  Have you had a sex on the beach lately? This popular vodka cocktail is one of those fruity drinks that anyone will enjoy and everyone can make. It's a great tropical highball for hot summer nights or an afternoon at the beach.

  The sex on the beach recipe is incredibly easy: simply choose your favorite vodka and add the sweet mix of fruits. You may want to add your own twist by switching to a flavored vodka as well. Start out with either strawberry or coconut as they're both fun additions, but don't stop there. The peach, black currant, orange, and cranberry flavors will host almost any vodka you want to pour.

  If you are just starting out as a bartender, you will find that the sex on the beach is a good drink to add to your memory bank. It is one of those that you can turn to next time someone says, "I feel like something different, something fruity."

  It should be noted that there are many sex on the beach recipes out there. As the drink spread across the U.S. in the 1980s, bartenders came up with their own versions and kept the provocative name. This just happens to be one of the most popular versions that have been passed around (and even this one has a number of variables).

  What You'll Need

  • 1 1/2 ounces
  • vodka
  • 3/4 ounce ​
  • peach schnapps
  • 1/2 ounce ​
  • creme de cassis (or ​
  • Chambord)
  • 2 ounces ​
  • orange juice (or ​
  • pineapple juice)
  • 2 ounces ​
  • cranberry juice
  • Orange slice and ​
  • maraschino cherry for garnish

  How to Make It

  1. Pour all the ingredients into a cocktail shaker with ice cubes.
  2. Shake well.
  3. Strain into a highball glass.
  4. Garnish with the orange slice and maraschino cherry.

  Choose Your Vodka

  The choice of vodka is not important in this drink. Feel free to use your favorite "well" vodka and save some cash. There are some good and inexpensive vodkas available that are perfect for heavily flavored cocktails like this.

  The Crème de Cassis

  The one ingredient that you may not have on hand is the crème de cassis, though you now have a good excuse to pick up a bottle.

  This is a black currant-flavored liqueur that also makes an appearance in the Kir and Chimayo cocktails.

  It is not an essential in the bar, but it is nice to have around. Don't worry, it is an inexpensive liqueur. Just look near the schnapps and it should be there.

  Though the more traditional recipe for a sex on the beach uses crème de cassis, its infrequent use in the bar has caused many to turn to Chambord as a substitute. The difference between the black currant and black raspberry liqueurs is not significant, so if you stock Chambord, go ahead and use it. Grenadine can also be used.

  Make It a Punch

  If you like, transform this cocktail into a pitcher or punch drink. It is the perfect style of drink for doing just that. All you need to do is keep the ingredients in proportion and increase each to the amount you need for the party. Your guests will love it.

  How Strong Is the Sex on the Beach?

  Let's assume that we use an 80-proof vodka with Peachtree Schnapps (48 proof) and pour according to the recipe. In this case, our sex on the beach would have an alcohol content of about 11 percent ABV (22 proof). It is a very average mixed drink, just keep an eye on the number of drinks you have because they can sneak up on you.

  The History of the Cocktail

  The name alone gives this cocktail its obvious appeal. The "sex on the beach" moniker is fun, suggestive, and great for selling drinks. Where did the drink and its name originate? That is a good question.

  It is without fail that the true origins of many of our favorite cocktails are a little hazy.

  We are talking about alcohol, after all, so it goes with the territory. This drink is no different and there are a few popular stories circulating.

  One of the more common accounts of the sex on the beach's creation is a flashback to 1987 and the rise of peach schnapps. It seems that National Distribution, a big liquor distributor, held a contest in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, for the bartender who sold the most peach schnapps.

  Ted Pizio from the bar Confettis won the $1000 prize. Pizio's mix of vodka, peach schnapps, orange juice and grenadine was a hit. He gave it the name because sex on the beach was one of the main reasons to spend spring break in Ft. Lauderdale.

  It is a great story, but according to some bartenders who worked in the 80s, this was not the drink's first appearance. Some claim to have mixed the drink as early as 1981. There are also stories from that early that refer to the Chambord version under the name "Florida sunset."

