Tanqueray® London Dry Gin
Tanqueray® London Dry Gin
Launched in 1830, Tanqueray London Dry Gin is double-distilled with distinct citrus botanicals, particularly grapefruit, to the fore.
How to make
Using a jigger, measure 50ml Tanqueray London Dry Gin, 25ml crème de cacao liqueur and 17.5ml double cream into the shaker.
Shake the mixture vigorously until the surface of the cocktail shaker feels chilled.
Using a cocktail strainer, strain the mixture into a martini glass.
Water, Water
Don’t snub good old H20. Stay refreshed by drinking water between drinks.

The brandy Alexander is a luxurious, creamy cocktail that has been popular throughout the 20th century. It is a brandy version of the gin-based Alexander cocktail and, honestly, brandy does make the better Alexander.
The cream and creme de cacao are a perfect pairing for the rich taste of a decent brandy, particularly on cold winter nights. The brandy Alexander is also a luscious after dinner drink that pairs well with chocolate desserts.
What You'll Need
- 1 ounce brandy
- 1 ounce dark creme de cacao
- 1 ounce cream
How to Make It
- Pour the ingredients into a cocktail shaker with ice cubes.
- Shake well.
- Strain into a chilled cocktail glass.
- Garnish with a dusting of nutmeg.
The Brandy
Most brandies will do a great job in the brandy Alexander and there's no need to spend a fortune on this drink (save the really good brandy for a B&B). Instead, choose a decent, moderately priced brandy from brands like Jacques Cardin, Hennessy, Korbel, or the like.
Also, don't overlook small distilleries. Some of the best brandies made today are coming out of America's craft distillery movement and there may be a great option in your own backyard.
The Chocolate Liqueur
There is a big difference between cream and creme liqueurs, particularly when we talk about chocolate. Creme de cacao is not a creamy liquor and it has a subtle flavor of cocoa though it is rather sweet. The brandy Alexander was not necessarily designed to be a 'chocolate' cocktail in our modern sense. Instead, it should have a hint of the flavor to accent the cream and brandy.
What does this mean to you? To make an authentic brandy Alexander (and arguably, a better one), stay away from those heavy, creamy chocolate liqueurs. Look for a good creme de cacao while avoiding the really cheap ones as they're often artificially flavored. Bols, Marie Brizard, and Tempus Fugit all make a great creme de cacao and you will find that they're surprisingly affordable.
Choose your preferred heaviness when it comes to the cream. Regular cream and half & half are the two top recommendations. Stay away from milk and heavy cream because they are too light or too heavy.
How Strong Is the Brandy Alexander?
The brandy Alexander may look all nice and innocent and in comparison to other 'up' brandy cocktails like the metropolitan, it is. With an 80-proof brandy and taking the average creme de cacao, we get a drink that's around 19 percent ABV (38 proof).

The Brandy Alexander is a dessert drink: chocolatey, sweet, creamy and smooth. Drinkers sometimes refer to it as a “milkshake” because the alcohol taste is so light. It’s a popular choice for occasional drinkers, but it’s also beloved by many veteran cocktail drinkers.
Don’t be fooled by the taste, however. Far from being weak, this drink contains a standard serving of brandy, plus an ounce of liqueur. The only mixer is an ounce of half-and-half (or, for those of you in regions where half-and-half isn’t a thing, single cream, or equal parts whole milk + whipping cream).
It works wonderfully as an after dinner drink because it’s sweet enough to replace dessert. You can make it even more sweet by topping it with whipped cream.
If you want to serve this one with food, think about what goes well with milk chocolate. Orange slices or berries, for example. Nuts of any variety go nicely with it, too. Salty treats like bacon or asiago cheese can also work surprisingly well. You could try to pair it with a meal, but the richness of this drink works better with appetizers or light snacks.
This is a great drink to serve at parties – you can even mix up a pitcher in advance. While you don’t need an occasion to enjoy it, it makes a great choice for holiday entertaining.
Brandy Alexander Recipe
- 1 1/2 ounces brandy
- 1 ounce dark creme de cacao
- 1 ounce half-and-half
- 1/4 teaspoon grated nutmeg
Fill a shaker halfway with ice cubes. Pour in the brandy, creme de cacao, and the half-and-half. Shake well and strain into a cocktail glass. Sprinkle the grated nutmeg over the top. Tip: grind a fresh, whole nutmeg over the top of the drink and it’ll have more flavor than ground nutmeg from a jar.

The Brandy Alexander was a darned popular drink when I was working Upper East Side bars in Manhattan during the ‘70s, and when carefully crafted it can be a quality quaff. But where did it come from?
It’s obviously a pimped-out version of the classic Alexander cocktail, mixing brandy instead of gin with crème de cacao and cream. But whoever eighty-sixed the British gin and welcomed the French cognac to the party is, I believe, lost to history.
One of the earliest known printed recipes for the Alexander can be found in Hugo Ensslin’s 1916 Recipes for Mixed Drinks. The cocktail, according to historian Barry Popik, was likely born at Rector’s, New York’s premier pre-Prohibition lobster palace. The bartender there, a certain Troy Alexander, created his eponymous concoction in order to serve a white drink at a dinner celebrating Phoebe Snow.
Phoebe Snow, I should explain, was a fictitious character used in an advertising campaign for the Delaware, Lackawanna and Western Railroad. The company wanted to get the message across that it powered its locomotives with anthracite, a clean-burning variety of coal. The ads emphasized this by showing Ms. Snow traveling while wearing a snow-white dress.
Getting back to the Brandy Alexander, I should note that it was first known as the Alexander #2. Want to know the secret to making the drink? Go heavy on the brandy and light on the sweet stuff. My recipe is a decent jumping-off point; you can play with it to make it your own. Try the original gin-based Alexander, too. It’s a mighty fine drink.

- 1 oz Dark crème de cacao
- 1 oz Cream
- Garnish: Freshly grated nutmeg
- Glass: Cocktail

A Brandy Alexander is a creamy, brandy-based cocktail that is served in a martini glass. Recipes for the Brandy Alexander date as far back as 1916 and while there are several rumors about who created the drink, the commonly accepted origin if from a New York bartender in the pre-Prohibition era. It's a simple drink, requiring only three ingredients to make your own tasty Brandy Alexander.
- 2 ounces cognac or brandy
- 1 ounce creme de cacao
- 1 ounce half -and-half
- Nutmeg
Key to a delicious Brandy Alexander is using a quality, fine-aged brandy. Cognac is an acceptable substitute, but stay away from cheap brandy or your Brandy Alexander will have an astringent and bitter taste.
Fill a cocktail shaker 1/2 to 2/3 full with ice.
Pour in the brandy, creme de cacao, and half-and-half. Shake five or six times to mix the ingredients and chill the mixture.
Strain the liquid into a martini glass. It will likely be foamy, this is due to shaking the half & half and is completely natural.
Sprinkle the top of the martini with a dash of nutmeg and serve.
If you have fresh nutmeg available, use a very fine grater to grate it over the top of the martini and make it stand out.
