About this recipe

You can tell the Old Fashioned is a turbo-charged classic because it has a glass named after it. It’s one of the few cocktails, like the Martini and the Collins, to be so celebrated.

The Manhattan is another with the dark spirit look that fits the season, but it’s even more suited to parties than the Old Fashioned because essentially the Manhattan is a dark Martini. Like this classic drink, the Manhattan is a late 19th century combination of spirit and vermouth, and, like the Martini it’s served in an elegant v-shaped glass. The aromatics from the fortified wine escape into the nostrils as you drink, stem in hand. Most likely invented in the 1870s by a bartender on Broadway, it’s the number one New York cocktail – apart from, that is, the Cosmopolitan.

Orient Express Cocktail Bar Ratings and Reviews

Overall Rating

ambience
Noise

Cocktails were interesting but the service was terrible

Great atmosphere and terrific drinks. Grateful that reservations are taken as it is a small space and things are a little cramped and pushy around the bar. The only drawback was that at one point they turned the music up really loud, seemingly trying to silence conversation and drive people out. That was not the most pleasant end to an otherwise very nice evening.

Nice vibe and mostly cocktail bar. Food limited but good. Quite loud in the evening and later

I arrived on time and find a sign on door that says closed for private party. They informed me there was a mistake. Unacceptable.

We had a reservation for 5 people but it seemed like there wasn't really room for 5 people when we showed up - 3 people were cramped on one side of the table because there were no seats. Also, service was kind of slow because there wasn't too much staff. The bartenders were taking the orders, making the drinks and then dropping it off at the table. It was still a fun place (good music) but its better for smaller groups.

This quaint train-like bar was amazing. The music was great and the drinks were delicious and very time appropriate. We went to celebrate a birthday and the whole time we were sitting there with big grins on our faces because it was a fantastic vibe.

Best cocktail bar in the west village!

This was a cute restaurant two years ago. Set up like the Orient Express train from movie days it shares a kitchen with the restaurant next door. At this point it offers only a small (stained) menu of very common appetizers and very small drinks served in old-fashioned cocktail glasses. The charcuterie plate offered 2 pates, 3 meats and pita bread slices. No pickles or other garnish AND none available to bring from the kitchen. They were out of Bombay Sapphire Gin, didn't carry Rose's Lime or cranberry juice. so lower quality gin for martini, and no gimlets or cosmos could be made. Music was rock and roll instead of period sounds you would expect. No wonder it was empty on Saturday night at 7:00.

Amazing vintage style cocktails served in a train car. It's small and fills up quick.

We love Turks and Frogs and thought we'd try Orient Express as the two spots have the same owner. Unfortunately the service experience is worlds apart. We went to Orient Express last weekend for drinks and appetizers and were one of three occupied tables during our time there. The wine was fair and the appetizers were good but the service was the poorest we've experienced since moving to NYC. The wait staff congregated by the bar socializing and getting their attention was beyond difficult. When we finally did get someone's attention it was clear that we were frustrated. The waitresses response was to exude venomous attitude for the remainder of the dinner which made the experience unpleasant to say the least. Off the list.

My boyfriend and I always love it here. The cocktails are perfect and the charcuterie and cheese platters are superb. Very sweet and romantic.

Went for drinks only - they were not cheap but they were good. Bartenders were busy but friendly and helpful

The Orient Express was nothing like depicted on the website. It was dark and unwelcoming. The lighting was so poor that no one could read the menu. The welcome was non existent and we left within two minutes of arriving.

The service was horrendous. I had an opentable reservation, and when I arrived and told the bartender, he just pointed to the back so I took a seat. We had to wait at least 15-20 minutes before I grabbed someone who was walking by to let them know we didn't have a waiter or menus. This level of being ignored lasted until a new waiter came on for his shift. Definitely not going back, unless I am sitting at the bar.

When I pay over $100 for a few cocktails and a plate of hummus, I expect a little more service.

We got there early, when there were only a few other people. The ambiance was great. We could appreciate all the detail that went into the place and have a nice conversation. Further into the night, it got very loud and packed; there were people standing right next to our table waiting to get a seat. Overall a good experience, but I would suggest going early if you don't want the typical bar scene.

We came for pre-dinner cocktails, which were quite delicious and unusual. Food was just average, but we only had some hummus as a nosh to tame the alcohol. Great old-school cocktails.

Casual atmosphere. We had a lot of fun.

Denver's artisan & specialty cocktail bar

Welcome to the Union Lodge No. 1, a Denver specialty cocktail bar that stands as a tribute to the true American bars of late 19th century, and celebrates the art of crafting specialty cocktails. Step through our doors to enjoy a libation of the highest caliber, and be transported to a time before prohibition, where the creativity of barmen flourished. Our expert bartenders apply their passion and years of experience toward creating specialty cocktails, reminiscent of the masterpieces of the pre-prohibition era.

We are proud to bring the specialty cocktail movement back to its origin, and celebrate the rich history of crafting superior drinks.