  There are many things to like about this drink, but it has to be the name that made it famous. The 70s and 80s were filled with tall, fruity, vodka-based drinks and many had the funky, sexy, and sometimes wacky names that get stuck in the minds of drinkers.

  • 75ml vodka
  • 75ml peach schnapps

  1. Put all ingredients into a cocktail shaker.

Cocktails, das bedeutet Saft und Fusel, Hauptsache bunt. Genau jetzt trägt irgendwo in den USA jemand ein Hawaiihemd und schenkt einen Cocktail aus Wodka, Pfirsichlikör und Cranberrysaft aus. Er nennt ihn Sex on the Beach. Weil Beischlaf am Strand aus der Sicht vieler junger Menschen a) wünschenswert und b) lustig ist, wird das Ding ab da stellvertretend und/oder vorbereitend für echten Sex bestellt wie nichts Gutes. Auch an Orten, an denen es den Drink gar nicht gibt, bei Bartendern, die noch nie davon gehört haben.

  Die Folge: Für den Sex on the Beach sind heute Dutzende Rezepte in Umlauf, auch wenn sich die allgemeine Bartenderschaft im Wesentlichen auf zwei Varianten geeinigt hat, die als die „echten“ gelten. Ihnen allen gemein: Wodka als Basis-Spirituose und außenrum ganz viel Likör und Cranberrysaft. Auch, wenn der anspruchsvolle Connoisseur des Jahres 2017 beim puren Gedanken daran schon Pickel auf der Zunge bekommt, lasst euch einfach mal darauf ein. Auf Grand Slam-Siege von Boris Becker. Auf Taaaake oooon meeee. Auf Schulterpolster. Auf 2er Golf und die Schachtel Zigaretten für 4 Mark. Auf Taaaaake meeeeee oooon. Auf jüngere Cocktail-Geschichte.

  Die Story hinter dem Sex on the Beach

  Die Schnaps-Historiker sind sich uneins, wann und von wem genau der Sex on the Beach erfunden wurde, die meisten sehen aber den DeKuyper Peachtree als Ausgangspunkt. Diese neue Variante des „Peach Schnapps“ erschien 1984 in den USA und 1986 in Deutschland und war damals binnen kürzester Zeit extrem beliebt. Zwei der beliebtesten Peachtree-Cocktails waren der Fuzzy Navel („Der fusselige Bauchnabel“) mit Pfirsichlikör und Orangensaft und der Hairy Navel („Der haarige Bauchnabel“) – eine Variante mit Wodka.

  Addiert man zum Hairy Navel nun Cranberrynektar, hat man auch schon einen Sex on the Beach. Zumindest eine der beiden geläufigen Versionen und wohl auch die deutlich stärker verbreitete: Pfirsichlikör, Wodka, Orangensaft, Cranberrysaft, all das ist leicht zu bekommen und ergibt einen irre unkomplizierten Drink. Lässt man den ohnehin geschmacksneutralen Wodka weg, bekommt man eine nahezu gleichwertige Virgin-Version – hurra, alle sind an Bord. Da Cranberrysaft im Deutschland der 80er zugegeben nicht ganz so leicht aufzutreiben ist wie zeitgleich in den USA, hilft man sich hier mit Grenadine oder laut Augenzeugenberichten mit „irgendwelchen roten Säften, die gerade da sind“.

  Ende der 80er entsteht ein zweites Rezept, dessen Ursprünge ebenfalls im Dunkeln liegen, das aber vor allem von der amerikanischen Restaurantkette TGI Fridays etabliert wird. Es besteht aus Chambord, Midori, Wodka, Ananassaft und Cranberrysaft und ist damit für die meisten Bars dieser Zeit und vor allem für jede normale Hausbar praktisch unmöglich zu rekonstruieren. Entstanden ist es wahrscheinlich, weil anspruchsvollere Bartender einen Sex on the Beach anbieten wollten, ohne sklavisch dem doch recht simplen Originalrezept ohne echten Wiedererkennungswert zu folgen. Da der Sex on the Beach wie viele Cocktails dieser Ära einen eher schlechten Ruf unter Freunden der gehobenen Bar besitzt , existiert er in unseren Breitengraden leider fast ausschließlich in den Varianten: In „Wodka mit irgendeinem Saft“ und in „Willst du nicht lieber was richtiges?“. Deshalb, für alle, die schon immer wissen wollten, wie man einen Sex on the Beach wirklich mixt:

