Couch Club is a gin lover’s paradise. With over 130 varieties in stock, this cocktail bar is equipped to prepare a large array of gin-based drinks. For those who do not care too much for gin, there are many other options on the extensive cocktail menu. Padres is the place to go for sports fans. It has the feel of a typical American sports bar with a big-screen television and sports memorabilia on the walls, but also has a few quirks – such as the silver Zeppelin that runs back and forth above the bar. Café Glockenspiel at Marienplatz is one of the classics among the rooftop bars in Munich. 10 Mexican cocktails for Cinco de Mayo
Really, it’s an American holiday, and we celebrate it the way we do all holidays with other cultures as their focus (St. Patrick’s Day and Oktoberfest, for example): By getting blind drunk.
If you want to celebrate Cinco de Mayo in Mexico, you’ll have to be in the state of Puebla or organize your own rag-tag group of US expats to party down American-Mexican style.
The places where you can expect to celebrate Cinco de Mayo
in style are in white.
Puebla is where the battle was fought against the French in 1861. An estimated 4,000 Mexican troops defeated a French army twice their number on the 5th of May.
The holiday, as we know it, was born out of American Chicano pride in the 1940s, but its recognition as a national holiday didn’t come until 2005. Its wide scale popularity didn’t really reach its stride until the 1980s when beer manufacturers put their corporate weight behind marketing it. So now you know.
Beer Drinks
In Mexico, there’s no shame in being a lightweight. Mixing beer is not frowned upon. For all of these recipes, a frozen glass is a nice touch. And if you need to take the sting out of drinking Coors Light, these techniques can go a long way in improving the flavor of substandard brews.
Mmm. Chelada. Photo (also used as feature photo):
Beer (This is best with a lighter beer like Corona or Pacifico.)
Take your chilly glass and dip the rim in a saucer of water, then salt — course salt is better.
Sprinkle a tiny bit of salt in the bottom of the glass, and add your lime juice. Fill the glass about half way with ice, then add your beer. The juice from half a lime should be about right for one chelada if your limes are juicy.
Want to be adventurous? Add a little chile powder to your salt.
The michelada is just the same as the chelada above, but versions call for dashes of Worcester (jugo Maggi), soy, and Tabasco sauces. When I was bartending on the border in El Paso, the chelada above was called a michelada, so there’s regional and individual variation in recipes and names. Just don’t overdo it with your sauces, and it’ll probably be tasty.
Chavela or ojo rojo
Depending on who you ask, this may be called Clamato y cerveza, a chavela, a chabela, or an ojo rojo. The folks at Budweiser call their stab at a prefab version a chelada. The priniciple is the same as the above drinks.
Worcester and/or soy and/or tabasco sauces
This is pretty much like a Bloody Mary, but instead of vodka, you use beer — double breakfast of champions. Keep your ratio about half Clamato and half beer to do it right, and serve it on ice.
When you think of Mexican drinks, tequila probably tops the list. If you want to enjoy it the Mexican way, don’t commit alcohol abuse by slamming it. Get a nice bottle of El Tesoro Añejo, Chinaco, or Hornitos, chill it down and sip it slowly. But if it’s cocktails you’re after, here are a few recipes:
México Lindo
México Lindo, kiwi style.
1 shot of tequila (1.5 oz.)
The juice of 1/2 a lemon
Splash of Curaçao (.5 oz.)
Combine all ingredients in a shaker with ice, strain, and serve in a martini glass. Garnish with a cherry.
Coctel Adelita
This one combines tequila with Kahlúa (from Veracruz).
5 parts tequila (2.5 oz.)
1 part Kahlúa (1 oz)
The juice of 1/4 of a lemon
Combine all ingredients in a shaker with ice, strain, and serve in a martini glass. Garnish with a lemon.
If you’re going to go for the old standard, it’s best to do it right and go top shelf all the way.
2 oz. top shelf tequila*
1 oz. Grand Marnier or Cointreau
2 oz. orange juice
1 oz. lime juice
Salt the rim of your (hopefully chilled) glass, add all liquids to your tumbler with the ice, shake the bejesus out of it, and pour it into your glass. You can garnish this with oranges or limes, and the fresher the juice, the more delicious the drink.
