1. Maple Manhattan
Combine the bourbon, sweet vermouth, maple syrup and bitters in a cocktail shaker filled with ice. Shake several times, then strain into a chilled cocktail glass. Add a cherry on a pick for a garnish.
2. No’Easter
Combine the bourbon, lime juice and maple syrup in a cocktail shaker filled with ice. Shake several times. Strain into a rocks glass filled with ice. Add a splash of ginger beer on top and garnish with a lime wheel.
3. Maple Leaf Cocktail
Combine the ingredients in a cocktail shaker filled with ice. Shake several times. Strain into a chilled cocktail glass. Garnish with a cinnamon stick.
4. Kicking Cow Cocktail

5. Old Fashioned Canadian
- 2 oz Rye Whiskey

Combine the maple syrup and 2 dashes of bitters, stir to mix. Add ice cubes and rye whiskey Add a crispy strip of Canadian bacon to garnish.
6. Filibuster Cocktail
- 1 1/2 oz Rye Whiskey
- 3/4 oz fresh lemon juice
- 1/4 oz pure maple syrup
- 1 dash Angostura bitters
- 1 egg white

Combine the ingredients in a cocktail shaker with several ice cubes. Shake well and strain into a chilled cocktail glass. Add a twist of lemon to garnish.
7. Maple Syrup Martini
Add the vermouth and bitters to a mixing glass, add ice and stir well. Pour out half the liquid and add bourbon and maple syrup. Shake well, the strain into a chilled cocktail glass and serve.

6 Great Syrups to Buy For Cocktail-Making

When it comes to making cocktails at home, I'll admit I can be a bit lazy. I spend so much time focused on finding recipes and researching the perfect whiskey or gin for a specific drink that I sometimes overlook secondary ingredients like syrups. While I'd love to come up with my own house grenadine or tonic syrup, I often feel like I simply don't have the time to spend to make anything good enough to actually mix.
Thankfully, there's a growing crop of small producers creating brilliant syrups and cocktail mixers specifically to help make cocktail mixing at home effortless and fun. There have always been grenadines and margarita mixes for sale at the grocery store, but this new school of syrup makers are creating products that are so high-quality, that now, it's possible to easily make drinks at home that taste on par with what you will find in fancy cocktail bars.
These syrups are good for more than just cocktails, too: savory syrups are a great addition to salad dressings or when used as glazes for meats, berry-heavy ones add a nice zing to desserts, and without any alcohol content they're also handy for flavoring sodas at home for the non-tipplers in the family. And since it's the holiday season, I'd be remiss if I didn't point out that any and all of these would make for great stocking stuffers. Luckily, all of them are available for sale via the internet, so even the purchasing process is easy.
Liber & Co. Grenadine

This Austin-based company makes a variety of excellent cocktail ingredients. I've long been a fan of their Texas Grapefruit Shrub and the new pineapple gum syrup also shines with fresh fruit flavor (and works perfectly in a pisco sour). But the Real Grenadine ($7.99 for 8.5 ounces or $11.99 for 17 ounces) stands above the pack because it has the most pure, unadulterated pomegranate flavor I've found in a grenadine to date. This is likely because each batch is made via cold-processing, so the fruit retains more of its natural color and flavor. It's flush with big strawberry and pomegranate personality with clean cane sugar and a thread of orange blossom water that adds a floral complexity to the mix. Gum arabic thickens up the texture, creating an enormous body and silky consistency that really boosts the personality of a classic Jack Rose. I aim to always have a bottle handy at home.
Yeoman Tonic Syrup

