Godfather Cocktail

When I was going to bartending school (seemed like a good idea at the time), I liked the different drinks that were new to me. As I was in college, I was familiar with the standards, your Old Fashioneds, your Mai Tais, your Margaritas, those were old hat. What intrigued me were the new-fangled (only new to me, as they were all classics) drinks. One of my favorites? Oh, that’s easy. See, my final drink of the night (when not a Whisky Sour) used to always be whatever amaretto booze you have on the rocks. Imagine my delight when there was a cocktail with that plus Scotch. Oh yes. Allow me to reintroduce you to the Godfather.

I’d like to wax long and poetic about the majesty of this cocktail — talk about how complicated and fancy the preparation is and all of that. Sadly, I can’t.

It’s dead simple.

Though, as I’ve gotten a little more experience in life, I’ve come to realize that it’s not the complicated things that taste good, it’s the simple things. Celebrating the simplicity of ingredients, food and preparations really do make some amazing meals.

With this you’re going to need all of two ingredients: amaretto liqueur and Scotch. As you only have two, don’t skimp here.

Luckily, our friends from Usquaebach hooked us up with their Reserve Premium Blend, so we were set on the Scotch front of the cocktail. The smokiness, notes of vanilla and spices worked perfectly for this.

Then it was just a matter of our amaretto liqueur and we were good to go!

This, for me, is a perfect after (or before, or during) drink. A little sweet, a little smoky, a lot of awesome.

Godfather Cocktail Recipe

An easy drink for lovers of Scotch cocktails. [Photographs: Michael Dietsch]

This simple drink became popular in the 1970s, though no one's really sure of its origins. Some stories say it was inspired by the famous gangster film of the same name; others say that the Don himself, Marlon Brando, drank it regularly. I don't know if we'll ever know the truth of the tale.

Some people like equal parts of both ingredients, but I find that to be too sweet. The Godfather has a cousin in the Rusty Nail (made with Scotch and Drambuie), and with both drinks, I prefer to mix them drier than the 50-50 specification.

The Godfather is a nice and simple drink that is perfect for those times when you feel like mixing a good Scotch.

The great thing about this easy mixed drink is that it does not disguise the whisky; instead, it merely enhances it with a little flavor. It's good with some of mid- to high-range blended Scotch, though you may want to try your favorite single malt as well.

One could make the connection with "The Godfather" movies because this drink uses the sweet Italian liqueur, amaretto. It also has a slow-sipping feel. One could easily imagine it as a drink Don Corleone might have at his desk while considering favors on his daughter's wedding day.

Appropriately, the Godmother is essentially the same cocktail, just a little softer, and opts for vodka over Scotch.

The Godfather Cocktail Recipe

I used to make The Godfather wrong. For years, I made it with Jack Daniels and topped it off with cola. How wrong I was.

At Christmas this year I decided to make myself a Godfather, but I only had Scotch to hand to mix with my Amaretto, so I used that, and didn’t top it with Coke like normal (I always knew the classic was without cola, but the norm in the UK at least is with the topping). It tasted fantastic. Even my partner Jo enjoyed it, the Amaretto was wonderful at masking the strength of the drink, just served on the rocks. I even went as far as to name it, the Glasgow Gangster (see what I did there?) just before looking online to see if there was already a name for a Scotch Godfather.

There was, and the name was The Godfather

I felt a little silly but it goes to show how easy it is to mis-learn a drink, so its always worth taking a look in the books and checking what you think you know!

Leave some comments about the Godfather

I first had this poured for me by the legendary Californian Cocktail waiter Salvatori Ali, whilst he was in the UK (winning UK cocktail waiter of the year!), and we've been together ever since (me & the drink, not Sal. ).

This is one of many very simple drinks that is simply excellent and relies on the strength of the two ingredients used. You can easily vary the ratio of Whiskey and Amaretto to suit your taste anywhere from 1:1 to 1:4 if you like the sweetness of the amaretto more. I actually make mine with Bourbon to compliment the sweetness of the amaretto. Tradtionally it is made with scotch. It can be serverd on the rocks or 'up'.

i thought my tastebuds were playing tricks with my mind the first time i had this, but after frequent trips to the bar for a top up it became clear (even if my mind was a wee bit hazey)this is one utterly amazing drink!oh and if you add coke it lasts longer. . .

absolutly darling divine and makes the heat rise that drink made me meet my one true love so thank you!
