Leave some comments about the Black Russian
black russian is now a triple vodka in a pint of guiness
the ingredients are correct. 2 shots of vodka, 1 shot of kahlua or tia maria whatever, both are coffee liqueurs. put over ice and dash with. thats it. no secret.
This is my all time favourite drink & I think it taste the best with Tia Maria not Kohla! White Russian is alsoa favourite but because it is so easy to drink I tend to get very drunk on it :o) x
Ok Vodka, Tia Maria & Coke, They are the ingredients. And its not coffee its chocolate, because the drink is otherwise known as a Chocolate Orgasm.
by Kathryn Janeway
the ingredients here are wrong. it is vodka. tia maria, coke poured over ice and topped with a dash of guinness
Am i the only one who think this drink tastes like coffee?Great drink tho!
best drink ever ! if i remember rightly , the ingredients were . . . . . tia maria , pepsi , the head of guiness & vodka ?
Must have a dash of Lime try it you'll be convert.
The only drink to enjoy. . . . .
Great - only long island tea is better - coke diffuses the flavours without weakening it - so do it with a splash of coke!
u gotta have a head of guiness for the ultimate 'irish black russian'!!
only wimps have coke in it.
The original Black Russian in the 1970's used Tia Maria not Kahlua because Kahlua did not exist then.
Sorry, but a Black Russian is Vodka and Kahlua, PERIOD. Proportions vary - with a stronger tasting voda (a la Stoly), 1-to-1 tend to be about right, but lighter vodkas, 2/1 vodka/Kahlua is btter. FORGET THE COLA, this drink is already sweet enough.
by Joe in the US
over here in ireland we top it off with guinness, anybody else do this around the world?
The Big Debate: Traditional Black Russian is Kahlua and Vodka. If served in a pub, they add coke to make it go further. Tia Maria is NOT the same as Kahlua, the flavour is different - Kahlua is a stronger coffee flavour(see Notabikeranymore)Also, see White Russian
Tia maria is basically the brand name for kahlua. Like smirnoff is for vodka
Leave the Vodka and Kahlua and remove the splash of coke. . . . . . . . no good with coke
Should be tia maria!
Thought it was Tia Maria!
Gorgeous, tastes extra lovely with a Guiness top, as served in my local. *yum*
well what can i say but if u want to get smashed in a lovely sinking way this is the one for you!
This is one of my favorite drinks.

Black Russian is a great drink but COLA ahs NOTHING to do in it. Correct recipe is: 2/3 vodka, 1/3 Kahlua. Build into an ice-filled old-fashioned glass.
Nice with crushed ice too. in a long glass with plenty of coke
It's a drink with a lot of taste that should be enjoyed slow but steady

Introducing Coach Kahlúa
Kahlúa Original
the black russian how to make
Did you know The Word Kahlúa
is derived from “kahwa,” an Arabic slang word for coffee. The name was selected by the liqueur’s founder, Señor Blanco, who wanted to stay true to coffee’s Middle Eastern origins.

For how long can I let a bottle sit?
The bottle will stay mint for 4 years. After this, the coffee flavor won’t hit the high notes as in it’s prime – but it will stay safe and sound to enjoy for longer.
Long Black Russian Cocktail Recipe
THIS PAGE MAY CONTAIN AFFILIATE LINKS. PLEASE READ MY DISCLOSURE.
The Long Black Russian cocktail is a simple but delicious twist on the Black Russian. To the traditional Kahlua and vodka, you add several ounces of cola to stretch it out.
But of course the cola doesn’t just make the drink longer. It also adds bubbles and that unique flavor of cola. Imagine a cola with mocha flavoring added to it, and you’ve got an idea what this drink tastes like. This drink works best with whatever cola of choice you usually drink, including diet colas like Diet Coke or Coke Zero. The cola flavor comes through clearly, so make sure you use one you like.
This drink is great as a summertime alternative to the traditional Russians, because the cola makes it a little less heavy and more hydrating. It’s a good cocktail to have with dinner because, as I mentioned, it’s kind of like a mocha cola. It pairs well with burgers, steaks, anything beef, but also other strongly flavored meats like salmon or even lamb. Stick to savory recipes rather than sweet – for example, I wouldn’t wash down something teriyaki with this drink. But something parmesan encrusted? You betcha.
It’s also a great cocktail for a night out. It’s not so strong that you’ll be falling down when you try to dance, and the cola makes it very refreshing. The vodka and cola together cut through the sweetness of the Kahlua.
If you enjoy this drink, check out the Pirate’s Float, which mixes Captain Morgan’s Spiced Rum with root beer schnapps and cola. And also the Mozart Cola, which blends Mozart Chocolate Liqueur with ice cream and cola to make a rich, delicious float.

