Essie Envy

Essie Winter 2011 - Cocktail Bling Collection

Cocktail Bling

Bangle Jangle

For some reason this Winter I've been really into greyed-out purple polishes. I couldn't make my mind up over which ones to get, so in my last sparklecanada haul I ordered a bunch and Bangle Jangle was one of them. The formula of Bangle Jangle surprised me since it was very opaque on the first coat! I was expecting this formula to be exactly like Cocktail Bling since they are both grey toned colours, but its not. It's a bit thicker making it more opaque. I like it, it's easy to work with. If I had done a thicker coat it would have been opaque in one coat but I did two thinner coats.

School of Hard Rocks

This was the first polish from this collection that I lusted after and I fell hard for. Once I finally got it about two years ago, I was more than impressed with the formula! It's very opaque and easy to apply. It is opaque in one coat if you do a bit thicker of coat. I decided to do two thin coats and got it perfectly smooth and opaque. It self levels really well. This is a great formula and colour (which you'll notice is a theme in these last 3 polishes).

Bobbing for Baubles

Bobbing for Baubles was my first ever post here on Essie Envy! (don't judge my super nubbly short nails ;) ) I loved this dusty navy blue then and still do now. It's a polish that is perfectly smooth, creamy and opaque in one coat. You don't even need to do a thicker coat to achieve it. Fantastic formula!

Size Matters

Size Matters was another polish from this collection that I lusted after for a lonnnnnnnggggg time. Much longer than I had to wait for School of Hard Rocks. I'm so in love with this deep red with just a hint of a berry tone. I just about pooped my pants last Spring when I found this polish at Dollarama for $3! I honestly couldn't believe my luck. The formula is not too thick but very opaque. It's another one from this collection that is completely opaque in one coat but I went for two just to make double sure that I had the richness of the red in the bottle. It's super smooth and self-leveling.

We have another month of Winter shades to go before Essie releases their transitional Resort collection, so I will happily be wearing these polishes in the meantime. Do you have any polishes from this collection? What were your thoughts?

Thanks for this post, Kindra! I love so many of the colors in this collection. I missed out on Bobbing for Baubles when it was out and have had a hard time locating it. However, after seeing your comparisons, I knew it was one I needed to add to my collection!

Yes fantastic idea Jess! I think I will do that for sure.

I don't have any of these, but I've been wanting Cocktail Bling. Didn't realize how it was similar to Petal Pushers, which I also want.

So Resort Collection is next, then is there a regular spring collection? And there's summer neons, and is there a regular summer collection too?

Alison - Yes Petal Pushers and Cocktail Bling look like they are the same colour, just a few shades different from one another. Petal Pushers has the superior formula in my opinion.

Love Bobbing for Baubles. Its just edgy enough without looking to brash - at least in my opinion anyway. (lol)

Wow, I already own three of these (possibly four. Can't remember if I own brooch the subject) didn't know they were from the same collection. And i might have just ordered size matters based on this post. And am maybe considering school of hard rocks too

Essie Winter 2011 Cocktail Bling Collection Swatches!

For more pictures and reviews of each shade click the Read More button below!

Bobbing for Baubles is a rich navy. I adore this one, are we surprised by that? haha! This shade seems to be pretty hot for Fall/Winter this year! The formula on this one was great, I used 2 coats for the photos below. It dried super shiny as you can see in the first photo with the trees and whatnot reflecting on my nails!

Brooch The Subject is a beige nude. I can't decide if this works with my skintone or not, when I was wearing it I loved it. now looking at the pics, not so much. This could be a fantastic mannequin hands type of polish for someone, it kind of looks like I'm wearing liquid foundation on my nails. The formula was pretty good on this one, a little streaky on the first coat but it evened out on the second. I used 2 coats for the photos below.

Cocktail Bling is a very greyed out blue. This one is a bit of a minx, depending on the light it either looked very blue or very grey. I love shades like this, you have to give them a second look. The formula on this was great, 2 easy coats!

School Of Hard Rocks is a dusty blue green. This is my favorite of the collection, I like it so much that I'm thinking I might need a backup bottle. I'm so glad I got this in a full size bottle and not a mini like some from this collection. Great formula on this one also, I used 2 coats!

