Grapefruit is perfect for a bright warm-weather drink. The tequila-packed Grapefruit Agua Fresca is perfect out by the pool, while the Salty Dog, made with vodka or gin, will instantly transport you to a sunny Miami day. Grapefruit and Elderflower Cocktail
All you need are 3 ingredients and about 30 seconds to whip up this classic “Frenchie” cocktail with grapefruit, elderflower and gin. It’s so simple, yet so refreshing and delicious.
Welp, it’s about that time.
After selling all of our furniture, giving away most all of our books, packing up all my kitchen supplies, and majorly minimizing our wardrobes, we’ve reached the point where it’s time to tackle one final area of our little apartment here in Kansas City before moving to Spain:

Ok, well actually, we gave away the bar cart when we got rid of all of our furniture in June. So we’re really talkin’ about a collection of random bottles hanging out awkwardly on the floor of our dining room right now. 😂 And when I say a collection, I do mean a legit collection. Between combining two household bars when we got married, receiving a handful of awesome gins and tequilas and mezcals as wedding presents, and hosting a bunch of parties and happy hours here this summer (which somehow always leave leftover bottles behind), Barclay and I realized this month there are lots of cocktails here waiting to be made and shared.
So during our final month in KC, we’ve decided to host as many dinners, happy hours, and tastings here as possible to help spread the cocktail love amongst our friends. (<– Which, of course, is totally just an excuse to hang out with friends as much as humanly possible before we go.) In the past week, we’ve had two mezcal tastings and a wine night, which were all delightful. But one of my favorites so far was last Friday night when we had a few dozen people over for a new occasion — “gin night!”
I feel like gin is one of those alcohols that I really enjoy in cocktails, but rarely order when mezcal or whiskey is also available on a menu. And as such, we realized that we had a few nearly-full bottles of gin in our stash that needed to be used up. So we invited everyone over for a gin-only party, and I mixed up big batches of 5 different cocktails for everyone to sample — an earl grey tea cocktail, negronis, gin margaritas (margatinis), G & Ts, and the crowd favorite of the evening, this simple grapefruit elderflower cocktail.
It was actually the easiest of all to make, with just 3 quick ingredients. But everyone absolutely adored it, and many of you asked about it on Instagram, so I wanted to share it with you. (And P.S. — if you’re not into gin, it can also be made with vodka.) So grab a bottle, and let’s mix up a round!
Our little “gin party” cocktail bar. Since most of our furniture is now moved out of the house, we served it up on the plastic little folding tables I use to shoot food photos for the blog. You know, fancy. ;)
This cocktail was actually inspired by a recent happy hour visit to Bluestem in Kansas City, with my friend Kathryne. They had a drink called the “Bohemian” on the menu — featuring gin, elderflower and grapefruit — which sounded refreshing on a warm day. (Although when we googled it, turns out the combination is classically known as the “Frenchie” cocktail.) Whatever you call it, though, it totally hit the spot. And I, of course, immediately wanted to try recreating a version of my own at home.
So I did some fiddling around with the proportions, and ended up landing on just a simple 2:2:1 ratio of gin, grapefruit juice and St. Germain. And it was perfection. Also, when you use store-bought 100% grapefruit juice (I was too lazy to juice the actual fresh fruit), it literally only takes a few seconds to whip one up!
We invited our guests at the party to garnish theirs with a sprig of fresh rosemary, lavender, or sage (courtesy of my friend, Beth’s, garden). And I loved the extra subtle flavor that the fresh herbs gave to the drinks.
Seriously, so simple, and so good.
Whenever we get around to stocking our bar in Spain, these will most certainly be on the menu again soon. 💛
Grapefruit and Elderflower Cocktail
This grapefruit and elderflower cocktail is quick and easy to make with gin (or vodka).
Ingredients:
- 2 ounces gin
- 2 ounces grapefruit juice*
- 1 ounce St. Germain
- ice
- optional: fresh sprig of rosemary, tarragon, lavender or sage
Directions:
- Combine the gin, grapefruit juice and St. Germain in a cocktail shaker with a few cubes of ice, and shake for 10 seconds to combine.
- Strain into a cocktail glass filled with an extra ice cube or two, garnished with a fresh herb sprig if you’d like. Serve immediately.
*If you’re not into gin, this cocktail could also easily be made with vodka.

Yum! I’ve got a bottle of bright gin from Lifted Spirits in the Crossroads that is from their very first batch, and sadly it’s been sitting on my bar (mostly) unused for quite some time now. I’m with you about enjoying gin, but never ordering it whenever there are other options (tequila for me). This is definitely the recipe I didn’t even know I was looking for, can’t wait to try it!

