Blue Hawaiian classic cocktail recipe

THIS PAGE MAY CONTAIN AFFILIATE LINKS. PLEASE READ MY DISCLOSURE.

The Blue Hawaiian is akin to the Pina Colada, based on rum, pineapple juice and cream of coconut. It promises a little taste of tropical paradise. The big difference is the color: as the name suggests, it’s blue. Specifically, it’s the color of a sparkling pool on a clear, sunny afternoon.

But there is one other difference between the Blue Hawaiian and its tropical cousin: the flavor of orange. The blue Curaçao adds a distinct note of orange to this drink. It certainly doesn’t overwhelm the pineapple and coconut flavor. It just adds another wonderful sweet, tart layer to the taste of the drink.

This is a drink designed to make you feel like it’s summer no matter where you are or what the weather’s like. Not only does it taste like the tropics, it also looks like them. Cocktails are about visual appeal as well as taste. You can garnish this one with a simple cocktail umbrella, or you can spear a pineapple, a cherry, or both.

You can make this cocktail a blended drink, by mixing everything together with ice in a blender. Or you chill it and pour, or pour it over ice. The most common method is probably to shake it with ice and pour it into an empty glass. But on a hot day, you may welcome the addition of some ice – and this cocktail can take it. It’s got enough flavor not to just water down into nothing.

Blue Hawaiian Recipe

  • 1 ounce Blue Curacao
  • 1 ounce white rum
  • 3 ounces pineapple juice
  • 1 ounce sweetened coconut cream

There are a few options for how you mix this drink. You can shake everything with ice in a shaker, then strain it into the glass. Or you can leave the ice in when you pour it into the glass. You can also put the ingredients and the ice into a blender and make it a blended drink.

Don’t drink alcohol or making this for the kiddos? Try substituting blue gatorade for the blue curacao, and coconut extract for the coconut rum.

  • 1 Ounce Coconut Rum

  • 1 Cup Crushed Ice
  • Fresh Pineapple and Maraschino Cherries, If Desired For Garnish
  1. Combine first 4 ingredients in a blender. Blend until smooth.
  2. Pour in glass.
  3. Garnish with pineapple and maraschino cherries if desired.

Blue Hawaiian Cocktail: A Beautiful Tropical Rum Drink

  • 3 mins
  • Prep: 3 mins,
  • Cook: 0 mins
  • Yield: 1 Serving

The Blue Hawaiian is a fantastic and fun tiki drink. It's filled with rum, pineapple, and coconut and, best of all, it's blue!

There's something alluring about blue cocktails. They're exciting and exotic and they're almost always tropical, which is exactly why we love them. The Blue Hawaiian fits all of these descriptions perfectly.

In essence, this is a blue version of the popular Pina Colada. It simply splits up the coconut to allow room for the blue curacao, which is an orange-flavored liqueur that is responsible for the drink's color.

You have two options when it comes to mixing this tropical summer cocktail. Shake it or blend it up, either way, it's a very easy one to make.

What You'll Need

  • 1 1/2 ounces rum
  • 3/4 ounce blue curaçao
  • 3/4 ounce creme de coconut
  • 2 ounces pineapple juice
  • Garnish: maraschino cherry
  • Garnish: pineapple wedge

How to Make It

  1. Pour the ingredients into a mixing glass filled with ice cubes.
  2. Stir well.
  3. Strain into a collins glass filled with ice cubes.
  4. Garnish with the cherry and pineapple.

For the frozen version, simply pour the ingredients into a blender with 1 cup of cracked ice. This will be enough for two drinks, so be sure to share it with a friend.

How Strong is the Blue Hawaiian?

Let's assume that you pour an 80-proof rum for your Blue Hawaiian and follow the recipe exactly.

It will delight you to know that this boozy tiki drink is not so boozy. It's actually surprisingly light at right around 15% ABV (30 proof). If you toss it into the blender, you will have an even softer drink that's around 6% ABV (12 proof).

    Blue Hawaiian Cocktail

If a tropical vacation isn’t in your budget this year, consider making yourself a Blue Hawaiian Cocktail at home. With the flavors of coconut and pineapple, you can at least pretend you are on the beach.

There’s the Blue Hawaiian Cocktail and the Blue Hawaii Cocktail. The names are so similar, it can be confusing, but they are different drinks. The Blue Hawaiian has white rum and cream of coconut. The Blue Hawaii has rum, vodka and sweet and sour but no coconut.

The Blue Hawaiian Cocktail is similar to a pina colada. Except it contains blue curaçao which gives it the blue color. It’s also similar to the Cherry Colada Cooler.