    A Tribute To Our Roots

Before prohibition hit America, barmen were busy crafting artisan cocktails with high quality ingredients, paving the path for the specialty cocktails we all enjoy today. However, prohibition put an unfortunate pause in the progression of the craft, forcing the best and brightest barmen abroad to pursue their passion overseas, and effectively halting craft beverage creation here in America.

Union Lodge No. 1 pays homage to these history-making barmen by emulating their craft in an attempt to bring our Denver specialty cocktail bar back to the golden age of craft drink creation. While cocktail bars are still recovering from the effects of the prohibition era, we are proud to hold ourselves to the highest standards as we forge ahead towards the future.

We understand that it is only through an immense respect for the history of our craft, and thoughtful dedication to the methods pioneered by those late 19th century barmen, that we can begin to reclaim what was lost.

    Why We Stand Out

It's not just the appreciation for the history of specialty cocktails, or the passion and experience of our bartenders that sets our artisan cocktail bar apart. We pride ourselves on thoughtfully and carefully crafting libations with only the highest caliber spirits and quality ingredients for an unforgettable cocktail.

Our bartenders take turn-of-the-century cocktails and elevate them for modern palates, truly uniting the best of both worlds, and honoring this near-time-lost tradition in the best way we know how.

Stop by, enjoy a thoughtfully crafted beverage, and see how our dedication to preserving this art launches us far beyond what you would expect from an ordinary Denver specialty cocktail bar.

Local hero Ted Kilgore mans the bar at this newly relocated small-plates spot, where Adam Altnether offers house-made pickles, deviled eggs and Carrot Bruschetta.

Arnaud's French 75 Bar, New Orleans

Chris Hannah mans the bar at this dapper, cigar-friendly spot inside Arnaud’s, one of New Orleans’s oldest and most venerated restaurants.

    The Baldwin Bar , Boston

Ran Duan serves singular cocktails at his bar in the Sichuan Garden II restaurant inside the 17th-century Baldwin Mansion. Upstairs at the mansion is a new library-style lounge where Duan mixes stiff drinks like Rock Beats Scissors, with rye, Cynar, China-China liqueur and clove bitters.

    Goto , New York City

At his tiny, refined izakaya, Kenta Goto (p. 219) gives cocktails a Japanese spin, such as the elegant Sakura Martini, garnished with a cherry blossom. The complex drinks are excellent with the bar’s thoughtful small plates, among them pan-sized okonomiyaki (savory pancakes).

    Minero , Charleston

The decidedly Mexican-inspired cocktail menu has the requisite margarita and sangria, but also less expected creations like El Espectro: rum, chile, pineapple and lemon oleo-saccharum. All drinks pair well with the restaurant’s stellar tacos.

    Constantine , Minneapolis

Stained glass and 160 candles give this subterranean bar a dramatic look, and its cocktails embrace the theatrical, too. Barman Jesse Held (p. 220) focuses on novelty in his drinks, experimenting with infusions and even creating an “ice program” with different styles and flavors.

    The Roosevelt Room, Austin

The drinks at this sleek yet relaxed lounge are impressive, with a touch of whimsy. Do You Even Lift?, reminiscent of a root beer float, is a complex, nostalgic mix of rum, coffee liqueur, orgeat, cream, root beer, cayenne and cinnamon.

    Julep, Houston

Celebrating the cocktail culture of the South, mixologist Alba Huerta specializes in classics as well as thoughtful riffs, such as the namesake mint julep and a gin-based Oregano Cobbler with sherry gum syrup. The food menu includes oysters, smoked fish deviled eggs and an opulent seafood tower.

    Wright & Co., Detroit

The centerpiece of this restaurant, built in a ballroom–turned–jewelry shop, is the endless white marble bar top. Craft cocktails include the tequila-based Pear Trap, with pear brandy, salted pear syrup and Zucca amaro.

    Le Sel , Nashville

The downstairs lounge of this sophisticated restaurant serves drinks that are as refined as the New French menu. Cocktails lean toward French spirits, like the green Chartreuse–based Mad Priest and Le Sazerac, made with Cognac as well as the traditional rye whiskey.

    Victoria Bar , Portland

There’s a healthy dose of kitsch on the menu at this polished cocktail joint. Princess Bride—themed cocktails include The Six Fingered Man (a mix of rum, orange curaçao, orgeat, IPA, lemon) and Inigo Montoya (tequila, cardamaro, ginger, lime, cardamom bitters).

    Bar Sardine, New York City

This compact neighborhood bar in the West Village serves inspired drinks by Brian Bartels. These include a playful selection of Bloody Mary riffs (featuring ingredients like ramen broth, dill-infused vodka and shishito) and barrel-aged cocktails.

    Nitecap , New York City

At this dark, moody cocktail lounge downstairs from Schapiro’s restaurant, co-owner Natasha David serves a variety of drinks with cheeky style, from refreshing spritzes to boozy punches.
