1. Drinkspiration By Absolut

As the name would suggest, this app is all about getting you out of your old beverage rut with a little inspiration. Created by Swedish vodka brand Absolut, suggestions are categorized around vodka, gin, rum, brandy, whisky and tequila based drinks. It's a good-looking app with some quality content. The methods of suggestion are fun -- you can get "Drinkspiration" by location, time of day and even by background noise, with the app analyzing the volume to suggest "quiet" or "loud" drinks.

Great for: Suggestions for trying something new

2. Drinks & Cocktails by drinks999.co.uk

1,200 drinks and cocktail recipes for free ain't bad. This app is lovely to look at, with great graphics on a clean, white background. Functionality is basic -- in the main part of the app, the recipes are listed alphabetically. The "category" option only offers by glass shape or color but browsing the latter will send you into a haze of single-hued loveliness that might well inspire you to stick to that one color for an entire evening's imbibing.

3. 8,500+ Drink & Cocktail Recipes Free

Boasting 8,500+ recipes, it could be argued that this app stands for quantity over quality. Much of the 8,500 options are variations. For example, there are three versions of an Afterburner and six of a Lemon Drop. The instructions are clear, and as a pocket reference, it's certainly more than comprehensive and worth the free download.

Great for: Catching a bartender with an obscure request!

4. Top Martini Recipes

If you're mad for martinis, this is a must-download. Essentially a list of the many variations of the classic cocktail, the app offers a nice photo, list of ingredients and detailed instructions on how to make each one. Like other apps here, Top Martini Recipes allows you to shake your phone for a random recipe. The retro cocktail shaker graphic shown on screen somehow makes it even more fun.

5. Drink & Cocktail Pro Lite

As a "Lite" version of the Pro app (which boasts more than 20,000 recipes!) this is a decent, free, well-rounded option with a nice bonus section on bartending info. There are two features that make it stand out for us, though. First off, the built-in unit converter is a fabulous addition and incredibly useful if you're referencing both U.S. and European recipes. Secondly, the ability to narrow down recipes by ingredient is useful if you want to use up that bottle of creme de menthe that's been lurking at the back of your drink cabinet for too long.

6. Drinks and Cocktails

This doesn't offer a lot more than the other apps we've featured, but its scroll wheel interface and competent search functionality means it stands up well to use in a bustling bar -- especially if you've already had a few.

Great for: Going out on the town

7. Mixology: Drink Recipes (Free)

Another app, another decent recipe database for free. Mixology also offers a particularly well done "Cabinet" function that lets you tick off the ingredients you have on hand in order to show you what cocktails you can create.

Great for: Making cocktails with limited supplies

8. thebar.com

From drink uber-brand Diageo, thebar.com is a slick corporate effort with good-looking graphics. What it does well is offer drink suggestions based on events. There are recipes for all kinds of gatherings, including tailgating, horse racing, award show night, board game night, toga parties and events you might not even assume would go hand-in-hand with alcohol, such as brunch and book clubs.

Great for: The hostess-with-the-mostess!

9. inthespirit easy cocktails

This app offers a sensible list of approximately 400 cocktail recipes with nice pics and plainly worded ingredients and instructions. A good choice for cocktail-creating beginners, you can sort recipes by difficulty level, as well as by taste (creamy, dry, fruity, etc.), which also makes it a nice option for those with more fussy palettes.

Great for: Fussy drinkers and beginners

We're ending this list with something a little different from all the database apps previous. iSwig can be seen as a cocktail travel journal or a location-based social drinking game. With Facebook, Twitter, Foursquare and Flickr integration, you can check in, snap a pic, and tell all your fiends about the great grasshopper you just gulped in Greenwich Village. Need a bottle of tequila, stat, but don’t have the time to buy it? That’s where Thirstie comes in. Input your delivery address to this brand-new app and wait for it to tell you which wine and liquor stores are closest. Then shop from the comfort of your own home. Delivery is free and supposedly takes less than an hour—far less time than we usually like to spend browsing! The app’s service is currently available in New York, Chicago and Los Angeles, though we’re sure that if it catches on, that list will grow.

