Cranberry juice is one of the most popular cocktail mixers, one that is versatile enough to bring together a variety of flavors. Often, cranberry is that one key ingredient that is the finishing touch. A splash can be paired with tequila, whiskey, gin, vodka or rum and almost any flavor of liqueur.

Cranberry is probably best known as an essential in the popular Cosmopolitan and Cape Cod and if you want to experiment with your own cranberry cocktails, check out the fruit flavor pairings for some fresh ideas.

CRANBERRY Overview Information

Cranberry is a type of evergreen shrub that grows in wet areas, such as bogs or wetlands. Cranberry is native to northeastern and northcentral parts of the United States. The shrub has small, dark green leaves, pink flowers, and dark red fruit that are egg-shaped.

How does it work?

People used to think that cranberry worked for urinary tract infections by making the urine acidic and, therefore, unlikely to support the growth of bacteria. But researchers don't believe this explanation any more. They now think that some of the chemicals in cranberries keep bacteria from sticking to the cells that line the urinary tract where they can multiply. Cranberry, however, does not seem to have the ability to release bacteria which are already stuck to these cells. This may explain why cranberry is possibly effective in preventing urinary tract infections, but possibly ineffective in treating them.

CRANBERRY Uses & Effectiveness

Possibly Effective for:

  • Preventing urinary tract infections (UTIs). Some research shows that drinking cranberry juice or taking certain cranberry extracts can lower the risk of repeated UTIs in some people, such as women, children, older people, and people who are hospitalized. But cranberry juice and cranberry extracts don't seem to prevent repeated UTIs in all people. Also, research comparing cranberry to standard antibiotic treatments used for UTIs is not consistent. Some research shows that cranberry extract works as well as the antibiotic trimethoprim at preventing UTIs. But other evidence shows that cranberry less effective at preventing UTIs compared to antibiotic treatment.

Possibly Ineffective for:

  • Diabetes. Research shows that taking cranberry supplements by mouth does not lower blood sugar in people with diabetes.

Insufficient Evidence for:

  • Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). Early research shows that taking dried cranberry capsules three times daily for 6 months might improve urinary symptoms and reduce levels of certain biomarkers associated with BPH.
  • Common cold. Research suggests that drinking cranberry juice daily for 70 days does not reduce the risk of cold or flu, but might reduce cold and flu symptoms.
  • Clogged arteries (coronary artery disease). Early evidence suggests that drinking cranberry juice daily for 4 weeks does not improve blood flow in people with clogged arteries.
  • Stomach ulcers caused by Helicobacter pylori (H pylori) infection. There is inconsistent evidence regarding the ability of cranberry juice to eliminate a certain bacteria (H. pylori) in the stomach that can cause stomach ulcers. Some research suggests that drinking cranberry juice daily for up to 90 days can help eliminate H. pylori in adults and children. But other early research shows that drinking cranberry juice while taking conventional medication used to treat H. pylori infections does not improve healing time compared to taking the medication alone.
  • Flu. Research suggests that drinking cranberry juice daily for 70 days does not reduce the risk of cold or flu, but might reduce cold and flu symptoms.
  • Kidney stones (nephrolithiasis). There is inconsistent evidence on the use of cranberry to lower the risk of kidney stones. Some early evidence suggests that drinking cranberry juice might lower the risk of kidney stones forming. However, other early evidence suggests that drinking cranberry juice or taking cranberry extracts might actually increase the risk of kidney stones.
  • Memory. Early research suggests that drinking cranberry juice twice daily for 6 weeks does not improve memory in older people.
  • Metabolic syndrome. Early research suggests that drinking cranberry juice twice daily for 8 weeks can benefit some antioxidant measurements in the blood, but it does not appear to affect blood pressure, blood sugar, or cholesterol levels in people with metabolic syndrome.
  • Urine odor. Early research shows that drinking cranberry juice might reduce the odor of urine in people with difficulty controlling urination.
  • Wound healing.
  • Pleurisy.
  • Cancer.
  • Chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS).
  • Other conditions.
More evidence is needed to rate cranberry for these uses.
CRANBERRY Side Effects & Safety

Cranberry is LIKELY SAFE for most people when taken by mouth appropriately. Cranberry juice and cranberry extracts have been used safely in people. However, drinking too much cranberry juice can cause some side effects such as mild stomach upset and diarrhea. Drinking more than 1 liter per day for a long period of time might increase the chance of getting kidney stones.

