Grasshopper Cocktail recipe

THIS PAGE MAY CONTAIN AFFILIATE LINKS. PLEASE READ MY DISCLOSURE.

The Grasshopper cocktail is an old classic that’s very simple. It tastes like a chocolate mint milkshake, and has fallen out of favor for that reason. And yet, look at all those candy ‘tinis people just can’t get enough of. At least this drink has the good breeding to hail from the French Quarter of New Orleans.

This drink doesn’t have much of a kick. It really tastes like chocolate mint candy converted into a liquid form with only a slight kick, and I think it’s due a revival. It’s definitely not up everyone’s alley, but if you like Thin Mints or peppermint patties, this drink is worth a try.

Maybe its simplicity is what’s caused it to lose popularity. Maybe it didn’t have any purple basil or ghost peppers, so it’s just not what hipster drinkers are looking for. But we’re not all hipsters. Some of us want drinks that taste good, even if they were around when your granddad was a young man.

What makes this drink somewhat unique is that it has a creamy component you don’t find in every creme de menthe cocktail. That gives it a different texture, and makes both the chocolate and mint more mellow in flavor. There are no sharp edges to this drink. It’s smooth, infinitely drinkable, fairly weak and not at all pretentious.

And now we have to talk about dairy equivalencies from region to region. This recipe calls for “light cream”, which isn’t sold everywhere, or at least not under that name. The simplest substitute is half and half, and you can buy it in the form of tubs of Land o’ Lakes Mini Moos from Amazon. I like to keep those on hand at the bar because they don’t need to be refrigerated, but they are real half and half.

In the US, you could also use “light whipping cream”. If you’re in the UK, “single cream” is the best call.

Grasshopper

I know that when most people think of a Valentine’s Day “romantic” cocktail, they immediately think of something red. That’s cool, you can all have fun with that. However, I have a question: which M&M is the sexy, sultry one? Green! Red is nice and all, open a bottle of cabernet and enjoy yourself. If you want a truly romantic cocktail, however, you’re going to need something green. Another winning ingredient for romance? Chocolate. Oh yes. Allow me to introduce you to the best Grasshopper you’ve ever had.

“Wait, a grasshopper?” You bet. It’s better than you remember — or, dare I say, better than you’ve imagined.

For a standard Grasshopper, you’re looking at an easy enough ratio of one-to-one-to-one white crème de cacao, crème de menthe and dairy (heavy cream, we’re not fooling around here). That recipe works and works perfectly well. However, to my taste, it’s a bit overly sweet.

Never fear, this recipe fixes that!

What I want you to do is reach for your cognac. You heard me, your cognac. Don’t go cheap on me here — if you’re making this as a romantic treat for your loved one (or ones, I’m open minded), you don’t want them thinking you’re cheap either.

The cognac will help balance out the sweetness of both the crème de cacao and menthe, while tamping down the overly minty-ness of the crème de menthe. You’re not looking for a Christmas cocktail here (that’s why we have Classic Eggnog). You want to balance the three stars together with the cognac.

Oh, and on the dairy input — seriously, heavy cream. Don’t play around with anything less. You’re celebrating. Unless you’re alone. Then do you know what you’re doing? Celebrating the awesomeness of chocolate plus mint!

Fun fact? Neither Alice nor I particularly enjoy Valentine’s Day itself, so we’re going to join all of you out there enjoying the Grasshopper because it’s an awesome chocolate, mint and (importantly) green drink!

Now, let’s get to some Grasshopper action.

Grasshopper Cocktail: A Creamy Green Martini You Can't Resist

  • 3 mins
  • Prep: 3 mins,
  • Cook: 0 mins
  • Yield: 1 serving

Skip dessert and go straight for the Grasshopper! This is a delicious green martini that is light on the alcohol and heavy on the sweet flavor. It is a pure chocolate-mint delight.

One of the great aspects about the Grasshopper is that you can experiment with the ratio to suit your personal taste. If you feel like a little more chocolate, add more crème de cacao. Is mint on your mind tonight? Simply ramp up the crème de menthe.

This is a brilliant and easy dessert cocktail and if you would like to enjoy a similar drink served over ice, give the Peppermint Patty a try.

  • 3/4 ounce white cr è me de cacao
  • 3/4 ounce green cr è me de menthe

More Tips for Making a Great Grasshopper Cocktail

The Signature Grasshopper Green. The suggestion of white and green liqueurs creates a pale green cocktail. However, if you use either the brown (cacao) and white (menthe) options of either liqueur, you will have a drink that is pale brown.

Remember that neither liqueur is 'creamy' and that the cream of the Grasshopper comes from the actual dairy cream.