The Black Russian: The Smooth Taste of Vodka and Coffee

When it comes to simple and satisfying cocktails, few can beat the black Russian. This popular lowball is enjoyed worldwide and the combination of vodka with a coffee liqueur creates a pleasant and irresistible drink.
The black Russian is so well-known that it should be among the first cocktails that every aspiring bartender commits to memory. While you're at it, be sure to learn how to make the white Russian as well.
There is not much to the black Russian recipe and it's on of those incredibly easy drinks that anyone can mix up. You will simply pour your favorite vodka and coffee liqueur (typically Kahlua) over ice, stir, and serve. Despite its simplicity, there are a few things that you can do to enhance the black Russian.
What You'll Need
- 1 1/2 ounces vodka
- 3/4 ounce coffee liqueur
How to Make It
- Build the ingredients in an old-fashioned glass filled with ice.
- Stir well.
3 Ways to Improve Your Black Russian
The black Russian really is a great drink and that's why it's so popular. Just like many of our favorite cocktails, it can also be used as a foundation for new ideas. For instance, you can bring the vodka-coffee combination into the world of boozy ice pops to create a fun adults-only treat for summer.
But why stop there? Let's explore some ideas for improving your black Russian experience.
Pour to Your Personal Taste
No one says that you have to pour a black Russian in any exact proportions. In fact, you should be customizing it to your taste because you're the one drinking it. You can even switch it up depending on your mood.
The 2:1 ratio given in the recipe is a nice balance; the drink is neither too sweet nor too dry. If you want it a little sweeter one night, simply pour more liqueur. If, on the other hand, you would like a drier drink (perfect for dinner), then go with less liqueur and make up for it with vodka.
Experiment With the Liquors
Familiar cocktails like this are the perfect way to gauge a new distilled spirit because you can use your previous experiences for comparison. Take advantage of this and go beyond "the usual" to discover something you've not tried before.
For example, it's common to associate "coffee liqueur" with the brand name of Kahlua. It is a nice option and incredibly reliable because you can find a bottle almost anywhere liquor is sold. Yet, Kahlua is not the only coffee liqueur out there. If you spy a new coffee liqueur at the liquor store, give it the black Russian taste test and see how you like it compared to your old favorite.
Tip: Did you know it's easy to make your own coffee liqueur? It's a great experiment if you're inclined to a little DIY project.
The same can be said for vodka, which is a far more complex market with tons of options. There are some amazing vodkas being produced today.
Some fit the luxury category while others are friendlier on the wallet. There is no reason to continue drinking the same vodka you've poured for the last 10 years. Get out there and live a little! You might be surprised at what you find.
When you're ready to step away from vodka, switch the spirit out completely. With the exception of gin, almost any of the other base liquors pair perfectly with coffee liqueur. Start with a shot of tequila and enjoy a brave bull, then try brandy, rum, or whiskey.
Add a Hint of Flavor
Quite often, vodka drinkers shy away from using flavored vodkas in drinks with darker profiles. Sure, it's easy to add a fruity vodka to drinks like the madras or cosmopolitan, but when it comes to those of the black Russian variety, the choices seem limited.
This is not entirely true, you just have to be more selective and creative in the vodka you pour.
- Coffee Vodka - Play up the coffee flavor by pouring Three Olives Triple Shot Espresso. It adds a fantastic kick.
- Chocolate Vodka - Go for a slightly sweeter black Russian and pour the likes of Van Gogh Dutch Chocolate. It is as tempting and delicious as it sounds.
- Cake Vodka - If you love the new flavors of dessert vodkas and can't wait until the next one comes out, toss them into your black Russian. They're actually a great match.
- Two-Flavored Vodka - A few vodka brands specialize in combining two or more flavors and these are perfect for this drink. Try something like Stoli'sChocolat Kokonut or Chocolat Razberi.
Beyond these suggestions, think of flavors that you might enjoy adding to your morning coffee.
It's more than likely that there's a flavored vodka to match and, if not, you can always infuse it yourself.
How Strong Is the Black Russian?
Two-ingredient, liquor-only drinks are not weak and that is not their intention. Instead, mixed drinks like the black Russian should be thought of like a scotch on the rocks: a flavorful drink to be enjoyed slowly, sip by sip.
To prove this point, if we make the black Russian with an 80-proof vodka and 40-proof coffee liqueur using the recipe above, it would be about 27 percent ABV (54 proof). It's smoother than a straight shot of vodka, yet retains that full flavor of its ingredients.

Black Russian Cocktail
White Russian Cocktail
Favorite Restaurant Cocktail Beverage
From the reading I have done, a Black Russian and soon after, a White Russian cocktail recipe, first appeared around 1949.
Supposedly a Belgian bartender named Gustave Tops invented the beverage in honor of the U.S. ambassador then living in Luxemborg. He used Russian vodka in addition to Kahlua in his recipe.
He named the cocktail because it was the time of the Cold War with the Soviet Union, or so people think.
The name of the cocktail may also be simply because he was pouring Russian vodka. The beverage is traditionally poured over crushed ice in an old-fashioned glass.
The White Russian cocktail appeared soon after. It also is made with vodka and KahlГєa with the addition of cream.
Milk is often used as a substitute for the cream but in doing so, it does change the taste of a White Russian. The name of the drink is either because of the added cream or because the name of an anti-Bolshevik group during the Russian civil war was the "White Russians." No one knows for sure, but we do know the cocktail is not traditionally Russian.
Kahlua is a Mexican coffee-based liqueur and is one of my personal favorite liqueurs. It is delicious and is found in many cocktail recipes.

A Black Russian is an unlikely but thoroughly satisfying blend of vodka and Kahlúa coffee liqueur. This cocktail was created by the barman Gustave Tops, who worked at the Hotel Metropole in Brussels around 1950. He used to make this cocktail for the American ambassador Pearl Mesta, and he probably had no idea that the Black Russian would become a perennial favorite. It goes without saying that any cocktail with “Russian” in its name has vodka as a primary component.
If there is one drink that practically every bartender in the world knows, it is the Black Russian. Short of pouring equal shots of vodka and Kahlúa and drinking them, the Black Russian is one of the easiest drinks to mix at home.
White and Black Russians are among the few drinks that benefit from the ice melting in them, so serve either in a nice, hefty old-fashioned glass.
Instructions
- 1 Pour both ingredients over ice in a chilled old-fashioned glass.
White Russian: Add 1/2 ounce cream and shake with ice.
Chocolate Black Russian: Place the vodka, Kahlúa, and 2 scoops chocolate ice cream in a blender. Serve in a wine glass or champagne flute.
Smirnoff Black Russian
Mixing the purity of Smirnoff No. 21 Vodka, and the colour of dark coffee liqueur, this combination of just two ingredients delivers a drink with flavour and great looks.
