Bahama Mama, the Original Drink Recipe

THIS PAGE MAY CONTAIN AFFILIATE LINKS. PLEASE READ MY DISCLOSURE.

The Bahama Mama is an old classic that’s been tweaked over the years. Most bartenders and many recipe books have dumped the quarter ounce of coffee liqueur it calls for, and made other small changes. This is the original recipe, as far as I can tell.

It blends the flavors of pineapple juice, coconut and a touch of coffee with two types of rum. The flavor isn’t just your typical pineapple-coconut tropical punch; the coffee liqueur adds a rich, almost chocolate note that’s way off in the background. It makes the drink better but doesn’t call attention to itself.

This is such a good recipe that I don’t think it matters what brands you use for each ingredient. The pineapple juice is half the drink, so it makes everything else better anyway. I have not found, for example, that using a specific brand of dark rum changes the flavor much compared to using some other brand. Whatever you have on hand, whatever you like, will work.

A lot of new recipes toss in a dash or two of grenadine. In fact, that’s how I made it for the photos, which is why it all turned red. I think it’s good either way, but you definitely don’t need the grenadine. Try it without first.

Because this is a simple pour-and-stir kind of drink, it’s also easy to make by the pitcher in advance of a party. You can take it with you for tailgating or serve it at a backyard pool party.

where I’ll be napping for the next 7 days…beach side cabanas

I’d like to say that I made it to the Bahamas safe and sound after a crazy 18 hour travel itinerary, but I can’t say that I’m safe from pure gluttony from Club Med’s amazing resort. After a long and congested red eye flight to Florida, then followed by an 8 hour layover, I was hankering for sleep, protein and booze. When all three of these life’s necessities are deprived for eighteen hours, it can almost force a proud girl like to to start begging. But thank god Club Med came before I compromised on anything.

Wow, Wow and Wow! That’s pretty much all I have to say for now about their amazing Columbus Isle location in the Bahamas. The water is so blue, it looks like some either dumped a drums of blue dye in it or someone photoshopped and saturated the heck out of the water. Yes, it’s that blue and it’s that amazing.

After arriving in on Saturday at 1:30 pm, we were quickly whisked away to our rooms. With in a few minutes all the bloggers who came out, stripped from our travel weary clothes, into shorts, tanks and t-shirts. We were all ready and waiting for this wonderful moment of gathering and friendship, all live and real, rather than via the internet and twitter.

We all consumed some snacks and a round of drinks, then were escorted on a quick tour of the property. Then we immediately attended a fabulous little cocktail party with the blue azure beauty of the Bahamian sea as our backdrop. Crazy, it’s was all just crazy. Everything happened so quickly, I can’t believe all this occurred in our first half day on Saturday!!

appetizers to nibble with drinks: assortment sushi, rice rolls and fried scallops

I was most excited to find out that this Club Med location was serving a Bahama Mama cocktail! Last week, Todd bought a fabulous cocktail book, Dale Degroff’s The Essential Cocktail . We were hankering to make the Bahama Mama cocktail for my last post before my departure. Unfortunately, we didn’t have all the rums that were needed.

Thank you to the cocktail party, I still had my Bahama Mama Cocktail and it could not have been more perfect. I’m in the Bahamas, BABY!

Diane, how much fun are you having. Woohoo.

What a great looking time, you Bahama Mama, you! I’m lovin’ the photos and the updates. Looks like one heck of a party on the beach, too! Way to go… 😀

Enjoy every second!! Meanwhile, I’ll just have to mix myself up a Bahama Mama cocktail, and think fondly of you guys and your fun in the sun.

Make sure that you two enjoy yourselves down there and take plenty of pictures and video for your blog fans at home (including me) to see!

I’m drooling over the pictures. Have the best time!

Hey you two, long time no hear from! Yeah I moved my blog … but now I’m considerably concerned that once y’all are done down there, that there might not be any Club Med left for the rest of us. Make sure to leave some and don’t take it all!