Named after the British guards at the Royal Palace, Yeoman Tonic Syrup ($12 for 8.5 ounces, $21 for 17.5 ounces) is manufactured by Small Hand Foods specifically to accompany Beefeater Gin. To best complement the herbal gin, the Bay Area company riffed on their original tonic recipe to make one that's slightly less bitter with a bigger citrus profile. Yeoman's definitely has more of a woody, earthy quality than other tonic syrups I've tasted, with less spice and more perky lemon flavor, and it really does pair well with the heavy juniper of the iconic London Dry. I've found a lime wedge accents the mix perfectly.
Jack Rudy Elderflower Tonic
This latest release from the Jack Rudy Cocktail Co. ($9 for 8 ounces) is a superb pick for those looking for something a bit more fun than your average tonic syrup. Elderflower is the main ingredient, but don't get it mixed up with the other popular cocktail ingredient, St. Germain; this guy has a big bracing kick of astringent quinine in the recipe, unlike the syrupy-sweet liqueur. Subtle hints of lemongrass help bridge the gap between the tonic's bitterness and the floral qualities of the elderflower, creating a drink that's sparkling and crisp when it's paired with club soda. When gin enters the mix, a new depth emerges as botanicals complement and enhance one another. It's fantastic stuff that I would highly recommend drinking pre-dinner or with any kind of spicy cuisine to cool and cleanse the palate.
Bittermilk Charred Grapefruit Tonic With Bulls Bay Sea Salt

When it comes to new syrups, I can't contain my excitement for the entire line from South Carolina's Bittermilk, which launched in 2013. The company makes six flavor combinations that are just so fun and inventive, it's hard to resist the urge to keep them all on hand for when cocktail cravings strike. My favorite flavor is the Charred Grapefruit Tonic with Bulls Bay Sea Salt ($15 for 17 ounces). Grapefruit peels are charred to bring out a subtle bitter element, buffered with lemon and lime juices and the slight tang from cinchona bark (the source of the quinine needed to call it a "tonic"). Sea salt seasons the mix and helps connect all of the citrus flavors together in harmony. It's easily the perfect warm-weather cocktail when combined with vodka (botanically-driven gin tends to clash), but I intend on enjoying it year-round because it's just that delicious.
Owl's Brew Pink & Black

This collection of tea-based cocktail mixers debuted originally in 2013, but they're starting to make a bigger splash across the country as tea and cocktail lovers alike notice the playful array of flavors available. Three flavors anchor the portfolio, but I especially like the Pink & Black ($21 for 32 ounces), a flirty blend of darjeeling tea, hibiscus, lemon peel, strawberry, and agave nectar. Try drinking it with one part tea mix to two parts alcohol (vodka or tequila both work well), and for a great non-alcoholic mocktail I had success adding ¾ of an ounce of lemon juice and topping club soda.
Royal Rose Three Chile Syrup

Most syrups stick to sweet fruit and herbal profiles, but Royal Rose's Three Chile syrup ($11 for 8 ounces) is an excellent option to create savory and spicy drinks. The roasty flavor made by this Brooklyn company features a trio of dried ancho, poblano and jalapeno peppers for a trifecta of spice that's balanced nicely with an even level of organic cane sugar and cane juice. I've found it adds a nice heat to the traditional Margarita formula, or mix with tequila or dark rum and hot chocolate for a warm, comforting cold-weather concoction.

I think a lot of people who read blogs wonder what the life of a blogger is like behind-the-scenes. We share small snippets of our personal life on the blog and on our social media channels (Instagram!), but most of that is very stylized and selectively shared.
Recently, I’ve started using Snapchat as another way to connect with all of you and I absolutely love it. It’s impossible to filter Snapchat – you can only post real time and there is no way edit photos or post ‘latergrams’. What you see is what you get.
I’ve also started to share how I set up the shoots for photos like this passionfruit cocktail. I take short videos sharing step-by-step everything I think about and all the equipment I need when I am shooting a recipe. I’ve had a really great response from people who follow me on Snapchat about these little shares – from both people who blog and people who don’t.

As for the recipe, passionfruit is a really special thing. I didn’t know this until this year, but it’s actually grown locally in California in a handful of farms. Getting it from my local farmer’s market was an unexpected treat. It’s growing season is about November to February, so don’t wait too long!
Passion fruit is great fresh on ice cream or yogurt, but today I made it into an easy passionfruit simple syrup. You can mix it with sparkling water for a great mocktail or add a splash of vodka for a more grown-up version. I love waiting until the passion fruit gets all wrinkly as that is when they taste their best. They are pretty hardy and can be stored in the fridge for a week or two before you use them.
If you’re in the San Francisco area, I got my passion fruit from Stepladder Ranch using Good Eggs (an online farmer’s market that delivers to your door!). I just talked to Jack from Saddle Ranch (as in cold-called him on his cell phone which I found on the internet) to get all of this information on passion fruit and it sounds like they just dropped off a huge order to Good Eggs so you should be able to get some right now!

