the new year.

I was spring cleaning to welcome 2016 and unearthed this: A bottle of Absolut. It’s been standing at the back row of my shelf for years, begging me to take a sip of it. I did once and thought “yowza, whatzzit? Horse pee?” Sorry, vodka lovers.

But not being one to waste, I figured there must be some more palatable ways to drink this poison. Google gave me my answers. It seems vodka is like BFF with lingonberry syrup. I’ve yet to try these drinks recipes but I am definitely grabbing some DRYCK LINGON on my next trip to IKEA.

Sparking Lingonberry Cosmo

First stop is XOJane. Claire Lower and her list of hacktails using IKEA syrups and drinks won my heart. She concocts the Sparkling Lingonberry Cosmo made from these ingredients.

• 2 oz. of vodka
• 0.75 oz. of lingonberry concentrate (DRYCK LINGON)
• The juice of half a lemon
• Soda water to top

In an ice-filled shaker, mix the first 3 ingredients together. Strain into a cocktail glass, top up with soda. Serve. See full recipe here.

Here’s another version of the lingonberry cosmo. Or if you really want to up the ante and serve it like the Icebar Stockholm, try this in the rocks version.

Dala Horse Cocktail

Susannah of FeastandWest.com gives the Moscow Mule a twist and turns it into a Dala Horse Cocktail. This looks yummy and the blend of sweet-tart-bitter-spicy flavours will be head bending at the very least. You’ll need:

• 1 ounce lingonberry syrup (DRYCK LINGON)
• ½ ounce fresh lime juice (equivalent to 1 tablespoon or about half a lime)
• 2 ounces vodka
• crushed ice
• 4 to 6 ounces ginger beer, chilled
• Lime slices

First, you fill the bottom of the glass with the lingonberry syrup. Stir in lime juice and vodka. Then top up with crushed ice. To get that two tone effect, slowly pour in the ginger beer. See full recipe here.

Lingonberry Margarita Cocktail

The last on my list is a Margarita. No vodka here but Margaritas have always been my poison of choice.

• 1/2 ounce orange liqueur
• 1-1/2 ounce tequila
• 1 ounce lime juice
• 1/4 ounce simple syrup
• 2 teaspoon lingonberry preserves (SYLT LINGON)
• 1 lime wheel and piece of candied ginger to garnish
• 1/2 teaspoon powdered ginger
• 2 tablespoons sea salt
• Lime wedge

To add to the list, any cranberry based cocktail, like a cape codder or seabreeze could be easily converted to lingonberry with the DRYCK LINGON. Both are basically cranberry/lingonberry juice added to vodka, and the later also has grapefruit juice. Mixing the citron vodka with DRYCK LINGON may result in something close to a Lingon Seabreeze, I suspect.

On a side note, I was disappointed some years ago when Ikea changed lingonberry (SYLT) manufacturers. The prior brand was so much better – with more definable and flavorful lingonberries – than what they sell today. If Ikea is listening…

Ok if you want an ornament .

The worst product I have ever bought, it is impossible to open . Thought it was just stiff initially because it was new. It's in the bin, total waste of money .

Brilliant cocktail shaker

I have had a plastic shaker in the past so this metal one is far better, will not split over time like my old one. Good value for money. The top is slightly tight to start with and loosenes over time but at least no cocktails spilt.

Lovely item but no!

Made a few delicious cocktails but I should have listen to previous reviews, the lid jammed fully on & that was that. Item was returned for a refund

Industrial designer Carter McGuyer found his calling when he spotted an iconic, surrealist stool by a late-twentieth century designer on the cover of a design magazine. ‘It was so beautiful and unique for that time, it made me realize that this is what I want to do,’ he says. Then a student at Auburn University, McGuyer promptly changed majors from architecture to industrial design.

Based in northwest Alabama, he went on to form the Carter McGuyer Design Group in 2006, which designs products that are equal parts beautiful, functional and cost-efficient—many of which live in the kitchen drawer. Defining his work as clean, tailored and modern, McGuyer has received numerous accolades for his work, including the 2013 Housewares Design Award for Best in Category and 2013 Red Dot Design Award.

An IKEA-Inspired Cocktail Recipe: Rhubarb Margarita

IKEA is known for being intuitive to small space design and budget-minded shoppers. Apparently they are also in tune with the intense feeling of anxiety one experiences when approximately a third of the way through their store, thus requiring a stiff drink upon departure. So I was thrilled to find they offer two fun and cheap mixers along with those Swedish meatballs and dollar soft serves at check out. You see, everyone wins at the end of the IKEA maze.

Best known for being a sidekick to strawberries in pie, rhubarb alone isn't so popular. In the raw, it's is sour and acidic. But take that iridescent orangey pink stalk, douse it with sugar and a pinch of salt, and bake into a dessert, and voila! How you like me now? That same sweet mixture of melted sugar and tangy stalks can easily be applied to lots of fun cocktails, including the summer staple -the margarita.

IKEA even simplified rhubarb. They took all the work of trimming, cubing, and cooking out of the equation with their SAFT RABARBER ("Rhubarb syrup," for those of us who don't speak Swedish). This is a very sweet rhubarb simple syrup.

Skip the Cointreau and reach for the SAFT RABARBER for a yummy IKEA- inspired happy hour. They also have an Elderflower syrup, both for about $5, making for fun and inexpensive mixers to add to your bar.

Trust me, if you're headed there this weekend you'll surely need a drink afterwards. This one is ideal for a quick and tasty 10-minute happy hour.

Rhubarb Margarita

4 ounces tequila

2 ounces lime juice

1 1/2 to 2 ounces Rhubarb Syrup

Lime wedges, for garnish

Pink sea salt for rimming the glass, optional (See Recipe Note)

In an ice-filled shaker, combine the tequila, lime juice, and rhubarb syrup. Shake until well-chilled and strain into glasses filled with ice. Garnish with lime wedge.

Recipe Notes

• If using salt for the rim, run a wedge of lime flesh side facing the rim of the glass all the way around it to lightly moisten. Then dip the rim of the glass into the salt before adding the ice and the mixed drink.