A freaky version of this one can be made with Curaçao instead of Grand Marnier. The orange juice combines with it to make it a very odd green.

Tequila tonic or TnT
Matador founder, Ross Borden says, “Once I tried these, I was addicted to them, and my group of friends was the next domino to fall. I have since switched to tequila-soda because I think the sugar in tonic gives you bad hangovers, but it’s delicious if you get the right tequila. El Tesoro Añejo is my favorite.”

Top shelf tequila
The ratio for this is 2:1, tonic, tequila. Serve it on ice and garnish with a lime. It’s that simple.
Extra spicy Bloody Maria
If you want to get Tex-Mex, why not switch up your Bloody Mary for a Bloody Maria? Good luck saying it in Spanish. If you want to try, that’s Maria ensangrentada, but I wouldn’t suggest trying to order it on your next trip south of the border. This recipe comes from CHOW.
2 oz. Tequila (chile infused if you must)
4 oz. tomato juice
1/2 tsp. freshly grated horseradish
3 dashes of Worcestershire sauce
3 dashes of hot sauce
1/2 teaspoon pickled jalapeño juice
A pinch of kosher salt
A pinch of freshly ground black pepper
A big squeeze of fresh lemon juice
Pinch celery seeds
1 medium pickled jalapeño
CHOW suggests straining this into a highball glass, I say you’re better off serving it on ice in a salt rimmed glass. Either way it comes out, it’s probably going to burn. The pickled jalapeño is for garnish.
Don’t like tequila or beer? That’s okay, honey. Why not have a mudslide and celebrate the American melting pot TGIFriday’s style?
1 oz. Irish cream
Shake it, strain it, and serve it over ice. To make it extra special, you can blend it and top it with whipped cream and chocolate syrup or a cherry.

Flaming Lamborghini
1 oz Blue Curacao
1 oz Bailey’s Irish Cream
Pour the Sambuca and Kahlua into a cocktail glass and give the drinker a straw. Pour the Bailey’s and blue Curacao into two separate shot glasses on either side of the cocktail glass. Set the concoction ablaze in the cocktail glass and start to drink through the straw (this drink should be drank in one suck). Once the glass is almost empty, pour the Bailey’s and blue Curacao into the cocktail glass and keep drinking till it’s all gone! [Recipe courtesy of The Webtender.]

Flaming Dr. Pepper
3/4 shot Amaretto
1/4 shot of 151 rum
1/2 glass of beer
Fill the shot glass about ¾ full with amaretto and top it off with enough 151 proof rum to make it burn. Put the shot glass in a pint glass or beer mug and fill the glass with beer (right up to the level of the shot glass). Light the amaretto/151 and let it burn awhile. Blow it out and slam it. 1/3 shot Irish Cream
1/3 shot Grand Marnier or Cointreau
A couple of drops of 151 rum
Fill a shot glass 1/3 full of Kahlua. Then layer the Irish Cream on top by pouring it onto the back of the spoon that is held against the rim of the shot glass. Bailey’s Comet
1 + 1/2 oz Bailey’s Irish Cream
1+ 1/2 oz Butterscotch Schnapps
3/4 oz Goldschlager
1 dash Cinnamon
Shake the Bailey‘s, butterscotch schnapps, and Goldschlager with ice in a cocktail shaker and strain into a cocktail glass. Put a shallow layer of 151-proof rum on top. Light the rum on fire, then immediately sprinkle a generous dash of cinnamon on top. The cinnamon will sparkle and flame. Don’t let it burn too long, or the Bailey’s will curdle! 1 + 1/2 oz Cointreau
1 + 1/2 oz Sambuca
Few shakes of Cinnamon
Here’s one that is as complicated as Queimada (Galicia’s fiery drink ritual).
Place a saucer down on a table or bar. Put a shot glass filled with Sambuca in the middle of the saucer. Grab a pint glass and pour a shot or so of Cointreau into the glass. Light the Cointreau and swirl the glass until the sides are warm. Pour the lit Cointreau into the shot glass, igniting the Sambuca and spilling the flaming mixture onto the saucer. While swirling the pint glass over the flames to capture the alcohol vapor, shake some cinnamon from a safe distance on to the drink and then cover the shot glass with the pint glass.
