Gelsenkirchen
Gelsenkirchen [1] is a city in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. The city's population as of December 31 2012 was 257,600.
Understand Edit
Gelsenkirchen is in the heart of the Ruhr region in Germany. Located in the western part of the country, Gelsenkirchen is located near major cities such as Dusseldorf and Cologne. Through coal mining, the Ruhr Region became former industrial capital of Germany and formed heavily populated cities. During World War II, the area was severely bombed due to its rich industrial value. After World War II though coal mining was severely curtailed and large unemployment hit the region. Gelsenkirchen, like neighboring cities, are refining their image promoting its industrial culture. Old refineries have been remolded into event halls and ice skating rinks. Beautiful bike paths now lie where old rail lines ran. Art from old machines are a source of artistic expression. Gelsenkirchen and the surrounding Ruhr Region offer this and more!

Clausthal-Zellerfeld
Clausthal-Zellerfeld is in the Upper Harz in Lower Saxony.
Clausthal-Zellerfeld is situated in the Oberharz. It is the largest town of the Oberharz community with an altitude of 535m. It is great for winter activities as well as walking and mountain biking during the rest of the year. Clausthal has a well known University "Aula Academica". It has a picturesque low mountain range landscape with crystal clear waters in more than 60 ponds and flowering meadows
Clausthal-Zellerfeld consists of two towns: Clausthal and Zellerfeld. The towns were merged in 1924. Buntenbock was added in 1972 it has 700 residents and is about 3 km south of Clausthal
The University was opened in 1775 and used to be a school for children and a centre for mining apprentices. In 1864 it was established as a Mining Academy, and also taught physics, chemistry, mathematics and engineering. Today the University has about 3000 students.
Clausthal's focus is on university life and the business world, where as Zellerfeld is the tourist centre of the city. The "culture mile" is worth a visit- the St. Salvatoris church with a famous altarpiece by Werner Tübke, the Upper Harz Mining Museum, Kunsthandwerkerhof the former mint. Also every Thursday evening from May to October there is the Zellerfelder popular farmers market. The town offers free parking on Adolph-Roemer-Straße in Clausthal just a stroll through a variety of retail outlets. The houses in the town are built in the style of the typical upper Harz, which are a good photo opportunity. In the town you can buy various local specialities, such as meat and sausages. Why not try the Harzer witch bread (confectionery Meier), which is produced only in Clausthal-Zellerfeld or the Clausthal Elixir (rats pharmacy).
Both parts of the city have some beautiful historic buildings. In Clausthal is the Market Church "To the Holy Spirit". The original church was destroyed by fire in 1634. It was replaced with a wooden church, which was completed in 1642. It is now the largest wooden church in Germany and can seat up to 2200 people and boasts a massive organ and a great altar. In the south-western corner you can find an alabaster carving of the story of Christ. In Zellerfeld, you can find many craftsman's houses, which have been rebuilt after the fire in 1672. One of the main crafts was the production of silver and gold coins. Special laboratories were designed and built to separate the gold . In 1978 it was converted into a glass-blower craftsman shop. Today you can watch the old traditional craftsmen close up and discover how the glass is blown.

