Oh Gosh!

MxMo: See You on the Flipside

January 17th, 2011

Looking back at my archives I’m slightly shocked to find I last took part in Mixology Monday over a year ago in June 2009. 2010 was something of a fallow year for Oh Gosh! but I’m hoping to change that in 2011 and what better way to start than with the first Mixology Monday of [. ]

Köln – Part I

This year prior to arriving in Berlin for BCB I made a short detour to Cologne, a city I was eager to visit after hearing so many good things about its bars. On my first night I visited two bars – Al Salam and Shepheard.

A quick update

A quick update about what’s going on at Oh Gosh!, including a nomination for an award, a visit Poland, and a forthcoming visit Germany.

Heaven’s Dog – Part I

Join Jackie Patterson at Heaven’s Dog in San Francisco and enjoy one of her original creations, the Fleet Street. Based on the classic Champs-Élysées cocktail, it replaces Cognac with gin and makes great use of The Bitter Truth Celery bitters.

Gran Classico Bitters

Hello? Is this thing still on…? A busy schedule of work, rest, and play has left Oh Gosh! a little neglected over the past couple of months. I can only apologise for the lack of updates, but hope to remedy the situation this month. Starting with a traditional Italian bitters I came across recently…

Coming Out

The most famous cocktail in the world, the Martini, is also a misunderstood one. These days most associated with James Bond and vodka, a real Martini should be made with gin and most definitely stirred, not shaken. It’s certainly not a cocktail for beginners, so find out what I made of my very first Martini.

The Original Aviation

August 15th, 2007

A recent darling of the cocktail world, the Aviation is a wonderful mix of gin, maraschino and lemon juice. Until recently that was as good as it got, but now with the availability of crème de violette we can make the original recipe, which provides the beautiful blue tint that perhaps earned this cocktail its name.

Aromatic Bitters

September 28th, 2007

With so many different aromatic bitters available these days just how do they differ, and which ones are worth using in your drinks? A comparison of Fee Brothers Old Fashion Aromatic bitters, Fee Brothers Whiskey Barrel-Aged bitters, The Bitter Truth Old Time Aromatic bitters and Peychaud’s bitters.

A toast to Old Tom

January 29th, 2008

Old Tom gin, a sweeter gin that was very popular during the eighteenth-century and is often called for in classic cocktail books, has been unavailable for many years. However Christopher Hayman, whose great-grandfather created Beefeater gin, recently launched Hayman’s Old Tom gin, so just how different is Old Tom to London Dry?

Singapore Sling(s)

October 19th, 2007

With many classic cocktails it’s difficult to find any information about it at all. The Singapore Sling, however, has an abundance of information and history written about it. The problem is much of it is so contradictory working out the actual history of the drink is rather difficult. With so many recipes around, which are worth making?

It’s Pimm’s O’Clock!

The English summer means the return of one of my favourite long drinks, the Pimm’s Cup. A firm favourite here, it may just be the perfect drink for a hot afternoon. Pimm’s isn’t the only fruit cup around though, so how does it compare with the competition, and just what fruit and mixers should go in to the perfect Pimm’s cup?

The Varnish – Part II

Oh Gosh! TV pays another visit to The Varnish in Downtown LA. Located behind a door at the back of famous restaurant Cole’s, The Varnish is a speakeasy-style venture from New York bar supremo Sasha Petraske. Today bar manager Eric Alperin makes us their version of the delicious Queen’s Park Swizzle.

G’Vine Gin Connoisseur World Finals

This week sees the culmination of the G’Vine Gin Connoisseur programme with the world finals in Cognac, France. Twelve bartenders will battle it out, in perhaps the most the most enduring and difficult competition I have ever seen, to take the Connoisseur Crown, competing in blind gin tastings, speed pouring, and a finale in Paris [. ]

Where in the world is Jay Hepburn?

Things have been decidedly quiet here at Oh Gosh! over the past month or two – a fact for which I can only apologise. May and June have seen a flurry of trips for me – nothing compared to the amount of travel the likes of Xavier Padovani of Hendrick’s or John Gakuru of Sagatiba [. ]

Smuggler’s Cove – Part I

Join Martin Cate at Smuggler’s Cove in San Francisco, a shrine to Tiki libations and rum goodness. In this first episode Martin mixes up a Calibogus, a contemporary take on the original mixture of spruce beer, molasses and rum that was popular in the colonial taverns of the US and Canada.

The Varnish – Part I

April 20th, 2010

Oh Gosh! TV begins a tour of West Coast bars at The Varnish in Downtown LA. Located behind a door at the back of famous restaurant Cole’s, The Varnish is a speakeasy-style venture from New York bar supremo Sasha Petraske. Pull up a stool with bar manager Eric Alperin for a chat, and a classic Brooklyn cocktail.

Exploring the Borough II

Completing an exploration of the Brooklyn cocktail variations named after Brooklyn neighbourhoods, a trend started by Vincenzo Errico’s Red Hook. Our final three cocktails are the Cobble Hill, Carroll Gardens, and Bushwick.

69 Colebrooke Row – Part III

In our last visit to 69 Colebrooke Row Tony Conigliaro shakes up a Somerset Sour. An ode to West Country cider, the cocktail uses brandy distilled from cider apples, and a float of traditional English cider. Rounding off the apple theme is a vacuum-cooked apple slice infused with the essence of hay, for the true Somerset experience.

    Cocktail Lounge & Wine Bar

It’s time to forget that tattered madness of the outside world and seek refuge from the storm. SHELTER exists for the weary urban traveler to step into a new world, a private alcove offering a selection of delicately crafted cocktails, precisely chosen wines, and a variety of tasting items to sate one’s hunger.

Combining roots in pre-prohibition style libations with cutting-edge, experimental cocktail technology, SHELTER features a seasonally rotating cocktail list, as well as an extensive selection of sought-after spirits and wines. Our menu is creatively designed to emulate what might be created in a locked survival vault. We promise only one thing, an intimate fallout experience.

The SHELTER cocktail bar is a one-of-kind location, unique to Calgary. Designed for small groups and parties, the room houses several standout design pieces, including an artfully decorated wall of gas masks, and a beautifully crafted light fixture featuring over 5,000 individually hung bulbs.

    Rations & Libations

Vault Stored & New World Selections

Inspired by the rations that might be stored in a fallout shelter, our food and drink menus are designed to play on old world cellar ingredients and foraged flavours from the new world. Blending resources from local merchants, and the food supply stored in our vault, our cuisine offers cured, pickled and fresh variants for an array of dietary preferences and tastes.

Our cocktail menu blends unconventional ingredients, modern spins on classic concoctions, and unique mixes, all designed to amuse the senses and intrigue the mind. Our wine selection houses old world classics and mystery bottles from across the ocean, while our new world menu hosts local gems from vineyards and wine culture throughout Canada.

    Access & Entry

    Hours & Decorum

Gaining access to SHELTER is not complicated. We request our visitors abide by a few house rules:

Honest, clean attire requested. Treat the staff with respect and class. No reservations. If the location is at capacity, we will call you when your table is ready. And finally, don’t invite anyone to SHELTER you wouldn’t bring to your mother’s house for Sunday dinner.