'Crème' liqueurs simply designate that they are higher in sugar than other liqueurs.

Add Flavored Vodka. Add a fresh twist to this popular cocktail by bringing a flavored vodka into the mix. There are many great options to choose from and you might begin with one of the espresso vodkas or any of the whipped cream and other dessert vodkas. Chocolate vodka would be another way to increase the cocoa.

If you opt for this upgrade, begin with an equal amount (3/4 ounce) to the other ingredients. The goal is to accent the cocktail, not overpower it.

To Rim or Not to Rim. The last thing that you may want to consider is rimming the glass. Plain sugar would be a quick option, though you could also mix in a dusting of cocoa powder or even finely crushed graham crackers.

For a more refined chocolate experience, try grating a solid chocolate like Taza and using that on the rim. This is a great brand that has a fun variety of flavors to play with, all of which would make a nice addition to the Grasshopper.

How Strong is the Grasshopper Cocktail?

The Grasshopper is one of our favorite low-proof cocktails. It is light on the alcohol, delicious, and very easy to make, so it's a perfect casual drink that will not leave you feeling tipsy. If we choose 20% ABV liqueurs, it weighs in with an alcohol content of just around 13% ABV (26 proof). This is equivalent to the average glass of wine.

If You Like the Grasshopper, Try These.

We have already looked at ways to enhance the classic Grasshopper recipe and it is the perfect foundation for experimentation.

It is such a popular cocktail that it has inspired a number of other mint-chocolate drinks that you'll also want to consider.

  • The Grasshopper Shooter - Everything you love about the original Grasshopper in a tasty little party shot.
  • Holiday Hopper - A surprising twist is brought into this easy variation and we won't give it away. Let's just say that this recipe requires one of our favorite fruit liqueurs. You definitely have to try it.
  • Mint ChocoChata Martini - Fancy, creamy, and filled with chocolate and mint. This is a fun recipe that approaches the flavor and creaminess of the Grasshopper in an entirely different way.

    The Grasshopper Cocktail

When it comes to cocktails, women generally prefer colorful mixed drinks with sweet and fruity flavors; such is the Grasshopper cocktail, a fresh and minty after dinner cocktail. Perfect all year-round but especially in the summer, this cocktail is great for outdoor parties, where you can enjoy its freshness and striking color in the sunlight. It name was inspired, obviously, by the color, which resembles that of a grasshopper, and which is given by one of its main ingredients, the creme de menthe.

    Grasshopper Cocktail picture

We don’t know too much about its origins or who invented it first, but most stories claim it was invented at the Tujague Bar, a very famous location in New Orleans, Louisiana, somewhere in the middle of the French Quarter. The South is known for its cool and refreshing beverages and libations prepared with ice and mint, which are ideal for the high temperatures and the warm summer climate. The Mint Julep is an example, only it is a traditional beverage there. As for the Grasshopper cocktail, it too gained popularity, especially during the 1950s and 1960s not only in New Orleans, but everywhere in the American South.

Because its ingredients can be easily found in bars across the world, you can probably serve it anywhere you like. And if the bartender there doesn’t know how to prepare it, then you can teach them, using the following official IBA recipe:

    • 30 ml creme de Menthe
    • 30 ml creme de Cacao
    • 30 ml fresh cream

The preparation is very simple, and anyone can do it: the creme the menthe, the creme de cacao and the fresh cream are poured into a shaker which has been previously filled with ice. The mixture is well shaken, and then strained into a chilled cocktail glass. However, the drink may be served in other types of glasses as well, such as a Collins or an old fashioned. While the garnish is not mandatory, one may add a few leaves of fresh mint, or coat the edges of the glass with powdered cocoa.

There are also several variations of the Grasshopper cocktail, such as the Flying Grasshopper – also called Vodka Grasshopper -, where the fresh cream is replaced with vodka. Because the original recipe is not very potent in alcohol, some may prefer to add tougher spirits, which is why variations like this appeared. One can also order a Brown Grasshopper, which contains the additional coffee – not in the rough form, but prepared. This particular recipe may also work with the cocoa garnish, or even with coffee on the rims instead.

Because it is so versatile, some prefer to look at this cocktail like a dessert, which is how the Frozen Grasshopper appeared; this libation contains mint ice cream next to the other ingredients, so it becomes more dessert than cocktail. Other variations include the Green Genie which is made from creme de caramel, creme de menthe and vodka infused with jasmine. In states like Wisconsin, they consume lots of mixed drinks where they replace the cream with ice creams; their version of the Grasshopper contains ingredients like creme de menthe, milk and mint chocolate chip ice cream.