Undercover Police in Manhattan Kill an Unarmed Man in a Scuffle
An unarmed Brooklyn man waiting for a taxicab was shot and killed outside a bar on Eighth Avenue in Midtown Manhattan early yesterday in a scuffle with three undercover narcotics detectives, the authorities said.
The details of the shooting were sketchy last night and there were conflicting accounts of the episode. But a senior investigator and a man who saw the scuffle said the dead man, Patrick M. Dorismond, 26, who worked as a security guard for the 34th Street Partnership, was angered when one of the undercover detectives approached him and sought to buy drugs.
The witness, Kevin Kaiser, who worked with Mr. Dorismond, said he and Mr. Dorismond did not know that the detectives who approached them -- all in plain clothes -- were police officers. Deputy Chief Thomas Fahey, a police spokesman, acknowledged that the police ''have no indication'' that Mr. Dorismond knew.
But a lawyer for Anthony Vasquez, the detective who fired the fatal shot, said his client yelled ''Police!'' after the scuffle began and before the shot was fired.
It was unclear whether Detective Vasquez, 29, who has been on the force for five years, fired intentionally or by accident. The shooting is being investigated by the department's Internal Affairs Bureau and by the Manhattan district attorney, Robert M. Morgenthau.
The shooting was the third in 13 months in which plainclothes officers shot and killed an unarmed man. It came just as tensions that rose with the acquittal of four officers in the shooting of Amadou Diallo and another fatal shooting by the police a week later had begun to ebb.
Like the earlier two incidents, this shooting involved a black victim. Detective Vasquez and his two partners are Hispanic.
Yesterday afternoon, Police Commissioner Howard Safir provided few details about the shooting or the events that led up to it, and Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani, speaking with reporters, urged the news media not to judge the officers before all the evidence was available.
''I would urge everyone not to jump to conclusions,'' Mr. Giuliani said, ''and to allow the facts to be analyzed and investigated without people trying to let their biases, their prejudices, their emotions, their stereotypes dictate the results.''
Mr. Dorismond, who had two daughters, ages 5 and 1, was raised in Flatbush and had worked for the 34th Street Partnership for two years. A security guard, he wore a police-like blue uniform while on duty bearing the business improvement district's patch on his shoulder. His usual post was in Herald Square, where he worked from 3 to 11 p.m., his co-workers said.
Although friends described him as easygoing, polite and honest, Mr. Safir said that Mr. Dorismond had a criminal record and cited three arrests, the most recent in 1996. In two cases, Mr. Dorismond pleaded guilty to disorderly conduct, a low-level offense. The disposition of the third was sealed because it occurred when he was 13.
The fatal confrontation began about 12:30 a.m. outside the Wakamba Cocktail Lounge at 543 Eighth Avenue, near 37th Street. Since his shift had ended, Mr. Dorismond had been drinking beer there with Mr. Kaiser and six tourists from Chile, according to a senior investigator and Mr. Kaiser. The two security guards, who had changed into street clothes, were waiting for a taxi when the undercover detective approached and asked if they knew where he could buy marijuana, according to a senior police official, who said that the detective thought he could buy some from Mr. Dorismond.
Angry words were exchanged, a scuffle erupted and the two backup detectives came to the aid of the undercover detective.
Detective Vasquez, who was one of the backup officers, known as ghosts in police parlance because they shadow the undercover officer to protect him, shot Mr. Dorismond once in the chest from close range. The detectives, who had made eight marijuana arrests earlier in the evening, were all assigned to the Gang Investigation Division's narcotics unit.
The confrontation itself was quick and chaotic, according to investigators and police officials, and early police reports of the shooting that indicated that the officer had shot a man who had tried to rob him were inaccurate, officials and investigators said yesterday.
A possible reason for the erroneous reports was the signal used by the undercover detective to alert his backups that he was in trouble. Wearing a hidden transmitter that was monitored by the other officers, the detective gave the signal as the confrontation with Mr. Dorismond escalated, which was ''What are you going to do, rob me?''
In the hours before the shooting, the three detectives and the rest of their team, a supervisor and several other officers, had made eight marijuana arrests in the area around the Port Authority Bus Terminal and had put the suspects in a van nearby, the senior official said.

The three detectives were preparing to leave the area when the undercover officer spotted Mr. Dorismond and Mr. Kaiser walking out of the Wakamba, the official said.
The detectives were in the area, the police said, because officers believe it is frequented by Bloods gang members, but officials could not say whether any of the eight people arrested were gang members.
Mr. Kaiser said he and Mr. Dorismond had been waiting for a cab for several minutes when they were approached.
''They were asking for weed, narcotics,'' Mr. Kaiser said. ''He brushed them off, and told them to keep moving,'' he said of his friend. ''He didn't want to speak with them.''
While Mr. Kaiser's account and that of the police are similar up until the scuffle, Mr. Kaiser said the officer first took a swing at Mr. Dorismond, and the senior police official said Mr. Dorismond struck first.
The senior investigator said that several other people saw the shooting and the events that preceded it, including an employee inside the Wakamba. The investigator said that their accounts were all similar to Mr. Kaiser's.
According to Mr. Kaiser's account, the three men closed in after Mr. Dorismond first responded to the undercover detective's request for drugs, and then the argument escalated.
By different accounts, the argument lasted from 15 seconds to three minutes, but Mr. Kaiser said he and Mr. Dorismond never knew the men who were confronting them were the police. ''Patrick and one of the officers get real loud with each other, and one of the officers swings at him first,'' Mr. Kaiser said. ''Patrick proceeded to swing back, and that's when the shot let out.''
''The last memory I have of this man is him rolling on the ground, gasping for air, with blood coming out of his mouth,'' Mr. Kaiser said of Mr. Dorismond.
The undercover detective and the second backup detective, whose names were not released by the Police Department, told investigators that they believed the scuffling was over when the shot rang out, but they did not see the shot fired and did not know whether Detective Vasquez fired intentionally or accidentally.
The two officers said they just heard the gun go off, while Mr. Dorismond had his back to them and was facing Detective Vasquez.
A lawyer for Detective Vasquez, Philip Karasyk, said the officer fired his weapon by mistake, calling the incident ''a straight accidental shooting'' and adding of his client, ''When he pulls his own gun, the guy lunges for it and the gun goes off.''
But a senior police official said that either Mr. Kaiser or Mr. Dorismond yelled, ''Get the gun!'' when they saw Detective Vasquez's drawn gun. The official said that statement might have led Detective Vasquez to wrongfully believe that either Mr. Kaiser or Mr. Dorisman had a gun.
The senior investigator said that even after the shooting, when detectives were questioning Mr. Kaiser at the Midtown South station house, Mr. Kaiser still thought that the three men who had confronted him and his friend were not the police. Mr. Kaiser was held for more than 12 hours but not charged with any crime. It was not until shortly before he was released that he learned that his friend had died.
Detective Vasquez has not been interviewed by prosecutors, nor has an interview been requested, Mr. Karasyk said. At least four assistant district attorneys were interviewing other witnesses yesterday, including the undercover detective and the other backup officer who was involved in the scuffle, a senior law enforcement official said.
Mr. Morgenthau's office will present the circumstances of the shooting to a grand jury, a practice that is standard in such incidents.