It’s a good drink in the summertime because of the tropical flavors. It’s sweet and creamy and also very refreshing. It can be made either on the rocks or blended. I typically serve it on the rocks because that’s how I like my drinks. I’ve included directions for both versions of the drink. The only change to the ingredients is the amount of ice used. More for blended, less for on the rocks.

It’s usually served in a highball glass. Mason jars are also a fun way to enjoy the drink.

    Blue Hawaiian Cocktail

The Blue Hawaiian Cocktail. This is a favorite cocktail that I enjoyed while visiting the Delaware House and nearby Delaware Beaches. This Blue Hawaiian Cocktail serves as a delicious reminder of our time there. Its gorgeous color and white “foam” also reminds me of an exotic tropical sea.

The Blue Hawaiian Cocktail is a lovely shade of azure and hides a hot pink cherry at the bottom! (Photo Credit: Adroit Ideals)

Delaware House, as I named it, was my in-laws’ vacation home. My husband and I used to spend relaxing weekends at Delaware House when we had the time. Subsequently, for about a year and a half, we spent significant “unrelaxed” personal time renovating and updating the house for a recent sale. Additionally, I got to test my home staging skills as well as learning how to update an old 1970s style home. And, as part of our changes…I did paint the front door of Delaware House a lovely “Exotic Sea” color! And the Blue Hawaiian Cocktail certainly represents that gorgeous color!

The first time I tasted a Blue Hawaiian Cocktail was at a popular restaurant in Bethany Beach, Delaware called The Parkway. The Parkway is an upscale but casual restaurant located on Bethany’s “main drag.” Meat and seafood dishes crowd the menu and are best shared along with a beachy cocktail or glass of wine. And my favorite Blue Hawaiian Cocktail is always made specially by the bartender Michael! I haven’t exacted Michael’s version, but I’m happy with my recipe.

The original Blue Hawaiian Cocktail at The Parkway Restaurant in Bethany Beach, Delaware (Photo Credit: Adroit Ideals)

Traditionally, the Blue Hawaiian Cocktail is made with rum. I’m not a fan of rum, so I substitute vodka instead. The pretty blue color comes from blue Curacao liqueur.

Also, I like to use a coconut-flavored vodka. You could also use creme of coconut . Add some pineapple juice and shake with ice in a cocktail shaker. I don’t use sweet and sour mix but you could add some to yours for a more traditional recipe.

As a celebration of the sale of Delaware House, and an ode to the front door color, I invite you to experience the Blue Hawaiian Cocktail with the luxurious color of an exotic sea and even some bubbly sea foam on top!

Bubbly, foamy ocean waves and a beautiful tropical ocean blue are signatures of the Blue Hawaiian Cocktail (Photo Credit: Adroit Ideals)

Two other recipes came out of the Delaware House renovation and update activities. First, the Delaware House Ham and Cheese Sandwich. And, second, the Delaware House Breakfast Sandwich. These two sandwiches are great on their own. However, I would not necessarily serve them with the Blue Hawaiian Cocktail.

The Blue Hawaiian at The Parkway Restaurant (Photo Credit: Adroit Ideals)

From the kitchen of A Food Lover’s Delight….

    1 oz plain vodka

1/4 oz coconut-flavored vodka or creme of coconut syrup

    3/4 oz blue Curacao

    3 oz pineapple juice

    Fresh pineapple chunk

Place a cherry in the bottom of a martini glass. Shake all liquid ingredients with ice in a cocktail shaker. Pour the contents of the cocktail shaker into the martini glass and enjoy!

If serving in a hurricane-style cocktail glass, put the ice cubes in the cocktail glass. Shake the liquid ingredients in the cocktail shaker and pour over the ice. Garnish with a pineapple chunk and some cherries.

Variations: Use plain and coconut-flavored rums in place of the plain and coconut vodkas. Sweet and sour mix is a tangy addition. Add some additional pineapple juice and serve in a tall glass over ice. Garnish with half an orange slice just like the original at The Parkway Restaurant.

Get yourself some Tillen Farms Pink Blush cherries just like the ones I’m using:

    Tropical Frozen Blue Hawaiian Cocktail

    Tropical Frozen Blue Hawaiian Cocktail

A few years ago I found this cute little shot glass from Key West at a yard sale. On the side of the shot glass was the Blue Hawaiian cocktail recipe. I’ve been to Key West many times but since our vacations were always family vacations with the kids I never ventured into any of the Key West Bars.

Never having tasted a Blue Hawaiian in Key West I couldn’t wait to try this exotic Blue Hawaiian cocktail at home.

For anyone who has never tasted a Blue Hawaiian, it tastes like a tropical heaven. A Blue Hawaiian is made with White Rum, Blue Curacao, pineapple juice, coconut cream and ice.