Size Matters is a bright blue toned red. meh, it's red. it's been done about a bazillion times. Do I need another. no. I do laugh at the name of it though, good enough reason for me to own it I suppose. The formula was good, 2 coats!

So what do you guys think? My favorites are School of Hard Rock, Bobbing for Baubles and Cocktail Bling! The other three polishes I could live without! I think this collection is fab for winter, I do love all the dusty shades! I really enjoy what Essie has been putting out lately! I hope they continue putting out great collections!

I'm sorry but these colors are so boring. . I'm looking forward to the Luxeffects polishes though! Great swatches, but I'm not going to buy.

I have bobbing for baubles, size matters and love school of hard rocks the most!

I just hauled some Essie earlier this morning and I should have waited. I really like Cocktail Bling now!

Size matters is one of the prettiest reds I've seen in a long time. And it's beautiful on you for sure! I too love School of Hard Rock.

School of Hard Rocks is on its way to me now! I'm so glad I ordered it -- it looks gorgeous here! How does Bobbing for Baubles compare to Chanel Blue Rebel, btw?

I don't own that Chanel. $29 a bottle is way too expensive for my taste so I passed on it lol. Hopefully someone that owns both can do a comparison for you!

So far I got School of Hard Rocks and Bobbing for Baubles from this collection, though now I'm thinking I need Cocktail Bling.  :D  I love shades like that!  And yep, I too am super excited for the Luxeffects.  I'm nervously awaiting the release like my life is depending on owning them all, lol!  XD  I need them!

These were on sale for $4 each (plus shipping) on Transdesign.com  so I bought them all. Really pretty but not super exciting.

Yeah, I'm looking for a cheaper alternative! Maybe the Nubar dupes will suffice. Thanks anyway!

I think I saw a comparison on ALU and they were pretty close!

I love Bangle Jangle! I just swatched that one for my blog. Would love if you could follow me :)

I love school of hard rocks, such a nice color!

I really love this collection by Essie, all the colors are fabulous. And I continually giggle at the name of Size Matters. Because I'm cool like that. ;>

I have looked at this and nothing really grabs me about any of them. I have a huge space problem right now for my stash and and not buying just to collect unless the shades really grab me and are going to get wear as well as give me something I don't have something like in shade/finish. The blue-green and the mulberry shades are the only ones that really interest me. I think I will pass and wait for their holiday collection.

I love this collection! It is soo beautiful! I am not a fan of reds, so I'm gonna skip this one, but it still is pretty. Yes, I'm calling a boring red which belongs to a color group I don't like, pretty. Because it is.

My favorite is bobbing for baubles, followed by bangle jangle, followed by  cocktail bling ;) then school of hard rocks, then the nude one and the red one.

I got BfB, BJ and CB today in the mail :))

Now the most difficult thing is, which will I wear first .

I really like Bobbing for Baubles & Size Matters, but I feel like I have polishes very similar. If possible, can you compare BfB with China Glaze First Mate? Seems like BfB is a little dustier but I can't tell. Thank you for posting these!

I picked up "Bobbing for Baubles" even though I feel like I have something pretty similar. I couldn't remember what that might be, so I decided not to take the risk (first world problems, anyone?) of missing out on it!

I have school of hard rocks and cocktail bling. LOVE! Now I'm thinking I should have gotten bobbing for baubles too. It's completely gorgeous on you!

I really like Cocktail Bling and School of Hard Rocks, and I'm always a sucker for beige skin colors, too, so Brooch the Subject is a winner, too. As far as "reds" go, I think no matter how many times we think a red has been done, it's always slightly different. Just a matter of taste. I don't like dark dark muted navy. My fave blue is NARS Midnight Express, and that is, by far, the BEST navy ever. It's like India ink in a polish. Awesome. So I can see why some people like Bobbing for Baubles, it's not my cup of tea.

Before I read what your wrote on Brooch The Subject the first thing I thought was liquid foundation. I kid you not LOL. Too funny!! This is a really pretty collection. I wasn't into doing nail art when this one hit the stores so I missed it. but I found some of them on Ebay. I may just have to buy a couple of them. =)

I wonder how Bobbing for Baubles compares to After School Boy Blazer and OPI Incognito in Sausalito? And how School Of Hard Rocks compares to Vested Interest?