Blow out the flames and then take the pint glass off of the saucer. Quickly drop in a few ice cubes into the glass and immediately seal in the alcohol vapor in with your palm. Shake the glass vigorously a few times and have the consumer stick a straw through your fingers and suck in all the vapor. Then the straw should be used to take down the shot and clean the saucer. 1/4 Green Crème de Menthe
1/4 Crème de Banana
This one is as bizarre as some of the most out-there drinks. Layer in a shot glass in this order: grenadine, Crème de Menthe, Crème de Banana, rum. Light the rum and then suck it down with a straw. [Recipe courtesy of Drinks Mixer]
Flaming Sambuca
1 oz Black Sambuca
Put 3 coffee beans in a shot glass and add the Sambuca. Light the Sambuca and let burn for 10 seconds or so. Cover the glass with your hand to extinguish, then inhale the air underneath your hand. Drink the shot. [Recipe courtesy of Drinks Mixer ]
Flaming Gorilla
1 part Peppermint Schnapps
Pour into shot glass, layering ingredients in this order: peppermint schnapps, Kahlua, rum. Light on fire and extinguish after 15 seconds. [Recipe courtesy of Drinks Mixer]
Flaming Mouthwash
1/2 oz Blue Curacao Liqueur
1/2 oz Green Crème de Menthe
1 tsp Everclear

Cocktail 16, 17 und 18: Schumann’s Bar
Als wir im Schumann’s ankommen, der letzten Bar für diesen Abend (ihr erinnert euch: wir erzählen den Abend verkehrtherum) sind wir nicht betrunken. Aber angetrunken und müde. Vom vielen Laufen durch dieses stressige und verwinkelte Höllenloch, das München nun mal ist. Ein bisschen enttäuscht noch und entmutigt noch von der Bar davor. Dass das Schumann’s, dieser sagenumwobene Ort, benannt nach seinem sagenumwobenen Chef als letzte Bar auf unserer Tour gelandet ist, das liegt an den Öffnungszeiten – die meisten anderen schließen um zwei, hier geht der Abend bis drei.
Wir finden den Eingang zunächst nicht, laufen mehrmals an etwas vorbei, das wie eine Filmpremiere aussieht und mit seinen hektischen und geschäftigen Leuten um 2 Uhr nachts einfach nur nervt. Wir „unterhalten“ uns mit ein paar ziemlich betrunkenen, aber ziemlich netten Damen darüber, wo denn das Schumann’s wäre. Sie wissen’s auch nicht. Wir stehen davor. Oder zumindest vor dem Schumann’s Camparino, der angeschlossenen kleinen Cafe-Bar, die so dunkel und leer ist, dass wir uns erst nicht sicher sind, wo wir da jetzt sind und ob das das Schumann’s sein kann. War es dann aber einen Vorhang weiter doch.
Das Schumann’s: was ist das, wo sind wir hier?
Als wir hineinkommen ist die Mischung, ziemlich genau wie man sie sich vorstellt: An der Bar unterhält sich ein aufgeregter Kreis von scheinbar gelangweilten Menschen in karierten Westen und mit Halstüchern mit einem Betrunkenen. An einem Ende des Tresens sitzen einzelne, ernste Männer in schwarzen Anzügen, ohne Krawatten, dafür mit goldenen Uhren, mit interessiertem Blick ans andere Ende des Tresens. Dort wiederum sitzen Frauen in Kleidern ohne Stoff am Rücken, die regelmäßig Champagner vor die Nase gestellt bekommen, scheinbar ohne welchen zu bestellen.
Als wir ankommen, sind alle Tische reserviert, obwohl die Bar bis auf den Tresen fast leer ist. Der sympathische und offene Kellner kommt auf uns zu, fragt uns kurz ob wir zu dritt sind und setzt uns an den nächsten „reservierten“ Tisch. Die Karte liest sich wie das Reader’s Digest von Schumann’s legendärem Bar-Buch. Wohlgemerkt: Gefühlt sind alle Rezepte aus der Bar-Bibel drin, nur das Drumherum wurde gekappt.