Have a few of those for us – lord knows we could use them! Enjoy the sun & sand – it is beautiful down there. I love the sandy beaches more then out here … ahhhhh!

Well, I’m thrilled you’re having such a great time. It looks like you guys really put a dent in the alcohol supply down there! Have fun!

I am so jealous!

Oh my dear Diane, if I didn’t like you so much I would be secretly hating you right now!! Hahaha, the water looks amaaaaaazing and the food pictures are killing me! So glad you’re having a great time!

I’m good. Life isn’t to bad here on the homefront. The wisteria is starting to open. The peaches are in bloom and the jasmine is filling the air with it’s sweet fragrance. Plus I have the puppies to play with. Thanks for checking up on me! Todd. -WORC

Thanks for the update Diane! I’m going to channel the Bahamas through you cause I woke up to 6 inches of snow this morning!

Bahama Mama: A Fun Tropical Rum Cocktail

    • 3 mins
    • Prep: 3 mins,
    • Cook: 0 mins
    • Yield: 1 serving

One of the best tiki cocktails you can mix up, the Bahama Mama is a fruity rum drink that is perfect for any summer party. It's easy to make at home and one taste will instantly transport you to a faraway tropical beach.

The Bahama Mama is a very popular cocktail and, just like many tiki drinks, there are many recipes available. You should expect two types of rum, a little coconut and coffee, and a healthy dose of pineapple. While those are the keys to any good Bahama Mama, from there various ingredients are added.

For example, the first recipe is one of the more basic and common ways to make this drink. It has all the essential ingredients with an accent of lemon juice. The second recipe adds orange juice and grenadine, creating a slightly sweeter mix.

Both drinks are delicious, they simply show the range that you can find in the Bahama Mamas of the world. The Bahama Mama you order at your local tiki lounge may be entirely different than the one you had on your Caribbean vacation. Yet, with all variations, you should expect those same base ingredients and a wonderful fruity cocktail.

    What You'll Need

    • 1/4 ounce coffee liqueur
    • 1/2 ounce dark rum
    • 1/2 ounce coconut liqueur
    • 1/4 ounce 151-proof (high-proof) rum
    • 1/2 ounce fresh lemon juice
    • 4 ounces pineapple juice
    • Garnish: strawberry or cherry

    How to Make It

    1. Pour all of the ingredients into a cocktail shaker filled with ice.
    2. Shake well.
    3. Strain into a collins or hurricane glass filled with cracked ice.
    4. Garnish with a strawberry or cherry.

    A Coconut Rum Bahama Mama

Rather than use a coconut liqueur, you can use a coconut-flavored rum. While it can replace the liqueur in the first recipe, this version of the Bahama Mama also adds orange juice and grenadine to the mix.

The result is a slightly sweeter cocktail with a more complex blend of fruit flavors.

To make the drink, pour 1 ounce coconut rum, 1/2 ounce each dark rum, coffee liqueur, and grenadine, and 2 ounces each pineapple and orange juice into a cocktail shaker filled with ice. Shake well and strain into a hurricane glass filled with cracked ice. Garnish with an orange wedge and strawberries.

    Go Ahead, Blend It

While the Bahama Mama is typically served over cracked ice, it also makes a great frozen cocktail. To do so, simply add all of the ingredients to a blender with 1 cup of ice and blend until smooth.

You may find that this is not quite enough ice. If the drink is too thin, add a small amount of ice and blend again. Should you get it to a point where it becomes too thick, add a splash of one of the liquids and blend.

There is a chance that you'll have more than one frozen Bahama Mama by the time you shut down the blender. If this is the case, pour a drink for a friend or store the remainder in the freezer until it's time for a second round.

How Strong Is the Bahama Mama?

