11 Grown Up Cocktails Without the Alcohol

Maybe you're still eating light, or maybe you just don't like drinking that much. Either way, it can be tough to find non alcoholic cocktails that have complex flavors and feel grown up. So as you plan your Valentine's Day celebration consider these mixed drinks that skip the alcohol but are still every bit as festive:

Basil Lemon Syrup: a great starter for lots of drinks. Mix in some bubbly water, a dash of cranberry juice and some fresh basil or mix it with some meyer lemonade for a tart lip smacker.

Stormy Monday: a take on the Dark and Stormy, mix ginger beer with lime and bitters.

Lemon Verbena and Orange Blossom Fizz: mixes one of our favorite flavors, lemon verbena, with a little something exotic. If you can't find any verbena, try a lemon verbena tisane or infusion and allow to cool, then mix the orange blossom water with that.

Blackberry and Elderflower Spritzer with Mint: employs fresh berries, some bubbly and you can make it as sweet or sour as you like.

La Boheme Noir: a mix of black tea and lavender infused honey

Classic Shirley Temple with a twist: using a fresh DIY grenadine syrup mixed with a bt of lime to take the sweetness down a notch.

Faux Mojito: using a standard mojito recipe, omit the alcohol and make sure to use plenty of fresh mint.

Coco Cola: this one uses coconut milk, coke and lime juice in a cocktail shaker.

Sophisticated Lady: a not too sweet mocktail with a muddled, salted cucumber, shaken over ice with cranberry juice, lime juice and simple syrup, then filtered and served over ice.

Sweet and Salty Limeaid: not for everyone, this salty take on traditonal limeaid is popular in thai restuarants but is an acquired taste.

Meyer Lemon Sangria: use that winter citrus with some ripe apples to create a non alcoholic sangria.

Try a Shrub: it's basically drinkable vinegar and the complexity of the flavor really helps make it feel more like an adult beverage. See some recipes for making your own shrub here.

And remember, for an added dimension you can use maple syrup in place of a simple syrup or you can infuse your simple syrup to have flavors like lemon verbena and rosemary.

    Cocktail alkohol

Not necessarily. Although they have fewer calories, many light beers have almost as much alcohol as regular beer—about 85% as much, or 4.2% versus 5.0% alcohol by volume, on average.

Check the alcohol content of your beverage. Malt beverages are not required to list their alcohol content on the labels, so you may need to visit the bottler's Web site.

How many "drinks" are in a bottle of wine?

A typical 25-ounce (750 ml) bottle of table wine holds about 5 "standard" drinks, each containing about 5 ounces. This serving size of wine contains about the same amount of alcohol as a 12-ounce regular beer or 1.5 ounces of 80-proof spirits.

Get to know what 5 ounces looks like by measuring it out at home. That way you can estimate how many standard drinks you're being served in a restaurant or bar that uses large glasses and generous serving sizes.

Mixing alcohol with certain medications can cause nausea, headaches, drowsiness, fainting, a loss of coordination, internal bleeding, heart problems, and difficulties in breathing. Alcohol can also make a medication less effective. For more information, see Harmful Interactions: Mixing Alcohol with Medicines.

Examples of medical conditions for which it's safest to avoid drinking include liver disease (such as from hepatitis C), bipolar disorder, abnormal heart rhythm, and chronic pain.

Among the dangers of underage drinking:

    • Each year, an estimated 5,000 people under age 21 die from alcohol-related injuries.
    • The younger people are when they start to drink, the more likely they are to become alcoholic at some point in their lives.
    • Underage drinking is illegal—an arrest can lead to losing a job, a driver's license, or a college scholarship.

Even moderate amounts of alcohol can significantly impair driving performance and your ability to operate other machinery, whether or not you feel the effects of alcohol.

Heavy drinking during pregnancy can cause brain damage and other serious problems in the baby. Because it is not yet known whether any amount of alcohol is safe for a developing baby, women who are pregnant or may become pregnant should not drink.