  • 2,5 cl Wodka

  Unser Lieblingsrezept und die richtigen Säfte und Liköre

  Wir schreiben niemandem vor, was er zu mögen hat, aber wir sind eindeutig eher Fans der zweiten Variante – geschmacklich ist sie spannender, die Ananas gibt dem ganzen Drink noch einen tropischen Kick. Er wirkt wie ein Virgin Tiki, da man zwischen all den Likören und Säften natürlich nur recht wenig bis gar keine Spirituosen schmeckt. Vorausgesetzt natürlich, ihr nehmt jetzt nicht den billigsten Wodka aus dem Supermarkt-Regal.

  Das gilt im Übrigen auch für die anderen Zutaten: Orangensaft und Ananassaft sollten frisch sein, auch wenn Letzteres bedeutet, dass ihr einen Entsafter braucht. Der Unterschied zwischen einem Sex on the Beach mit frischen Säften und einem mit Tetrapack-Suppe ist frappierend. Beim Cranberrynektar habt ihr aber leider meistens keine große Wahl: frisch findet man die roten Beeren nur sehr selten, sodass wir keine Entsaftungs-Testreihe veranstalten konnten, wir schätzen aber, dass das Ergebnis sehr sauer und herb wird. Also müsst ihr den Cranberrysaft kaufen – und weil es den sogenannten „Muttersaft“ der Beeren ebenfalls nur schwer zu bekommen gibt (und meist zu Mondpreisen) bleibt’s hier beim Nektar.

  Je nach Rezept braucht ihr also noch Melonen- oder Pfirsichlikör und Chambord, einem französischen Himbeerlikör. Da die jeweiligen Original-Produkte der Rezepte durchaus brauchbar sind, geht unsere Empfehlung mit Blick auf die Authentizität zu den authentischen Spirituosen. Wer allerdings bereits Liköre vom örtlichen Obstbrenner oder gängigen Likör-Marken wie Bols oder eben DeKuyper zu Hause hat, kann guten Gewissens auch zu denen greifen. Nur die kräutrig-himbeerige Aromatik des Chambord ist recht schwierig zu kopieren.

  Bum Bum on the Beach: Unser Twist auf den Sex on the Beach

  Gefühlt alle 10 Jahre geht a-ha wieder mit Take on me auf Tour und die Band erfindet sich samt ihrem einzigen relevanten Lied noch einmal neu. Das funktioniert immerhin so gut, dass ihr wahrscheinlich gerade mitsingt, falls ihr unserer Empfehlung eingangs gefolgt seid. Diese Unnachgibigkeit im Altmodischen ist Inspiration genug für uns, um auch dem Sex on the Beach nochmal einen neuen Anstrich zu verpassen. Mit unserem Twist auf den 80er-Cocktail wollen wir einerseits das Rezept ein wenig modernisieren, andererseits dieses bunte Lebensgefühl der Ära aufgreifen. Dafür benutzen wir als Garnitur einen anderen Klassiker der 80er – das nach Boris Becker benannte Bum Bum-Eis. Durch das Tonic wird der der Drink etwas herber und gleichzeitig weniger drückend-saftlastig. Er wird frischer, verliert aber nicht an Frucht. So geht’s:

  • 3 cl Wodka
  • 3 cl Melonenlikör
  • 4 große Brombeeren
  • 4,5 cl Ananassaft
  • 4,5 cl Cranberrynektar
  • Holunder-Tonic (wir nehmen Fever Tree)
  • Minze und ein Bum Bum für die Garnitur

  Die Brombeere mit dem Löffel ein wenig andrücken und zusammen mit allen anderen Zutaten außer dem Tonic Water auf Eis hart shaken. In ein Hurricane-Glas mit frischen Eiswürfeln abseihen. Mit Holundertonic aufgießen und noch einmal umrühren. Mit der Minze und dem Bum Bum garnieren. Googeln, ob das Bum Bum wirklich wegen Boris so heißt. Dabei trinken.