Got a bottle of rum, beet juice and apple cider in your pantry? Well, we can’t promise those three ingredients would make an enticing cocktail, but this app nonetheless helps keeps track of what you have in your cocktail cabinet—and it provides recipes that work with what you have on hand. If you don’t have quite what you need for a drink you’re craving, Liquor Cabinet also tells you what recipes are just one ingredient away. So close…

Bartender’s Choice, $2.99

If you’re no longer a novice bartender and are looking for a top-notch library of cocktail recipes, check out this modestly-priced option from Sam Ross of legendary New York bar Milk and Honey. You can sort recipes by base spirit, style of cocktail or “sensation.” It even has a few extra features, such as tips on garnishing and drink preparation. Mark the cocktail ingredients you have at home in the cabinet page and see what drinks you can make from them. The cabinet contains a large number of spirits, liquors and mixers. More ingredients are added when new packages are installed.

Get ideas on what ingredients to buy to prepare new drink recipes. The shopping assistant includes a cost estimate calculator which is a great way to plan the drinks for your next party. Set the currency in the Settings menu to have prices appear in your local currency.

Browse cocktail recipes by categories, packages or using the advanced search function. Drink recipes are categorized by base drink (gin, rum, tequila, vodka, brandy, champagne), type (classical, long drink, tropical, creamy, shooter, non-alcoholic), event (New Years, Christmas, St Patrick’s Day, Valentine's Day) and color (red, blue, green, pink, yellow).

If you’re new to bartending you’ll find the bartender guides section useful to learn more about mixology. The guides go through cocktail making basics from using bar tools, types of glassware all the way to garnishing tricks like creating a salt rim or a lemon spiral.

Mark drink recipes you like as favorites to find them easily next time. All cocktails also have a list of drinks that are of similar taste or style listed so you can explore other drinks you might like.

The application comes with lots of cocktail recipes at install and even more cocktails can be downloaded from packages which can be free or premium. The current packages include Alcohol Free (non-alcoholic cocktails), Shooters (a variation of shots), Basic Cocktails (a collection of well known cocktails), Christmas cocktails (wintery and holiday drinks), New Years cocktails (champagne and bubbly cocktails), Valentine’s Day (red, creamy and sweet drinks) and St Partrick’s Day (Irish themed and green cocktails), The Big Game (Super Bowl cocktails with themed American football drinks and special ones created for Super Bowl XLVI)

Love Your Liquor Cabinet

Mixology's Liquor Cabinet feature lets you input which ingredients you have on-hand and tells you which recipes you're able to make.

Select which types of liquor you have at home. Then tap Mixers on the nav bar and select which mixers you have. Finally, tap the blue Search button at the top-right corner of the screen, and you'll find a list of recipes that won't require a trip to the liquor store.

Try doing that with a bartender's bible!

Try Something New

Mixology's Random feature is great for discovering new recipes. The first spinner contains types of liquor, the second contains types of mixers, and the third contains types of glassware.

Looking for a tequila-based libation? Select tequila on the first spinner and lock it in. Looking for a shooter? Select the shot glass on the third spinner and lock that in. Then shake the phone or simply tap the Mix It Up button.

One random recipe will appear that meets your criteria. Tapping the Show More button will display all of the recipes that met your criteria.

Search By Ingredient

Mixology's Search By Ingredient feature makes it easy to see which ingredients are compatible with one another.

To see all recipes one can make with a particular ingredient, just add that ingredient to the criteria list.

The true power of this feature is that you may now search by multiple inredients. Each time you add a subsequent ingredient, you're only presented with what's compatible with your current list of criteria.

How do I install Cocktail?

Download Cocktail from the top of this page, then double click the disk image (.dmg) file to mount it on your desktop. This disk image contains an application that you need to drag to your Applications folder. After you have installed Cocktail you can eject the disk by either dragging it to the trash or pressing the Eject icon in the Finder sidebar.

How do I uninstall Cocktail and restore the default macOS settings?

You can remove Cocktail by launching it, then selecting the Uninstall Cocktail option from the Cocktail application menu.

Is Cocktail compatible with other utilities?

Cocktail is compatible with all the major utilities for macOS, including DiskWarrior, TechTool Pro, Data Rescue and others.

What is the easiest way to run Cocktail?

Cocktail has a built in function called the Pilot, which is the easiest way to automatically clean and maintain your system. The Pilot scheduler automatically runs Cocktail’s maintenance tasks at scheduled intervals, to use it you just select the tasks you want to run, set the frequency (daily or weekly) and the time of the day you want them to run.