Ingredients
[i]Passionfruit Simple Syrup Ingredients: (makes extra)[/i]
- 1 cup granulated sugar
- 1 cup water
- 1 tablespoon lemon
- 1 cup passionfruit (lilikoi) pulp
[i]Passionfruit Mocktail or Cocktail Ingredients:[/i]
- Ice
- 1/2 cup passionfruit simple syrup
- Soda water
- 3 ounces vodka (optional)
Instructions
[i]Make the Passionfruit Simple Syrup:[/i]
- Heat the sugar and water in a small saucepan over medium high heat until the sugar is fully dissolved.
- Add the lemon and passionfruit and bring to a boil. As soon as the syrup is boiling, remove from heat and let cool.
[i]Make the Passionfruit Mocktail or Cocktail:[/i]
- Fill two cocktail glasses with ice. Cover the bottom of each with about 2 tablespoons of passion fruit simple syrup. Fill to 2/3 full with soda water and also vodka if using. Stir and top with remaining passion fruit simple syrup.

Wow – Kelly – this post I am seriously bookmarking. It is SO so so helpful, and neat to go behind the scenes with you. To be honest, I didn’t even THINK that you do not need the spirit in the recipe. Plus, the freezing point of alcohol is so much colder than water’s so in turn, it will make the ice melt faster. I also love the dimension of the ice on top of the glass. All your tips were phenomenal. This was soooo so so helpful, especially as a new blogger, seeing how you set things up. Your photos are seriously so stunning.

Simple Syrup
Simple syrup is a common ingredient in drink recipes, whether you’re making cocktails or iced coffee. Don’t be tempted by bottled sweeteners; if you can boil water, you can make simple syrup. It’s an easy step but an important one. By dissolving granulated sugar in hot water before adding it to cold beverages, you ensure an even distribution of sweetness without any gritty crystals left in the bottom of the glass. Here’s a go-to recipe that will keep refrigerated for a month. Cocktail Party Recipes
Ingredients
- 1 cup water
- 1 cup sugar
How to Make It
In a small saucepan, bring sugar and water to a boil; simmer until the sugar is dissolved, 3 minutes. Remove from the heat and let cool completely.
Make Ahead
Simple syrup is also fantastic when flavored or spiced. Try cinnamon syrup, lemon-thyme syrup, rosemary syrup, vanilla syrup and a concentrated demerara sugar rich syrup, which has a rich molasses flavor. If you need to make larger quantities, stick with the easy 1:1 ratio of water to sugar.
Serve With
Try it in a Blackberry Collins cocktail, sangria recipes and other party-ready pitcher drinks. It's also ideal for iced tea, coffee, and homemade sodas. Add a tea bag directly to the syrup for an elegant Jasmine Syrup. For a quick dessert, add plain or flavored simple syrup to a citrus salad or a bowl of berries topped with fluffy whipped cream. Some bakers like to use simple syrup on layer cakes to help keep them moist. Just make sure to brush or sprinkle it on the cake in moderation to avoid making the layers too sweet or too soggy.