Special Precautions & Warnings:

CRANBERRY Interactions

Moderate Interaction Be cautious with this combination

  • Warfarin (Coumadin) interacts with CRANBERRY

Warfarin (Coumadin) is used to slow blood clotting. Cranberry might increase how long warfarin (Coumadin) is in the body, and increase the chances of bruising and bleeding. Be sure to have your blood checked regularly. The dose of your warfarin (Coumadin) might need to be changed.

Minor Interaction Be watchful with this combination

  • Medications changed by the liver (Cytochrome P450 2C9 (CYP2C9) substrates) interacts with CRANBERRY

Some medications are changed and broken down by the liver.

CRANBERRY Dosing

The following doses have been studied in scientific research:

BY MOUTH:

  • For preventing urinary tract infections (UTIs): 10-16 ounces of a cranberry juice cocktail providing 26% cranberry juice daily has been used. 30-300 mL of cranberry juice daily has also been used. 50 mL of a drink containing both cranberry juice and lingonberry juice, taken daily for 6 months, has been used. Capsules containing 400-500 mg of dried cranberry, taken twice daily for 6 months to 1 year, has been used. 500 mg of a specific cranberry extract (Cran-Max, Proprietary Nutritionals) daily, and 800 mg cranberry capsules (Natural Cranberry Extract with Vitamin C, Solgar) twice daily for 6 months has also been used.

BY MOUTH:

  • For preventing urinary tract infections (UTIs): 50 mL of a cranberry and lingonberry concentrate taken daily for 6 months has been used. Also, 2 mL/kg of cranberry juice taken daily for one year has been used.

Cranberry Vodka Cocktail

Cranberry Vodka Cocktail – cranberry juice and vodka come together with a little fizz for a fun and easy holiday drink.

Let’s keep this short and sweet today. I have a fun cocktail for you. It is perfect for your holiday get together, New Years Eve, or just because you have some cranberries lying around. Vodka and Cranberry is a very classic drink, I just added some fizz. I have a thing about fizz. For some reason, I think that cocktails need to have fizz in them! Call me crazy, or call me genius – just make this drink.

Cranberry and vodka is a classic cocktail combination. It is simple, tangy, and just plain delicious. As much as I like the classic combination, I always have to mix things up. So I added a little splash of something fizzy. Because by this point, we all know I like my cocktail with some fizz!! I mean Skinny Mojitos are probably my new favorite.

Cranberry vodka cocktail is just one of those drinks you can throw together on a Friday night or you can serve at a party. The fresh cranberries, when it season, just give it a little something extra for presentation. Definitely not required. Add a slice of lime and you will something pretty enough to serve at your fanciest party!

You can make this cranberry vodka cocktail for just one, or make a whole pitcher of them! If you make a whole picture, leave out the ginger ale until you serve. Just let each person add a splash as they pour one.

Or put out a big punch bowl, and add the ginger ale right as your guests arrive. Less work for you, and the drink stays fizzy. If you are feeling festive, add a little squeeze of lime to the drink for a little twist.

  • 3/4 cup cranberry juice
  • 1 oz vodka
  • splash Ginger Ale
  • Cranberries for garnish

A nice alternative for the cranberry vodka is a pomegranate vodka. Using the recipe provided in the article,

substitute 3/4 cup of cranberry juice with 1/4 cup of pomegranate glaze(molasses) and 1/2 cup of water.

Skip the ginger ale and add 8 frozen blackberries and some ice and voila!