Cocktail Bling is a classic Essie shade. It is a very pretty pale grey with blue tones - cool and icy. It has a creme finish and is opaque in two coats, drying quickly to a shiny finish. It has an excellent formula, applying very easily with no streaks or patches. Only a light hand and thin coats are needed with this polish. This colour is very classic and pretty, I believe it would suit all skin tones, particularly those with cool skin tones. It is suitable for conservative environments. It lasted on my nails for 4 days, less than the 5 days I expect from Essies, however I was heavy on my hands while I was wearing this and believe that on a normal week it would have lasted the 5 days very well. I can happily recommend this Essie cult favourite.

Gorgeous cool toned grey with a hint of blue. Office appropriate, if that matters to you. Has a nice shine, even without a topcoat, and good formula for an Essie. I think it's a color that can be worn at any time of the year, even if you're a seasonal polish wearer. I especially like this cool color on a hot humid day. One of my favorite Essie's of all times and highly recommended.

Beautiful, versatile shade of grey with the usual Essie formula, which works great for me. Not much to be said here, I think this is worth having.

The PERFECT mix of blue and grey! From the Winter 2011 Collection, Essie's Cocktail Bling is a soft, medium/pale bluish-grey creme with a creme finish. The shade is unusual without being weird-looking. Borderline-conservative, but not boring at all. It looks beautiful on the nail, very flattering and perfect for year-round wear.

I love the color! It is a light bluish grey color that pulls purple in certain lightings. Great staying power! I bought the mini version and would definitely repurchase in full size if I can find it. I have yellow undertones and usually stick with warm tones. Cool tones usually wash me out but this looks so flattering on my nails! Absolutely love it!

I love this nail polish. It is so easy to apply. I absolutely love the colour - opaque within 2 coats. It also lasted quite a while, even though I tend to ruin my nail polish within minutes. And though the colour was released with the winter collection, I think this could be worn in other seasons. Really pretty, different, but not too out there.

Gorgeous grey-blue colour. I find the durability of Essie polishes hit and miss, this colour lasted me 4 days with no chips (2 coats, no top coat). The brush is small but application is easy.

Found this on clearance from the Wintter 2011 collection for 4 dollars! It's a blue-toned gray. I love the color, the application. Very different but the formula of the polish seems to be great quality. My Ma didn't care for the color but I think it's pretty unique.

This is a great soft grey with blue undertones on my NW15-20 skin. Were it not for the blue undertones this would be a great staple in my book but I can't wear it with all of my clothings. It's nice if you need a professional color but don't want to sport a sheer neutral. It's a creme finish and applies nicely.

Essie Winter 2011 Cocktail Bling Collection

I love this collection. The colours are great, as is the formula (2 coats shown). Surprisingly, I did not have close dupes for most of these, so the comparisons might not be too useful to you, but I thought I should show them anyways to help you get an idea of the colours.

Essie School of Hard Rocks - I was dying for this colour. I think it's awesome. For someone who has a lot of teals, I was really surprised to find I didn't have anything as greyed out as this shade.

Comparison: Essie School of Hard Rocks and Misa Dirty Sexy Money - I decided to compare it to one of my fav dusty teals. Totally different.

Comparison: Essie School of Hard Rocks, Orly Sapphire Silk, and CND Urban Oasis - This was requested by a reader. I don't have OPI STWD anymore XD

Essie Bangle Jangle - Nice greyed out purple.

Comparison: Essie Bangle Jangle and OPI Done Out In Deco - I had been wondering what this polish would look like against one of my favourite light purples, DOID. Turns out, the OPI is a tad warmer. I'm not sure which one I like better, though.

Comparison: Essie Bangle Jangle and Essie St Lucia Lilac - Compared with another favourite light purple of mine, Essie SLL is really different from Bangle Jangle. I feel fine keeping both :D

Essie Cocktail Bling - Yummm. Greyed out periwinkle, almost?

Comparison: Essie Cocktail Bling and Zoya Caitlin - The closest shade I have to Cocktail Bling was Zoya Caitlin from earlier this year. As you can see, though, the Zoya is much much darker (although very awesome in its own right). Love both.