Have you ever seen a cocktail grapefruit? No? Neither had we, until we saw this sign at Trader Joe's last week.
A cocktail grapefruit, as it turns out, is no grapefruit at all. It only looks like one. It's a little smaller than some grapefruit, though, as you can see from the photo above. (My hands are pretty small.)
The cocktail grapefruit is actually a blend of a mandarin and a pummelo (or pomelo). The pomelo side presumably gives it that yellow and green color and thick skin, while the mandarin side of its heritage makes it much sweeter than a grapefruit.
We split ours open to see what it looked like. It was bright yellow inside, with two or three large seeds in each segment. It was deliciously juicy; we dripped juice all over the kitchen just trying to peel the thing. The taste was very refreshing, too; it had the tart brightness of grapefruit but none of the sourness. It was sweet, bright, and very juicy.

The Big Texan Bourbon-and-Grapefruit Cocktail
Ingredients
- 2 tablespoons fresh grapefruit juice
- 1 1/2 ounces bourbon
- 1/2 tablespoon simple syrup (see Note)
- 2 basil leaves
- Ice
- 1 grapefruit slice and 1 preserved cherry, for garnish
How to Make It
In a cocktail shaker, combine the grapefruit juice, bourbon, simple syrup and basil. Fill a chilled rocks glass with ice. Add 5 ice cubes to the shaker and shake well. Strain the drink into the ice-filled rocks glass. Garnish with the grapefruit slice and cherry.
Make simple syrup by boiling equal parts sugar and water. Let cool before using.

Entry, Choice and Premium Size Citrus Trees for you to enjoy!
Our Citrus selections come in three sizes reflecting the approximant age of the tree. Each variety of Citrus grows at different rates and sizes will vary. Typically, a Premium tree will be the closest to fruit baring age while the Choice and Entry sizes will need a season or two of growth to become productive.
Entry Size Trees
“Entry Size trees” are from 12 to 18 months in age and 12” to 18” tall. Entry Size trees are best repotted into a 10” to 12” container within a month of delivery.
Choice Size Trees
“Choice Size Trees” are from 18 to 30 months in age and 18” to 24” tall. Choice Size Trees are best repotted into a 10” to 12” container within a month of delivery.
Premium Size Trees
“Premium Size Trees” are from 30 to 36 months old and the closest to baring age offered. The plants are a more developed size than the Entry or Choice sizes with more branching and a fuller look.
Premium Size Trees are shipped in 10 x 9.5, #3 containers.
Premium Size trees need to planted in a 12” to 14” container upon arrival. In climates where citrus is regularly grown trees may be planted directly into the ground.

Gin, Grapefruit, and Thyme Cocktail
Ingredients
- 1 tablespoon plus 2 teaspoons sugar
- chopped thyme
- grapefruit wedge
- thyme leaves
- 3 tablespoons gin
- ⅓ cup freshly squeezed grapefruit juice
- ice
- ¼ cup seltzer
- Grapefruit slice and thyme spring, for serving

How to Make It
Combine 1 tablespoon sugar with chopped thyme in a shallow bowl. Rub the rim of a glass with the grapefruit wedge, then dip in the sugar mixture to coat.
Muddle more thyme leaves and 2 teaspoons sugar with gin in the glass. Stir in freshly squeezed grapefruit juice. Fill with ice and top with seltzer.
Garnish with a grapefruit slice and thyme sprig.
Rosemary, Grapefruit & Gin Cocktail
I love savoury, herbal flavours in cocktails such as basil, rosemary and sage, so when I mixed this little concoction at home recently I just had to share it with y’all. The base spirit for this is gin, however if that’s just not your jam you can substitute with vodka instead.
There’s room here to have so much fun with this recipe: for a brunch-friendly cocktail (my favourite!) omit the gin and top with prosecco, or leave the booze out all together for a delicious mocktail.
To keep the rosemary flavour in the syrup really light and clean use young, fresh sprigs and be sure to also remove the leaves from the stalks (they add a heavy woodiness to the flavour that just doesn’t work).
- 1/2 cup caster sugar
- 1/2 cup water
- 2 sprigs rosemary, leaves stripped and stalks discarded
In a saucepan place water and sugar. Stir and bring to the boil. Turn down heat and allow to simmer for 3 minutes with lid on. Turn off heat and allow the mixture to steep for 5 more minutes before straining through a fine mesh strainer. Discard the rosemary leaves and allow the syrup to cool before transferring syrup to a sealed bottle or jar. The syrup will keep for a couple of weeks in an airtight jar, stored in a cool dark place.
Note: This syrup is also delicious mixed in a lemon and ginger margarita.
- 1.5 fl oz (45ml) London Dry gin (or vodka)
- 1/2 cup of freshly squeezed pink grapefruit juice
- 1 fl oz (30ml) rosemary syrup
- Ice
- Fresh rosemary sprig and pink grapefruit slice to garnish
Yields 1 cocktail.
In a shaker pour gin, grapefruit juice and rosemary syrup. Add a big scoop of ice and shake vigorously for 20 seconds, or until the shaker feels icy cold in your hands. Fill a tumbler with ice and pour cocktail from your shaker through a fine mesh strainer into your glass. Garnish with fresh rosemary and pink grapefruit slices.