Calamansi Shrub Syrup + A Cocktail Recipe
In the beverage world, the term “shrub” refers to a homemade concoction featuring fruit, sugar, and vinegar that yields a sweet and sour syrup. Like jams, jellies, and preservers, shrubs were simply another method of preserving fruit back in colonial America. There were cherry shrubs, strawberry shrubs, raspberry shrubs—really any fruit could be shrubbed. The fruity, sharp, and sweet vinegar syrup was usually simply mixed with water for a cool and refreshing drink, and later, shrubs were mixed with spirits and liqueurs for bracing cocktails. Nowadays, shrub cocktails are re-emerging and becoming more and more popular within the craft cocktail movement and popping up in more and more bars across the country.
Because any number of vinegars can be used to make a shrub, they are often referred to as “drinking vinegars”. And since we Pinoys do loves us some vinegar, I figured a Filipino drinking vinegar was in order (plus it was a good excuse for me to have a cocktail or two).
For my first foray into the wilderness of shrubs (whoa! pun!), I leaned on this wonderful shrub primer over at Serious Eats. For the fruit in my shrub, I decided to go with Filipino calamansi limes, and for the vinegar, I went with Filipino white cane vinegar. I kept things simple with this first round of shrub, opting to use just calamansi, vinegar, and sugar. But I do plan on trying other incarnations with different fruits (ginger, chile peppers, berries, etc), and a variety of different Filipino vinegars (dark sugarcane vinegar, coconut vinegar, palm vinegar, etc).
Making this Calamansi Shrub was super easy. I first cut some calamansi limes in half, squeezed and reserved the juice, and reserved the rinds as well. I weighed the rinds in a bowl, then added an equal weight of sugar to them. After muddling the sugar and rinds for a bit, I covered the bowl and placed it in the refrigerator overnight.

After a day or so, a thick syrup formed from the rinds and sugar, to which I added the reserved calamansi juice. I let the mixture sit at room temperature for a couple hours, then I strained the liquid from the rinds. Finally, I added the Filipino cane vinegar to the mixture and stirred until the sugar was completely dissolved. I only added a tablespoon of the vinegar at a time, tasting the syrup after each addition. After adding about 1/4 – 1/2 cup of vinegar, I was happy with the balance of tang and sweetness.
Calamansi and Filipino Sugarcane Vinegar Shrub
The resultant shrub syrup was full of bright, calamansi aroma and flavor (think mandarin orange crossed with a lime), and had a nice balance of sweet and sour, without an overpowering vinegar taste. A couple tablespoons of this Calamansi shrub with soda water is incredibly refreshing. I could imagine even pouring some of this syrup over ice cream. But of course, I had to make a cocktail, no? Yes.
For a simple, yet stiff, cocktail, I mixed some of the Calamansi Shrub with Campari and Gin (a Negroni essentially, but with the shrub subbing in for the sweet vermouth). The sweet tang of the Calamansi Shrub balanced nicely with the bitterness of the Campari, with the juniper notes in the gin not being overpowered by either. Because of the bitterness in this drink, I like to call it “The Ilocano”, since my peeps from the Northern Ilocano region of the Philippines love bitterness so much.
Below is a recipe for “The Ilocano” cocktail. To make your own Calamansi Shrub, refer to this post on Serious Eats for some guidelines—I ended up using equal parts fruit, sugar, and vinegar/calamansi juice (8 ounces calamansi rinds, 8 ounces sugar, 1/2 cup calamansi juice, 1/2 cup vinegar), but you could adjust this ratio to your own liking. Enjoy.
Homemade Calamansi Shrub syrup made from Filipino calamansi limes, Filipino sugarcane vinegar, and sugar. The shrub syrup is then mixed into a cocktail with gin and Campari.
- 1 1/2 ounces gin
- 3/4 ounce Campari
- 3/4 ounce Calamansi Shrub Syrup (see method above)
- Ice
- Calamansi limes for garnish
- Combine the gin, Campari, and Calamansi shrub in a cocktail shaker filled with ice. Stir until thoroughly chilled, about 30 seconds. Strain into chilled rocks glass filled with fresh ice. Garnish with Calamansi lime and serve immediately.

Ginger Syrup
Ginger flavored syrup
3" piece of ginger and cut into chunks. Add ginger to 1 cup of boiling water. Add 2 cups of sugar to boiling mixture and stir until dissolved. Remove from heat and let sit for a while to let syrup absorb the ginger flavor. For less syrup just stick to 2 parts sugar for 1 part water recipe.

This is one of my favorite martinis! If you are afraid to drink gin, this drink will change your mind. The Lemon Gingerini incorporates ginger syrup (very easy to make at home, or substitute with fresh ginger), gin, and lemon to produce a slightly herbal and incredibly refreshing drink.
A girly drink all will appreciate, even if you don't like gin.