Essie Size Matters - I'm always on the hunt for a good red to go with my skintone, and I think this one is great. Very blue-toned red, it almost seems raspberry on me.

Comparison: Essie Size Matters and Essie Limited Addiction - I find photographing reds to be a challenge. Actually, these are not as close as they appear. Limited Addiciton is quite a bit warmer and Size Matters is definitely blue compared to it. Both have a lovely formula though!

Essie Bobbing for Baubles - Beautiful dark blue polish. I thought it might be close to American Apparel Passport Blue, but I gave that away a while ago, so I couldn't do a comparison.

Comparison: Essie Bobbing for Baubles and Misa Office Polish-tics - the closest thing I still own was this Misa (which I adore). The Essie is really dark, but doesn't look black.

Essie Brooch the Subject - The only one I was waffling on was this nude. I don't think I like it that much on my skin tone, to be honest.

Comparison: Essie Brooch the Subject and Essie Jazz - I compared it to one of my favourite nudes, Essie Jazz. BtS is quite a bit yellower than Jazz.

Comparison: Essie Brooch the Subject and Orly Country Club Khaki - Compared to my other favourite nude, Orly CCK, BtS is also quite yellow compared to the Orly!

So, there you have it. I highly recommend this collection. It might be boring if you're not a creme-lover, but if you are. woo baby! If you guys have any suggestions for additional comparisons, let me know! I'll try to do the comparisons if I own the polishes :)

I hope this was helpful!

very helpful! and great swatches as always.  My favs are blues and teal

I've been following your blog for awhile.  Amazing swatches!!  I'm a creme girl and a I love blues so this collection is perfect for me!! I bought School of Hard Rocks and Cocktail Bling this weekend.  Gorgeous in person!!  I didn't want to completely binge but I've changed my mind and going to go back for Bobbing for Baubles.  If OPI has Warm and Fozzie out, those are the two I'm picking up.  I'm loving the Winter 2011 collections this year!!

Love the comparion post. Great help. Thanks for taking the time.

Great comparison post! Love the detailed pictures! Thanks!

OMG I love all of these. They looks amazing! Thanks for the comparisons

I did a mani with SOHR and Bobbing for Baubles-they just go so well together. I haveyet to wear size matters but I have it. The rest are too light and happy for me!

Girl. Brooch the Subject looks fab on you!  I have it, but haven't tried it yet. I'm holding out hope it will be my perfect nude!

Ahhhhhhhhh so gorgeous! Thanks for the comparisons, lady -- I'm going to have to grab a few of these soon. <3

Omg I love your posts and I love Essie, so this post put me in heaven! I have heard BfB compared to Zoya Kelly and Suzi Skis in the Pyranese?? Would like to know what you think of those comparisons :) thanks for all your wonderful work!

Personally I think Brooch the Subject is your perfect nude and matches your skin tone - and I like that!  Trying to resist this collection. it's hard!  Thanks for awesome swatches and comparisons!

Very nice swatches and I really appreciate the comparisons! I too am a teal lover so it would be great to see School of Hard Rocks compared to some of your other teals -- maybe OPI Ski Teal We Drop, Orly Sapphire Silk and CND can't remember the name (urban??)

Thanks for the beautiful swatches! Your comparisons really helped, I was really wondering about Cocktail Bling and Caitlin! Of course, more cremes are always good, especially ones that apply beautifully (:

I agree! And I love that dusty periwinkle-type shade :D

Hi Karen! I added a comparison of SoHR with Orly SS and CND Urban Oasis. I already swapped my OPI STWD, so I couldn't compare that, but it's a lot darker than any of those shown, IIRC.

Haha, I'll give it another look ;) Thanks!

I don't have SSitP, but I used to have Kelly. This is the comp I did of the Misa with Zoya Kelly; they were pretty close in shade, but a bit different in undertones: https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgUkUT-LmG8eNywd30bmHd9tnObl7T_zyugHX6-DT2O6hTf5h6c2w1ulgv2gmOUdiLM_PRfxOCurA6gLERcDDfG7DNdwbw0BVvGlWKzHycWpOYyvaa5oF4K4nwyCe_V8rJ7UC6tH9jOvfp5/s800/DSC_5601.JPG

\o/ Love this collection!