You have many options when it comes to the spirits you pour into the Bahama Mama, so it's hard to give a precise estimate of how strong the drink is. Yet, we can make a few assumptions and give you a good idea of how these two recipes stack up.

Let's assume you're using Malibu for the coconut liqueur, Brinley when a coconut rum is called for, and Kahlua for the coffee liqueur. Add in an 80-proof dark rum and make sure you have the 151-proof rum in the mix as well.

With all that, you can expect the first Bahama Mama to have an alcohol content somewhere around 11 percent ABV (22 proof). The second recipe has just a little less liquor at a lower proof, so it weighs in at just 8 percent ABV (16 proof).

While the Bahama Mama is a relatively light cocktail, it can be easy to have one too many. This is particularly true if you're enjoying a few rounds in the hot summer sun. Remember that heat and the sun can exacerbate your drunkenness, so drink plenty of water while partying.

    Best Cocktails in The Bahamas

The Bahamas has a bit of a fetish when it comes to naming tropical drinks after musical elements. Three of my top five cocktails in the Bahamas, including the Goombay Smash, tell this story. Goombay is a folk music form in the Bahamas, defined by its percussion: rich African rhythms that are beat from goatskin drums. A local cocktail called the Yellow Bird traces its origin to a song; and then there is the Bahama Mama—not the drink, the woman, and the queen of Junkanoo. The songstress Maureen Duvalier with her theatrical energy and storytelling musical style was one of the first modern Bahamian feminists. Born in 1926, she grew up to defy the staid image of women as housewives and church ladies by performing at night clubs, and being the first woman to dance on Bay Street in the annual masquerade. A psychoanalyst would probably enjoy dissecting the meaning behind the Bahamas' tradition of rumtastic musical tributes, but all you need to do is take pleasure in the history, sip up and enjoy these top five cocktails.

The Bahamas’ most popular any-occasion cocktail is Sky Juice, also known as Gully Wash: a combination of gin, coconut water and sweet condensed milk. This local favorite comes in degrees of sweet and extremely sweet, and with coconut chunks (the equivalent of pulp) or without. True Gully Wash always comes fully loaded with gin. Be careful with this Bahamian concoction: it is a creeper.

    Bahama Mama

Tucked away in my suitcase when I came of drinking age and headed across continents to attend university was a bottle of Nassau Royale, a vanilla-infused liqueur with a sweet blend of secret ingredients. This is one of the four must-have alcoholic infusions used in the fruity rum punch known as the Bahama Mama.

    Goombay Smash

Many people think they know the Goombay Smash, but the recipes that abound are only imitations of the original, which is still made from a secret family recipe at the Little Blue Bee Bar in Abaco, Bahamas. The tradition of the cocktail's creator, Emily Cooper, continues today with her daughter Miss Violet, who still runs the rustic watering hole. She says the secret is all in the family shake, something her mother put her entire body into: the strong tropical punch is finished inside a one gallon plastic bottle where it is shaken to produce natural foam.

    Yellow Bird

From its melancholy beginnings as a lovers’ requiem, the Yellow Bird travelled a long and winding path to become a renowned Bahamian cocktail. It started as a beautiful 1883 Haitian Creole poem about a woman named Choucoune, only to be turned into a song with the same name in the early '50s. Shortly after, an English songwriter took the catchy calypso rhythm, paired it with new lyrics and created the now ubiquitous version of “Yellow Bird.” Today, the refreshing drink, named for the well-known song, blends citrus fruits with a mixture of rums.

    Pineapple Upside-Down Martini

I make no assertions about the origin of this fun and flavorful cocktail, but I do lay claim to it for the Bahamas—it sips as smooth as vanilla icing on a rum-soaked pound cake, and at the same time pays tribute to the country’s famous start in the pineapple trade (we supplied Dole their first crop of pineapples). A dash of grenadine sinks to form the bottom layer for this liquid "cake," while a frothy mix of pineapple juice and vanilla vodka creates the yellow-tinted top.