Wir sehen uns ehrfurchtsvoll um. Der Raum atmet die Stimmung der Münchner Schickeria, die weißen Kittel der Kellner und Bartender lassen die Herren wie eine Mischung aus Wissenschaftler und Koch wirken. So anders. Und obwohl hier scheinbar viel Geld sitzt, wir nicht nach Geld aussehen und wir mit unseren verpeilten, müden Augen gefühlt so gar nicht reinpassen in diese Bar, die modern und altmodisch auf einmal wirkt, fühlen wir uns geborgen, aufgehoben und genau richtig. Also bestellen wir.
Die Cocktails in der Schumann’s Bar
Das Schumann’s ist eine ganz klassische Cocktailbar, bedeutet also: jeder Cocktail-Klassiker aus der ersten Hälfte des 20. Jahrhunderts ist hier bekannt und steht wahrscheinlich auch auf der Karte. In den 70ern und 80ern ist Charles Schumann höchstselbst verantwortlich für einige der moderneren Klassiker, die selbst das dunkle Cocktail-Mittelalter überstanden haben: Tiefseetaucher, Schwermatrose, Swimming Pool, all das hat dieser Mann als erster gemixt. Aber auch heute noch entstehen hier regelmäßig großartige neue, moderne Drinks. Wir erzählen euch das an dieser Stelle nur, weil unsere Cocktail-Runde im Schumann’s zufällig und ungewollt eine Zeitreise durch die Welt der Cocktails geworden ist. Eine wundervolle.
Der Autor dieses Artikels bestellt sich einen Sazerac, einen Cocktail-Klassiker des 19. Jahrhunderts. Sowas wie der Old Fashioned für Leute, denen Old Fashioned zu weibisch ist. Weil er den schon immer mal vom Profi probieren wollte, aber irgendwie noch nie dazu kam. Die Mischung aus Absinth, Rye Whiskey und Bitters sollte eigentlich reinknallen wie Seuche – ist aber mild, weich und spannend-würzig. Der gigantische, quadratische Eisblock im Glas sprüht nur so über vor Style. Geiler Drink.
Der Swimming Pool, diese Mischung aus Ananassaft, Rum, Cream of Coconut und Wodka, dieses süße Monster, das viele Bartender heutzutage regelrecht verachten – das ist der Drink der Wahl von Cocktailbart-Thomas. Und er hat nichts, aber auch gar nichts, mit den Beach-Party-Drinks zu tun, an die wir uns alle mit Grauen erinnern. Er ist süß und cremig, fruchtig, aber alles in der Waage. Er schmeckt so altmodisch, wie er ist – aber so wie Salami-Pizza altmodisch schmeckt, nicht wie Hawaii-Toast es tut. Ihr versteht schon. Geiler Drink.
Unsere wundervolle, junge, überaus attraktive und ortskundige Begleitung entscheidet sich für den London Leaves: einen Cocktail, den der ehemalige Head-Bartender des Schumann’s, Mario Zils, hier erfunden hat und der mit der Mischung aus Gin, Minzblättern und Gurkenscheiben ganz nah am heutigen Gin Tonic– und Moscow Mule-Hype schwimmt. Dank Apfelsaft und Wasser nimmt sich der Drink aber mehr zurück, ist frischer, süffiger und etwas ganz eigenes. Er macht wach und belebt, ist leicht. Geiler Drink.
Was wir am Schumann’s lieben – und was nicht
Wir waren nur einen Abend hier, also haben wir schlicht und ergreifend nicht die Fachkompetenz, um einen Satz über diese ehrwürdigen Hallen mit „Schumann’s ist“ anzufangen. Aber als wir die Bar um 03.00 verlassen, sind wir mit dem Abend, der im Mittelteil etwas kränkelte, versöhnt. Die Kundschaft und die Stimmung im Schumann’s, das war so, wie sich München in Filmen und Serien zeigt: Stilvoll und gehoben, fast schon abgehoben zwar, aber ohne die Nase in der Luft. Etwas kühl, aber gastfreundlich. Von nüchterner Herzlichkeit. Das passt, genau so wie’s ist. Wir kommen wieder.