I guess I will need to reconsider BtS. haha

Nooo not too light and happy, they are lovely. You should try them XD

*high five* Blue-creme lovers unite! :D

At first I was not that impressed with Essie's fall and winter collections, I mean, all cremes, a bit boring eh? Yeah, right. These are so classy and chic that I've ended up buying the whole winter collection and 4 out o 6 from the fall collection haha. Love them all.

hahahahhaa, you are a slave to Essie!

Originally, my plan was to only get Baubing for Baubles, but this post has me wanting them all!  Thanks for the great post!

As always your pictures and comparisons are amazing!

Great swatches. Now I need a few of those!

Thanks for the comparisons, so helpful! Although I might need to stop reading your blog if I want to control my polish buying, lol.

I think I'll have to cave and get SoHR after all, definitely much lighter/more dusty than the OPI and very different from the Orly (which I have thanks to your earlier review, and I looove it!)

I was also wavering over Bobbing for Baubles and Misa Office Polish-tics has been on my want list for awhile now so it's nice to see that comparison. I think I prefer the dusty quality of the Misa.

Gosh, I went and purchase the entire collection today. Your swatches definitely helped. I love that your pictures are always so clear. I always seem to put a * on your entries to go back and look at, when polish shopping. You also tend to purchase what I have/will purchase, I love your blog!! :)

Thanks you for comparing Essie BtB & Jazz!!

I think I like Jazz more:)

Hi! I don't speak Spanish, but I think I understand your question thanks to Google Translate. I think you are asking about the "gap" left between the nail polish and nail cuticle? In pictures, the gap appears wider than it looks in real life. The main purpose, for me, is to keep nail polish off my cuticle and skin. If I don't do this, my nail polish tends to lift at the cuticle, which means my polish doesn't last as long. I also think it looks more neat, from a normal distance :) I hope that helps answer your question! :)

thanks you f or your anwers I imagin abouth the your manicure and the your have the avec peoblen  paint neils polish lift the cuticle thank your anwer. I hope your undertand my ingles not is very good

More Product Info

When it comes to nail polish, it doesn’t get any better than Essie! Fun options like Peace Daiquiri, Chocolate Kisses, Vermillion and Penny Talks will make any manicure stand out because of the excitement and personality this brand exhibits. Whether you want a classy nude look, a mirror-like metallic, dashes of ladylike shading, explosions of neon or a shimmery sparkle, Image Beauty offers the perfect Essie color polish to meet your style needs. Create endless colorful designs and pictures on your nails using our Essie nail polish from the brand’s most popular collections.

Essie is a must-have label of nail products because of its’ reccurring presence on the red carpet. You can find the nail polish on the hands of celebrities such as Sarah Hyland, Allison Williams and Julia Louis-Dreyfus. The brand has an active influence in fashion, frequently seen during Fashion Week and featured on the runway. One Essie color we retail at a discounted sale price is a shade called Butler Please, which won Allure Magazine’s beauty award for the best bright blue nail polish.

The Essie brand was developed by Essie Weingarten, who moved to Las Vegas with her nail polish color ideas. While there, she became inspired by the limo scene of the city and created shades to fit the style. The sale of Essie products grew high and the brand became extremely popular by many. Since 1981, Essie continues to be a leading nail salon expert – which is why we continue to retail it.

On the Other Hand

Keep in mind that polish is not the only product that will make your hands look amazing. For example, Essie also makes Smoothies – hand creams that come in delicious flavors such as Kiwi, Guava and Mango. These lotions are infused with delectable ingredients that are combined to quench dry skin. For nail treatments, our Essie products can do the job. Make your manicure easier with Treatment Instant Dry Oil and Treatment to Dry For by Essie, which helps wet nails dry faster. Give your nails nutrients and maintenance with Essie Billion Nails Treatment and Essie Trillion Nails Treatment.

Along with Essie, another great product for the hands is the Nat Clean Manicure Revitalize, which is an oral tablet that provides nourishing botanicals for youthful-appearing hands. Clean and nurture yourself with the Naturally Clean Hand Wash to hydrate the skin. Don’t forget about our awesome hair styling products to match those beautiful hands – we sell hot tools like hair crimpers to create the perfect look. Make your hands soft to the touch and your nails an expression of self with Essie and other beauty products on sale at our supply store!
