Hemingway Daiquiri Cocktail Recipe

  • 3 mins
  • Prep: 3 mins,
  • Cook: 0 mins
  • Yield: 1 serving

The Hemingway Daiquiri is also known as the Papa Doble or Hemingway Special and it is a popular classic cocktail. As one may expect, it was named after the famous writer of the 1920's and 30's, Ernest Hemingway.

It is widely known that Hemingway enjoyed a drink or two. Biographical books like A Moveable Feast include countless tales of sharing drinks with literary friends while in Paris and much of his free time throughout his life was spent in bars. He was quite selective about what he imbibed and certainly had his preferences.

After spending some time in Cuba, Hemingway quickly became enamored with the Daiquiri. In 1921 Constantino Ribailagua, of El Floridita in Havana, created this variation in honor of his daiquiri-loving regular. At the bar, it was often served frozen. It's an easy variation to make -- just add 3/4 to 1 cup of ice to a blender.

As far as the drink goes, you will enjoy this amplified daiquiri because it brings the sweetness of maraschino along with tart grapefruit into the classic rum-lime mix. It's quite a delight and a nice drink to break routine.

For Hemingway himself, the Hemingway Daiquiri was served without sugar and is almost always prepared that way despite the fact that most people prefer the added sweetness.

Paprika: The Recipe Organizer App I've Been Looking For

Overall Impression: A simple-to-use, attractive and intuitive app for storing recipes you find both online and off.

Last year I talked about wanting to organize all my bookmarked recipes, which over the years had gotten scattered across a number of different systems (Google Reader, Evernote, Delicious), none of which really worked for me anymore. I decided to give Paprika a try and was happy to discover it has all the features I've been looking for in a recipe app, along with a few I didn't even know I wanted, but am glad to have.

The Review

Characteristics and specs: Paprika is a recipe management app that allows you to capture online recipes and sync them automatically between various devices. To add a recipe you found online, you navigate to the website within the app's browser and locate the recipe you want to add, or use their bookmarklet to save recipes while browsing online. On websites for most major food magazines, as well as recipe-focused sites like Epicurious, recipes are captured with the click of a button, but even entering recipes from blogs or non-compatible websites takes less than a minute of highlighting and clicking. It's also possible to enter your own personal recipes, so that everything is stored in one place. The app also makes it easy to generate grocery lists or meal plans based on the recipes you have saved.

Favorite details: One-click recipe capturing! I really appreciate the intuitiveness of the app; captured recipes are almost always formatted perfectly and items on the grocery store list are already organized into the correct aisles ("Produce," "Canned and Jar Goods," etc.), so I don't have to waste a lot of time correcting the technology's incorrect assumptions. (I wish I could say the same for my iPhone's Auto Correct!)

Splurge-worthy? At $19.99 for the Mac app and $4.99 for the iPhone, iPad, and Android apps, Paprika is more expensive than the usual under-$2 app, but the features and ease of use make it worth the extra money.

Recipe organization is a very personal thing. I always wanted to love using Evernote to store recipes because I know so many smart cooks who swear by it, but I'm a stickler for formatting; I want a standard, easy-to-follow format for all my recipes if I'm going to bother organizing them in one place. And don't get me started on all the unattractive, difficult-to-read recipe organizing apps out there. If I'm going to spend hours staring at an app on the computer, in the grocery store, and while cooking, I want it to be nice to look at and a pleasure to use.

Paprika is both. I've been using it for a couple months now and I've not only made progress on adding all the recipes I've had scattered around the web, I've also been more systematic about immediately searching for and adding recipes that catch my eye in magazines, newspapers, or blogs.

Quite simply, Paprika provides everything I've been looking for in a recipe organizing app: simple yet intuitive recipe capturing, Cloud syncing across multiple devices, easy-to-read formatting, and good-looking design. If these features are in line with what you're looking for too, Paprika is definitely worth a try.

Our 10 Favorite Prohibition Cocktails

Drink like it’s 1920 with Sidecars and the Tuxedo

In 1919, the 18 th Amendment was passed, clearing the way for 13 years of the folly that was Prohibition. The Noble Experiment lasted from 1920 to 1933. During this time, it was illegal to sell alcohol, so people completely stopped drinking. Yeah, right. They actually drank more than ever, even though the cocktails weren’t exactly top notch.

Barkeeps had limited access to good booze, so they used sweeteners and juices to cover up the taste of the rough hooch. A few cocktails from the era survived, having been lovingly restored in the best mixology joints around the country. Here are 10 of our favorites to sip on whle channelling your inner Nucky Thompson from HBO’s Boardwalk Empire.

  1. French 75: How can you go wrong with Champagne? The original recipe, from The Savoy Cocktail Book, published in 1930, calls for gin, lemon juice, simple syrup and some bubbles. A later recipe replaces the gin with Cognac.
  1. Southside: “It’s known as a Prohibition gem,” says Meaghan Dorman of Raines Law Room — a New York speakeasy named for a precursor to Prohibition, the Raines Law, which limited drinking on Sundays. “I’ve read that it was the drink of Al Capone and his gang.” The drink is typically made with gin, lime, mint and simple syrup.
  1. Sidecar: This one’s a stiff one, made of Cognac, Cointreau and lemon juice, in a 3-2-1 ratio that’s shaken and served up. It’s said to be named for an army captain who liked to be driven to the bar in a motorcycle sidecar. So old-timey.
  1. Dubonnet Cocktail: Dubonnet — which is essentially foritifed red wine made spicy with herbs — was used to mask the taste of rotgut gin in this drink, according to Maxwell Britten of Maison Premiere in Brooklyn. But making it with a quality gin, he points out, results in a suave sipper.
  1. Mary Pickford: Britten also recommends this fun little concoction of white rum, fresh pineapple juice, maraschino liqueur and grenadine, created by Eddie Woelke — who like many a bartender during Prohibition fled to Havana, where he was free to shake and stir to his heart’s content.
  1. Tuxedo #2: Created in the late 1800s, this drink resurfaced during the 1920s. Do the main ingredients — gin and vermouth — sound familiar? It’s a cousin of the Martini. Add a dash of maraschino liqueur, bitters and dose of absinthe, and you have yourself a Tuxedo #2.
  1. Ward 8: Also created before Prohibition, it’s easy to see why this one was popular during the Noble Experiment. Rye whiskey, which would have been harsh stuff at the time, is masked with lemon juice, orange juice and grenadine. Nowadays, better quality rye — like Templeton made in Iowa — has much improved this drink.
  1. Bee’s Knees: A spoonful of honey, plus lemon and orange juice, would have taken the edge off bathtub gin in this 1920s cocktail. Today’s craft gins lend a much-welcome complexity to this sweet-tart recipe.
  1. Bacardi Cocktail: In his 2008 book, The Essential Cocktail: The Art of Mixing Perfect Drinks, Dale DeGroff writes that the Bacardi Cocktail was the Cosmo of the post-Prohibition era. It was created earlier, though, and wildly popular in Havana, where Americans who could afford to would escape the booze ban.
  1. Highball: A simple brown spirit-and-ginger ale highball was a common order during the era, says Dorman. She recommends mixing your favorite bourbon with one of the craft ginger beers on the market now, like Fever Tree, and adding a twist of lime for a pleasantly spiced refreshment.
