Coco Loco (Colombian Coconut Cocktail)

This post is also available in Spanish

I have a killer summer cocktail for you today called “Coco Loco“! Coco Loco is a Colombian Coconut Cocktail, popular on the Caribbean coast of the country. Coco Loco literally translates to “Crazy Coconut“. This drink is usually sold by vendors around the beach who make them right in front of you while you wait.

They take a fresh coconut and make a hole in the top with a machete, and then prepare the delicious and fresh Coco Loco for you. They always serve this cocktail in fresh coconuts, the presentation is beautiful and the drink is absolutely amazing!

I didn’t have fresh coconuts today so, I served it in a totuma and mason jars, but if you can find fresh coconuts use them as a serving glass and your guests will love you for it.

There are different variations of Coco Loco throughout the country and every vendor has his or her own recipe for it, but its pretty much a cocktail made with rum, tequila, vodka, lime juice, coconut cream, coconut water and ice cubes.

I hope you enjoy making this Coco Loco cocktail. It is extremely refreshing for summertime parties or just sitting on the porch reading a magazine.

About 4 servings

Ice cubes as needed

1/4 cup rum or to your taste

1/4 cup vodka or to your taste

1/4 cup tequila or to your taste

2 cups coconut cream

1 cup coconut water

Juice of 3 limes

Lime slices to serve

Directions

  1. Place all the ingredients, except the ice and lime slices, in a blender, and blend for a few seconds, or until smooth.
  2. Pour into a glass or a fresh coconut. Garnish with a lime slice and serve immediately.

I tried this drink and it was a little sour for my taste. What can be done to make it a little sweeter?

Coco Loco

The Coco Loco -- Spanish for crazy coconut -- is a tropical cocktail, which normally includes rum, coconut milk, and pineapple juice. Bartenders in Mexico will often include tequila in the recipe, while other areas will include vodka or gin. Liqueurs, such as coffee liqueur or banana liqueur, are often used as well.

  • 1 oz dark rum
  • 1 oz light rum
  • ½ oz vodka
  • ½ oz creme de bananes
  • ½ oz pineapple juice
  • ½ oz coconut cream
  • ½ oz sugar syrup

Pour the rums, vodka, creme de bananes, pineapple juice, coconut cream and sugar syrup into a cocktail shaker half-filled with ice cubes. Shake well, and strain into a chilled highball glass. Garnish with a pineapple wedge, and serve.

  • 1 oz dark rum
  • 1 oz light rum
  • 1½ oz tequila
  • ½ oz Kahlua coffee liqueur
  • 3½ oz pineapple juice
  • 3½ oz coconut water

With an ice pick, poke out two eyes of a coconut shell and drain out the coconut water. Cut off the top of the coconut as you would cut off the top of a pumpkin for carving. In a blender put tequila, light rum, dark rum, Kahlua, fruit juices and crushed ice. Blend until frothy and pour into the coconut shell. Pour a small float of 151-proof rum over the top of the drink. Garnish with pineapple slice, maraschino cherry, and two lime wedges. Serve with straws. Serves 2.

    Coco Loco

Indianapolis bartender Ryan Puckett combines his penchant for tiki cocktails with a childhood favorite, orange soda floats; the result is this tropical orange-cream soda. "I'd make orange soda floats with my grandma, so that flavor pairing is something I've always loved," he says. • 1 ounce Coco López sweetened cream of coconut
    • 1 ounce heavy cream

    • Small pinch of freshly grated nutmeg, for garnish

    How to Make It

This is a recreation of a beverage that was served at a hotel in the Dominican Republic. At this specific place, the Coco Loco was pre-made and dispensed from a slush machine. This recipe uses unsweetened coconut cream, like that used in cooking, rather than Coco Lopez or coconut milk.

    Coco Loco Recipe?

Does anyone have the recipe for the coco loco? I looked on the internet, but the recipes I'm finding are a fruity drink. The Coco Locos at Bavaro Princess were more of a milky, creamy frozen drink. Anyone know?

Hi there - I think the base is coconut cream from a can with lots of ice & white rum.

Put the whole lot in a liquidizer and away you go - aim for a slushy texture and drink through a straw.

You can also get canned coconut milk which you use for cooking curry & other sauces but this isn't milky enough for the cocoloco so best use the coconut cream . bb

The Coco Loco's at Sunscape The Beach had a hint of cinnamon to them also.

Thank you! I thought they told me it had Creame De Coco in them, Rum and then something else. I just can't seem to remember. And I can't forget the chocolate around the glass! AAAH! Thank so much!

Hi i went on a marinarium trip while i was stayin in punta cana and they amde it fresh infront of us. Its fresh coconut, ice, milk, sugar, and brugal (dominican rum) hope this helps. By the way do you know the recipe for mama juana? my email is xxaimzxx8@hotmail.com

I don't know that recipe - but doesn't it have the spices and jerked wood, etc. in it? Did you try it? I was afraid! HA!

Coco Loco is made from fresh coconut water,it's not the milk from the dried coconuts.they add about 4-7 different kinds of white liquor.similar to a Long Island ice tea without the splash of coke. You will have to experiment a little to see what kinds of liquor you like the best,it's was originally made by a bartender in Mexico,my first was in Acapulco 22 years ago and it lasted for 5 hrs,i had to keep adding ice to it. yes..it was that strong.

Get out! Holy heck! I'm never gonna figure this out! I was hoping it was like 3 things slapped into a cup with chocolate on it!

AIMZ - you're probably right - you scouse git!

It can be made this way I am sure 'cause I've see it done this way too

Drink of the Week: Coco Loco

Some years ago on vacation in the Dominican Republic we discovered the tastiest of cocktails at the swim-up bar: the Coco Loco. The bartender whipped up a bunch of booze and, presumably, coconut milk, and served it to us in a fresh coconut with a straw poking out of a hole in the top. The drink was so yummy — and free (hello, all-inclusive!) — the next thing we knew we’d ordered a couple more and were “loco” (Spanish for crazy) from the coco in no time.

This is how they serve them in the Caribbean. In Canada, a wine glass works fine.

I had no idea what the other ingredients in a Coco Loco might be, but I guessed rum was involved. So when I received a bottle of Malibu’s original coconut flavoured rum I decided to try and replicate the DR’s deliciousness at home.

I discovered that Coco Loco recipes vary widely. Some call for vodka in addition to rum (for a Coco muy Loco), others include creme de bananas and still more omit the pineapple altogether. I settled for a recipe featuring amaretto, hoping to capture that sweet, slightly nutty flavour I recalled.

While my version is pretty good — sweet, tart pineapple and creamy coconut with a hint of almonds — I liked the DR Coco Loco better. Must be the coconut cup!

I like Malibu in this drink instead of regular light rum. It adds an extra “coconuttiness” and makes up for the lack of coconut cream.

    • 1-1/2 oz Malibu
    • 1/2 oz amaretto
    • 2 oz coconut cream (I used canned coconut milk)
    • 1 oz simple syrup
    • 1/2 cup fresh pineapple (or 1 oz pineapple juice)
    • 6 ice cubes

Combine ingredients in a blender and puree until smooth and frothy. Pour into a wine glass (or hollowed-out coconut) and garnish with a pineapple wedge.

Looks tasty! So what is the difference between a Pina colada and this drink? The amaretto? Which do you like better? Since Pina Colada’s are my favorite drink this is very important!

Must be the amaretto! Coco Locos are delish.