This sweet and fruity cranberry cocktail is perfect for Thanksgiving, Christmas, Valentine’s Day or any special occasion. Taste it and it will be Love at first sip!

Looking for that perfect holiday cocktail? This cranberry martini cocktail with a strawberry twist is just the drink for any festive occasion. Not only is it gorgeous, it will have you going mmm…after the first sip. The sweetness of the sweet Peach Schnapps is balanced out by the tart Cranberry Juice and Vodka, while the Malibu Rum gives it just a hint of a tropical feel. The strawberry slices that soak up the yumminess of the cocktail are a wonderful treat at the end too!

This cranberry cocktail is perfect for Thanksgiving (it helps take the edge of being around the whole family 😉 ). It’s bright vibrant color makes it apt for a Christmas too. The strawberry heart garnish makes this a perfect drink to show your love for your loved ones and it’s guaranteed to put a smile on faces.

Even though it’s a simple cocktail mix…I still did a step-by-step to show you how I cut the garnish and decorated the glass. Do let me know in the comments below if you happen to try or like this recipe 🙂

Enjoy…but drink responsibly!

Watch A Video Of This Recipe:

  1. 1/2 shot (0.75fl oz or 22ml) Malibu Rum
  2. 1/2 shot (0.75fl oz or 22ml) Peach Schnapps
  3. 1/2 shot (0.75fl oz or 22ml) Citron Vodka/Plain Vodka
  4. 3 shots (4.5fl oz or 132ml) Cranberry Juice
  5. 2 strawberries, for garnish
  6. A wedge of lime (optional)
  7. Sugar to rim the glass (optional)
  1. - To make strawberry hearts for the garnish cut a small "v" to remove the stem of the strawberry. Then cut it into slices.
  2. - You can rim your martini glass with sugar (if you want)- just use a lime/lemon wedge along the rim of the glass to get it wet and dip the glass in a plate with sugar.
  3. - Gently mix the Malibu Rum, Peach Schnapps, Vodka and Cranberry Juice together in a shaker (over ice if your Cranberry juice is not cold and pour it into the prepared glass.
  4. - Garnish your love martini with a couple strawberry hearts and a strawberry on the rim! Enjoy!
  1. For the strawberry garnish on the rim of the glass, simply make a cut half way up the bottom of a strawberry keeping the rest of it intact including the stem
  2. You can use either plain Vodka or any citrus flavored vodkas too.
  3. Because of the sweetness of this drink it doesn't really need a sugar rim. I just did it cos it's pretty!
  4. Drink responsibly. Don't drink and drive.

Cranberry Gin Cocktail

  • SHARES 7 606

You've made a roast fit for royalty and sides for days, so why not add a signature festive cocktail to your Christmas menu this year? At Tom Colicchio's Fowler & Wells, head bartender Christopher James is shaking up just what you need: a drink he calls the Cranble. Cranberries are muddled with gin, lemon juice and simple syrup for a drink that truly tastes like the holidays. The best part is the cranberry garnish that's dusted with confectioners’ sugar to resemble snow.

In this recipe, we use rich simple syrup, which is simply 2 parts sugar to 1 part water. The result is sweeter and more viscous, the perfect balance to tart cranberries.

Cranberry Gin Cocktail

Ingredients

¾ ounce rich simple syrup (see headnote)

½ ounce fresh lemon juice

7 fresh cranberries, divided

1 mint sprig, for garnish

Directions

1. In a cocktail shaker, combine the gin, rich simple syrup, lemon juice and 2 to 3 pieces of crushed ice. Shake vigorously, then pour ½ ounce of the mixture in the bottom of a rocks glass.

2. Add 4 of the cranberries to the glass and muddle well. Fill the glass with crushed ice and pour the remaining cocktail into the glass.

3. Top with even more crushed ice then garnish with the remaining cranberries. Dust the cranberries with confectioners’ sugar, then garnish with a mint sprig and serve.