    Highest risk

About 50% of people who drink in this group have an alcohol use disorder.

    Increased risk

This "increased risk" category contains three different drinking pattern groups. Overall, nearly 20% of people who drink in this category have an alcohol use disorder.

    Low-risk drinking

Only about 2% of drinkers in this group has an alcohol use disorder.

A U.S. "standard" drink contains about 0.6 fluid ounces or 14 grams of "pure" alcohol. That's the amount in 12 ounces of regular beer, 5 ounces of table wine, or 1.5 ounces of 80-proof distilled spirits.

Distilled spirits include vodka, whiskey, gin, rum, and tequila.

    Light to moderate drinking

    • Men: Up to 2 drinks per day
    • Women: Up to 1 drink per day

    • Men: More than 4 drinks on any day or more than 14 drinks per week
    • Women: More than 3 drinks on any day or more than 7 drinks per week

    Low-risk drinking

Men: No more than 4 drinks on any day and no more than 14 per week

Women: No more than 3 drinks on any day and no more than 7 per week

People with a parent, grandparent, or other close relative with alcoholism have a higher risk for becoming dependent on alcohol. For many, it may be difficult to maintain low-risk drinking habits. For more information, see A Family History of Alcoholism: Are You at Risk?

Pace yourself: It's best to have no more than one standard drink per hour, with nonalcoholic "drink spacers" between alcohol beverages. On any day, stay within low-risk levels of no more than 4 drinks for men or 3 for women. Note that it takes about 2 hours for the adult body to completely break down a single drink. Do not drive after drinking.

For comparison, regular beer is 5% alcohol by volume (alc/vol), table wine is about 12% alc/vol, and straight 80-proof distilled spirits is 40% alc/vol.

The percent alcohol by volume (alc/vol) for distilled spirits is listed on bottle labels and may be found online as well. It is half the "proof," such that 80-proof spirits is 40% alc/vol.

Opioids and Alcohol a Dangerous Cocktail

Drinking while taking the painkillers can hamper breathing, especially among seniors, study finds

    By Robert Preidt

WEDNESDAY, Feb. 8, 2017 (HealthDay News) -- Drinking alcohol while taking powerful opioid painkillers can trigger a potentially deadly respiratory problem, particularly in seniors, a new study warns.

"Unfortunately, we're seeing more fatalities and people in emergency rooms after having misused or abused legally prescribed opioids, like oxycodone, while having consumed alcohol," said study author Dr. Albert Dahan.

"Respiratory depression [where breathing becomes very shallow or stops temporarily] is a potentially fatal complication of opioid use. We found alcohol exacerbated the already harmful respiratory effects of opioids," Dahan said.

Dahan is head of the Anesthesia and Pain Research Unit at Leiden University Medical Center in the Netherlands.

In the study, the researchers assessed how mixing the opioid painkiller oxycodone and alcohol affected 12 younger volunteers, aged 21 to 28, and 12 older volunteers, aged 66 to 77. None of the participants had taken opioids previously.

Oxycodone, an ingredient in the brand-name drugs OxyContin and Percocet, is widely prescribed to treat chronic pain.

More than 2 million Americans abuse opioids, according to the U.S. National Institute on Drug Abuse. Every day, 78 people die from opioid overdoses, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Meanwhile, reports have shown that these deaths often involve other substances such as alcohol, the researchers noted.

The study authors reported that taking just one oxycodone tablet with a modest amount of alcohol increased the risk of respiratory depression.

The older volunteers were more likely than the younger ones to have repeated episodes where they temporarily stopped breathing.

The study was published online Feb. 7 in the journal Anesthesiology.

"We hope to increase awareness regarding the dangers of prescription opioids, the increased danger of the simultaneous use of opioids and alcohol, and that elderly people are at an even greater increased risk of this potentially life-threatening side effect," Dahan said in a journal news release.

"Ultimately, people should know that it is never a good idea to drink alcohol with opioids," he concluded.