All the flavors you would expect in a frozen tropical cocktail that you would sip on while sitting on the beach in Key West watching the sun sink into the ocean as a Jimmy Buffet song plays in the background.

So break out the blender and whip up one of these refreshing Frozen Blue Hawaiian cocktails as you sit by the pool this weekend. And if you don’t have a pool to sit by whip one up anyway while listening to some Jimmy Buffet and pretend you are on a beach down in Key West.

How to make a Blue Hawaiian Cocktail

    • 1 oz Bacardi White Rum
    • 1 oz Blue Curacao
    • 2 oz pineapple juice
    • 1 oz coconut cream
    • 1 cup crushed ice

    1. Combine all the ingredients in a blender and pulse to a creamy consistency.
    2. Garnish with a pineapple chunk and an umbrella.

Blue Summer Mocktail Virgin Drink Recipe

    Why Drink a Mocktail?

Mocktails are non-alcoholic drinks that look like the real thing, and are sometimes made the same as the real thing without the alcohol. Mocktails are not just for kids, either. People who can't or shouldn't drink due to pregnancy, illness or other circumstances can choose a mocktail and not feel isolated from the party.

For most cocktails, it is easy to make a mocktail by doing just that, but a few, like the Blue Hawaiian, are more difficult.

    Blue Hawaii Mocktail

The Blue Hawaiian cocktail is blue because of the blue curacao, an orange-flavored blue liqueur. It also contains pineapple juice and rum, and some recipes even include vodka and coconut creme. To make a refreshing blue summer mocktail that looks and tastes like a Blue Hawaiian, follow this recipe:

    Chill a hurricane glass

In a shaker filled with ice, combine:

    • 3 ounces pineapple juice
    • 1 ounce fresh squeezed orange juice (store bought is okay, but may ruin the final color.)
    • 2-3 drops of blue food coloring, not too much or your mocktail will be green!
    • *Optional: 1 ounce of Coco Lopez coconut creme

Shake well to incorporate ingredients and strain into the chilled hurricane glass filled with ice. Garnish with a slice of pineapple and a maraschino cherry.

    Blue Bubblegum Mocktail

The Blue Bubblegum Mocktail is a sweet drink that tastes just like bubblegum. There are two easy ways to make this drink:

In a tall glass filled with ice, combine:

    • Sparkling water
    • Bubble gum flavored snow cone syrup

Stir to until the ingredients are combined and top off with a maraschino cherry or two.

The second way to do this is with actual bubblegum soda. Jones Blue Bubblegum soda is a tasty pure cane soda, and may be a less sugary option than using snow cone syrup.

As with the previous recipe, pour the sode over ice into a tall glass and top off with a cherry or other colorful garnish.

    Blue Mocktail Cooler

There are several ways to make a blue mocktail cooler, here is an excellent recipe to start with:

In a pitcher, make a batch of Kool-Aid Berry Blue drink mix. Add ice until it covers the liquid, then top off with club soda. For a sweeter drink, use Sprite or Sierra Mist. Add some fresh blueberries and/or strawberries on top, and a few will end up in each glass.

For a blue mocktail cooler with a lower sugar content and a sour kick, try the following recipe:

    Into a pitcher pour:

    • The juice of 4-5 large lemons and/or limes
    • 2-3 cups of cold water
    • Blue food coloring to desired color. Do this one drop at a time and mix before adding more.
    • Top off with lemon-lime soda and mix the whole batch up with a long spoon.

Garnish with lemon slices and cherries, or any combination of fruit you like. Be sure to get some into each glass you pour.

With a few simple ingredients and a little imaginatio, you can make a blue mocktail for summer easily. Have these ingredients on hand to make a variety of blue summer mocktails:

    • Food coloring. There are several variations of food colors available, including neon hues. Experiment with different hues and measurements to get different shades of blue in your mocktails.
    • Club soda and lemon-lime soda. Both of these are great for jazzing up some blue juice or blue fruit punch and making coolers.
    • Blue Soda. If you have blue soda you have an instant mocktail that just needs a garnish. You can also add this to lemonade or limeade to make a refreshing lemonade/limeade cooler.
    • Blue KoolAid or Hawaiian Punch mix. An excellent base for any blue mocktail.
    • Blueberry or other dark berry juice. Although technically more purple than blue, cutting this juice with sprite or club soda can give you an energizing, healthy summer cooler.
    • Plenty of fresh fruit for garnishing!

If you throw a mocktail party for kids and/or adults, be sure to set out plenty of colorful garnishes including fruit, cocktail umbrellas and anything else you can think of for the occasion.

Guide guests, especially if they are kids, through making some of the drinks. Then let them loose and have fun!
